Acting For The Benefit Of Others

Dr. Michael LaitmanMost important in the spiritual work is to put filters or restrictions on all our thoughts, actions, desires, and words, which would act strictly in one direction: ensure that thoughts in the head, desires in the heart, words in the mouth, and actions by hands all work only for the benefit of others.

However, it doesn’t mean running from hospital to hospital, helping the needy, or assisting old ladies to cross the road, and so on. Nothing like this! We see that this doesn’t give us any results.

There is only one thing left: to pass the Upper Light through ourselves to the entire world by becoming one nation, as it is written in the Torah, “And you shall be unto me a nation of Cohens.” If we undertake this and become intermediaries between the entire world and the Creator in order to bestow to Him and to the world, but never to benefit ourselves as “Cohens have no allotment in this world,” then we will bring the whole world to harmony, balance and fulfil our mission.

This is the essence of the chapter Shoftim (Judges), who all the time have to measure and weigh correctly, pass fair verdicts, and control themselves.

And Elders Shall Announce….

laitman_236_01Torah, Deuteronomy 21:07 – 21:08: And they shall announce and say, “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see [this crime].” “Atone for Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, O Lord, and lay not [the guilt of] innocent blood among your people Israel.” And [so] the blood shall be atoned for them

The elders that symbolize the upper qualities of a person turn to the Creator because they understand that the Creator has given them problems on purpose, so that they would determine to what extent they are still not perfect. Therefore, the appeal to the Creator attracts the Reforming Light.

Of course, they don’t do it for themselves because the upper qualities of a person are at the level of bestowal. The Creator effects through them the lower qualities, and through the lower qualities, He effects the elders.

Passover Corrections

laitman_747_03Torah, Deuteronomy 16:03: You shall not eat leaven with it; for seven days you shall eat with it matzoth, the bread of affliction, for in haste you went out of the land of Egypt…

The sons of Israel eat unleavened bread because they left Egypt so quickly that the dough didn’t have time to ferment.

Haste means that liberation from egoism occurs instantly. This is the action of the upper Light that happens in the blink of an eye, and a new world opens up before a person.

Torah, Deuteronomy 16:04: And no leaven shall be seen with you within all your border for seven days; neither shall any of the flesh you slaughter on the preceding day in the afternoon, remain all night until the morning.

Leaven is egoism. “No leaven shall be seen for seven days,” means that no egoism should remain in you.

In order to work correctly with this enormous egoistic desire called Egypt, a person must break away from it fully, and this takes exactly one week (seven days) after which it is possible to start working with it for correction.

Therefore, throughout a year we work with egoism by correcting it, and during the Passover week we don’t use it. It is the same every year, because the renewal happens every time.

Torah, Deuteronomy 16:07: And you shall roast [it] and eat [it] in the place which the Lord, your God, will choose, and you shall turn away in the morning and go to your dwellings.

A person must come to a certain state, certain connection with others, in order to perform the correction of the biggest desires, because meat is the heaviest animalistic desire in him.

After that, we can go back to our usual corrections. This concludes the Pesach (Passover) holiday, and we continue our usual corrections throughout the year.

“Clear Away The Evil From Among You”

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Deuteronomy 22:21: …for she [the girl for whose virginity no evidence was found] did a disgraceful thing in Israel, to commit adultery [in] her father’s house. So shall you clear away the evil from among you.

It is about the Klipa (shell), the desire that, despite being connected to the upper level, still retains the intention for its own sake.

There is nothing that can be done here because the correction of this girl (this desire) is her death, meaning killing the intention “for oneself,” cutting it off from the actual desire.

The desire is left in a pure state, without an intention. Specifically Lev HaEven (the stony heart) kills the intention. Then this desire returns again and begins to correct itself with other intentions.

The call “clear away the evil from among you” means “engage in scrutiny all the time.” This is our work at different levels. Therefore, the entire Torah describes the path of one’s spiritual correction.

Never-Ending Exodus From Egypt

laitman_933Torah, Deuteronomy 16:01: Keep the month of spring, and make the Passover offering to the Lord, your God, for in the month of spring, the Lord, your God, brought you out of Egypt at night.

Passover is a state when a person should feel that he is always coming out of Egypt. After all, every time, huge egoistic desires are revealed in him, and he tries to rise above them.

We constantly come out of Egypt, little by little. We continue this way to the very end, until all uncorrected desires are exhausted. So far, we still have enough of them.

Impossible Yet Necessary

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: On the one hand, a person cannot get rid of his egoistic nature—the upper force carries this out. On the other hand, you say that a person is not given something that he is unable to do.

Answer: A person, as in mathematics, is given a condition that this is impossible yet necessary. Here, a natural question arises: “How?” If we cannot do anything yet the correction is compulsory, then it is impossible to avoid it either.

The solution is to use the wisdom of  Kabbalah to attract the force that would change us, instead of us changing ourselves! For this reason, Kabbalah was given to humanity.

Certainly, we are not able to exit our egoistic nature that forces us to think only of ourselves and of no one else. Whether we do so subconsciously or consciously, this is still the only thing that exists in us.

However, we can attract upon ourselves a special force called the Torah, or the upper Light, the property of love and bestowal, that will transform us.

Today we are beginning to see from our own mistakes that we, like dogs, are chasing our own tails, unable to do anything with ourselves and the world. We can only raise our hands and surrender ourselves to the mercy of the flow of evolution: Whatever happens, happens.

Judging by the number of people suffering from depression, drug use, and all other parameters, a larger portion of humanity is beginning to realize that it is in a state of despair. And now something must be done.

The only solution is for us to raise above ourselves. This can only be done with the help of the upper force. The wisdom of Kabbalah is the method for revealing it.

When everyone realizes that this is the only way out of a dead end, we will succeed.

How Can We Get To Know The Creator?

Cut Down An Unfruitful Tree

laitman_571_08The Torah, Deuteronomy 20:20: However, a tree you know is not a food tree, you may destroy and cut down, and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until its submission.

An infertile tree is cut down when it is possible to advance in the spiritual development with its help. You should use the tree for the movement toward the right goal: either the fruits themselves or at least something that you achieve with its help.

We have different types of desires. There are desires that we can transform into useful actions, and there are auxiliary desires. This is what we are talking about. It turns out that the desire itself isn’t at fault. It simply is this way according to its nature, and later it will turn into a fruitful tree.

All 613 desires of a person are located in the ten levels, what are called the ten Sefirot. Among them there are desires that can be easily managed in order to achieve the goal, and there are the passive ones that are impossible to control. They can be used only for the defensive purposes and for the advancing actions.

All this is sorted inside a person. He perfectly understands his spiritual states and the forces that determine these states.

Mutual Support

laitman_943The Torah, Deuteronomy 22:04: You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen [under its load] on the road, and ignore them. [Rather,] you shall pick up [the load] with him.

A donkey or an ox are animals that carry heavy loads.

If you see that a friend in a group falls in his spiritual work and is unable to fulfill it, you must help him.

I do not want to talk about how this happens inside a person—who is his brother or his neighbor, but we work among us in the group in exactly the same manner. Life is difficult for those who are gathered as a special group of people, working among themselves only to achieve greater adhesion in order to reveal the Creator. After all, our entire existence must be directed precisely to a spiritual goal, and this is what the Torah talks about.

Its laws are prescribed only for the group of people who devote their entire lives to attaining the Creator from their mutual connection.

So, if you see that your friend in spiritual work cannot cope with his ego and stumbles and falls all the time, you have to help him. You have to inspire him, to talk to him, to invite him to your place, to study together with him; that is, do everything possible to support him. Next time you will be in his place, and he will help you in return.

It always works mutually. By helping him, you join him or he joins you, as a lower part with a higher one, and you both rise spiritually.

But you should understand that if you see him falling or rising, this is how you perceive him. Everything happens in relation to you individually, and is given to you to make you rise. This means that “your brother is inside you.” There is nothing outside of us. All the neighbors, oxen, cows, sheep, etc.—is all within us. These are our human or animate desires, which we need to correct in this way.

“Do Not Sow The Vineyard With Mixed Seeds”

laitman_763_1The Torah, Deuteronomy 22:09: You shall not sow your vineyard [together with] a mixed variety of species, lest the increase, even the seed that you sow and the yield of the vineyard [both] become forbidden.

The fact is that at any level (inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human), you cannot mix the right and left lines because the right line proceeds from the root of bestowal and the left line proceeds from the root of reception. There must be a screen created between them—a middle line where they must be clearly integrated.

Similarly, one cannot simultaneously plow on a cow and a bull, or weave canvases of mixed fibers of flax and wool, or to transgress the prohibition of marriage between the tribes of the Cohens, the Levites and Israel.

Therefore, it is written: “You shall not sow your vineyard [together with] a mixed variety of species. ” After all, grapes are the left line (reception) and wheat is the right line (bestowal), and they cannot be mixed.

That is why you cannot consume dairy and meat together or or for fabric to be kosher there cannot be a mixture of two different kinds of thread. The division into the right and left lines is necessary in order to integrate everything along the middle line.

Based on this law, kosher animals are identified. The first sign of an animal being appropriate for consumption is that it has split hooves. The second sign is gradual chewing of the food and regurgitation, meaning, a constantly circulating process of digestion.

Animals that display only one of the two characteristics are not considered kosher. For example, a pig, although a cloven-hoofed animal, is a non-ruminant animal whose food enters immediately into the stomach, and therefore, it is not suitable for consumption.

That is, all the properties are shown here according to which we make the selection of the corrected desires. And those desires that have not yet been corrected are at the level of the pig or other animals.

Spiritual work is quite simple. And from it, there are a lot of consequences in our world.

“If A Man Has A Wayward And Rebellious Son ”

Laitman_022The Torah, Deuteronomy 21:18 – 21:21: If a man has a wayward and rebellious son, who does not obey his father or his mother, and they chasten him, and [he still] does not listen to them, his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place.

And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is wayward and rebellious; he does not obey us; [he is] a glutton and a guzzler.”

And all the men of his city shall pelt him to death with stones, and he shall die. So shall you clear out the evil from among you, and all Israel will listen and fear.

This excerpt is about a person’s frenzied desire with the help of which he wants to attain the Creator. It is as violent and rebellious as a horse that stomps, balks, and throws off the rider.

If a father and a mother, which are the male and the female parts, give birth to a son that does not obey them and he is obliged to join them and to receive the upper Light through them to continue the path and give birth himself—then they have to bring him to the elders, to those who are above them, to the next step.

Suppose the father and the mother are Aba ve Ima, Hochma, and Bina, and ZON, which is under them. Then they have to raise the desire generated by them even higher—to where are four kinds of death: stoning, strangulation, burning, and hanging. In such a way, this desire is killed, which means that it descends to the level of the inanimate, and then its development begins again.

The stone is Lev HaEven, the stony heart. Therefore, one desire is killed by another great desire, which does not give it the opportunity to acquire the slightest bit of life.
