Circumcision—Rejection Of Egoistic Desires

557Prophets, Joshua, 5:4: And this is the reason why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, all the men of war, had died in the desert by the way after they came out of Egypt.

To be circumcised means to refuse to use your egoistic desires. The cessation of their use began with the exodus from Egypt and lasted only 40 years in the desert. Thus, for 40 years, generations were born that were not circumcised.

For all the people that came out were circumcised, but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised.

Since these people were born outside of Egypt, they did not use the egoistic desires that had to be circumcised by those who lived in Egypt. In the desert, in the property when they have nowhere to receive from, they lived only by MAN, called manna from heaven, that which falls down to them from Bina. They were walking in this way all these years, nurturing themselves in order to reach the condition of entering the land of Israel.

The most important egoistic desire, which we cannot correct, is subject to circumcision. You can only reject it and not use it.

If we want to reach the quality of Bina, the spiritual quality, then we have no right to use our egoism for our own sake, and this is what is called the “foreskin.”

“And They Began To Eat The Produce Of This Land”

437And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and they made the Passover sacrifice on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

And they ate of the grain of the land on the morrow of the Passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain on this very day.
And the manna ceased on the morrow when they ate of the grain of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna anymore; and they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year. (Joshua 5:10-5:12)

The sons of Israel no longer receive nourishment from Bina, the highest level. They must earn this fulfillment, these powers, by themselves.

Therefore, it is said that they began to eat the produce of the land, which means the combination of the properties of Malchut and Bina. By using the properties of receiving and giving, they can combine them so that the land produces food.

Question: In the desert, they did not do this, but here they began to combine these qualities?

Answer: There is no property of Bina in the desert. Therefore, only MAN falls there. And when the people come to the border with the land of Israel, they have the opportunity to receive the property of Bina (bestowal), to mix it in the correct proportion with the properties of Malchut (reception), and to start producing food from the land.

This means that they must correct their desires themselves, but, of course, with the help of Bina, with the help of an upper force, the power of the Creator.

Question: In order to grow crops, do they need to start cultivating this land and ask for rain?

Answer: Yes, this is a whole system of working with our desire so that it begins to bear fruit. I take egoistic desires, cut them off so that only those desires that can be used for bestowal and love for others remain. And then I produce whatever the earth bears for the sake of others. And so does everyone in the land of Israel.

If I work with the intention for the sake of others, I cultivate the land, that is, I cultivate my egoism so that sprouts of altruism appear from it, which I give to others, then I fulfill the condition of life in the land of Israel.

Question: And then the rains come?

Answer: Not only that. The earth always bears fruit. And when the rains come, i.e., moisture appears in it, Bina, and it gives such fruits that they did not know before, as in the case of the scouts who saw huge bunches of grapes in the land of Israel.

Moisture in the earth only appears only if the people do not use their selfish intentions.

Guarding The Transition

747.02Question: Why did the priests not enter first when they went to the land of Israel? They waited until the entire army had passed and then they completed the transition.

Answer: The most important thing for them is to keep the border because it should be that all the people go through dry land. As was the crossing of the Red Sea, so it is here when crossing the Jordan. After everyone had passed, the functions of the priests were fulfilled at the moment and the waters closed again.

Comment: In some ways, this is similar to how Moses told Pharaoh that he would take everyone and wait until everyone came out.

My Response: But there was an exit from Malchut to Bina through Zeir Anpin—to the intermediate state of “desert.” Here there is a transition to Bina, to the property of bestowal.

When The Waters of Jordan Came Down…

562.03Question: When crossing to the land of Israel, the priests were the first to enter the waters of the Jordan, they waited until the entire army had passed, and then came out themselves. Only then did the waters of the Jordan go their own way. What does this mean?

Answer: The point of crossing the Jordan followed the example of the Red Sea. Just as the Red Sea parted after the Jews left Egypt, so it was here.

After each person and everyone together wished to rise above their egoism, above using it for themselves, renounced it, and switched to the side of Bina—the properties of bestowal, reciprocity, and unification—nothing more was needed.

Therefore, the waters of the Jordan closed behind them, as the waters of the Red Sea once did, and a clear border appeared again between all the lands and the land of Israel.

Comment: Interestingly, in Egypt, the Jews were chased by the army of Pharaoh, and here they are crossing in order to work.

My Response: There are no longer those who would persecute them, because after forty years of wandering in the desert they have freed themselves from all desires that could prevent them from passing through the Jordan. Freedom from egoism was their main work. But later on, other problems were in store for them.

“Their Heart Melted”

749.02Joshua 5:1: And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were on the side of the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until they had passed over, that their heart melted, nor was there spirit in them anymore, because of the children of Israel.

Question: Does the Creator show the peoples (egoistic desires) inhabiting the land of Israel that their end has come?

Answer: Yes, for this, the Israelites performed special actions: they united and rose above themselves until they suppressed their egoistic desires.

Therefore, these desires no longer prevented them from crossing the border from the desert to the land of Israel, meaning to take the last steps from Malchut to Bina, to the quality of bestowal.

In other words, those egoistic peoples inhabiting the land of Israel, which exist in each of us, already understand that a force has arrived that will not allow them to resist this state. And then there will be a rebound.

On one hand, it is said that there is no longer a spirit in them before the people of Israel. On the other hand, wars will begin because the Israelites themselves will cease to comply with the conditions of staying in the land of Israel, being in desires directed only to the Creator.

Then, accordingly, there will be different laws acting on the Jews, and, as it is written allegorically, they will be attacked by other tribes living in the land of Israel.

Question: Because the Jews abandoned the laws?

Answer: Of course. Exactly the same thing is happening today. The laws are immutable. By entering the land of Israel, we do not fit this land. Everything depends on us.

Passage From Jordan To The Land Of Israel

749.02Question: In the first chapters of the book “The Prophets” (Joshua), it states which laws should be followed. It is necessary not to deviate from the instructions of the Torah and not use your own mind, but the mind of the upper. Then everything will be fine. What does it mean to use the instructions that the Creator gave to Moses, to the people?

Answer: Leaving Egypt is a way out from under the power of egoism. The crossing of the Red Sea symbolizes separating from egoistic thoughts, desires, and motives.

Entering the desert is an intermediate state between the power of the Pharaoh and the power of the Creator. Therefore, the desert has its own laws that must be observed in order to pass this state.

And it is such that you cannot use your desires because they are selfish and have not yet been corrected. But you can be in a state of elevation above them and not apply them.

By fulfilling this condition, the people gradually approach the border of the land of Israel. Their movement continues for 40 degrees, from Malchut to Bina.

This means that egoism is constantly increasing , but in stages. And we must rise above it. The more egoism, the more a person rises above it, does not use it, and tries to bring all his thoughts and feelings closer to the property of bestowal, Bina.

When he passes through these states and breaks away from Malchut (egoistic desire), it is called that he crosses the desert and reaches the border of the entrance to the land of Israel.

Land, Eretz, is from the word “Ratzon” (desire). Yisrael (Yashar Kel) means “straight to the Creator.”

The crossing of the River Jordan means that the people completely break away from their egoistic past and enter a desire that is directed only toward the Creator. The transition is very symbolic.

When the people of Israel enter the land of Jordan, Moses (the property that guided them) breaks away from them, ascends Mount Nebo, and, looking from afar to the land of Israel, dies. Although it is written in the Torah that this place is unknown to this day, according to legend we know approximately where this happened.

And then all the nations that make up Israel, the so-called 12 tribes, that is, all the desires, cross the Jordan led by Joshua Ben Nun.

But they cannot just enter the land of Israel because this is a way out of an egoistic state into an altruistic one, and they still have some egoism left in them. In order to completely break away from the previous state, a person must finally cut off the last egoistic desires, the so-called foreskin, from himself. And the people perform this action.

Turn A Stony Heart Into A Live One

746.01Prophets, Joshua – Chapter 4:20: And these twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal.

Question: Why should we take our stony hearts and put them together as a monument?

Answer: In order to mark the place of transition from an egoistic state to an altruistic one.

Question: But being not yet corrected, do we, one way or another, enter the land of Israel with stony hearts?

Answer: No, we are breaking away from our stony hearts. They will continue to accompany us here and there, but not so that we are in them, but so we will work on them and rise. This is the so-called redemption, the capture of the land of Israel. With these terms, we pass into it.

In other words, our egoistic desires remain and turn from egoistic to altruistic. Therefore, we must constantly develop them, reveal their selfishness, which manifests both in wars and in what awaits the people in the land of Israel. We need to work on this all the time, but this work already consists in raising Malchut to Bina.

Question: It turns out that the children of Israel came out of Egypt with hearts of stone, carried them through the desert, and here they laid them down and the work began?

Answer: Yes. Lay down your heart of stone with the others. And later it will still wake up in you, but in order for you to gradually turn it into a living heart.

Everything Is Subjective

278.02The Book of Zohar, Ki Tissa, Item 54: All those friends who do not love each other depart the world before their time. All the friends in Rashbi’s time had love of soul and love of spirit among them. This is why in his generation, the secrets of Torah were revealed. Rabbi Shimon would say, “All the friends who do not love each other cause themselves to stray from the right path.” Moreover, they put a blemish in the Torah, since there is love, brotherhood, and truth in the Torah.

Question: Is the Torah an objective reality, a perfect object?

Answer: There is nothing objective. Even the Creator is not objective. Everything manifests itself relative to us.

If I perceive the entire universe from my senses, from my mind and heart, what can be objective here? If I change, it means that everything will change relative to me because the whole picture is subjective in me. The Creator is also in me. The Torah is also in me. Everything is in me. Is there something outside of me? I feel, I perceive, I evaluate.

Look at how people, by changing, change their opinion about the Creator and the Torah, about themselves and the world, about everything.

And what does “permanent world” mean—the one that is outside of us? We do not know it, we do not feel it, and so there is nothing to talk about here. We need to clearly agree that everything is only relative to the observer. Just like in quantum physics, according to Einstein’s theory. So, there is nothing absolute.

The Torah is a method of correction. To the extent that I understand how to correct myself, I have my own Torah.

The Torah consists of four parts—PaRDeS. In accordance with the egoism that I am now correcting, I realize and implement one of its parts.

The Creator has degrees. It is the property of bestowal, the property of connection of the entire universe into one global system to the extent that I perceive it.

Light Of The Torah

234Question: What is the Torah? Is it a book, is it light, a methodology?

Answer: The Torah is a method of correction. It is a set of rules and resources that I accept and apply with the advice of Kabbalists with all my skills and experience, everything that is written in books, everything that the upper light brings me, and everything I do in the group performing all sorts of actions together with the friends.

Everything I do to correct my egoism, to turn it into altruism, bestowal, and love, is called the Torah.

If by our actions we awaken our inner light, then it is called “the light of the Torah”.

Not The Number Of People, But The Power Of Souls

243.03Question: The Torah says that 70 souls descended into Egypt, although we know that there were tens of thousands of people. Why are we talking about this particular number?

Answer: To start with, there really were not many people in the time of Abraham. The Torah always refers not to the number of people, but to the power of souls.

“70” is a complete number because our soul consists of 70 parts. If these 70 parts are connecting together and aim their personal and common efforts to Keter, to the peak of connection, then this is called “complete work,” “the whole soul,” i.e., the connection with the Creator by combining  these qualities.
