The Outcome Of An Action

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus,” 21:15: And one who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

In this case a person cannot continue his correction since he is nourished by his “father” and “mother,” Abba and Ima. A strike means to harm the connection with them in such a way that a person disrespects and puts down this connection, breaking the Masach (screen) that his father and mother have given him. The attribute of Gevura from the left line reveals the ego that doesn’t want to be under the parents’ protection, under their Masach.

A person cannot continue his correction since all his corrections are fulfilled only by these two upper Partzufim, Abba and Ima. He refuses to acknowledge them, hits them, sends them away, draws away and removes their control over him, accepting their love in the form of hate that is opposite from him, and this is what actually kills him as a result.

There isn’t even one action in all these punishments. It’s all about the outcome of my action. There are no decisions to be made here. A person clarifies things and then his current level dies.

The Levels Of Ascent: From “Servant” To “Master”

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus,” 21:5-21:6: But if the servant shall plainly say: I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free; then his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.

By acquiring the attribute of bestowal, a person goes free, and he performs the action by himself, “I am not going, and I am staying here because I love my wife and my children.” He is ready to work with all the desires, with the attribute of bestowal, and takes the work with Malchut, with the ego, upon himself. Therefore, his desire is a deficiency, a “hole in the ear” in the attribute of Bina.

The ear symbolizes the attribute of Bina, bestowal. The hole that is made by the master is the feeling of deficiency a person still must correct, and this is what his wife and children symbolize.

A person cannot feel the deficiency that the Creator gives a person by himself and continue correcting himself. In order to feel this desire, the Creator creates an “opening” and gives him the feeling of a deficiency. It is because the attribute of Bina is the attribute of bestowal and in order to create a deficiency in it, one must ascend to a higher level. This is already the next level in which a person works with his new desire.

It is not a simple thing to create imperfection and it is only in the power of the Creator’s attribute. This is why He is called “Creator,” as He creates something external to Himself, outside wholeness. Everything he creates is lack of wholeness that only the Creator can create. It is not in a person’s power. We are always attracted to wholeness.

Now, when the servant has a desire to become a human being and he ascends to the level of Bina, to the level of freedom, he says, “I don’t want to be free because I love my wife and children. I want to correct this desire so that they will be with me.”

This means that he wants to ascend with them. It is a very sublime recognition, the attribute of Bina that wants to work with Malchut that wants to correct the creation. Thus, a person reaches adhesion with the Creator since he remains by his master forever.

If he grows so much that he feels the need to work with his wife and children, which means, with his whole egoistic desire, and can raise it further up, the Creator brings him closer to Him and helps him do so.

Thus, a person ascends from the level of a “servant” to the level of a “master.” First, he worked for the master as a slave but now, although the attribute of a servant remains, he already is called “God’s servant” who loves the master and who has attained Bina consciously.

On The Way To A Higher Level

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, Exodus, 21:17: “And one who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.”

“Father and mother” are two upper spiritual objects, two upper forces that enable you to correct yourself. They give you the power of wisdom and the power of spirit.

Question: But how could I curse them?

Answer: If you don’t want the upper level. You have to annul yourself before father and mother in order to receive it.

In our world there are many children who disagree with their parents, look down at them, and disrespect them, although actually both the parents and the children are greatly confused here. What is more the generation gap is constantly growing and everything is regressing.

In the spiritual world, however, everything is towards ascent; everything in it is opposite from our world. So a person who doesn’t understand the conditions of mother and father simply destroys himself, which means that he must be put to death. It is only by death, which means by recognizing the fact that one is totally detached from the upper Light, that he can feel his real state and begin to rehabilitate himself properly by establishing a good connection with the upper level of mother and father.

Question: Are the children the next level of the parents?

Answer: They have to ascend to that level and then while in it they become higher than their parents since they have ascended to it with their ego.

To Die In Order To Give Life To The Next Level

Dr. Michael LaitmanHe who fatally strikes a man shall surely be put to death. If he did not do it by design, but it came about by an act of God, I will assign you a place to which he can flee. (The Torah, “Exodus,” 21:12-21:13)

Question: There is a great debate on the corporeal level with regard to killing a man and as to whether to sentence the one convicted of killing to death or not. Every state has its own laws. There are states that have a death penalty and there are states that don’t. The Torah says plainly, “One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.”

Answer: On the corporeal level you must first prove that a crime was committed intentionally, whether it was a premeditated murder and whether there is evidence that a person actually died of a certain blow, etc. Perhaps there was room for such cases in ancient times since it is an indication of the moral level of a society and that, in principle, shouldn’t happen and cannot be.

There were no such cases in which a person was forced to kill someone and as a result both the murderer and the victim had to be sentenced to death. In this case, there has to be such a big egoistic desire of the two sides so that the Creator should arrange this for them, and as a result they would both be put to death. If there was a death sentence once every seventy years, it was considered a horrible thing.

In spiritual terms, in our inner replica, it means that one desire nullifies another desire since they cannot coexist in their current form and complement one another in a spiritual act. Therefore they should both die.

One desire kills the other desire, nullifies it, and also disappears, and there seems to be a destruction of the two. Nothing disappears just like that. The mutual nullification of the two desires is making room, since they cannot coexist being so opposite from one another. On the next level they are born in the form of one unified desire and they grow together. This is a correction. We should understand that every action is an act of correction. It is not bad in any way as we perceive it egoistically. If on the corporeal level one person kills another by chance (as we perceive it egoistically), a certain action takes place and he is punished accordingly.

On the spiritual level, however, it refers to two opposite desires between which there cannot be a middle line and so they have to mutually nullify themselves. But this nullification is the beginning of the next level, of the middle line, and it grows from there.

These two desires are inside me so that I cannot destroy one without destroying the other. I want to kill the egoistic desire inside me and I do that with the help of the altruistic desire, which also disappears in this desire since it cannot exist if it isn’t compatible with the egoistic desire; the plus doesn’t exist without the minus.

There is an altruistic desire in contrast to every egoistic desire and the movement towards the middle line that is between them is always in such pairs. But it is impossible to connect in the middle line itself in this state, and so they destroy one another and turn into a vacuum that the next level stems from. This vacuum is physical; it is a physical state, a size, an object.

Question: Are you for or against a death penalty in the corporeal world?

Answer: I believe that we can correct the world: everyone! By the way, this is the law the Torah speaks about. If you can correct a certain desire then under no circumstances should you kill it. Death, murder, including our death is one of the actions of correction.

Two Levels Of Desire: Father And Daughter

Dr. Michael Laitman“Now if a man sells his daughter as a maidservant, she shall not go free as the slaves go free.” (The Torah, Exodus, 21:7)

The Torah is only about the correction of the desires. Slavery is when one desire belongs to another stronger desire that can correct it. So in ancient times people lived a collective, social life.

“My daughter” is the desires that I discover but which I cannot correct by myself. I cannot marry my daughter; I cannot give birth to the next levels of my offspring. So by developing my desires, I don’t connect to the desires called “daughter” as a father, I don’t come to her with my Masach (screen), since another Masach has to control her, another desire. This means that she belongs to another. I sell her so that she will belong to someone else.

Therefore it says that “she shall not go out as the menservants do,” since the female desire should belong only to Bina where it is.

An Altar Made Of Desires

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah “Exodus,” “Jethro,” 20:19-20:20: And the Lord said unto Moses, “Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.” Gold is the left line, the attribute of receiving. Silver is the right line, the attribute of bestowal. This means that gold is what draws.

The Torah “Exodus,” “Jethro,” 20:21: “An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me…” Earth (Eretz in Hebrew) is a desire, which means, make an altar of your desires.

The Torah “Exodus,” “Jethro,” 20:21: “…And shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record My name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.” First there is an altar made of earth, of the desires on the level of the still nature, and then one sacrifices desires on the level of the vegetative, which is symbolized by different branches, plants, etc. Then the highest level is the level of the animate. A person does all this on the level of the “speaking.” Here all the levels of desire in a person are included, all the levels of nature.

Question: There were tribes that had human sacrifices.

Answer: It is because they believed that their idols needed such sacrifices. It is a whole system of different human aspects, of a person’s natural form, and of his inner attitude towards himself and the world.

We are all egoists and if I have a chance to take everything for myself, I do so. If I cannot do so because some people are against me and object to this, I contact them and have to pay them. This is not a desirable payment on my part, but I have no choice, I have to give in order to get something in return.

A person has the same attitude towards nature. If I want to receive something from nature and to feel comfortable, but then suddenly I am bombarded by storms, tsunamis, earthquakes, locust, wild animals, plagues, and death, what can I give as ransom so that it won’t happen? Who should I pay and for what? This is what all the religions are based on. So in some of them, people sacrificed what was dearest to them, other human beings.

Removing The Veil Of Concealment

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” 20:21: “And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

The Creator is the force of nature, the attribute of bestowal called Light. This is the Light of Hochma that created life and revives, it is the Light of warmth.

The “thick darkness” is an allegory for the concealment of the Light. There is a Masach (screen) that conceals the Light of Ein Sof (Infinity) like a veil, a cloud, as if it is in a kind of a capsule. A person doesn’t perceive or feel that it exists! But when he begins to form a Masach, he gradually removes the layers of the cloud of concealment accordingly.

In other words, there are five levels of desire in me. If I acquire a Masach on top of my first finest desire, I remove the finest layer of concealment (which is also made of five parts) and seem to partly enter this cloud.

When I continue to work, I focus the anti-egoistic Masach more accurately on me and advance in this cloud. To the extent that I can dress in the altruistic intention and in love of others, I enter the cloud. Thus, I attain a state in which I discover the Light, the attribute of bestowal directly in me. Gradually I become free of my ego and a person of Light.

Question: Why isn’t this last phase described in any of the books?

Answer: No one has attained the phase of the end of correction yet, it will happen only in the general end of correction. So there are still more presents and great revelations ahead.

Focusing The Energy On Mutuality

Dr. Michael LaitmanEverything in the world is made of two attributes: receiving and bestowal. It’s like fire and water, plus and minus, the North pole and the South pole, etc. These two polar states are the two attributes of nature which operate on matter and there is nothing else but these two attributes.

Matter is a desire to enjoy, to receive, to be filled. It’s the natural basis of matter. Every atom, for example, wants to preserve its form: A big atom wants to keep its form and weight in the periodic table, with the number of particles in its nucleus, etc.

Since everything is made of plus and minus, the plus and the minus have to be separated by some adaptor, like an engine that they are connected to and make work. What’s more, it has to be a beneficial charge. If it’s a harmful charge, like in an atom bomb, it leads to a collision and mutual destruction, as we sometimes say, a short circuit. When the two opposite attributes meet a great amount of energy is released since it’s directed outwards and not towards mutuality.

Every level of power, every attribute a person has, has its level of adaptation, which means the right resistance that can be between the plus and the minus. If the plus and the minus are small, the resistance can be small, and if the plus and the minus are big, the resistance has to be big too since otherwise there will be a “short circuit.”

All of a person’s desires to receive are graded with regard to the attribute of bestowal: the root level, phase one, two, three, and four, which means the five levels of Aviut (thickness). Accordingly, there are five levels of tension or five levels of the upper Light (bestowal) and the resistance between them.

The Torah tells us how they are graded. If I am in this state when I am opposite the Creator, which means that the attribute of receiving is opposite the attribute of bestowal, then the attribute of “Moses” in me can be one level below the Creator, which means standing next to Him, “face to face.”

The more tangible, thick, coarse levels should accordingly be removed. Therefore it says that Moses is closest to the Creator, then Aaron, the Levites, the men, the women, the elderly and the children. Then there are different herds, etc. This means that they are in a form of pyramid, or in circles around Mt. Sinai, “around” is the contact point with the upper attribute.

Why does it say “around the mountain” and not in a straight line? Because they have not acquired a Masach (screen) yet; they don’t have the line, and everything is still managed in circles.

The Parameter For The Equivalence Of Form To The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus, Jethro,” 20:17: And Moses said unto the people, “Fear not: For God is come to prove you and that His fear may be before you, that ye sin not.”

Fear is a very good attribute. A person understands that he cannot get closer to the Creator and is very careful of that. It’s like a person who has been released from prison and who knows that stealing is bad and thus makes sure he is two streets away from the bank. He knows what distance he has to keep in order to stay away from the temptation to steal. This is what it says here, since a person doesn’t have a Masach (screen), any protection yet.

So fear is essential and it’s the right thing. However in spirituality it’s called “awe.” Awe is the fear of disrupting the equivalence of form with the Creator. It’s not fear of punishment, there is no punishment! The disruption itself is the punishment without any implications. The only implication is the disruption. This means that a person has to be on such a moral level that being away from the Creator from the attribute of bestowal is the greatest punishment for him. So awe is the parameter for this feeling.

Question: You used to heal people’s fears. You have a table of about 800 different types of fears. Why do we think that fear is an illness?

Answer: I used to heal inner psychological states. On the spiritual level fear is a result of imbalance between the attribute of bestowal and the attribute of receiving. It’s the same root in every person but on a lower level. The study is in order to attain balance and then the fear disappears.

Unfortunately, conventional medicine simply represses fear by medicines. You see less and then you sleep better. Here, however, you don’t put a person to sleep but rather balance him.

“Seeing The Thunderings”

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus, Jethro” 20:16: And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off.

Question: What does it mean “seeing the thunderings?”

Answer: We perceive everything through the attribute of Bina. Bina is hearing and so we perceive the sounds by hearing. But when there is also the Light of Hochma in the attribute of Bina, the Light of life, sight appears in it, revelation to the eye.

Some prophets say “I have heard,” and others say “I have seen.” These are already prophets that draw the Light of life and are closer to the Creator. So the revelation of the Creator is the uppermost level, not only hearing but seeing. These are two levels of understanding, yet it doesn’t refer to corporeal seeing but to inner insight.

Question: It seems that the radio and television were also discovered according to these states.

Answer: First we discovered the lowest level of connection, by hearing through a cord, and then through electricity that runs in electric wires, and then through radio waves. But it took a long time until we discovered television; now seeing replaces reading and hearing and every other means. We receive most of the information in our world, 90% and more, by seeing, and it’s the same in spirituality since the Light of Hassadim, (the Light of Bina) is merely the infrastructure for the Light of Hochma.

The Creator is the Light of Hochma, and the Light of Hassadim dresses only on the Light of Hochma. To the extent that the created being wants to resemble Him, he receives the Light of Hassadim. This means that we prepare the vessel and the Light enters it.
