Kabbalah And Mental Abilities

laitman_623Question: You say that one doesn’t need any special intellectual aptitude to study Kabbalah, that the only thing needed is to attract the upper Light. Wouldn’t it be best if you just had uneducated students?

Answer: The fact is that you are talking about an animal, egoistic mind that helps a person in this world. The range of his intellect can be from a fool to Einstein, but it will not have anything to do with Kabbalah.

Therefore, the main thing for a person is a desire to attain the Creator, and it does not depend on any mental abilities.

Nevertheless, most of my students have higher education.

Question: But if they had no education, would it matter to you at all?

Answer: Absolutely not! Only the question about the meaning of life is important and a very great desire to realize it.

The Importance Of Making A Dictionary Of Accurate Spiritual Definitions To Replace Corporeal Definitions

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe main difficulty is that we cannot know what spiritual work is. It is neither in our sensation, nor in our intellect.

From the outset, we are people who belong to this world. We work with, understand, and discuss what we have in this world. It’s our life. The definitions in this world create a work space in us. Our world is full of definitions of receiving or giving in order to receive, within which we have greater or lesser sensation.

Our definitions accord to what pleases and pains us. This is because we are matter that desires to enjoy. Therefore, I can hear sounds, smell scents, and see things, their width and size, even though they seemingly don’t interest me. It doesn’t matter what it is, maybe it is mechanical phenomena: I always translate things into emotions. Then, in terms of whether or not I feel good, I process, feel, and live in those emotions, because whatever doesn’t enter my sensation doesn’t exist to me. I don’t see it, and really, it doesn’t exist because the world only exists in the field of my sensation: the desire to receive, to enjoy.

Therefore, we are programmed and created as sensing creatures, and what we enjoy and don’t enjoy is clear to us from our experience. As such, we form a picture of the world.

How does this relate to the wisdom of Kabbalah?

I started feeling bad in our world. Many people feel bad. You could even go as far as to say that most people feel bad. Also, it’s not just people, but the still, vegetative, and animate. However, other than feeling bad, i.e., I started feeling something unpleasant. Together with that, I start feeling an attraction to a different state. This is considered as the point in the heart waking up in my heart. Then, I start searching with this point: where is it pulling me? What does it want from me?

I arrived at the wisdom of Kabbalah. I started hearing all kinds of things, but I don’t know what is being taught. I could be studying for years, but I don’t exactly know what I’m studying. I turn up like a child who was sent to school. He doesn’t know why he’s there, but he’s there because all the other kids are there. Or maybe I feel comfortable here with my point in the heart. I feel somewhat at peace, secure, and that a good future awaits me.

But what is Kabbalah? I don’t understand it.

If you’d ask me, I could explain it using words that I read. But it’s not mine. Why? It’s because, again, the world that the wisdom of Kabbalah speaks about is not my world. It is something that I have neither in my understanding nor in my sensation.

I remember that when I was with Rabash, I used to sit at all kinds of meals, at the Kiddush he conducted during the Sabbath where he used to give all kinds of explanations on various articles and whatnot, and he would always talk about faith above reason, that everything is attained in faith above reason.

I understand what faith means. Faith means “I believe.” What does it mean “to believe”? It means that “I believe a certain thing exists.”

Why? Do you have proof?

No. If there were proof, then it would be knowledge. If there is no proof, then it is faith.

What, then, do you believe?

“I believe in God. It is what’s written.”

You believe in “Him”? That’s even more ambiguous.

What, then, is faith?

Kabbalists in the past, who started discovering the spiritual world—the quality of bestowal, love of others, “love your friend as yourself,” “love will cover all crimes,” where they started attaining that quality in their connection—named it “faith,” because it is the degree of Bina. There was never any other definition of the word “faith.”

However, afterward, when they started falling from the degree of faith, from the degree of bestowal and love—there is faith as “bestowal in order to bestow,” and complete faith as “reception in order to bestow”—and when they started falling from that degree, they held onto the understanding that it is correct, that they felt it in the past, and they were connected to many Kabbalists surrounding them in that same period, which was over 2,000 years ago, and they called their feeling “faith.” Then, the term “faith” started becoming tainted. It started becoming interpreted as “knowing as fact”: “knowing” not in terms of knowledge, but just accepting that it is how it is.

Therefore, until today, the concept of faith is very vague. We live in a way where everyone believes in what he thinks he needs to believe in.

Also, “faith above reason” is an incredibly difficult concept. We need to explain it to ourselves, beginners, and whoever studies with us. Faith above reason is the construction of the spiritual vessel, where we build the vessel of bestowal upon the vessel of reception, and as such, make spiritual progress.

It is thus very important for us to make a dictionary of correct definitions of the wisdom of Kabbalah by which we can show everyone how it speaks about a different reality, and how words that appear to be familiar to a person in this world immediately get defined differently in the wisdom of Kabbalah, by people in spiritual attainment.

That is also one of the difficulties we have in coming to revelation from the disturbances, where disturbances support revelation. Disturbances become supportive when we know how to accurately define them. That’s the difficulty. We will need to build that dictionary within us of accurate spiritual definitions to replace corporeal definitions so that we will clarify what is happening from now onward, where there is nothing in reality but the desire and the light that acts on it, and the desire needs to be defined properly, with real definitions, i.e., according to the extent in which the light acts on, divides, and hierarchizes it. That’s how we need to approach the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Who Reveals The Secrets Of The Universe?

laitman_548.02Question: Man has been endowed with a mind in order to think abstractly. When he starts studying the spiritual worlds, he can either materialize all of this or hover in the clouds. How can you take students who are unprepared and explain the secrets of the universe to them?

Answer: First, your statement is not entirely accurate. What do you mean by “students who are unprepared”? Newcomers are always unprepared and need to be educated.

Secondly, what secrets of the universe can I reveal to them if they don’t understand anything about that? If, for example, I were to take a tenth grader and sketch the structure of a nuclear bomb for him, would he be able to build one? Millions of people have worked on this for many years. We see how difficult it is for any nation to produce such a bomb, although the principle is well known.

Question: Suppose we study the “Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah,” which has sketches and the structure of the spiritual worlds?

Answer: But this needs to be explained gradually. There is nothing mysterious in Kabbalah. The “Preface” talks about the interaction of forces—the force of bestowal and the force of reception—and the connection between them. Generally speaking, the method is very simple to study and understand. It is difficult for a person to perceive and implement. That takes years.

Question: So if a newcomer comes and listens to the “Preface to the Wisdom of Kabbalah,” including sketches of the worlds and Partzufim, is this normal?

Answer: It does not matter. It is intended for everyone, with no exception. Nothing is concealed. It’s just that for now, the person does not understand Kabbalah because he still hasn’t reached these truths. There is a specific internal threshold within which it interests him, and outside which it doesn’t. And to the extent it interests the person, he understands everything.

There are people who study with us, say, for ten years, and only after ten years do things fall into place all of a sudden and he starts thinking and perceiving differently. Then a few years later they fall into place again. He seems to be hearing the same things, but the channel of perception opens up.

Does Psychology Help In Kabbalah?

laitman_547.04Question: I know from my experience that studying Kabbalah is very helpful in the work of a psychologist. Does a professional knowledge of psychology and psychiatry help or hinder advancement in the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: It doesn’t help at all. Either you are dealing with standard reactions that go on in the beast called a “human being” and trying to balance these with the influences that it receives in this world, or you are dealing with the upper world. It is one of the two.

I do not know what you mean by “Kabbalah” and how you can use it, I also do not want in any way to diminish your spiritual degree. It could be that you have an initial theoretical knowledge that helps you adapt to reality, but psychology speaks about how to get along in this world, while the wisdom of Kabbalah speaks about how to rise up from this world.

It is the same thing with physicists. I often meet with scientists and am interested in all the achievements, but in general we have nothing to say to each other because we have different instruments for perceiving the world.

I can’t imagine how a psychologist could use Kabbalah in daily, practical work. Maybe only by telling a person that everything that acts on you comes from the Creator, so don’t worry everything will be fine.

However, this is Kabbalistic psychology. It is not intended to calm a person down, but rather, advance the person.

Obedience Or Criticism?

laitman_530Remark: You say that one must obey his teacher and listen to his advice without any criticism. On the other hand, I heard you say during the lessons that criticism is important and doubt is unavoidable on the path. Moreover, it helps students in their advancement. Please clarify this contradiction.

My Comment: There is no contradiction here. On one hand, in our movement forward, we have to obey the teacher completely since he sees what we should do many steps ahead and we do not; we could not only make a mistake, but could steer off the path.

On the other hand, when we start advancing following the right direction and the teacher, we can figure out all the nuances of our advancement. And this is considered normal. Naturally, all study is based on questions and answers.

Question: And what about criticism?

Answer: How can you criticize the upper Partzuf if you are not on its level? The teacher has his own intentions and his own plans that you know nothing about because he is on a level higher than you. Therefore, everything that is revealed to him is concealed for you.

Question: If a person starts to criticize us, can he go to another teacher, a third, a fourth, and then realize that the truth is here and come back?

Answer: Generally, yes. But the teacher may not accept him back. However, if you do come back and are accepted, hold on to it with a bulldog’s stranglehold and start advancing.

Question: You say to listen to the teacher in spiritual matters, not corporeal life. But my friends in the group tell me that if I want to advance spiritually, I must imitate my teacher in everything. Is it customary in Kabbalah or not?

Answer: That is Hasidism. No Kabbalist would demand their students to imitate him.

The Connection Between Teacher And Student

Laitman_721.01Question: Does a Kabbalist teacher choose his students himself or does a student pursue the teacher and ask to be taught?

Answer: It isn’t either of those ways. The teacher and the student are determined from above. They are brought closer to each other so that the relationship is established at a certain distance. As they engage with connection to the Creator, the student gets closer to the teacher.

Question: Did Rabash come and take you from your first teacher Hillel?

Answer: Yes, because I could not leave Hillel by myself. I could not tear myself away from him because my egoism received pleasure, answers, and fulfillments that were indescribable.

And with Rabash, it was the opposite. He sat down and opened Talmud Eser Sefirot. I barely understood a word. Rabash, I, and several other people sat and read throughout the lesson. Here we were dealing with the attraction of the upper Light according to our intention. And with Hillel, I was simply engaged in obtaining knowledge.

Question: What are the connections between a student and a teacher?

Answer: There is a connection between them only through the Creator, nothing else. Everything moves through them for the sake of attaining the higher goal.

Answers To Your Questions, Part 201

Laitman_088Question: Society has been trying to create artificial intelligence. The basic laws of the universe clearly regulate this point. The importance of understanding the fundamentals of the programming of reality is simple. Can you explain these simple and important fundamentals?

Answer: This is precisely what the wisdom of Kabbalah is about. But it is difficult for a person to understand this because he is constructed differently. The egoistic mind is incapable of thinking in terms of the spiritual world that is opposite to ours. So only the influence of the upper light will change us, and when it does we will be able to begin to think according to the laws of the upper world.

Why Kabbalah Is a Mystery To Us

laitman_219.01Baal HaSulam, in the “Introduction to The Study of Ten Sefirot” writes: “All the written and printed books are necessarily considered the Taamim of the Torah,” … “And there is no greater disclosure than writing a book.” “The part called ‘secrets of the Torah,’…you will not find even a trace of them in all the books of Kabbalah, in writing and in print.”

And this is really so. In fact, there are no secrets. They are mysteries to us because they relate to such levels of attainment our minds have no grasp of.

This is not the coordinate system, level, or the matrix dimension that we exist in today. So don’t be afraid of any problems. We have a lot of spiritual ascent ahead of us in order to enter such states where we begin to unfold the so-called mysteries.

They are attained by a spiritual mind, not the current one that can only add, subtract, multiply, and divide. A spiritual mind is a state that has no space, time, or movement. A mind that serves egoism is not suited for it.

Here you need a mind that works on the quality of bestowal—outside of yourself. We cannot imagine such a state. It is not a supercomputer but simply states unattainable for our current perception.

Remark: Baal HaSulam writes in the “Introduction to The Book of Zohar” that if we unite, heed the inner part of the Torah, than everything will be good; if not, it will be bad. He writes about the possibilities of third and fourth world wars. Actually, most of the journalists today are already writing about it too.

My Comment: What can we do? We have reached the end of the road. We have been speaking about it for many years, and today everyone is starting to agree.

Remark: It follows that if we progress naturally, it will be bad, but if we study Kabbalah, everything will be fine.

My Comment: No, it is not just studying it—implementing it. There is a big difference. I can open a book, lie on the couch, and wait for world peace. No! It is necessary to actualize Kabbalah, in our own experience, in our connections with everyone.

The Torah And Kabbalah

laitman_527.04Question: Kabbalists take texts from the Torah, explain them, comment on them, and then say that this is Kabbalah. Is there a difference between the Torah and Kabbalah?

Answer: The Torah is Kabbalah. In Hebrew Kabbalah is called “Torah Emet,” that is, the “true Torah.” It talks about the inner meaning of what the Torah describes in an allegorical language.

In the “Introduction to the Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Baal HaSulam writes that Kabbalists had no other way to explain the structure of the upper world other than by using the language of this world. In fact, the Torah is not written about our world but only about the interactions of forces and qualities of the spiritual world.

Question: What came first Kabbalah or the Torah? What is the difference between them?

Answer: The Torah was written nearly 3,000 years ago and Kabbalah, the science of the control system of our world, appeared much earlier.

The Difference Between Kabbalah And Psychology

laitman_547.05Remark: There are many psychologists taking our Kabbalah courses. One of the lectures is even dedicated to explaining the difference between Kabbalah and psychology because it is not readily apparent.

My Comment: Psychology deals with a person’s behavior—with an egoistic being of our world. It studies the ways he reacts to things that happen to him.

Kabbalah deals with revealing who influences a person, what happens to him and what under influence, how he should prepare for his reaction, and so on. That is, this is a completely different level.

A Kabbalist and a psychologist have not only different goals, but also different audiences. One deals with ordinary people in our world and the other with people who study Kabbalah.

Question: Do you think that one who is attracted to common earthly psychology will not be drawn to Kabbalah?

Answer: Let him study psychology and not confuse it with Kabbalah. It will only harm him.
