A “Reset” Of Desires On The Level Of Developed Egoism

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Statistics show that good relationships at work increase the loyalty of the employees to their company and even prevent the risk of a premature death. However, colleagues continue to fight, be mad at one another, stand their ground, and fight for their interests. Why is it impossible to neutralize these conflicts?

Answer: Everything the modern world has tried over the last 20-30 years is somehow attempts to connect all into a single whole, to give people a feeling of softness, harmony, cooperation, to bring a team to a certain common ground, common plans and solutions, to ignite a spark in their work. But all has been to no avail.

Before, when a manager would “throw” an idea, people would become excited and follow him, but now nobody wants anything, even for money.

People come to work like “zombies” only because they have to make a living so as to not become tomorrow’s homeless. They are not able to communicate with each other. Half asleep, they spend their time at work and leave at the end of the day.

People have lost the taste for work; they have no purpose. There is no one and nothing to ignite; there are no longer social groups producing new great ideas like before when egoism was still in the process of development.

But now is the time of advanced stage of egoism, which is becoming integral. And this is why we are losing the goals, fulfillment, and interests that we once held. There is none of that today.

This is why it is very difficult for bosses and the managers to keep their employees interested. They are not able to do it because they have to force themselves to work. And this continues to drop and regress from day to day, from year to year.

A person has no motivation to do anything: For what?—I force myself to work. Of course I would be glad to keep receiving my pathetic “pennies,” and nothing else concerns me. I do not care about production, the team, work itself, rank, or inner calling. People have lost any motivation to work; they do not even care about the monetary reward.

It is just that our desires, which are our very inner material, are going through a very serious “reset.” They are changing from personal to collective. But we do not know how to fulfill collective desires.

Moreover, we do not perceive that these desires are collective, but we keep feeling an ever-increasing dependence on one another, and we try to escape it, each to his own niche. A person approaches me, and I am already ready to burn him with my eyes. In advance, I’m prepared to push that person away.

This is a universal problem, but it is not our fault. Managers need to understand this, and at the same time fight these problems within themselves.

The only solution is to explain this state to the company’s employees, show them the statistics, and somewhat explain the method of integral upbringing. When we involve people in the workshops, they develop completely new desires: collective and round, not individual and linear, integral instead of discrete. And we get a completely different person.

This person perceives himself and the team as a single whole. He begins to see that when he becomes involved in his team, he begins to breathe, he opens his eyes, he can think clearer, he begins to hear, everything becomes sharper—he awakens. He begins to feel that life has a spark; there is enthusiasm.

Once we explain that uniting with others is necessary for revealing a new common, collective desire where one will experience enthusiasm, common life, common fulfillment, then despite one’s dependence on a team, a person will enjoy it because this dependence is round and comprehensive. Everyone needs it because we will feel light and free, life will be a pleasure, and we will soar as if we had wings.

Today, people are ready for anything because this is the biggest problem in the world. Suicide, drugs, depression, divorce, crime, terrorism, and everything else happen because of emptiness; we have nowhere to hide from ourselves. Give people fulfillment and all this will go away.

It’s Good At Home, But It’s Better With The Team

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: A new form of work has developed, “remote work or telecommuting” when an employee does not go to the office, but stays at home at his computer and goes to the office a couple times a month. Is this good or bad?

Answer: I think that in this case a person will still suffer from depression and emptiness. He needs to feel an integral connection. Working alone will not be effective enough. Today it is relevant because it is convenient for an employee, for an employer, and for a mother with children, but this is a temporary process.

In any case, a person will need to be integrated into a system, either at the place of residence or on the basis of something else. He must constantly fulfill his new desire, feel that he is inside an integral system. After all, the integral egoism that appears in us will still lead us to this. We are not free; nature develops us in this way.

A High Salary Does Not Help with Depression

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Let us say that over the course of integral education, people have felt one another very well and become friends. How is this beneficial to the employer? Friendship is good, but what will happen to productivity?

Answer: Currently, the available data shows how people’s stubbornness, their inner hostility, their lack of desire to work and advance, stalls any productivity and scientific research. Statistics show that the productivity of an unhappy employee is 40% less than the productivity of a happy one, and these are good results because usually, the “hidden rocks,” the different obstacles, and the lack of desire to work stall productivity even more.

However, the advantage of the integral interconnection comes through in a direct improvement of productivity, a decrease in absences due to sickness, better attitudes toward one another, a stable family, and improvement in every aspect. Not only does the person feel a general improvement in his mood and thus works better, and not only does he become friendlier toward others, but together, they all feel that their common work gives them something. The person becomes so fulfilled that the salary becomes less important to him than the pleasure he receives from work, even if it is a low paying job.

Man is a simple being; he is not a mechanism, nor is he an animal that blindly obeys its instincts. This is why when we refer to a “salary,” we imply the entire combination of pleasure a person receives from work, creativity, and his union with others, from the fact that he enjoys work, that he is not as tired since there are no more conflicts, that there is general kindness in his family since he comes home from work in a good mood.

This way, people start feeling so fulfilled by the general complex of sensations that according to the dynamic of the development of humanity, people will not be working for a salary. In reality, there will be communism, not the kind of communism the Soviet society practiced, but the kind that really will provide people with the necessary normal, rational existence. However, all his pleasure actually will come from the integral system because he will receive fulfillment, the feeling of kindness, and plenty of nice sensations from all the other people.

A person changes and thus, he needs a greater fulfillment. There is no way to avoid this. We see that namely in the countries that have high salaries and social assistance, for example, the countries of Northern Europe, a large percentage of people are depressed. And what about the number of suicides in developed countries? This is because people do not yet receive the fulfillment that they need at the end of their evolutionary development.

When A War Will Seem As Deliverance

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Recently, I’ve been visiting at the hospital frequently and I notice that some patients lack a basic drive for life. People do not cling to life. What has happened to this basic desire?

Answer: It disappears in sick people, and the elderly, and the young. This is the natural course of evolution: The egoistic desire is growing, not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively.

We still judge by quantity; we strive to a greater scale, greater luxury, but in the meantime, the quality changes. And suddenly we discover that development requires something higher, values that do not exist in our world. There are new requests in me, and my environment cannot give me answers to them. It turns out that I have nothing to do here, there is nothing to look for, nothing to live for, nothing to enjoy because I do not just seek pleasure, but want to discover something more essential.

But wait, what essence is there? People themselves do not know what they want.

This is because our world has nothing more to offer them. And then the defense mechanisms of the body push many, especially the younger generation, to all kinds of whims and follies, as well as to suicide, drugs, terrorism, and anything negative. They are looking for something, but cannot find anything. Today, a new egoistic desire is manifested, which sees a wall in front itself: “What have I come to? The world is lifeless. Why am I here?”

People whose mind and feelings have not been yet developed enough become economists, lawyers; in short, they look for success in life. They are still attracted by something, enticed by some benefit. But those who have evolved a bit more can no longer find anything worthwhile for themselves. They initially have no taste for life, and this produces much more serious phenomena than we see on the surface. After all, the media and Internet save many people from suicide. The general opinion makes everyone participate in these “games,” distractions from the main question. But soon, this will end; in six months or a year, the wave will subside, and we will see how media resources and virtual reality lose their popularity.

And then a problem will emerge: how to occupy people? By that time, the number of unemployed will increase; the scale of deprivation will grow. A person will have nowhere to go, even the means that used to be before will disappear…

Question: It is known that the statistics of depression and emptiness are increasing. Where will people get a new desire that will lead them on the spiritual path?

Answer: In fact, it is impossible without the “Light” from above. Of course, we will not be able to awaken them if we do not get the Light for us and for them, according to the principle “the first-born takes double.” Only in this way, will we be able to show them the way, to show them a spark of the Light, which is enough for everyone. In the end, it is our duty.

And if not, the only alternative is a world war. People would feel that that would be better than to continue to live as before. No one will oppose a war. On the contrary, in this month, many looked forward to the end of the world, hoping for at least some diversity. “It hasn’t come yet? Well, let’s wait for the next one…” People will embrace a war, albeit unconsciously…

The Generation That Is Revealing The Mystery Of The Universe

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe science of Kabbalah should be revealed to a person only when he wants to understand the meaning of life. However, if he doesn’t yet possess this desire, if he’s totally immersed in the life of this world and is only concerned with securing his life for the time of his existence, then there’s no point in telling him about the science of Kabbalah. It isn’t for him and it can only confuse him. Let him continue his egoistic development and not touch upon the science of Kabbalah.

It’s for this reason that the Kabbalists throughout the centuries have concealed this science, waiting until humanity reached a state in its development where it began asking about the meaning of life. We see this now in the great problems of the world, in the comprehensive general crisis that permeates absolutely every sphere of human activity.

This is evident by humanity’s current depressed state, reflected in the number of suicides, and by the fact that the world is on a downslide and can’t do anything about it. Everyone is on a downslide, the elite as well as regular people. There’s a gradual disappearance of the middle class, manufacturing industry is fading; we’re losing interest in life. We don’t know what to do. We realize that there’s a possibility of a third world war, but we view this calmly as though it’s our fate pulling us somewhere, because we realize that we have no strength, no knowledge or even desire to put up any resistance. Alienation and powerlessness reign in the world.

It’s precisely in this generation that the science of Kabbalah must be revealed because from it they will not only understand how to exit the current state, which has left them hopeless, but also to discover what awaits them in the future: an eternal, perfect, whole, exalted state, which is billions of time greater than anything we could ever feel in this world.

Spanish Banks Provoke Suicides

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from The Wall Street Journal): “Spanish government and opposition leaders are moving toward an agreement to loosen century-old housing-foreclosure laws amid an uproar over the suicides of two homeowners who were facing eviction. …

“Housing foreclosures are one of the most visible human dramas of Spain’s economic crisis, with the number of court-sanctioned evictions climbing steadily since the collapse of a decade long housing bubble in 2008. Rising unemployment, which now exceeds 25%, is aggravating homeowners’ difficulties in meeting mortgage payments.

“Spanish courts authorized nearly 19,000 evictions during the second quarter of 2012, compared with 5,614 in the first quarter of 2008, according to Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary.”

My Comment: From here, it is close to a rebellion and civil war. Only the introduction of mass integral education is able to calm and organize life because it explains to people the cause and meaning of what is going on and how to act in this case: In the created integral community everyone needs to change their attitude from mutual hatred to mutual guarantee and love.

How To Become Happy

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Jane Jones,  David Wong): ”If 80s movies taught us anything, it’s that at some point you’re going to run into a mysterious relic that lets you switch bodies with other people.

“Would you use it? But let’s say the artifact doesn’t let you choose, but will instead switch you randomly with one of the other six billion people on the planet. Virtually nobody will take that deal, for fear they’d switch with some poor villager in Nigeria.

“So what does that say about us? Well, according to experts, it says almost everything we think about what would make us happy is dead wrong. Let’s look at the five things we’re most wrong about…

“#5 Fame…

“This is brand new to humanity, for thousands of years, material goods and security dominated. Now, fame is at the top. Obviously part of the reason is the perception that anybody can get famous these days–reality TV and YouTube have proven that you can become a celebrity for doing not a…thing. But there’s another, less obvious factor. And it explains why so many famous people are miserable.

“So What’s the Problem

“Experts say where you find kids who desperately want to be famous, you find a history of neglect at home. Parents were either absent completely or, at best, emotionally distant…. It turns out the whole surge in aspirations for fame came right along with the explosion of single parents and ‘broken’ homes. Only half of today’s children live with their original two parents.

“You can see how this sad mechanism works in the attention-starved mind. The kid is programmed by biology to love a parent, but the parent doesn’t return the love. Fame lets them turn the tables on that arrangement. When you’re famous, millions love you, but you don’t even know their names. It’s purely one-sided. They wait for hours in the cold for your autograph, you barely glance at them on the way to your limo. You get to take their love and wipe your…with it, the same as your parents did to you.

“But it turns out that kind of massive, paper-thin adoration is a poor substitute. Famous people are four times as likely to commit suicide as the rest of us (…you’d think it’d be higher–everybody reading this has seen more than one of their favorite performers self-destruct).

“#4 Wealth…

“Hey, remember when we said earlier that most people wouldn’t do the body-switching thing for fear they’d wake up in Nigeria? Well according to surveys, Nigerians are happier with their lives than the people of any other country.

“The USA came in 16th.

Hey, did we mention that the average Nigerian makes $300 a year? That’s less than a hundredth of what the average American makes. America being the country that hands out 120 million prescriptions for anit-depressants every year.

“China is turning into a great object lesson in this, as their economy explodes and incomes skyrocket, but levels of happiness and personal satisfaction are dropping at the same rapid rate.

“There’s a couple of reasons for it. First, your brain adjusts feelings of happiness downward after you’ve reached some goal or other. It regulates the good feelings, presumably so that you have motivation to reach the next goal instead of just lounging by the pool for the rest of your days. …

“#3. Beauty…

“Yes, being physically attractive has concrete advantages. Attractive people earn more, get better grades, have better jobs and find more successful partners than average or ugly people. Strangers are more likely to help them in a crisis. They have wider social circles.

“So What’s the Problem

“Remember, we’re talking about happiness here, not success. For one, attractive people have the same self-esteem problems the ugly people do. Like money, attractiveness is relative and if you’re hotter than your friends, at that stage you start comparing yourself to people in the media. You know, like the magazine covers we mentioned before, the ones that that have had the living…Photoshopped out of them. …

“#2.Genius

“We’re using the broader definition of the word “genius” here, meaning anyone with an extraordinary talent or skill. …

“Want to know what it’s like to live life as a genius? All you have to do is go hang around with the stupidest, most incompetent people you know. Cringe at their stupid jokes, feel the frustration as they fumble even the easiest tasks and fail to grasp the simplest concepts. Being a genius must be like that, only everyday. Everyone is an idiot compared to them. They’re living Idiocracy. …

“If you’re not the Einstein kind of genius, it doesn’t matter, any situation where you’re 10 levels above your coworkers is going to be daily frustration. If you’re a genius at spreading concrete, that feeling only occurs to you in the form of everyone else being sloppy and helpless. No wonder they wind up treating people like dirt.

“Not that you’d have time for friends anyway. Genius takes practice. Lots of it. …

“All of this is a great recipe for the stereotypical depressed, moody genius who dies alone and bitter.

“Wait, it Gets Worse…

“If your genius lies in some kind of creative field, then there’s a good chance you have actual mental illness to deal with. While only one percent of the population suffers from bipolar disorder, it is claimed that 50 percent of poets, 38 percent of musicians and 20 percent of painters have it. It’s just part of the package.

“Compare the number of great musical innovators who have died of suicide or drug overdose versus, say, the number of plumbers who have died the same way. It might be better to just stand in the poop all day.

“#1.Power…

“…power is what everything else on this list is about. Fame is about having power in the relationship with the fans. Beauty is about gaining power through others’ sexual desire and jealousy. Genius means society needs your skills more than you need its approval. Money . . . well, money and power are conjoined twins. …

“So What’s the Problem

“Maybe you’re eying the kind of job where you’ll be the boss, or maybe you want to go into law enforcement. Or maybe you’re just driven by that bitter, unspoken urge almost all of us feel at least once in our youth: ‘I’ll show them! I’ll show them all.’…

“It has nothing to do with the ‘culture of corruption in Washington DC’ the Libertarians are always talking about. You find it everywhere, from the…supervisor to the bitter gym coach. Small people driven to mindless, unethical behavior, drunk on just a few drops of…power. They often can’t make friends, their marriages end badly, they self destruct. The world is full of these miniature, sad Tony Montanas, destined for a proverbial bloody downfall.”

My Comment: Research shows that friendship, altruism, and community service bring happiness and satisfaction. Detachment from attempts to arrange personal, individual happiness and focus on others is what makes happiness possible.

Depression: The Disease Of The Century

Dr. Michael LaitmanSurvey (from The European Depression Association): “One in 10 working people surveyed in Europe have taken time off work because of depression, with an average of 36 days lost per episode of depression, according to a new survey from the European Depression Association. This equates to more than 21,000 days of lost working time in this group of people. However despite the size of the problem, nearly one in three managers reported they had no formal support or resources to deal with employees who have depression, and 43% called for better policies and legislation to protect employees.

“Depression is the predominant mental health challenge among working-age people and more than 30 million European citizens will suffer from depression at some point in their life.1 The IDEA survey (Impact of Depression in the Workplace in Europe Audit) polled more than 7,000 people in Europe and found that 20% of respondents had received a diagnosis of depression at some point. The highest rate was in GB (26%) and the lowest in Italy (12%). Among workers experiencing depression, those in Germany (61%), Denmark (60%), and GB (58%) were most likely to take time off work, while those in Turkey were the least likely to take time off (25%).

“The costs of depression were estimated at €92 billion in 2010 in the EU, with lost productivity due to absenteeism (taking time off work) and presenteeism (being present at work while ill) representing over 50% of all costs related to depression.1 In the IDEA survey the average number of days taken off work during the last episode of depression was 36 days, with Germany and GB having the highest (41 days) and Italy (23 days) having the lowest.”

My Comment: In general, depression is the most common disease of our time. Just because it is not fatal and is hidden, it can be easily concealed, and it does not bother society. Where do the current and future unemployed belong? Undoubtedly, with the growth of individual egoism and its transformation into integral egoism that is shown in the interdependence of everyone and everything, depression will grow and turn into the epidemic.

With the economy continuing to struggle in the areas that hit people hardest  – home and jobs – the next survey is unlikely to show an appreciable drop in pain, possibly not for years to come. …

“As families struggle financially, they often change.

“Anxiety and depression take seats at the dinner table. Children – with their receptors to parental mood always running wide open – will sense the change in household tone. They will pick up on even the subtle shifts in the rhythms of daily routines.

Worse, they may see the loss of homes, changes in schools and friends, even verbal and physical abuse as the family fault lines crack under the unrelenting stress of getting through the month.

“Children pushed into poverty by a recession, the report says, are three times more likely to be poor themselves than those who managed to stay more affluent. ‘In short,’ say the authors, ‘the conditions of today will give rise to the next generation of poor Americans.’

“The recession has also had its way with the trust and expectations of young adults — particularly the younger end of the Millennials. …

“They are forced to assume that ‘everything that came before them was a mirage – that it was built on unsafe foundations.’

“People will find their way back to confidence. But especially for those growing up under the weight of its fearsome uncertainties, it will be with us for generations to come.”

My Comment: Integral upbringing obliges our creating public dining rooms, clubs, athletic fields, voluntary childcare, and a cultural mass leisure, and so on. It is about creating an environment that will raise up the people of the future, and not grow the lumpenproletariat. The problem is not in the means, but in the desire to organize that our egoism stops.

“Unhappiness By The Numbers”

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Healthline): “As if depression weren’t bad enough, statistics show that diagnoses are growing at an alarming rate. In addition, states with higher rates of depression also show high rates of other negative health outcomes, such as obesity, heart disease, and stroke. … Despite all of these statistics on depression, this infographic shows that many people suffer symptoms of depression without seeking care, and that undiagnosed depression costs the U.S. millions of dollars each year.”

My Comment: Since the entire nature is the desire to enjoy, from the desire to maintain its structure in inanimate matter to the desire to develop maximally in the animate nature, then the feeling of emptiness is the most obvious sensation in the desire, its “exposed” suffering. That is why precisely in our time is when egoism must begin its correction, it discovers emptiness, a lack of fulfillment.

This is intended to assist us in correcting egoism, rejecting it. And instead, we invent methods of satisfying it, and thus just increase and extend our suffering. If like a smart child, we had understood at once that we should do otherwise, we would have quickly come out of suffering and found a comfortable existence. But we are like the stubborn fool who wants to act in his own way, and as a result, we increase our suffering and stretch it for many years.
