Thought Concentration

219.01Question: On what thought should one concentrate in order for the potential of receiving upper light to be truly realized? What should I think about?

Answer: You should think about how to understand your teacher, what Baal HaSulam, wrote for you.

I don’t know how many times I have read it, but probably not less than a hundred times. Try to imagine all the time that you are participating in this action.

The Ten Sefirot of the World of Akudim

548.03Akudim are regarded as the ten Sefirot of the Toch of the first Partzuf the reality that follows the first restriction, called Adam Kadmon. Prior to that there weren’t any Rosh, Toch, Sof in the upper light, but rather the upper light filled the entire reality (Baal HaSulam, “Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Vol. 1, Part 4, Chapter 1, Inner Light, Item 8).

Question: What are the ten Sefirot of the world of Akudim?

Answer: The collective ten Sefirot related to this entire structure are called “Akudim.”

These are Kelim, desires that are filled with lights and exist around us in order to let some part of the upper light through to us. With their help we can gradually, step by step, approach the upper light, begin to feel it, enter into some kind of connection with it, and thus go further higher and higher.

Movement Calculated by the Creator

942Prayer must be in a group, otherwise the Creator will not hear it. We learn this from the structure of the ten Sefirot, from all of our spiritual work.

The Creator is Keter (the crown), above which there is what is called Kutso shel Yud, the highest point of Keter, the highest Sefira. That is contact with Him.

Only after I “grasp” all my friends, am ready to include them in myself and do everything necessary for them to agree to unite, am ready to be the lowest, the smallest in relation to them, then I can hope that they will respond to me in kind and a group will be formed, i.e., a structure in which the quality of bestowal, the Creator, will be revealed.

In this movement it doesn’t matter how much I fall, because advancement cannot be continuous. It is always start-stop, like the swinging of a pendulum in a clock. We cannot swallow a great egoism and rise above it, then take on another great egoism and rise again. We can only work with milliseconds, microseconds. It is by such micro-doses that we move forward.

Therefore, to the extent that we have mutual guarantee (Arvut) and the support of the group, we can receive a greater descent from the Creator and accordingly make a greater ascent.

Our descent comes from the Creator. It is always calculated by Him in advance so that we can rise voluntarily and consciously. He never gives us descents in which we collapse without knowing where we have fallen. They are always, as in a mother-child relationship, measured and precisely calibrated so that by gathering ourselves a little after the fall, we can find some strength within and begin to rise again.

So we must not think that the Creator wants to break us. He only wants to lower us slightly so that we may see the next level of our already broken egoism and begin to raise it. Just as we draw water from a well bucketful by bucketful, lifting it upward, that is how we work.

The fact that we seemingly lose the higher degree is not a loss, but precisely the first stage of ascent, the left side. Movement forward begins with the left foot, with the revelation of evil that the Creator prepared in advance. Then comes its compensation by the right line. That is how we advance.

That is why Baal HaSulam says that as soon as we wake up in the morning, we must immediately take upon ourselves the work of uniting with one another and with the Creator, from that very moment. This is extremely important! If I keep this thought in me at all times, then everything works out quickly and easily.

Where Does Free Choice Take Place?

282.01Question: In TES (The Study of the Ten Sefirot) it is said that the true Kelim exist in the world of Atzilut. But we also study that at that stage there is still no separation from the Creator. At the same time, we learn that the entire system was created precisely to enable free choice and that the true Kli exists where there is free choice. So is there free choice in the world of Atzilut?

Answer: No, in the world of Atzilut there is still no free choice.

While on our level, we try to gather all the actions that belong to the lower and raise them to the higher, so that the illumination from a higher level would influence us and so we could gradually, step by step, reveal the forces of increasingly higher degrees.

Question: Then what is the true Kli? What parameters are included in it if it is not free choice?

Answer: Free choice is not yet a Kli. It is only a certain intention from below upward. Therefore, free choice takes place when the lower ones, that is, people in our world, feel some influence of the light upon themselves and strive toward their higher root.

Creator and Torah on the Spiritual Path

076Question: How can a person envision the concepts of the “Creator” and the “Torah” on the spiritual path?

Answer: The Torah is the entire light that corrects us and the light that then fills us.

Baal HaSulam writes in the “Introduction to The Book of Zohar“: Each of the 613 organs in that Partzuf fully shine in their own unique way, each as an independent Partzuf. Then there opens before him the possibility to engage in each Mitzva according to its true intention, for each organ in Partzuf Neshama illuminates for him the paths of each Mitzva related to that organ.

Through the great power of those lights, he purifies the speaking part of his will to receive and inverts it into a desire to bestow.

He explains that our desire consists of 613 parts, completely egoistic and broken. These broken desires are corrected by our request and from our efforts to connect with one another because they connect us to each other like threads, each with everyone else.

They are corrected with the help of 613 lights, which are called the “613 lights of the Torah.” And when I correct these 613 desires, they connect with the same 613 desires of another person. It turns out that we are all connected by 613 desires, threads, of each person with all the others, and one common network of mutual bestowal emerges.

My 613 desires recognize and understand the 613 desires in each person and in everyone together, and unite with all to bestow to everyone. And then all the light passes through me, all the fulfillment that I want to fill everyone else with!

The common light that is revealed in order to fill us all is called the Creator (Bo–Reh), that is, “come and see” how He clothes Himself in you.

So I have 613 uncorrected desires, and in order to correct them, I need 613 lights of correction, which are called the Torah, “the light that returns to the source.” And then the Creator clothes in these corrected desires of mine and reveals Himself in the connection between us.

It turns out that Israel (the corrected desires), the Torah (the light that corrected these desires) and the Creator, Who clothes in this entire system, unite into one whole.

Work In the Ten

938.02Question: Regarding the ten, is the reflected light our annulment toward the friends?

Answer: Yes, it all starts with that.

Question: How do we transmit the light in the ten?

Answer: Only in the ten can you transmit the light to each other. We study this through our work in the ten.

An Imaginary World We Cannot Do Without

423.03Question: What is the purpose of this whole complex material world if I eventually have to get to an inner point that is unrelated to the entire reality as I know it?

Answer: You are in the mold of the spiritual world to be able to enter spirituality from the outside.

Besides, the reality of our world precisely and optimally prepares you for entry into the spiritual world. Here you study, perform all kinds of actions and prepare yourself for the spiritual phase.

The spiritual stage is based on our reality, it is not completely detached from it. We are yet to see it firsthand. It is impossible to appreciate the importance of our world without looking at it from the outside.

We are not just dragging through our existence here. We will need many details of perception we have learned in this world in the spiritual world. Of course, they take a different form there, but nevertheless, they are needed.

Question: Can we say I have to go through material reality subconsciously, like a small child who is not yet aware of what is happening?

Answer: No, after all, with the help of this reality, you establish contact with other souls, connect and correct them, keeping connected with the rest of reality.

This world is very important. It allows you to make many corrections, therefore, it should not be underestimated. This outer shell does not disappear until the very end of correction. Only when everyone corrects themselves and unites, a special action will take place, as a result of which the material world will disappear from our senses.

Then we will call it imaginary. It turns out it never existed. It turns out that everything was happening in our imagination, and we had to live in this imaginary picture in order to build a spiritual world above it again and again.

Every spiritual action is based on this world. Even before the final ascent, you fall to the very bottom and become “Shimon from the market” who knows only his trade, football in the evenings, and nothing more.

Precisely from there do we ascend to the last degree. Imagine how important this deep, narrow gorge is, if only from there can you ascend to the top.

“Conversation” with the Light

232.06When a person begins to acquire the form of the light, the form of bestowal, he sees that the whole world, which seemed to him external, is in fact his own desires that he must reattach to himself with love. He discovers that they separated from him as a result of the breaking. And by re-attaching them, he reveals the qualities of bestowal within these desires, and then within them the Creator, the light.

And now he sees how the light plays with him, conducts a “dialog,” and awakens more strongly at times and less at other times. And the person, in accordance with this, must learn what the quality of bestowal is.

When one receives more light, one must give thanks for the Creator’s revelation. And when the light diminishes, you must give thanks that he has the opportunity to be in greater bestowal, and when you receives less than before, you should not lessen your gratitude and relate to the Creator with any change, regardless of how much light, clarity, or revelation you receive.

Through such ascents and descents, you begin to learn how to remain in bestowal regardless of the degree of light revealed within you. This is called: “thank for the bad as for the good.” And even more, you give thanks for being cast out of spirituality, for precisely “from such exits the Torah comes forth,” and through them you advance.

Egoistic desire grows and gives a person the sensation of being distanced from the Creator, i.e., the opportunity to draw closer to Him on one’s own. Instead of advancing by an increase of light, one can now advance by the growth of one’s desires to bestow.

Thus, a person reveals the upper light and is constantly “in conversation” with it, in various relationships, until one completely reveals one’s entire spiritual vessel.”

The Only Means of Advancement

630.2The main thing in spiritual work is constant care for the environment. The greater and broader it appears in my eyes, the more strongly I will strive to attach it to myself, to absorb it within me.

Each time, these external circles will enter me more and more, like rolling waves, until I cover the entire Malchut of infinity, meaning that I will perceive everyone as myself. This entire immense desire (Kli) will become mine, and within this unified desire the light, the Creator, will be revealed.

Everything depends on the intensity of the mutual work between a person and the environment, their influence on one another, and their mutual demand. By this, we determine the speed of our advancement. A person cannot advance by himself. The environment is the only means. Each time a person draws closer to it and rises with its help.

It is also necessary to fully realize the importance of the environment. After all, the entire structure of desire (Kli) originates from the division into an inner and an outer part, and all our discernments also take place between the inner and the outer, between a person and the environment.

So far we have not yet revealed this and cannot understand where exactly the correction of desires takes place. But when, with the help of the environment, we attract enough surrounding light and ascend to spirituality, we definitely feel that true spiritual work begins—between me and the environment.

Clarification and correction take place only there.
