“Therefore Shall A Man Leave His Father And His Mother, And Shall Cleave Unto His Wife”
Question: What is the meaning of the verse, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24)?
Answer: A mother symbolizes the female desire, the desire to receive, which is a deficiency of spirituality. And his wife symbolizes the next level of this desire. Later, a male becomes detached from his mother, like a little child, and adheres to a greater desire, which is called his wife. Therefore it is said, “in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice” (Genesis 21:12).
