Hanukkah—A Stop Before the Attack

933Question: Hanukkah symbolizes the boundary between the desert and the Land of Israel. Where exactly is Hanukkah located on the spiritual path?

Answer: Hanukkah is the quality of Bina, the level of Bina, whereas the Land of Israel is the quality of Keter, when Malchut connects with Keter. Therefore, Hanukkah is located halfway on the path to Keter, to the highest degree of connection, love, and adhesion with the Creator, and revelation of the Creator.

Hanukkah symbolizes only the revelation of a correct connection between us, but not yet a complete one. And therefore, it is merely a Hanaya, Hanu-ko, a stop along the way, on the boundary between the revelation of the Creator, attainment of the Creator, and adhesion with the Creator, which occurs at Purim.

The forty-year passage through the desert is an approach to the holiday of Hanukkah, rising above egoism. And afterward, there must be movement toward Purim.

Question: How does the further transition from Hanukkah occur?

Answer: When we fully master the quality of Bina and Malchut connects with it, it is entirely included in Bina. This state is called the small state (Katnut). After that, we begin to direct all of our desires toward the quality of bestowal and love; that is, not simply to work so as not to receive, but to fill others. This state is called Purim.

The ascent up to Hanukkah symbolizes “Do not do to another what you do not wish for yourself,” while “Love your neighbor as yourself” is already the entry into the Land of Israel (Purim).

Question: It is said that during the 40 years of wandering in the desert, the generation that lived in Egypt died out, and a new generation was born, which was meant to enter the Land of Israel. Who celebrates Hanukkah? The new generation?

Answer: Hanukkah is celebrated by the generation that was born in the desert. Because it is already detached from Malchut, from egoism.

The Formula for Reducing Suffering, Part 1

537All the suffering that is destined for us along the path of natural development must be revealed. We exist within a system and must recognize all our evil in order to correct it and come to good. But we can accelerate this process and transfer suffering to another level.

Therefore, Baal HaSulam writes that the premature revelation of The Book of Zohar brought about much suffering, yet at the same time it led to the fact that today the world stands on the threshold of redemption.

Hence, one must strive to move forward and shorten time, to transfer oneself and the entire world onto the path of light, the path of acceleration (Achishena). One should not wait for the time of blows to arrive, for them to be revealed from above, manifested in this world, and forcing us to correct ourselves. After all, we can accelerate our development on our own and move the blows onto another plane. And although we will still suffer, these will be completely different sufferings.

Instead of simply suffering on the animal level, we will suffer in a human way, that is, from the absence of taste in life and from not understanding it. These too are sufferings, which already torment many people today, lead them to depression, and sometimes even to suicide.

People try to drown out these sufferings with antidepressants or drugs. But these are suffering from the absence of a goal; they belong to the human level. Previously, sufferings were purely material and earthly: from lack of food, sex, family, money, honor, or knowledge.

Any dissemination of the method of Kabbalah advances the process of general development along the path of light. Sufferings do not disappear, but they become human: from lack of knowledge, understanding, purpose, which a person requires, and not only the animal body.

That is, the quality of suffering rises. The quantity of suffering multiplied by its quality determines the volume of the vessel in which the creation must reveal the entire light of infinity.

m (quantity) × h (quality) = V (perfect vessel)

If the quality of suffering increases, then its quantity decreases, and vice versa. It turns out that we have the opportunity to reduce the quantity of suffering by increasing its quality. But we are obliged to reach the required volume, the required intensity of suffering, in order for the vessel to be perfect. We all exist according to this formula.

For example, one minute of suffering from being distant from the Creator is worth a month of suffering from losing the lottery. In essence, suffering comes from a single source, but we can raise it to another level, to another “frequency range,” to another quality, and thus shorten its duration.

This is similar to how modern devices are able to instantly transmit enormous volumes of information on short waves, at high frequencies. In the past, when devices could not operate at such high frequencies, the same action required many long hours.

Suffering can push us from behind if we ourselves do not want to move forward, with things like having no money or nothing to eat, and one is forced to go and look for work. But if I am drawn by a goal that shines ahead, then I myself seek a source of strength that enables me to advance. This is a huge difference: feeingl material suffering or replacing it with goal-oriented suffering. A person is evaluated accordingly.

However, we are obliged to work through a certain intensity of suffering: quantity multiplied by quality. Therefore, by one path or another—natural development, acceleration of time, or alternately both—we are obliged to arrive at a perfect vessel (desire).

We Can Do Nothing without the Creator

236.01When you become completely disillusioned with your search for yourself, for life, for the purpose of life, and for the Creator, and so on, then you are approaching the point of finding Him.

Question: So this disillusionment has to happen?

Answer: Yes.

Comment: Meaning that I must put effort into the search.

My Response: Absolutely everything you possibly can.

Question: Should my efforts be based on the idea that I can do everything myself?

Answer: Yes. And after you realize that you yourself can do nothing, you begin to determine where is it possible to connect with the Creator.

Question: You said, “I can do nothing.” Do I really not have any ability at all? Nothing?

Answer: Nothing.

Question: Not even some simple things?

Answer: No, no! Until a person raises their hands completely, fully entrusting themselves to the higher force, nothing will work for them.

Question: Today, we see wars and crises approaching, more and more intense ecological disasters, and so on. Will all of this lead us to the understanding that we can do nothing?

Answer: That is a question. What we see today, I do not think will lead to that yet. Humanity still understands its state and its dependence very little. It believes it can still do something.

Question: So we must knock out this “chair” from under ourselves, i.e., the idea that I can do something?

Answer: Yes. We can do nothing without the Creator.

Create a Good Force in Yourself

281.02Question: If the soul is the quality of bestowal and love, then what does all these pieces of knowledge about the nature of the system of the spiritual worlds have to do with it? Are they conditions for the existence of the quality of bestowal?

Answer: The point is that our world is built on reception and hatred. The spiritual world is its complete opposite; it is built on the qualities of bestowal and love. If we replace our qualities from hatred and reception to bestowal and love, then we will begin to feel completely different phenomena and processes within ourselves. All of that will be called the upper world.

Comment: But some people do have certain altruistic impulses.

My Response: For the sake of what? For their own benefit. Then it is not goodness but self-interest. If it weren’t beneficial, a person would harm others.

Egoism (evil) is the fundamental nature of our world, and we must change it within ourselves. The world is me, and if I change myself, I will exist in another dimension. Right now, everything I perceive is inside me, inside my egoism.

Question: Where can one find a good force to balance the evil inclination?

Answer: If you truly want to acquire it, you must study Kabbalah. Then a good force will gradually form within you, and you will see that you suddenly acquire qualities that, by definition, could not exist in you, but you begin to receive them.

A Turbulent Period for Humanity

293Humanity has entered such a turbulent period that there is nothing left to do but hold on. And we must hold on to one another. In this way, humanity will be brought to unity and forced to understand that we live in a global world. This is not some kind of global politics; it is simply that we are compelled to unite.

Globalism is not about the fact that I must take everyone into account in order to pursue my own policy or somehow manipulate the world. Globalism is about understanding that this world is shared, and if I do not care about someone else, then ultimately, I do not care about myself. Even from the point of view of egoism, I am involuntarily obliged to include the entire world within the bounds of my benevolent self-interest.

Nature will force us to this. We will still see what will happen. Mainly these will be environmental problems. In addition, we have not yet finished with the economic crisis; everything is still ahead. No matter how much we try to cover it up, it will explode.

Comment: Egoism is so adaptive. After some time, a person gets used to everything and is no longer afraid.

My Response: No, egoism does not “get used to” things; it develops. A person does not get used to anything. This is a mistaken understanding of what is happening to people. They do not adapt; they simply carry out the commands of their egoism. They cannot return to the past.

If they actually returned to the past and we froze at a previous level, even with a new egoism, then that would be adaptation. But we do not adapt; we follow the dictates of egoism, we become different, change ourselves, our nature, our society, our relationships, everywhere and in everything.

So what are we supposedly getting used to? Families are falling apart. Children leave their parents. The entire former system of relationships is changing. The greatness of science, the greatness of culture—all of this is declining.

Humanity (and especially those in power, together with the mass media, no matter how much they try to gloss it over) is still undergoing a very stormy renewal of the world. We are not getting used to it.

You want to say that people still continue to act egoistically? That is correct. But this too is planned by nature in order to bring humanity, so to speak, to the edge. And there will be blows, strong blows. It is precisely these that gradually lead us to awareness.

The point is not to strike. The point is that small blows should provoke the development of thought, awareness, comprehension, and feelings: “Where are these from, for what, and why? What is required of me? Who requires it? Nature? Does it have its own authority, its own power, its own opinion, its own goal, its own plan? Am I obliged to respond to this? Am I obliged to take it into account? Me? Who am I? A human being! I am above everyone!”

No, you are small. Who are you? What can you do? Entire villages burn down. A couple of hurricanes will sweep through and knock out all the electricity, or rivers that have not yet dried up will overflow their banks. And then such cold will come that all the pipes will burst and people will freeze. What can you do?

You will start thinking and suddenly realize that it is truly necessary to somehow come to one another’s aid. You will no longer walk around with your nose in the air, as if to say that you do not care about the whole world.

In no way do I want to speak contemptuously about anyone. I am saying that the blows of nature will force us to be different. When a person is in pain, he becomes human. When a serious illness is suddenly discovered, there is no time for polite conversation; he is already thinking about how to survive. This is how nature, the Creator, forces us.

Comment: People unite only when there are misfortunes.

My Response: But there will be misfortunes all the time! That will not be a problem. From now on, it will only keep escalating.

Question: But everyone, first of all, saves their own skin, don’t they?

Answer: People will have nowhere to go; there will be nowhere to save themselves! Neither America, nor Russia, nor Europe will have anywhere to escape to. The Asians will join in as well. Just wait.

Comment: But surely there is some boundary a person eventually crosses.

My Response: Crosses to where? They will beat him down to the point where he wants to die and will not be able to.

They will not allow it! The higher governance will not allow it. Can you imagine how hard it can be?

And on the other hand, we must develop and spread Kabbalah so that people see there is salvation; there is a method for changing oneself. Then you immediately change your entire perception of nature.

The Creator, nature, no longer becomes hostile toward you. You begin to enter into unison, into harmony with Him, and you feel goodness, paradise instead of hell.

Effort Is the Reward

289One who works in the darkness without feeling any taste should understand that this is very beneficial for advancement because you are advancing toward bestowal to such an extent that you do not want other states, because the efforts are the reward if you have love for the one who creates these conditions for you.

You are given the opportunity to make efforts, and you do not feel any taste in this work, you have nothing with which to enliven your ego, the evil inclination, your pride, understanding, reason, and sensation, but precisely under these conditions, you have the opportunity to gather all your strength and with monstrous efforts advance at least in something. In bestowal without a reward.

The reward is the opportunity to come into contact with holiness in the darkness. Then it is clear that you have not been bribed by your desire for pleasure. Therefore, it is necessary to rejoice precisely in these states in which there is no taste at all. A person grows in them.

And here the support of the group is essential, the shared inspiration of the entire global Kabbalistic community. Such mutual support helps.

It is exactly when you do not receive it either from the Creator or from within (which also comes from Him), and you strive to receive support from the group, this is the best and most reliable guide toward the goal.

Specifically here is the point of making the correct efforts and the opportunity for a common prayer.

Make the Secret Obvious

527.09Question: In The Zohar lessons you explain very subtle, hidden, one might even say secret things.

Answer: They are secret and concealed from our senses because we are too coarse and unable to discern them. That is all!

This does not mean they are a mystery. They seem like a secret to me because they are concealed from me, imperceptible to me.

I have to sharpen my perception, make it more precise and capable of differentiating finer gradations of properties. Then I will suddenly start to sense a completely different, true depiction of reality, in a higher resolution.

For this to happen, we must introduce the property of bestowal into our perception. By sensing it, we will sense the upper world.
