Moses And The People

laitman_740_02The Lord spoke to Moses saying: “Stand aside from this congregation, and I shall consume them in an instant.” They fell on their faces. Moses said to Aaron, “Take the censer and put fire from the altar top into it and put incense. Then take it quickly to the congregation, and atone for them; for wrath has gone forth from the Lord, and the plague is begun.’” (Torah, “Numbers,” “Korach,” 17:9 – 17:11).

A person must get close to those desires and characteristics that are below him. He needs to make it possible for them to be filled with incense, meaning with Ohr Hozer (Reflected Light), and then he will become like the Creator on his level.

Question: Why was Moses so merciful to the people?

Answer: What else is there to correct if not the people? Moses and Aaron are corrected characteristics. But who are they without the people? For what purpose would they exist?! Moses is the characteristic of absolute bestowal, and without the people he is like a head without a body.

Question: How can Moses feel the people if he is completely divorced from them? How can he pray for them?

Answer: Joining the nation. It’s his job, not the work of the people. All of our desires, except for the head, are basically beastly desires, and only the head keeps them in the right intention.

The head joins itself to a certain amount of desires of the spiritual body and makes a calculation about them, which is called Zivug de Hakaa (coupling while striking). After that it begins to work with the desires, joining them to itself, and the body agrees and completely manifests what the head decides.

Question: Does it follow that Moses felt guilty about his detachment from the people?

Answer: This happens all the time. Every time new desires appear from below the head must find how to work with them.

Comment: And Moses didn’t blame them….

Answer: What could he blame them for?! After all, this is a broken Kli that became disconnected from Egypt because the cloud of the Creator covered it and brought the people out of there. So the body is not to blame at all here.

All of the desires that appear in man are discovered according to a strictly defined schedule, and the head needs to work with them, it is responsible for them. As to the physical desires, there are no restrictions.

Correcting The Desires Of Humanity

laitman_557The Torah, “Numbers,” 17:4 – 17:5: So Eleazar the Kohen took the copper censers which the fire victims had brought, and they hammered them out as an overlay for the altar, as a reminder for the children of Israel, so that no outsider, who is not of the seed of Aaron, shall approach to burn incense before the Lord, so as not to be like Korah and his company, as the Lord spoke regarding him through the hand of Moses.

Korach and his congregation are forces inside a person that express our internal attributes. Every person mentioned in the Torah reflects a certain unique attribute in a person’s general body.

The Torah, “Numbers,” 17:6 – 17:7: The following day, the entire congregation of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron saying, “You have killed the people of the Lord.” It came to pass while the congregation were assembled against Moses and Aaron, that they turned to the Tent of Meeting, and behold, the cloud had covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.

Everything that happens is necessary to bring about the revelation of the Creator. Even Korach’s rebellion and his seeming punishment, the concealment of that part in Malchut that cannot be on the level of Aaron, and the rebellion of the people are the revelation of all of the desires in our common body and their correction.

The congregation of the children of Israel, which means all of the uncorrected desires, tell Moses and Aaron, “You have killed the people of the Lord,” because this is how they feel themselves. It is because they compare themselves to Korach and his partners, while Moses and Aaron are very high moral principles to which our inner desires that are called the people simply cannot agree. This is actually how the correction of the desires takes place, and then the Creator is revealed.

Human Behavior

laitman_556Question: Is it possible to say that sooner or later a person will understand that “Korach,” “leprosy,” and all the other things that the Torah talks about are his internal characteristics?

Answer: It is unlikely that the masses can grasp this correctly, but individuals are capable of transforming themselves.

However, among the masses this happens much more simply because nature changes them and they don’t even feel that they have changed. How do they live normally? Today I think about something and yesterday I don’t even remember what I thought.

It is very difficult for an individual to elevate the masses because he has a unique relationship to them, a unique ego.

Question: Does this mean that we lack the individuals who can elevate the people?

Answer: No. The masses are absolutely managed and changed by those forces that are in them. They do not engage in the study process.

Individuals have states from the day before yesterday, yesterday, today, and tomorrow because concealed within them is a system of internal evaluation and clarification of what is happening. They constitute the head of the collective soul, so that they have thoughts, intentions, and directions that are coordinated with the Creator.

They are concerned about this and need to take everything into themselves, to absorb and agree with the process that is happening. After doing this, everything they understand, grasp, and acoordinate within themselves with the Creator specifically in comparison to the situation from yesterday, today, or tomorrow, all of this passes down to the masses, from the head to the body.

Whereas the masses don’t feel that they are changing: this is how we are, and that’s it. They have no understanding of yesterday, today, or tomorrow, the clarification of their inner states, of the evolutionary movement forward.

They don’t feel this, because they are on the level of the beast, and a beast, as we know, is just connected to that time and situation in which it exists, it has no problems.

A cow that is grazing in a pasture today is no different in any way from a cow that grazed in a pasture 500 years ago. Whereas regarding a human being who lived 500 years ago and a human being who is alive today, still there is a difference.

Nevertheless, the sensation of our human existence of 1,000 years ago has been lost; it doesn’t exist in us. The events that we went through are in us, but are concealed within the reincarnation of souls. Therefore the masses grasp everything completely naturally, without comparing anything: “This is how I am thinking now.”

The difference between the masses and the head part, the Adam, is that the Adam seemingly wanders through the entire axis of time: what interests him is also paleontology, zoology, biology, the wisdom of Kabbalah, the future, and everything else.

Question: So if the head part feels that what is said in the Torah is happening within him, what about the masses?

Answer: The masses will accept all of this naturally. Suddenly completely different attitudes towards each other will be created: “Bestowal? Why not? I see that this is useful and necessary, which is to say, this is how we should live.” They don’t work with the ego. These thoughts and emotions simply lodge in their hearts and minds and they carry them out.

Comment: Happy people….

Answer: The happiest object in the world is a stone; it doesn’t need anything; it just lies there on the road. After all, the one who “increases knowledge, increases sorrow” (Ecclesiastes 1:18).

The Blossoming Of Aaron’s Staff

Dr. Michael LaitmanTorah “Numbers,” Chapter 17: 21 – 17:23: Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and all their chieftains gave him a staff for each chieftain according to their fathers’ houses, [a total of] twelve staffs, and Aaron’s staff was amidst their staffs. Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the Tent of the Testimony. And on the following day Moses came to the Tent of Testimony, and behold, Aaron’s staff for the house of Levi had blossomed! It gave forth blossoms, sprouted buds, and produced ripe almonds.

Twelve staffs stand for twelve parts of the common soul (four stages of three lines). So, Aaron’s staff is above the others.

Dry staffs symbolize unpromising routes of advancement and a budding staff symbolizes the path that leads to life. Therefore, all should aspire to follow Aaron and pick up their staffs under the condition that they follow him.

The common soul consists of 12 major internal properties called the tribes. Everything is built on a symbiosis, a mutual connection among them.

Twelve tribes can be connected with each other only if they are tied to Aaron of the house of Levi. This is why the Torah directs us who to follow.

Only Aaron can serve as a connection of opposite qualities. The tribe of Levi never did anything for their own sake, they work only in bestowal and the education of the people. Therefore, people advance in accordance with the degree of the self-correction that is possible as a result of the Levites’ governance and teaching.

The entire Torah speaks about faith above reason, which is a state of complete self-annulment. When we approach the revelation of the Creator, we naturally arrive at the complete annihilation of selfishness. Enlightenment is the understanding that our egoism is not us. This makes it easier on us.

Being In Harmony With Nature

laitman_763_3The Torah, “Exodus,” 32:33 – 32:34: And the Lord said to Moses: “Whoever has sinned against Me, him I will erase from My book!” And now go, lead the people to [the place] of which I have spoken to you. Behold My angel will go before you. But on the day I make an accounting [of sins upon them], I will bring their sin to account against them.”

Question: What is the meaning of: “I will bring their sin to account against them?”

Answer: The nation is not corrected yet, so all of its heavy egoistic attributes, where the strongest sparks are, ascend from the bottom of the ego. Because, when there is receiving for one’s self, the most egoistic desires draw the greatest Light, the greatest pleasure, and it is recorded there.

The expression, “I will bring their sin to account against them,” refers directly to our times. Now, when the era of the last generation (the generation of the correction) begins, all the greatest, ugliest, most terrible egoistic attributes are revealed.

What is more, humanity will justify them and accept them so naturally that it will not understand why anything should be corrected at all! Why? What for? It will be very difficult for us to understand that this is actually what stands in our way. This is, of course, a great problem that will rise in the future.

Humanity will sink into eternal chaos, totally unjustified wars, and terrible afflictions. All of the most unnatural deviations will become the norm. It is the revelation of the ego on the level of “dog-eat-dog.”

However, we can reach this period with the recognition of our nature. If we draw the upper Light unto us, which will affect it, we will begin to feel how evil it is and will begin to correct it since it will be unbearable to exist in these attributes.

But we should realize in what sense we have not satiated nature’s desire and why it is putting such great pressure us. Only by gathering ourselves correctly into an integral society will we be able to integrate with nature in harmony and cease to be so opposite from it.

Aaron’s Light

Laitman_509The Torah, “Numbers,” Chapter 17:12 – 17:13: Aaron took [it], just as Moses had said, and he ran into the midst of the assembly, and behold, the plague had begun among the people. He placed the incense on it and atoned for the people. He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague ceased.

Question: What does “Aaron stood between the dead and the living” mean?

Answer: It’s the line to which Aaron transmits the Light of Bina onto the people. In this way Aaron protects those who are inside its Light; others are not protected. With this boundary, he does not give them the opportunity to get closer to the Light.

What does “the plague ceased” mean? Where the Light of Aaron is present, the Light of Hochma dressed in the Light of Hassadim also dwells; this condition allows people to gradually transition to unity.

Those who are below this level do not retain the internal light, the Light of Hassadim, in which the Light of Hochma dresses, and that’s why they clearly see that they don’t have the right to even come in contact with what is happening with Aaron. Thus, “the plague ceases” since these desires do not participate in the general movement.

They stop aspiring upward because Aaron stands between “the dead and the living,” i.e., draws the border (Parsa) between them. Corrupt desires understand that they cannot connect with the Creator. They are dead for connection.

This is how a Partzuf’s border is drawn in the place of the Tabur, the place where the common soul splits in two parts: the one capable of connecting with the Creator (the part where He manifests Himself through) and the other part that the Light is unable to enter.

Space For A Priest

laitman_276_03Torah, “Numbers,” 18:20: The Lord said to Aaron, “You shall not inherit in their land, and you shall have no portion among them. I am your inheritance and portion among the children of Israel.”

A priest is a property of pure bestowal within a person and within a society.

In the corporeal world priests always received a part from taxes collected from the people. A priest’s entire life was devoted to serving in the Temple, education, and governing the Levites, whereas the Levites’ task was educating the entire nation.

Thus a multi-step structure was created: priests, Levites, Israel. In this way they served one another. Corporeality was ascending from bottom up; spirituality was descending from above down. Similarly, everything is organized within a person, in his soul, and in his people.

It is said, “I am your inheritance and portion among the children of Israel.” This is why the property of bestowal is the only space where a priest exists.

Covering For The Alter

laitman_232_06The Torah, “Numbers,” 17:3: Even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar—for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD–that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.

Because the fire-pans (the vessels) were not used according to what they were designed for, which means with the intention of in order to bestow, they have to be made into something that is completely different, into a covering that hides these desires, these sins and transgressions, which didn’t allow the people to be in complete bestowal unto the Creator because they were all hidden by the earth.

The Creator’s punishment is always very simple. I stand before the Creator wishing to perform an action that is aimed only at love and bestowal, but at the moment, revealed in the ideological platform of daily desires and thoughts.

It turns out that it doesn’t match the level I hoped and expected to reach in my ascent. Then the earth swallows me (“earth – Eretz” stems from the Hebrew word “Ratzon – desire”), i.e., the true desires that are revealed in me now. Then it is clear where the Creator is and where I am.

It says that the fire-pans “were offered before the Lord,” which means that the actual actions were good, but the intentions were corrupt. This is the reason that the holy fire-pans are made into beaten plates that become a covering that doesn’t allow the pleasure to enter the ego.

Fire-Pans For Offering Incense

laitman_276_01The Torah, “Numbers,” 17:1 – 17:2: And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: “Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy; …

Fire-pans for offering incense symbolize the vessel in which we want to resemble the Creator, to act with the intention of in order to bestow, and to mutually bestow unto Him.

Although the Torah speaks about desires, every spiritual action is expressed in our world in the form of corporeal objects. Therefore the depiction of the fire-pans they used to offer incense in the Temple were kept until our very days.

This means that people used to work that way with their desires, from which the Returning Light rose, meaning that they pleased the Creator and brought Him pleasure.

When a person works with the intention of in order to bestow, he resembles the Creator and thus becomes closer to Him and can adhere to Him. He ascends from Malchut to Bina and then from Bina to Keter; this is what the rising incense symbolizes.

When The Grave Becomes Paradise

laitman_207Torah, Numbers 16:31 – 16:35: As soon as he finished speaking all these words, the earth beneath them split open. The earth beneath them opened its mouth and swallowed them and their houses, and all the men who were with Korah and all the property. They, and all they possessed, descended alive into the grave; the earth covered them up, and they were lost to the assembly.

All Israel who were around them fled from their cries, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up [too]!” A fire came forth from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who had offered up the incense.

Question: What does “descended alive into the grave” mean?

Answer: If you are completely within your egoistic desires, you clearly feel the contradiction between these desires and the Creator, and this burns you like fire. You feel shame, nothingness, the absolute oppositeness, and you do not know what to do with these desires, so they burn you. This is called hell. After all, the grave, hell, is a shame.

Therefore, “descended alive into the grave” means to feel intense shame, but this is a gradual correction.

Desires and characteristics constantly appear that we are ashamed of. However, what happens on the physical level is not connected at all to what the Torah is talking about. Spiritual shame is the worst thing. It is truly hell.

Question: It says, “All Israel who were around them fled from their cries, for they said, ‘Lest the earth swallow us up [too]!’” What are these desires?

Answer: All of the rest of the characteristics of the person feel how he now is going through a state of purification and benefit from this unique empowerment and elevation.

The fire of shame affects and influences everything on all sides because this a single integral system within us. It follows that spiritual shame is the essence. He created Malchut, Tzimtzum Aleph (the first restriction), and the entire system, which is based only on the feeling of shame.

The underworld has seven compartments, and the deepest of them is called Sheol. Those wicked people fell specifically into Sheol.

According to the desire of the Creator, the ground gave way deep underground so that the destructive influence of Sheol would not destroy the world.

This speaks about the maximum distance between Moses and Korach. But then there is a correction and nothing remains inside. Sheol itself becomes Gan Eden (Garden of Eden – paradise)! After all, in fact, evil does not exist.

All enemies are those who yearn for the Creator. Therefore, Sheol becomes Gan Eden, just as Mount Sinai becomes a sacred mountain, and all of its hatred, magnified 625 times, becomes a sacred mountain on whose summit—where previously there had been the most negative and egoistic accumulation that can possibly exist in nature—the person encounters the Creator.
