“Withdraw From The Dwelling Of Korach”

laitman_276_02The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:23 – 16:25: The Lord spoke to Moses saying, “Speak to the congregation saying, ‘withdraw from the dwelling of Korach, Dathan and Abiram.'” Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

The Creator seemingly calls the congregation and says: Leave Korach and Abiram alone! Now you are the ones who can participate in the correction of the new level and not they! They have to die on this level, which means to refrain from using and fulfilling it, while we will proceed. This phenomenon happens many times in life especially among the people when the moment of mercy doesn’t work if they go against the major principles. But Korach has no other choice. It is an egoistic desire that wishes to be corrected, while Moses is detached from him because he is an absolutely pure level.

This is how we are shown that there are levels on which putting the desires to death is their complete correction. Only then are they born and can ascend because their Masach (screen) belongs to pure Bina. The correction of Korach is already the next level: Bina plus Malchut that operate with the intention of in order to bestow. Therefore, when Korach begins to correct himself, he will rise to an even higher level than Moses. Moses operates only until the borders of the land of Israel and then it is already the next level.

Nullifying Our Egoistic Desires

laitman_281_02The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:26: And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: “Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.”

Moses calls on society to not be in their existing desires because they cannot be corrected according to the principle that Korach suggests. Only death is the correction for them now. When they are dead, these desires will not interfere with the nation’s attempts to be corrected and will not pull the nation backward. They simply will be nullified, and they will not feel them.

Therefore, the virus of the egoistic desires shouldn’t even come near the congregation, because after the great desires to receive  that want to be corrected with the intention of in order to bestow, there can come smaller attributes, which means hundreds of thousands of people.

The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:27 – 16:30: “So they got them up from the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. And Moses said: ‘Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind. If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the Lord hath not sent Me. But if the Lord make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the Lord.'”

At that moment, there is the revelation of the ego under the influence of the Upper Light. The Light reveals that the attributes which Korach wanted to correct cannot be corrected: this is what you want to correct and what happens with your attributes, an upper level influences you, but you are not corrected with regard to it, and so the earth swallows them, which means that the Light that operates on that level kills you.

Question: Why does Moses say to the people: “If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the Lord hath not sent Me. But if the Lord make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the Lord.”?

Answer: Because Moses is the upper attribute. When the Light influences the people, it reveals their ego, its finiteness, its defeat, not on the animal level but on the level of the correction of the soul. On the whole, the Torah doesn’t speak about corporeal bodies but only uses allegorical comparisons.

In Search Of Correction

Laitman_931-01The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:20 – 16:22: The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron saying, “Dissociate yourselves from this congregation, and I will consume them in an instant.” They fell on their faces and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, if one man sins, shall You be angry with the whole congregation?”

When opposing attributes like Moses and Korach rebel in a person, then there is not just a desire to cancel them for a while because then they will still need to be corrected, but the desire to find out how they can be corrected today.

As they appear opposite, unfit for use with the intention for the sake of bestowal and love, the question arises: Is it really possible to do something with them, without having to kill them?

Moses is the attribute in a person that regrets that now so many egoistic desires, which could soon be corrected, will die, but they are thrown back, and he remains with his pure attribute, the attribute of Bina (Intelligence). But what is the need for it if it’s not connected with Malchut (Kingdom), which needs correction?

On the one hand, it’s good that we reveal the contradictions between these attributes and the inability to use them at present. However, on the other hand, they are thrown very strongly to the back! Is it possible to correct them somehow?

The attribute of Moses within us wants to actualize the correction as fast as possible. And we really can do it! If we connect now in a special request and call to the Creator, then this MAN (Mayin Nukvin, female waters), will raise the Reshimot (reminiscences), and there will be a possibility that we may correct ourselves in some way. In principle, the prayer, meaning the right desire, corrects everything.

But on the other hand, even if it doesn’t work out, the search itself, the attempt to persuade the Creator to correct these attributes, constitutes an effective act through which much can be corrected.

As The People, So Is Their Leader

laitman_281_02Question: In spirituality, Moses is the head and the people are the body. Why is the role of Moses to join the people to him. And if we are talking about a true leader, this is hard work, full of pain, blood and tears.

Answer: In an egoistic world, everything happens completely differently. A leader prefers control and money. And the movement toward the goal seems different.

Read the Book of Psalms by King David in which he praises the Creator or writes about his own insignificance. This is an absolutely different approach.

King David was engaged morning to evening only with the correction of his people and pulling them closer to bestowal and love. He was the central organizer of the people as a unified altruistic whole. His role was to consolidate the entire mass into a single family.

This is a job for all ministers of all government systems, the concern for how to manage an immense mass of the people so they eventually would become closer and feel themselves as one complete whole.

He had the responsibility of facing the upper force, the Creator. What inner tension, what intense internal discipline, to dedicate every moment in life to this without letting go?! It is incredible. This was very demanding, serious work on himself.

After all, here it is necessary to take account of everything: how you sleep, eat, dress, speak, what you do, and where your mind is at every moment. And it should all be only in a constant state of ascent, like a clock ticking, another second, more and more, and it must be ticking always.

If we were ask a person from our world if he would be ready to be a leader like this, he would answer, “No, this is such a lofty duty. I could not even get close to it.”

So, in the past, the leaders in Israel or a prophet were appointed by the Creator; i.e., they were at a level where nothing belonged to them.

But today everything is turned upside down: corruption and greed, just to build a villa or get some island for yourself. In this way, the Creator is showing the people that everything is over; we need to work on ourselves because the leaders who sprout up from the masses today cannot be otherwise.

It follows that the public are the ones who must take on a serious obligation of moral transformation. Otherwise, there will be no results, and the future leaders will be much worse than the present ones.

Remembering the leaders of fifty years ago, we would say they were idealists. To us, that is how it seems it was then. But in fact, they held the same egoistic ideals. But then, the principle, “It is good to die for our country,” prevailed, whereas today only calculations prevail and the rest doesn’t matter.

Now people are beginning to gradually understand that they are in an ideological dead end and they must do something. Even though we have changed who the puppets in government, the police, and the judicial system are , they always will always be the most egoistic and corrupt.

So, the people must change themselves. This  is the only way we can the whole environment that is completely outdated.

The Correction Of Korach And His Congregation

laitman_602_01The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:18 – 16:19: And they took every man his fire-pan, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.

“And the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation” refers to a spiritual ascent. When a person raises MAN (prayer) and wants to be fully connected with the attribute of love and bestowal only, it is called offering incense, which symbolizes the ascent of our desires upward.

The attributes of Korach and Moses and the 250 desires that accompany them ascend upward in MAN to the next level.

This next level is the Creator with respect to the previous level of the created being. In it it is revealed whether Moses or Korach was right. The choice is made by the help of the Upper Light, the upper attribute that is revealed on that level.

Moses, Korach, and all the 250 people of his congregation totally nullify themselves, which means that all these attributes are incorporated in the next level where the solution to the problem—which of these two attributes is closer to the current level is found—and how one can ascend to it.

Then the attribute of Din (judgment) is revealed, which kills Korach and his congregation. This is their correction! All the other attributes quietly disperse to their places and then continue to advance.

Moses Or Korach?

laitman_546_02The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:15 – 16:17: Moses was exceedingly distressed, and he said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken a donkey from a single one of them, and I have not harmed a single one of them.” Moses said to Korah, “You and your entire congregation should be before the Lord you, they, and Aaron tomorrow.

Let each man take his censer and place incense upon it, and let each man present his censer before the Lord; [there will thus be] two hundred and fifty censers, and let you and Aaron each [take] his censer.

On the one hand, Moses says to the Creator, no matter what they bring, “do not accept their offering” because he realizes that one needs the attribute of pure Bina, of bestowal, in order to reach the border of the land of Israel.

When Malchut (the egoistic desires) are incorporated in Bina, even if there is a covenant between them, there is still the state where these desire rebel and demand what is theirs.

Therefore, now, he wants to check his personal attributes and to what extent they really work with the intention of in order to bestow, to what extent their incense rises upward full of the special scent of love and bestowal, or whether there are burning coals left in it that want to swallow and burn everything.

Offering incense is an attribute of MAN (prayer), a test before the Creator as to whether the MAN rises to the upper level and merges with it since the upper level is always called the Creator.

If it does, the people advance, which means that they offer their method of ascent and accordingly can enter the land of Israel directly, despite that the Creator said that they would wander in the desert for forty years and die in the desert.

However, when the offering of the incense is fulfilled, it becomes clear that the egoistic desires still exist in the people and that they sink and are lost in them. Therefore, in order to check what we are really guided by, whether it is by the ego or by bestowal, we must offer our incense to the Creator.

Question: Is this how Moses examines himself?

Answer: Of course! Moses is our most sublime attribute, but Korach and all of those who rebel against Moses are egoistic desires that tell him, you are following the wrong way! We should advance only by our altruistic desire.

This is the reason that we examine these desires inside us. If I believe that they are right (the left line), Moses in me falls, and if on the other hand, they appear as absolute egoistic desires, Moses in me rises again.

This happens because I fully raise all my attributes to the next level, which is called offering incense. The next level shows me either the attribute of Moses or the attribute of Korach, and which of them is more valuable than the other in helping me ascend.

This is where the egoistic and the altruistic components of the next level appear, what is the covenant between them and who will rule, Moses or Korach.

Different Attributes: Moses And Korach

Laitman_076Korach is the leader of the attribute of criticism in a person who believes that it is possible to perform spiritual actions of correction and to ascend to the level that is equal to the Creator, which means to enter the land of Israel, to a state in which a person discovers the upper force of nature and is in contact with it, in adhesion.

The attribute of Korach in us believes that it is possible to attain this state in an easier and shorter way than Moses proposes, without afflictions and without many problems, without the terrible suffering and death in the desert.

But the nation is facing 40 years of serious work of getting closer to one another. There is no doubt that they will die during this time, and they are doomed to suffer during the whole 40 years and then die at the end near the border of the land of Israel.

But Korach still claims that it is possible to skip this level. He is a great man who understands everything and being in his attribute, he sees (and he believes that what he sees is true) that Moses is wrong, just as he has mislead the spies. What’s next?!

It is very hard to express yourself. You should either reach the highest state now, called the land of Israel, and attain the attribute of bestowal, the end of correction, mutual love with the Creator, as the whole upper world is revealed before you and you can operate there according to the spiritual laws or you must die because of your incompatibility with the upper world.

Why is it impossible to correct this incompatibility? If the spies had decided to enter the land of Israel no matter what, everything would have been okay. The people would have followed them and they would have easily overcome all the obstacles without any wars. War is necessary only in order to beat us and to raise us to the next level, to reveal our readiness and nothing more than that.

Korach believes that as a leader Moses is responsible for everything. From his perspective Moses hasn’t prepared the people correctly and so the children of Israel can follow a different way.

This problem has no solution because the attribute of Malchut (Korach) and the attribute of Bina (Moses) are opposite from one another and cannot be integrated. Although Korach is a great man and is on a level close to Moses, these attributes are very different.

Eternal Soul

Laitman_509The Torah, “Numbers,” 15:30 – 15:31: But if a person should act highhandedly, whether he is a native born or a proselyte, he is blaspheming the Lord, and that soul shall be cut off from among its people. For he has scorned the word of the Lord and violated His commandment; that soul shall be utterly cut off for its iniquity is upon it.

Question: What does “that soul shall be utterly cut off” mean?

Answer: It is impossible to cut the soul off, for after all, this is the discovery of the characteristic of bestowal, love, the Light, in a person. If we make our egoistic desire similar to the Light, the upper force, then this characteristic of bestowal and love begins to perceive the Upper Light, be filled with it to the degree of equivalence with each other, and this is called a soul. In this manner, we connect ourselves with the Creator, with the Light.

Our main function is to gather all of our separate internal desires, intentions, thoughts, and feelings together under one solitary intention of bestowal and love outside of ourselves. And then to the degree that at any given moment they will be joined and connected within us, we create within us an object called the Creator and we feel Him within us. The characteristic of love and bestowal that this person can create within himself is the Creator.

Question: So why is it said that if, “a person should act highhandedly… shall be utterly cut off for his iniquity is upon it”?

Answer: If a person was on a spiritual height or he had the possibility of rising to this height, but he does the opposite, then he falls, descends from this height. It follows that the previous soul is apparently cut off and he must produce it anew, but already on another, greater level. So the descent is necessary.

In every stage you must fall from the previous level and rise to a higher level. When we read in the Torah, we see how the people made mistakes all the time. The question may be asked, couldn’t they learn anything?! But they must commit sins; they must discover the poisons of their ego within them again and again, then correct them and rise even higher upward. Along with this, they must be happy about their descent! As it is said, “A Tzaddik (righteous) will fall a thousand times and get up” (see Proverbs 24:16). This is our way.

Return Or Die?

laitman_747_01The Torah, “Numbers,” 16:12 – 16:14: And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said: “We will not come up. Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?”

“Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”

None of a person’s attributes in his current form are ready to ascend to the level of the land of Israel, to complete love and bestowal. How can the people relate to Moses after the Creator says that those who work that way will die, regardless of the level they are on?!

This is the reason that the children of Israel are angry and complain: “Why have you brought us to this state? You are leading us forward, which means that you are responsible for everything.”

Now they know only one thing: when a certain day in the year called the Ninth of Av arrives, everyone digs himself a grave and lies in it and spends the whole day in it. No one knows in advance who is going to die, but every year 15,000 people die this way.

Thus there is an accurate demand here: I have to ascend above myself, to hold on to the next level where I will already be different and dead in my current attributes, and take on a different attribute, a new one, the attribute of bestowal.

The dead are those who cannot detach themselves from their previous state and therefore when the ascent begins, some are left behind and others rise, cover the graves, and keep on going. This means that they are not egoistic enough, and have not reached the level on which they can die and need to develop onward.

Comment: Does this mean that they will also die eventually?

Answer: They must! It is predetermined. They know they are doomed because it is impossible to live with these attributes, but the next generation will enter the attribute of complete bestowal and unity with the Creator.

The next generation is the transformation of the current generation, its next life. And so they live for it, and grow in it.

Question: Dathan and Abiram say: “We have come out of Egypt, which is a land flowing with milk and honey and we should have come to another land, which is also flowing with milk and honey,” what are these levels?

Answer: The children of Israel come out of Egypt not because they suffered there physically. Corporeal Egypt offered them everything, which means that the ego provided them with absolutely everything.

Now, however, they are in the desert, in the attribute of bestowal, and they receive the manna (MAN) from Heaven. This means that they live only on raising their prayers in order to be corrected and to be only in thoughts about bestowing unto others and caring about them. It is in such thoughts that the people feel the force of vitality and can breathe and advance.

Question: But still, they find Egypt attractive, what bribes them?

Answer: Goshen is the best land in Egypt, so why should they go ahead. It is better to go back! Pharaoh will receive them with open arms and embraces and will give them back this land that is also a land flowing with milk and honey. Pharaoh never shuts the door behind him, and this attracts them back.

Doubts Are A Place For Advancement

Laitman_003.jpgComment: If we look at the Torah superficially, it seems that it is only talking about murders, suffering, and struggle between good and evil, and I hear that you are constantly justifying all the rebels: Miriam with Aaron, Korach with Israel.

Answer: These characteristics are constantly rising up within us. On the way towards correction, the discovery of all kinds of egoistic characteristics happens to a greater or lesser degree.

But still they are in conflict between them to awaken a greater resemblance and equivalence with the Creator, to attract greater desires and greater intensity of ascent.

After all, ascent happens both according to the characteristic of the egoistic desire, the “left line,” and according to the altruistic characteristic, the “right line.” So it is necessary to clarify how to ascend in the “middle line” so that we attract the most from the two lines with a connection between them.

Where is this right connection between them found? There are a lot of subtleties here. We study this in the book The Tree of Life by the Ari and, in part, in the book Talmud Eser Sefirot (The Study of the Ten Sefirot) by Baal HaSulam.

But in general, this is a very complex multilevel system, and so there is room for constant doubts. They appear in us intentionally because specifically at the time of these doubts, we have a need to ascend even further above the characteristic to receive to the characteristic of bestowal.

Every doubt makes it possible for a person to resolve it with the help of an ascent above it. So, all of the characters of the Torah are with contradictions and clarifications, since only in this manner is it possible to rise to the level of the Creator.

The entire system consists of ascending above the doubts: I don’t know how to behave, what to do. I ask my egoistic desires, my intellect, my feelings, all of my experience, to weigh all the “pros” and “cons.” Everything is seemingly played out on the stage of a theater. Ultimately, escape happens through an ascent above myself. And this is the advancement.

So we must unite by shutting our eyes; only in this way is it possible to survive and advance forward.

Of course this is not felt immediately because when desires like these arise in me, like Korach and his faction, then I am in a very great internal fragmentation.

It seems to me that I am right. And so only the tiniest characteristic that is left in me, which I discover at a critical moment and can use, raises me to a greater height.

Comment: It is interesting that it is specifically the great Tzadikim (righteous) that commit “sins,” but in the good sense of the word. An example of this is the leaders of the twelve tribes who entered into the land of Israel and saw giants there.

Answer: Only the highest characteristics give us complex situations like these. And after that the ground swallows them or they are stoned or burned; what and how is not important.

This is talking only about the correction of egoism. After all, there are four levels of density of the ego, accordingly there are four methods of its “execution.”
