Resisting Egoism

566.02And the Lord said to Joshua, “Be not afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall cripple their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.” (Prophets, Joshua 11:6)

This means: do not give the egoistic desires the opportunity to approach you. If you cannot deal with them, take up the defensive and do everything to deprive them of the means to fight you.

A big problem arises because these desires are so powerful that you can hardly resist fulfilling them. And the Creator is weak here. The problem is that we ourselves understand that we have to resist them.

Comment: But in this case, the Israelis were strong. They broke the chariots, i.e., hit egoism.

My Response: Yes, but egoism works in many directions and with great cunningness. Victory after victory, it is good. But why later are people suffering defeat, and moreover, a huge, general defeat? Because egoism is our nature.

And although it seems to us that we are winning, the victory, in general, is purely external. And in order to really lead the people to unity with each other and with the Creator, it is necessary to fight with the Creator Himself, who arranges all this, both weakens and strengthens. As it is said about Jacob: “You fought with the kings and fought with the Creator and won.”

To conquer means to force the Creator to help you recreate yourself. After constant effort, when you realize that you have no strength, this is a natural move.

Question: It turns out that neither kings nor Israel have any freewill? Those are heated up and these are heated up.

Answer: No, Israel has freewill so that it constantly strengthens its unity against egoism and understands that it cannot do anything—only to ask the Creator.

To Harden The Hearts Of Kings

232.01Prophets, Joshua 11:18-11:20: Joshua made war a long time with all these kings. There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; they took all in battle.

For it was from the Lord to harden their hearts, (that they should come) against Israel in battle, that they might destroy them completely, and that they might have no favor, that they might destroy them as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Comment: The Creator hardens the hearts of kings—that is, egoistic desires—for war and says to Israel: “I have weakened them, go and take them.”

My Response: This is about our inner desires which we must cover with the intention “for the sake of the Creator” and transform from reception into bestowal. Yet not by our actions but by our intentions. That is the whole problem. With intentions, you do not know how much work you still have to do and whether you are doing it correctly because you must act completely on your own. And when the Creator indicates against whom to act there is no choice.

Question: But at the same time, the Creator also points to egoistic desires: “Stand up, fight against Israel!” He confronts me with my desires. And this is called help?

Answer: The Creator’s help is in that you are defeated. In the state of descent you discover your weakness, complete powerlessness, and you can ask. You must not defeat anyone except your egoism! Therefore, all the work is aimed at weakening your ego.

Your “I” is the intention: what you want to achieve! And your nature is the egoistic desire. And that is why such a duality awakens in you all the time.

Question: And what is not mine in me?

Answer: The intention to give, to love, to connect with others. Something that sometimes awakens in you and subconsciously does not give you peace. This is not yours; it is the help of the Creator from above.

Question: And I ask for this to come?

Answer: Yes, although you do not ask for it yourself. The Creator awakens this request in you and provides all possible assistance. And help can be “for” and “against.”

In this case, the help is “against” when egoistic desires are heated up and they say: “Go to Israel!” This is the same as when the Creator said to Moses: “Come unto Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart.” That is, “I have warmed him up against you. So, he is ready. But I am with you, don’t worry, go!”

Far And Near

232.01Prophets, Yeshua, 9:9, 9:11: And they said to him, “From a very distant land have your servants come, because of the Name of the Lord your God, for we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt.”

And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go towards them, and say to them, ‘We are your servants; and now make a covenant with us.’

After the capture of the cities of Jericho and Ai, everyone began to fear the Israelites, and the kings who were nearby gathered together to fight the Israelites.

And only the inhabitants of Gibeon acted cunningly. They pretended to be poor people who came from afar, and Joshua entered into an alliance with them that he would not touch them. Therefore, when he entered the city of Gibeon, he did not destroy it.

And then ordinary Israelis murmured: “Why didn’t we destroy this city?” To which they received the answer: “We have entered into an alliance with them.” That is, they mistakenly determined that these desires, their intentions are not hostile.

Question: Why if someone comes from afar they are not to be touched? What do you mean by near and far?

Answer: Near and far are determined not by distance but by ideology, by the anti-egoistic higher desire. The ideology of the Israelis is drawing together and worshiping one God, one power, the property of bestowal and love—“love your neighbor as yourself.”

All other kinds of forces, and there are a great many of them, are egoistic. Naturally, they are opposite to altruistic desires, they cannot be corrected, and they must be destroyed. First and foremost, the closest ones.

And the fact that the Israelis were mistaken and did not destroy the inhabitants of Gibeon who deceived them is only because they entered into a treaty with them. This is sacred: you promised, you must fulfill it. And although the inhabitants of Gibeon achieved this by deception, they thereby protected themselves from destruction.

“Put Your Feet Upon The Necks Of These Kings”.

540And it was when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon their necks.

And Joshua said to them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage, for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom you fight. (Joshua 10:24-10-25)

“Putting your feet upon the necks of these kings” means mastering these desires for the sake of bestowal, for the sake of serving the Creator. This means that you put yourself above others because you can control egoistic desires, and this is not easy. In this way you conquer the egoistic steps.

Question: Is this close to what Kabbalah says that the upper extends his part down to the lower?

Answer: No, there we are talking about cooperation in order to raise the lower one to the next level, and here it is about suppressing egoistic desires.

There are four types of mortification of egoism, which depend on the level of egoistic desire, and each of the four levels needs to be corrected.

According To One’s Qualities

509And he brought near the family of Judah; and He took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites near man by man; and Zabdi was taken.

And he brought his household near man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

And Joshua said to Achan, My son, give, I pray you, glory to the Lord, God of Israel, and make confession to Him; and tell me now what you have done; do not hide anything from me.

And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus have I done.

When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. (Prophets, Joshua, 7:17 – 7:21)

Question: They found all of this in the tent of Achan so they seized all his possessions, cattle, tent, sons, and daughters and took them to the valley of Achor. What is Achan’s fault that he should be executed now?

Answer: There is no fault. A person acts according to his qualities. That is, not now when he has to decide how to act, but much earlier when he was given the opportunity to prepare and to be in connection with these, and not with those people, to study something, try to understand and embrace the laws. Then he still had a chance to prepare himself correctly for observing the commandments. However, now it is no longer possible.

When the Creator says: “Do this, and do not do that,” it is already clear that the period of preparation is over and now a person will act according to the qualities that are speaking within him.

Teaching People To Be Holy

37And Joshua said, Why have you troubled us? The Lord shall trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, [after] they [had] stoned them with stones.

And they raised over him a great heap of stones to this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore, the name of that place was called, The Valley of Achor, to this day. (Prophets, Joshua 7:25 – 26)

Question: Does it mean that the Creator is very jealous?

Answer: No, this is not jealousy, but a desire to bring humanity to complete correction. Therefore, He must conduct all these so-called trials, that is, to teach the people to actually be holy and, to rise to the level of the Creator.

Question: Is it correct to deduce from this the law that one who takes the prohibited will be executed?

Answer: Each level has its own qualities that are suitable for the action of the correction exactly at this level. You need to clearly perform them, otherwise you will not rise to the next degree.

If nothing else grows from your current level, then you will be destroyed also at that level.

Getting Out Of The Fire Alive

112Question: It is said in the Torah that Abraham was thrown into the fire of a red-hot furnace. When his father saw that he came out of the fire alive, he agreed to go with him. What does it mean?

Answer: The fact is that Abraham and his father Terah made statues out of clay, burned them in a furnace, and then sold them.

To come out of the furnace healthy and unharmed means to come out strengthened in the quality of bestowal and love. Therefore, Abraham was able to leave Babylon, i.e., all that was in it in egoistic growth and enmity.

The furnace is an internal analysis when you do not know what to do: everything is burning in you, and you do not understand where to go and what to do. This is resistance to your past, present, and future, which you do not understand. Such a burning, as the fire of hell, the unknown, the lack of understanding of the causes and consequences of what is happening, this is the furnace.

A quality is extracted from the fire, with which you can advance. It was from the past quality, which is called Terah, that a new quality, called Abraham, came out. It is no longer Abram, but Abraham, the germ of the soul.

“Remove Your Shoe”

740.01Prophets, Joshua, 5:13: And the captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, Remove your shoe from your foot; for the place upon which you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.

Question: Why take off your shoes?

Answer: Shoes are what separates a person from the earth, which symbolizes desire. All one’s desires should be uncovered to analyze, separate, sort, and correct them. By taking your shoes off, you begin to come into contact with the next egoistic level and can begin to correct it. This is a constant, never-ceasing work.

Comment: It would seem that once he enters the land of Israel—he is there.

My Response: There is no such thing as “he is there.” Every moment consists of many spiritual operations.

“They Took Them Down Off The Trees And Cast Them Into The Cave”

284.07Prophets, Joshua, 10:27: And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

Question: Once the kings were strangled, Joshua commanded them to hang them on five trees and leave them there until evening. By sunset, they removed them, cast them into the cave in which they were hiding, and laid large stones at the entrance to the cave.

Why did they hang them on the trees after they had already killed them?

Answer: The tree is the Tree of Life, which represents the spiritual laws of nature. A person, at the moment some kind of a king, represents a certain egoism that is hung on a tree. This is its correction.

There is no question about any revenge or any other calculations. It only says that egoism, when it is corrected in this way, is attached to the general Tree of Life and enters into the system of correction. Therefore, all the “kings” (egoistic desires) are eventually corrected and connected to the general system in the correct form.

Laying stones at the entrance of the cave so that this will never happen again symbolizes the final correction. It is no longer possible to work with buried desires since they have already been corrected.

It is written that this burial was left “unto this very day,” which means, until the end of days. At the end of days, it will become clear that all this was only a correction.

Question: Still, what does “unto this very day” mean? Is it in order for us to see this?

Answer: In order for us to understand by what they are guided. These are not years or millennia, but degrees. On our degrees, we too should be guided by this.

“Until You Remove The Accursed Thing From Among You”

547.06Prophets, Joshua 7:11-7:12: Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them; and they have also taken of the consecrated thing, and have also stolen, and also dissembled, and they have also put into their vessels.

And the children of Israel shall not be able to stand before their enemies; they will turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore, if you do not destroy the consecrated thing from among you.

“They have also taken of the consecrated thing.” That is, they took all kinds of jewelry, vessels, and valuables, which symbolize uncorrected desires. Therefore, the Creator says: “I will not be with you anymore.”

Question: Does the whole world practically lives off the accursed?

Answer: This all exists inside us. We must clearly separate one from the other in order to work only with the properties of bestowal. This will gradually happen. You just need to know that this is how it should be and wait for it to happen.

Arise, prepare the people, and say, Prepare yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you will not be able to stand before your enemies, until you remove the accursed thing from among you.

And it shall be, he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has; because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, because he has wrought an infamous deed in Israel. (Prophets, Joshua 7:13, 7:15)

Question: Why are the children of Israel constantly given such severe punishments?

Answer: These are not severe punishments. Everything happens in accordance with what is inside them. If a serious egoistic property awakened in them that they still could not reject and they kept it inside despite the prohibition, then now they must somehow uproot it from themselves, bite into the heart, and squeeze it out of there.
