What Does The Torah Tell Us

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 1:9: …but its innards and its legs, he shall wash with water. Then the Cohen shall cause to [go up in] smoke all [of the animal] on the altar, as a burnt-offering, a fire offering, [with] a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

A pleasing fragrance to the Lord are the parts of our corporeal desire that we cannot use for the sake of the Creator. We raise them to the next level in the form of fire and smoke as if we burn them. At the same time, we don’t enjoy them but delight the Creator. The word “fragrance” refers to the attribute of Ruach.

All the desires that were previously used egoistically have to become kosher, which means to be worthy of bestowal in order to use them for the benefit of others. So there is no such matter in our world (matter is a desire on the level of the still, vegetative, animate, and speaking nature) that can be used directly for bestowal without being changed by certain actions first.

The whole Torah speaks only about this. So bringing offerings, the Tabernacle, the Holy Ark (where the Torah is kept), the curtains, the Menorah, and all the other objects symbolize a person’s inner attributes.

The Torah describes how these objects are prepared, of what they are made, who should prepare them, and in what conditions. For example, during the construction of the Temple, cedars of Lebanon were used. They brought copper from a certain place and from another they brought wool from special sheep. All this indicates that a person has to choose these parts of his desires and use them in this particular way as he corrects them in order to bestow.

There Is No Creator Without Man, And There Is No Man Without The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 1:3-1:4: If his sacrifice is a burnt-offering from cattle, an unblemished male he shall bring it. He shall bring it willingly to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord…and it will be accepted…

“Be accepted” refers to the decision a person comes to by examining which of his desires is perfectly ready to work with in order to bestow upon others without any self-benefit. A person has to examine all his desires, no matter what level they are on, rate them, and determine on what level he can bring an offering and on what level he cannot.

This is very precise work, during which we attain our inner nature with regard to the Creator and see that we can resemble Him to some extent but only on a certain level, and everything else in us is the animal that we have to sacrifice.

Thus, we determine our level, and by working with the anti-egoistic Masachim (screens), we build the spiritual ladder inside us. By that we learn the whole scheme and work actively on resembling and becoming like the Creator. To the extent that we can resemble the Creator, we can seemingly replace Him, so that man is left and there is no Creator

Question: I am always scared when you say “man is left and there is no Creator,” because we always mean that He exists and that the world is advancing towards Him.

Answer: No. We speak only about what we attain. If we don’t feel Him now, does He exist or not?

The main problem is that there are certain axioms, starting points, that have been inserted into us from birth, which we simply have to burn inside us. One of them is the existence of the Creator because this declaration implies that we already have some contact with Him and don’t need to build, to determine, and to sculpt this essence!

There is no Creator without man and there is no man without the Creator! This is why the Creator is called Bo-re (come and see). If we don’t come and don’t see, He doesn’t exist.

Instructions That Come From Inside

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In all religions, people believe that we should act according to the Creator’s orders.

Answer: Kabbalah doesn’t take any orders into account but only a person’s possibilities according to his level of development. It’s because every desire, every intention, the whole plan of creation, is meant only for that, for developing a person so that he will discover and create the image that he can call the Creator inside him.

He creates it each time as he rises higher and he regards the Creator that he creates as more and more sublime. But this is a very complicated issue that I wouldn’t recommend discussing with ordinary people since this perception is established in a person only when he feels the new spiritual elements, feelings, sensations, and discernments.

Question: So instead of instructions, there are yearnings and efforts that develop in a person which oblige him to advance?

Answer: We feel the instructions from inside us. What is an instruction? Where is an instruction given? Who carries out these instructions if they are written somewhere? All this doesn’t exist! No one carries them out! If according to a person’s nature something is egoistically beneficial, he does it, and if it cannot be carried out egoistically, he doesn’t since he cannot force himself. “Cannot,” means unable to, “doesn’t want to” because he isn’t made for that, there is no difference between wants and performs.

If people don’t engage in their nature, and don’t take it as the basis that needs to be changed and how to format it anew, they think “the Creator has instructed us and we shall do as He says.” But in fact we cannot change ourselves. Try! We see that nothing changes, but simply continues to deteriorate and becomes worse.

Thus there cannot be any orders here. If a person feels a certain inner awakening and to that extent begins to burn inside, he then works in order to fulfill his awakening.

Suddenly he discovers a certain new goal and that he has to perform certain actions in order to attain it. At the same time he learns the orders written in the books and tries to perform them, but it won’t help! If his desires are different, there is no need for any books. We see what happens in all the religions.

The fulfilled actions are only inside a person and only according to the parameters that accumulate inside him, that connect and manage him. It’s foolish to think that I can change myself according to someone’s orders. If it were possible, it would mean that I am simply programmed and that I am a zombie, that I have read a certain instruction like a machine and changed it inside me. Then I am simply disconnected from my analytic instrument and am programmed.

I cease to be a human being and am just an animal in their hands, since a human being is someone who gradually clarifies everything that happens to him with the help of his freewill and his analytic instrument and comes to conclusions that are beyond the limits of his nature. He begins to realize that there is a narrow bridge to the other nature, to another creation to another world. This is where the wisdom of Kabbalah begins. This narrow bridge is bringing offerings, changing my desires from egoistic intentions to altruistic intentions.

“But He That Trusts In The Lord, Mercy Compasses Him About”

Dr. Michael LaitmanPsalms, 32; 10-11: Many are the sorrows of the wicked; but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy compasseth him about. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous; and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

If a person opens his vessel, he begins to feel that everything has already been prepared for him from Above and that everything has been prepared with mercy in advance. The only thing a person lacks is to detach from his desire to receive, and if not to detach from it, at least to detach from what depends on it. This is also prepared from Above.

Then a person attains adhesion with the Creator, as it says: “but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy compasseth him about.”

Grinding The Ego To Bestowal

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does the millstones of the system that grind the grains of the ego in the spiritual correction symbolize?

Answer: It’s a very complicated system that processes and corrects our desires. What is more, all this takes place inside a person. The shells of the grains or the husk is the external egoistic wrapping from which we have to totally detach ourselves and spread to the wind.

It protects us for a while, like it protects all of humanity today, gradually bringing us to a state in which we begin to feel that the ego is bad. This disturbs us in many aspects of life. It’s time to correct it and to start treating ourselves and life differently. We have to send the ego into the air, which means that we have to change its form.

First we choose the grains, when we understand that these are our egoistic attributes, and then we beat them and thus clean them of the husks, and take the grains out of the stalks. These are all internal processes that a person goes through.

Then the husks are carried by the wind and only the clean crop is left in the granary, and then we begin to process the grain, which means to grind it. Grinding is a process of recognition of the desire, which has already lost its egoistic wrapping. But how and with what should we do it? A person’s thirty-two teeth also symbolizes the actions of grinding, since when we chew food it becomes usable for eating.

But the most important thing for us are the millstones. By grinding our desire, we begin to understand what it is made of. Then we add water to it, which means to the desire to receive that is now clean of the intention for itself, and we add the intention for the sake of others, for love of others, and through them, for the Creator. This is called making bread, and if we operate this way, our desires become food that makes a person grow.

Through The Purifying Fire

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Bread is baked in fire. What does this phase symbolize in the spiritual correction?

Answer: After having reached the right combination between the desire to receive and the intention of in order to bestow, I insert it into the attribute of Din (judgment), the attribute of fire, the attribute of the tough and right correction, the proper use, and so it is put through fire. Many corrections in the Bible that are described as being put through fire symbolize purification.

Fire is the feeling of Din, the purification of the ego that remains. The ego has to cook, to warm up, to burn, and only the part that remains is ready to be food for humans. This is one of the main methods of correction.

We must purify our desire from the ego, so that it will remain without an intention for ourselves, and to add to it an intention of for the sake of others, love, and mutual connection with others. If it’s in the right form, it’s put through fire or through other hard trials, and in this process, the desire with the intention of in order to bestow is stabilized, which means that the bread is baked.

Our Success Is Thanks To The Creator’s Help

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: I have to go through the process of the wisdom of connection before starting to work with my ego. What happens if I try to work in order to bestow without going through this process?

Answer: It’s impossible; you cannot do it. The only thing required of a person is to yearn to go forward. He discovers that he cannot do anything by himself and that he isn’t his own boss. The changes occur only by drawing the Upper Light and only in the connection with the Creator. This is given to him not so he will be a hero, transcend himself or subdue and conquer all of creation, all of reality, and dominate it.

Conversely, all this is needed so that a person will feel that he needs the Creator’s help and so that he will adhere to Him. The ultimate goal of creation is adhesion, the connection of a person to the Creator when he is fully dressed into the Creator and the Creator fills him.

So you will not achieve anything by a personal victory. Our victory is in not being distracted but in the constant asking and demanding of His participation, His solution. Therefore our work is called God’s work. All this should be logically explained to people.

Sacrificing The Ego For The Sake Of Bestowal

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Offering a sacrifice was discovered after the consecutive entrances of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into Egypt.

Answer: Offering sacrifices was also common in Egypt to some extent, but in a totally different way; Abraham, for example was told: “Offer Isaac as sacrifice.”

After the exodus from Egypt, there were direct instructions to come to the Creator, to build the Tabernacle, to post the priests, etc. This became a movement of a nation that did not exist in Egypt.

Therefore, we can understand how the Hebrew custom of offering sacrifices of animals that they slaughtered was hated to the Egyptians. It is because the ego sees how it is being destroyed and sacrificed in order to acquire the opposite, most hated attribute, the property of love and bestowal.

The ego cannot bear any form of sacrifice, and is against it, but cannot do anything about it.

Question: Certain counties have banned the kosher slaughtering of animals.

Answer: We often encounter this phenomenon since the normal ordinary ego doesn’t understand that offering a kosher sacrifice, even on the corporeal level, is the most humane and merciful way, because in that case, the animal doesn’t feel that it is dead. In fact, it symbolizes correction.

Searching For The Brothers

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom Rabash, Article “Love of Friends”: “And the man asked him, saying: ‘What are you seeking?’” meaning, “How can I help you?” “And he said: ‘I seek my brethren.’” By being together with my brothers, that is, by being in a group where there is love of friends, I will be able to mount the trail that leads to the house of God.

“And the man said: ‘They are departed hence.’” And Rashi interpreted that they had departed themselves from the brotherhood, meaning they do not want to bond with you. This, in the end, caused Israel’s exile in Egypt. And to be redeemed from Egypt, we must take it upon ourselves to enter a group that wants to be in love of friends, and by that we will be rewarded with exodus from Egypt and the reception of the Torah.

We need to understand everything written in the Torah in its authentic, spiritual sense. It’s not important what happened with its actual characters since bodies are of no significance. The matter of the creation is a desire that was deliberately broken into many pieces. We have to find by what forces, programs, demands, impacts, adjustments, and actions it is possible to connect all the pieces back into one desire.

We need to look only at our desires and search for how connect them together. Everyone wants something different because otherwise we would be united in one desire. But because we are different, we can only connect above the desires in intention by mutual support.

We have to sense our friends’ desires, needs, expectations, and goals and help them attain their objectives to the best of our ability. We should help our friends implement their desires; this is the only way unity can be achieved.

Although none of us is like the other and each is quite different, but all of us strive to help the other. And so we suddenly, we see that by rising above our desires with the intention to help one another, we connect. Unity does not take place in desires; it happens in the intention. Thus, we build a new vessel of intention that is above our desires. It is like the head (Rosh) of a Partzuf.

When we realize that this work is not in the corporeal bodies or inside our desires, but solely in the intentions, then we begin to feel the need for friends. That’s why the following is written in the Torah about Joseph: “‘I seek my brethren.” In this case, they become vital for us.

If our aspiration is correct, we are granted unity. Previously, we never thought we could attain unity, nor had we ever strived for it until the property named “Yosef” manifested in us. This property collects (Osef) all our intentions. At this time, we are acting with the help of this force called Yosef (Joseph) that acts between us.

We elevate Joseph above everything else; we extend it beyond our egoism and let it govern our nature; in other words, his reign is put over us by appointing him Pharaoh’s (the desire to receive) first assistant. The will to receive is our nature, and Joseph stands above it controlling this desire and reigns over all of this desire, all of Egypt.

At this point, we are able to work correctly with our desire to receive pleasure. This period is called the seven years of satiation. This is the full measure that can possibly reveal our unity under Joseph’s leadership.

After that, a higher step called Jacob descends to Egypt (i.e. enters the will to receive) because it starts acquiring a structure that connects all the brothers, all kinds of desires, together. This is how a vessel called Joseph is built above the desires.

Since we continue workings with the will to receive at the higher levels, seven years of hunger arrive, the poor cities Pitom and Ramses are constructed. It becomes clear to us that it’s impossible to attain unity within an incomplete desire. And then comes the period of famine, the inability to use the will to receive to feed it without keeping it under the screen, under the governance of the power of bestowal.

After acquiring and working with the small force of desire (Aviut), it becomes possible. When Aviut increases, i.e., a new king who never knew Joseph rises in Egypt, this work becomes impossible again since a bigger will to receive is revealed as a result of shattering. The property of Joseph vanishes, and a new stage called Moses appears, to continue the process of correction.

All is centered around collecting the fragments of desires back together. But inside them grows a force that is opposite to the will to receive, the intention to bestow, as assistance by the rule of contraries. Each time we decide what is more important for us, thus we advance to the point of realizing how essential the Higher Force that controls us is. Then, we rise above our desire to receive pleasure and gather at Mount Sinai.

Under The Domination Of The Force Of Mercy

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, (Leviticus) “VaYikra,”1:4: He shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering, that it may be acceptable in his behalf, in expiation for him.

Hesed, the right hand, should be above all our thoughts and feelings because bestowal, love, and compassion are above everything. On the whole, Hesed (mercy) is regarded as a weakness in our world. If someone loves me so much that he always feels merciful towards me, I begin to take advantage of it egoistically, and very soon begin to “sit on his head.”

But in the spiritual world, it is the opposite. Mercy (Hesed) is the greatest, most sublime attribute. The whole spiritual world is founded on it.

A person who attains this attribute brings all his desires and intentions (“head” is the intention) to the level of above reason. He works in faith above reason and aims his intentions only for bestowal.

Thus, the Torah tells us that the Creator puts His hand on the head of the burnt offering as if He gives it an intention. This means that all the thoughts and desires, the mind and the heart, are dominated by a new force that has been given by Him, the force of mercy.
