Studying TES

256Question: When we study “Preface to the Science of Kabbalah (Pticha)” or TES (The Study of the Ten Sefirot), I have the feeling as if someone is explaining something from another galaxy. I do not understand where this is inside me. I listen as friends ask questions, as if they are revealing all this within themselves. What can I do to begin to perceive it at least a little in this way?

Answer: Here, I can give only one piece of advice. We are speaking about the spreading of the light in the Kli, in the desire.

Imagine that the light is acting upon you—a desire to fill, to delight, to bestow everything. You reveal it with the intention to receive, and gradually the light enters you and builds within you the corresponding degrees.

In principle, this is the whole science of Kabbalah.

A Circle and a Line in Spirituality

532Question: When I hear the words “circle,” “line,” or “Sefira,” images of this world appear in my mind. How should I correctly picture and feel what a circle or a line is?

Answer: These are different ways that the light spreads. A circle is the spreading of light without any limitations, while a Kav (line) is with limitations.

Question: Can we attain anything other than the Kav, for example, the Igul (circle)?

Answer: No, we can attain only the line (Kav), but within it, we attain everything that is necessary. The Creator reveals Himself precisely in this way.

Don’t Create “Idols” for Yourself

567When we read Kabbalistic articles, we must be very careful not to attach them to concepts of time and space and create “idols” for ourselves. Everything written by Kabbalists relates only to our desire, not to any historical events that occurred in the past.

History also relates to our inner perception of reality. There is no geographical location in which all this occurs; “place” is our desire. And there is no time; “time” signifies a change of states.

And when we read such a special article as today’s: “And They Built the Cities of Affliction,” about slave labor for Pharaoh, we must relate everything described only to ourselves, to what happens to us on our spiritual path.

It speaks of what I must go through in my desire, in my relationship with myself, with the group, with the Creator; it speaks of all the means given to me to achieve union with the upper power. There is nothing else but me and Him. And everything else is merely a means to achieving fusion between us.

Everything written in the article must occur only within me, within my soul; that is how I must understand it. And then I will truly study the inner meaning of the material.

Bestowal Is Not Coercion

210Therefore, once all the members of the nation agreed, they were immediately given the Torah, for now they were capable of observing it. But before they grew into a complete nation, and certainly during the time of the fathers, who were unique in the land, they were not truly qualified to observe the Torah in its desirable form, since with a small number of people it is impossible to even begin with engagement in Mitzvot between man and man to the extent of “Love your friend as yourself,” …. This is why they were not given the Torah (Baal HaSulam, “Matan Torah [The Giving of the Torah]”).

A distinction must be made between the Torah of the forefathers and the Torah of the era of Egyptian exile. In Egypt egoism grew to the degree of Pharaoh, and it had to be corrected by the light that returns to the source. But the desires revealed in the times of the forefathers were very pure and did not require this light.

Even afterward, for almost a thousand years until the era of the sages of the Talmud, one had to humble one’s desires through asceticism and labor in the Torah. Only thanks to the corrections carried out by the sages of the Talmud is it sufficient for us to engage in joint study, which brings the light that returns to the source (the reforming light).

In any case, the form of correction of the forefathers differed from ours. In the present stage of development, we must attain love for one’s neighbor as for oneself, and from this it is clear how the Torah, that is, the Kabbalistic method, must be applied. At the end of the Preface to The Book of Zohar, Baal HaSulam explains that first of all it must be realized within the people of Israel, and afterward—in the entire world.

The application of the Kabbalistic method is possible among a great number of people who support one another and become guarantors for one another. Each is obliged to care for everyone else, and then a person has no worries about himself. For even his basic needs he receives because others care for him. As a result, a person completely disconnects from his egoistic desire and performs a restriction upon it.

This restriction is not based on forceful methods, not on self-coercion. It does not mean restraining myself from eating a tasty piece of cake. That would be a diet, not a restriction. What we are speaking of is the action of the light, which raises in my eyes, bestowal above reception, and then I simply cannot receive anything egoistically. Within me there remains the desire to receive, but above it reigns the desire to bestow.

Questions about Spiritual Work—258

281.02Question: Baal HaSulam introduces the concept of “the force of the circle” in TES (The Study of the Ten Sefirot). What is it?

Answer: For a complete action, the desire of creation must be included in the desire of the Creator. But this does not happen so quickly. They need to become acquainted with each other through a common Kli, through the surrounding light, and so on.

Question: When I listen to TES, a great desire awakens in me to understand it. How far is what we imagine we understand from the truth? What is the meaning of our actions?

Answer: The meaning of our actions is that we should want to be like a corrected Kli, that is, to receive in the Kav exactly in proportion to the measure of that Kli.

Everything Depends on the Desire

177.06Question: In previous lessons, I heard that everything spoken of in Kabbalah takes place in a line (Kav). Can we say that a circle (Igul) is what exists in potential in Ein Sof, while the Kav is what enters my perception?

Answer: We cannot feel what takes place in Ein Sof. We can feel only what happens in our Kli, in our desires.

Question: Then what is the relationship between the Kav and what happens in my Kli?

Answer: It is the same thing.

Question: On what does it depend, what exactly from Ein Sof enters the Kav?

Answer: It depends on your desire.

548.03Question: What is this state of creation when there are three components: Igulim (circles), Kav (line), and Tzinor (pipe)?

Answer: These are elements that exist in the spiritual world to coordinate the actions of the Sefirot or Partzufim.

Question: Which arose first, Igulim or Kav?

Answer: The Igulim arose first, and after the restriction that creation undergoes, the Kav appears, which is a line connecting the elements of creation.

The Whole World Inside Desire

712.03What is a “place”? The will to receive in the emanated being is the “place” for all the abundance and the light in it (Baal HaSulam, Study of the Ten Sefirot, Vol. 1, Part 1 “Table of Questions for the Meaning of the Words”).

There is nothing but desire, without any boundaries. We depict it in diagrams as a circle, a square, a triangle, spreading from above from the Creator or from below from the creation. But this is only a convention we adopt in order to illustrate that part of the desire that is fit for correction, for receiving the light.

In the original desire created, there are no boundaries. It ends nowhere. All of creation is desire; without desire, there is no concept of “place.” Place is created by desire.

Therefore, the matter concerns only the correction of place, and according to the measure of correction, this place is divided into circles (Igulim), straight lines (Kav Yosher), or other forms. But the desire itself is boundless, like Malchut of the world of infinity.

Thus, in spiritual work it is of extraordinary importance to constantly relate to creation as to the place of desire, that is, to strive to view everything from the proper angle and from the perspective of correction.

If I see that everything is only “place,” that is, desire, then at all levels of reality—still, vegetative, animate, human—I will look only at desire. And these desires are mine, but my ego paints them as external, not belonging to me. Work on the ego consists precisely in gathering, in reuniting these desires with myself.

In this way I collect from these parts the “place” for the revelation of the Creator and of the whole upper reality. It is revealed within me, and apart from me there is nothing. All perception of reality depends entirely on this concept: place.

What is the place of this world? A spark that burst forth from the upper world downward, into properties lower than it, more deficient, and created the place of this world. That is, it generated a desire within which our world exists.

What determines the boundaries of this world? Only desire! It is very difficult to explain in relation to our three-dimensional space and the boundaries of the universe. There is a “place” where the universe is located, and what fills it—the content of that place. But all of this pertains only to desire. One must completely detach from the “geometrical” perception of the world, and then it becomes much easier not to get confused and to perceive in essence what appears before us.

The only thing we need is to correct our desire. All of reality is within us, in our sensation, and apart from us there is no other “place.” Place is our desire!

Is Our Reality Really Objective?

703.03Question: How is it that there is supposedly an objective reality in our world with external objects that we can measure?

Answer: We are accustomed to living by perceiving the picture of reality in an inanimate desire to enjoy, and we think the same way about spirituality, that it exists by itself and does not depend on changes inside us.

This happens until we begin to feel the relativity of our perception, and understand that it depends on our qualities.

Gradually humanity is advancing toward the realization that the entire vision of the world depends on the qualities of the observer. In quantum physics, scientists say that the results of an experiment also depend on the observer. But we have no means of measuring the effect of thought on matter.

In general, everything gradually becomes elusive until we decide that all of this is relative, relative to the qualities of man. Everything depends not on whether I observe or not, whether I think or not, but on who this person is who thinks and observes, what his qualities are.

Then we move from ordinary science, which does not depend on the qualities of the scientist, to the researcher, who must first of all take care of his own qualities, and only afterward investigate matter. This is already a Kabbalist.

The Dead-End, the Creator, and the Meaning of Life

628.1There is no dead-end in nature. The dead-end that it sets for us are only for us to rise above, overcome this barrier, and develop further.

Dead-ends are only at our level, like steps. How does a small child climb stairs? He crawls with difficulty on all fours, and so on. That is why we are given these disappointments, ascents, and so on. They make us grow.

Question: So human growth occurs precisely by overcoming these dead-ends by sensing them?

Answer: By sensing them? A person cannot get up; one crawls up!

Question: So should I feel that there is a dead-end?

Answer: Yes, you must understand that the obstacles before you are the steps of the ladder of ascent.

Question: So where am I going? Here is this ladder. Where do I go, from one dead-end to another?

Answer: Toward understanding the meaning of life. Toward attaining the meaning of life.

Question: What is it? I am ascending toward something. Why am I climbing from one dead-end to the next?

Answer: I ascend so that these steps of ascent will create such desires, properties, and qualities in me through which I could reveal the meaning of life. It is there! But I do not see it, I do not feel it, I cannot  formulate or sense it.

As a result of these ascents, when I crawl from step to step like a small child on all fours, trying to climb, I develop the mind and senses within myself to understand the meaning of this ascent. And suddenly, I begin to understand, as if this meaning is located between the steps.

Question: Is there an end to these steps?

Answer: It is very far away. It is almost not even there. But why? If I start to feel this is life. This is life, when at every step you have disappointment, the need to find strength, the need to find the exact aspiration, the goal. Otherwise, you will not have the strength: what for, how, why, what will you consider the right goal, the right decision or not, etc….

That is, as a result of climbing these steps, you begin to feel yourself growing, creating.

Question: What is it that drives me? Is it to get through this dead-end or to get closer to something?

Answer: No, you no longer even want to reach any final step. You begin to feel pleasure in going through them. Between the steps, you begin to feel the wisdom and clarity of these steps.

Question: Am I starting to feel this governance?

Answer: This is called “Mi Maaseha Ikarnucha“—”From Your actions will I know You.” From the steps themselves, from how they were created for you, and at the same time you were created in order to rise above them—from all this, you begin to attain the Creator of these steps. And this is the main thing.
