From Receiving the Torah to Building the Temple

laitman_767.1When the sons of Israel agree not to use their big and burning ego, and through actions performed on egoism in order to neutralize its hindrances they begin to unite and reach the state of mutual guarantee (Arvut), this guarantee comes after actions, and is called “we will do and we will hear.”

This is when they receive a connecting and filling force from above called the Torah. With the help of this force, they begin to gradually correct the vessel itself with the Aviut degree of one.

This is called going out into the Sinai desert and raising Malchut to Bina for 40 years, correcting it, until 40 years later, they come to the land of Israel, that is, to Malchut united with Bina.

This is the land of Israel (Eretz Israel), the desire straight to the Creator (Yashar El, Israel). This is when they get awarded with the state where they build the Temple.

This means that they have a Kli that can truly contain the upper light within itself, that is, a vessel where the Creator is revealed.

Why Did the Concept of “Mutual Guarantee” Disappear

511.01During the period of the First Temple, the leaders of the people were prophets, individuals who were in close connection with the Creator on a very special level.

The entire nation was in contact with the Creator, but the prophets were connected to Him in a unique, revealed way, corresponding to their Aviut (spiritual coarseness). They attained much more than what the Aviut developing and being corrected in the people at that time allowed.

But when the nation returned from Babylon, a different period began, called the period of the sages. There were no longer any prophecies, but there was a different connection with the upper, on the level of Mochin deNeshama (mind of the soul), yet the mutual guarantee within the nation was no longer all-encompassing. Part of the people were in mutual guarantee with one another and therefore in attainment of the upper, while another part of the nation no longer was.

This lasted until the time of the Second Temple, until even that declined and reached the level of unfounded hatred. The desire to receive had grown so much in people that they were no longer able to carry out the necessary corrections, and so the law of mutual guarantee simply ceased to exist.

The Second Temple was destroyed, and on the material level, the flaw that had arisen between souls was revealed, and the nation went into exile.

Exile is a special state in which it is impossible in practice even to carry out or desire mutual guarantee. The very concept that one must be a guarantor for another became concealed, and this idea seemed to disappear.

The Unshakable Principle of Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)

937The greater our will to receive grows, the stronger Arvut (mutual guarantee) must become. We can see this reflected in the course of history.

Upon the exodus from Egypt, when we absorbed an added degree of Aviut, we had to accept the first level of Arvut, known as the “standing at the foot of Mount Sinai as one man with one heart.” It was through this unity that we merited the Torah.

Later it was necessary to expand the collective participation and mutual guarantee, which expressed itself in the journey through the desert, in the division of the people into tribes, and in their respective roles as Cohens, Levites, and Israelites.

When one studies the method, it becomes clear that all of this is essentially a continuous process of correcting the same principle called Arvut, the connection into a single Kli in a corrected form where each connects with the others according to the root of their soul.

When the people reached the stage of building the Temple, they were already required to realize their connection within a country.

That is, although the internal conditions of each individual and of the people as a whole changed, the desire to receive burned ever more fiercely and kept growing, affecting also the external conditions (the people entered the Land of Israel, fought other nations, and settled in the land). Arvut had to continuously take on new forms. Yet the core idea remained unchanged: to be guarantors for one another.

Mutual Guarantee—The General Law of the Universe

929All of Israel are guarantors for each other. Guarantors for each other is our state when we are in Adam HaRishon, in a common soul. The state we initially existed in is a perfect state, created like this from above, and we must come to it ourselves, from below, from this world.

From the state called the soul of Adam HaRishon (the First Man), which is united with the Creator in perfection, eternity, in complete similarity to the Creator, all laws descend to us. And we, who are at the lowest level, the furthest from this state, must gradually implement, fulfill, and apply these laws to ourselves, and thus advance and return to the same state.

Thus, mutual guarantee (Arvut) is a common law that must exist between us if we want to come to correction, a state called “one soul,” from which this law, like all other laws, or “advice” for our corrections, comes to us.

When Will the Third Temple Be Built?

944Question: When will the Third Temple be built? After all, the first and second temples were built. There was some movement toward love for one’s neighbor. So why was the 9th of Av necessary, and why were these temples destroyed?

Answer: It was so that we would begin to correct them. The construction came from above. We were given a force that somehow united us.

Question: So were the two temples built from above?

Answer: Of course! The force comes from above, it does not come from us.

But for the Third Temple we must become aware of how much we need it and demand it ourselves, from below.

Question: Will the Third Temple be built by the whole world?

Answer: It will be built in the hearts of those who strive toward the Creator. They are called the people of Israel. This is no longer about people supposedly defined by having a Jewish mother and father, by birth, or by passport. It is about those who yearn for the Creator. Then this process will be taken up by the whole world.

Comment: Does it mean that “Israel” is not today’s Jews or Israelis, those living in Israel, or Jews by birth, but those who strive toward the Creator?

My Response: Yes. In essence, those who strive toward the Creator are called “Israel,” and they are obligated to reach unity and spread it to the whole world.

Egyptian Slavery Today?

944Question: On the first evening of the Passover holiday, it is customary to hold a special meal at which the Passover Haggadah is read, which is the telling of the Jews’ escape from Egyptian slavery. Is this story a simple historical narrative or does it have a deeper meaning that applies to today?

Answer: The Egyptian exile dates back to the age of the forefathers, followed by the age of the sons. The patriarch Abraham began to gather disciples from all over Ancient Babylon. He taught that it is impossible to advance and come closer while everyone is in such internecine strife and selfishness, as it happened then in Babylon.

The construction of the Tower of Babel symbolized the ultimate form of selfishness that had grown to the heavens. The whole of Babylon was torn apart by mutual hatred and misunderstanding, which is called “the confusion of languages.”

Abraham told his students that there is a single method for all mankind, but it is impossible to force it on people because it requires maturity from a person. The essence of this method is “love covers all crimes.”

Each of us is inside our egoism, but we must build a connection between us on top of it. Egoism is unfounded hatred of one’s neighbor. If I see my neighbor’s lawn is greener or he has bought a better car than mine, then I start to hate him.

This is hatred for no reason. If my son bought a nice car, I would only be happy. The more successful my children are, the happier I am, but every success of my neighbor spoils my mood.

This happened on a small scale within the neighborhood, yard, and house. But today, the whole world has turned into a Babylon: rich people and poor people are all arguing, defending their opinions, and disagreeing with each other.

We do not know what a good, peaceful life means when you do not feel any pressure. It is like living in paradise. There is no time and space and everything goes smoothly and easily. Everyone helps each other, lets them go ahead. If you need something, everyone rushes to your aid. You can be sure that you will always be supported at the right moment.

We are not used to such a life and cannot imagine it. Abraham explained to the Babylonians that it is impossible to continue living in our growing egoism and quarreling with each other. 99% of all our forces are spent on survival in the conditions of this internecine struggle.

But what if selfishness is so huge? It dominates us; it forces everyone to fight for their opinion, and compels everyone to consider themselves the smartest. It is impossible to fight your nature, and it is not necessary—you just need to rise above it.

Everyone has their own opinion, as it happens between relatives, but we are all united by a family that we all have to take care of together. We need to take this example from life. Let’s say my children do not share my political views: one has more conservative, right–wing views, the other has left-wing views, the third has become Orthodox religious, etc., everyone votes for their own party.

But if we are one family, then despite this, we love everyone and help everyone. It is important to us that this is a person close to us, a member of our family. That is how we have to take care of all the people—as if they were one family.

Then we will not pay attention to the difference of views. If someone wants to live differently, let them live. Everyone can stay with their ego if they consider themselves obligated to love others above it. Others think differently from me, but I do not put pressure on them or try to convince them by force. Everyone is free to remain as they are, which means that all crimes will be covered by love, just like in a good family.

I cancel myself in front of others and do not dictate my opinion to them, but on the contrary, I am ready to join in their desires and help them. And so everyone does relative to the others, thanks to which we create a special, warm common field, which is called the feeling of a family or one people.

We are enveloped in a cloud of love, mutual participation, unification, warmth, reciprocity. It is something completely new. It did not exist before, it is built precisely on this principle of “love that covers all sins.”
Everyone stays with their egoism, but we know how to deal with it. After all, egoism is given to us by nature, and it is obvious to us today that we cannot do anything about it. But from Abraham, we got a technique that allows us to overcome this egoism and unite.

Those who know how to connect above egoism are called Jews (Yehudim), from the word “Yehud” (unity), or the people of Israel, Yashar-El, that is, straight to the Creator. The nation of Israel was created on this basis.

After leaving Babylon, from petty strife, Israel finds itself in a period called the Egyptian exile, which is slavery to its egoism. Egoism dominates us and does not allow us to connect. No matter how hard we try, no matter how hard we work, nothing works.

It is called slavery, which is exhausting work on our material. We try to build something out of it between us, but nothing comes of it until we realize that we need to rise above our ego. It happens after many blows and hard work.

As a result, we decide that it is impossible to continue to exist like this. This is the situation we find ourselves in today. Otherwise we will just destroy each other in an internecine war.

We need to really realize that our life is slavery. The power of evil that lives in us eats us and destroys us. Then we will agree to rise above egoism as we did once before. We do not know how to do this, but at least we are fleeing from mutual hatred, we want to get out from under the power of the Pharaoh.

This means that we are leaving Egypt, running in the dark to no one knows where. We only understand that we can no longer exist in it. And then we come to Mount Sinai, seeing what kind of hatred (sin) exists between us.

We agree to rise above this hatred and unite into one person with one heart, to achieve mutual guarantee, to accept the Torah, that is, the method of unification. The main rule of the Torah is to love one’s neighbor as oneself. That is when we are born as the people of Israel, as it says, “Today you have become My people.”

Freedom in the Lack of Freedom from Love

938.05Comment: Most people perceive Passover as a week of celebration. Yet suddenly you are saying that this is a state one can be in every day.

My Response: The moment I discover within myself that I am under the control of Pharaoh (egoism) and that I somehow need to rise above it, to exit it, I immediately try to make every possible effort to overcome it.

But on my own, I cannot conquer the ego; I don’t fight it; I even love it. This is the most important thing a person must understand! After all, egoism helps me rise. It is said that one must thank for the bad just as for the good. Great is the one who can turn their enemy into a beloved one.

If you look at egoism the right way, then we need this force. That is why it is said that Pharaoh brought the people of Israel closer to the Creator. If we did not have an evil inclination, if we did not experience suffering, we would never feel the need for connection with the upper force, with the Creator.

But we are now considering this question on a practical, corporeal level. If we are in a state of constant egoistic growth, then Passover is an example of rising above the ego for us. It is not for nothing that it is said: in every generation, a person must see himself as if he was coming out of Egypt.

“Generation” here means every moment in time, because every change within me is considered a new generation. I must always feel as if I am coming out of Egypt even though immediately I fall into a new Egypt, and again I come out, and again I fall. In this way, I quickly complete all my corrections and reach the goal.

How is this achieved? The wisdom of Kabbalah gives a very simple explanation: through connection! The final goal we must reach is “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and this can be attained only through all possible efforts to draw closer to one another.

Kabbalah explains which efforts exactly. After all, our world is full of various ideas, theories, and practices. Everything people have come up with has been drawn from different philosophies, religions, beliefs, and psychological tricks as a substitute for the wisdom of Kabbalah.

Humanity has been searching for a way to tame its egoism because it tears us apart. It prevents us from living in families, from communicating with friends, and from interacting correctly with one another. What can be done with nature itself? Why is it set against us? And it is not just nature, man himself is set against himself!

People do not have the correct method of education. Therefore, they introduced laws that suppress, constrain, and diminish egoism in attempts to subdue it. Suppression is the foundation of all religions. But what we need is a method that would balance egoism so that each person could use it correctly and not suppress it!

The revolutionary aspect of the wisdom of Kabbalah lies in the free development of egoism and in rising above it afterward.

Kabbalah brings a person to a state of freedom. You are not ashamed, you do not scold yourself, you do not blame others. You simply must constantly strive to reveal the method of complementing egoism with its opposite force so they would work together correctly.

Egoism would raise the altruistic force, the force of love, and together they would work in a harmonious symbiosis, rolling back and forth: pe-sach, pe-sach.

It is impossible to do without the exile from the good quality of love into the qualities that Egypt embodies: cruelty, hatred, and control. But suddenly, when these qualities are covered with love, you no longer feel them as such, and you carry them out from love even though it might seem that you are strictly constrained.

In order to love your neighbor as yourself, you must care for everyone! So where is your freedom in that? On the contrary! You constantly think only about what others lack and how you could help them. In the end, where is the “I”?

It is a paradox, but through love, you forget about yourself, and then you are completely free. You are in constant motion, in constant care, yet it is sweet, and there is nothing more joyful. It is like a mother caring for her baby, and it gives her immense pleasure.

That is why we simply need to understand how egoism begins to work together with the quality of love in such a harmony that we no longer feel it as egoism. We need it; without it, we would not feel any positive sensations.

I can feel another precisely because I do not want it, but by inversely turning it into a new object, I receive new feelings. In other words, the greater the hatred, the greater the love.

It is written in The Book of Zohar that the students of Rabbi Shimon, who wrote it, felt deep hatred toward each other before each lesson, and then, as they began to unite, they created love. Only in this way were they able to attain this spiritual quality and describe it in The Book of Zohar.

They had to feel a burning hatred in order to then rise above it and reveal, in place of the consuming fire of hatred, the fire of love. Only from the contrast of these two qualities were they able to describe the immense illumination they attained.

The Spiritual Meaning of Crossing the Red Sea

laitman_749_02Question: Was there ever a miracle that the Red Sea parted and the Israeli people went through it when they fled from Pharaoh?

Answer: The Torah doesn’t talk about events of our material world. It talks only about what happens between our souls. In this sense, we pass through an inner spiritual state called “Crossing the Red Sea.”

The exodus from Egypt and the freedom from the slavery of Egypt is freedom from the control of our ego, from the “Angel of Death.” In principle, on the way to this freedom, we move through some kind of passage called crossing the Red Sea. It symbolizes the end of Egypt, the end of our ego, after which we can become a free people.

A unique force of unity is hidden within nature that is called the Creator. When we invest in efforts to unite, to get closer to each other against our desire, then through these efforts the higher power creates a state where “splitting the Red Sea” will be discovered. It moves us from the egoistic nature to a nature of bestowal and love.

Everything Begins with Pesach

laitman_740_02At this time, we approach a state when humanity faces a need to change its attitude to life, to itself, to its developmental goals. Humans have to realize that there is a purpose in life and that nature leads us to achieve it.

We will advance towards mutual understanding, benevolent attainment, and comfortable existence to the extent of our correspondence with the program that guides us.

The goal we must reach is above this world, beyond life and death. Eventually, we will transition to the level of immortality. This world gradually will dissolve and we will enter a totally new dimension. By the way, nowadays all worldly sciences confirm this fact. We are going through this process as we speak.

Everything starts with Pesach (Passover), i.e., when we realize that we are capable of rising above our egoism and we shift to unity and reciprocity by observing the rule of “loving our neighbor as ourselves,” or at least following the rule of “not doing to others what we do not wish for ourselves.” In other words, when we feel like brothers and maintain mutual guarantee. This holiday is about realizing that exiting from the ego is possible.

When one “leaves Egypt” and rises to the next level one regards the prior state as absolute wickedness and clearly sees how it can be used correctly. This explains why it is said that attainment happens at the foot of Mount Sinai (derived from “Sina,”  hatred) when all human properties “stand around the mountain,” whereas our aspirations, the point of Moses, rise to its peak.

Mount Sinai represents a huge egoism and it is absolutely essential to make us rise above our qualities that stand for the entire nation gathered around the Mountain.

The final goal of human advancement is to reach the peak of the Mountain where Moses and the Creator are.

Passover—The Exodus from Egypt

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Leviticus,” 23:4 – 23:8: These are the Lord’s appointed [holy days], holy occasions, which you shall designate in their appointed time: In the first month, on the fourteenth of the month, in the afternoon, [you shall sacrifice] the Passover offering to the Lord. And on the fifteenth day of that month is the Festival of Unleavened Cakes to the Lord; you shall eat unleavened cakes for a seven day period. On the first day, there shall be a holy occasion for you; you shall not perform any work of labor. And you shall bring a fire offering to the Lord for a seven day period. On the seventh day, there shall be a holy occasion; you shall not perform any work of labor.

Question: Why is it forbidden to work on the first and last days of Passover?

Answer: It is because we distinguish between two states in the spiritual work: awakening from below and awakening from above.

During the awakening from below we evoke the cooperation between the light and the vessel by our yearning. The light corrects the vessel and gives it the right intention. During the awakening from above, this work is fulfilled from above but only because we have created all the right conditions for it in advance.

We make efforts, and thus create the right conditions for the first and last days of the holiday since the week of Passover has to be closed at its ends by states in which we don’t do anything since the upper light does all the work. The first day of the holiday is the beginning of the exodus from Egypt. The last day is the end of the exodus that seals it.

It is important to say that the nations of the world have different calendars. The Christian calendar is based on the movement of the sun. The Muslim calendar is based on the movement of the moon. While the Jewish calendar takes the movement of the sun, the moon, and the earth into account since the earth is the central object between the sun and the moon.

On one hand we take the year into account, which means the revolution of the earth around the sun, and on the other hand we take the month into account, the revolution of the moon around the earth, and compare the two. Thus the Jewish calendar doesn’t change and so, for example, we can calculate in advance which day of the week will be the first day of Passover in another 35 years.

What is more, based on the comparison between the movement of the sun, the earth, and the moon, we can say that Passover cannot be on certain days of the month. This means that everything is accurately related to the general astrological system.

Question: The Torah refers to holy assemblies several times. Why do we have to gather in Passover?

Answer: Holy assemblies during Passover are the most important thing for the Israeli nation since it is actually thanks to their desire to unite that they need to come out of Egypt.

A person’s union with a group of people, with the society, with the nation, or with the whole world is actually different levels of the exodus from Egypt (from the ego). When we attain the force of unity, a certain tension, this exodus, the detachment from the ego, takes place.

It is always among us, separating us and making us feel repulsed by one another. If we begin to compress and condense it, try to unite and connect to one another, then the exit from the ego begins the moment we first attain unity.

On the first day of Passover (the exodus from Egypt) we begin to tighten this connection. Then we work on it during the week and totally unite on the last day of the exodus from Egypt. From that moment on we are a united nation.

But in the meantime, people don’t understand what they should do, although there is a direction that spurs the desire to escape from the ego, it is merely an animalistic instinct without the proper awareness. People will acquire the recognition when they gather at the foot of Mount Sinai.
