Baal HaSulam, “The Essence of the Wisdom of Kabbalah”: “This wisdom is no more and no less than a sequence of roots, which hang down by way of cause and consequence, by fixed, determined rules, interweaving to a single, exalted goal described as ‘the revelation of His Godliness to His creatures in this world.’”

The wisdom of Kabbalah is intended for the created beings in this world in order to guide them to the attainment of the Creator according to absolute, fixed laws, which gradually lead people to His attainment, feeling, perception, and eventually to adhesion with Him, which means to the complete revelation of the Creator.

And who is the Creator? He is the highest, general, integral force of nature, which includes all of creation.

This is the reason why understanding this state enables us to understand what is actually going on and to respond correctly to what the Creator, nature, is doing with us and what we can do with it.

By implementing the wisdom of Kabbalah, we can see our participation in creation, in nature. After all, Kabbalah is the science of nature, of everything that was created, including the root, that is, the Creator.

This means that studying this science, especially in our times, is indeed essential. This is what our evolution pushes us toward, and it happens through a constant increase of suffering and lack of understanding in order to force us to know the Creator, to reveal Him, to understand how crucial it is for us to be in contact with Him.

Question: There are neurosciences that study the way we think. They say that the person builds a certain model of reality, that is, what is obvious to him. If he needs to buy milk, for example, he knows what store to go to and goes there automatically.

Why is this level of thinking not explained in Kabbalah, that is, what happens in the brain? Baal HaSulam says that there are five senses, data input which is somehow processed and creates our internal perspective. This program exists above the desire. Why is it not explained?

Answer: This program exists below the desire and belongs to the subconscious.

Kabbalah does not engage in the functioning of the brain as a calculator, nor in muscle memory, nor in any memory mechanisms. It only deals with the soul.

Our desire is called a soul. It is not in our corporeal body and it is not in our head.

The Creator created the desire. It can be egoistic, that is, directed only at loving one’s self, or it can change within us, with the help of the Creator, into an altruistic desire, that is, in bestowal and love of others. There is no other way.

In parallel to shifting the vector of the desire: from “for my own sake” to “for the sake of others,” we begin to feel the upper world, and only then do we understand how everything works, where the operating signals come from, and so on.

Everything else related to matter, the brain, etc., is not studied in Kabbalah because it does not interest us. We are only interested in the pure desire that is not part of any form of matter. This is how we explore it and master it.

Question: If I am not interested in listening to what other participants in the lesson are saying because sometimes they bring outright nonsense, what is the benefit of such lessons for me? I came to listen to the higher one, the Kabbalist, and I am forced to listen to people like me and even worse than me.

Answer: If we are speaking from the point of view of the science Kabbalah, you need to listen to me at least, then open the books written by great Kabbalists and simply study them from beginning to end. If you have a good mechanical memory, then you will remember their content.

But you will not become a Kabbalist just from this because you will not have your place, what is called a Kli, a vessel, in which you can feel the upper world. The upper world becomes known precisely in the connection between simple, even novice Kabbalists, who are trying to be in touch with each other. It is not even so much that they try to be in touch as they try to be in connection. Trying and striving are of utmost importance.

So, it is not about knowledge. Kabbalah does not penetrate a person through knowledge. It touches a person through his feelings and aspirations.

Kabbalistic parameters are felt between people. When I strive toward you, and you strive toward me, and we try to create a certain field of mutual attraction between us, then we begin to reveal the Creator between us in the form of the light called NRNHY.

Therefore, if you are interested in understanding the upper world, then you need to gather with Kabbalists. And if you are only interested in how forces and their actions are called in Kabbalah, then you need to read books. There is nothing more to be said.

Question: It is said that the Creator hears all prayers. What does it mean?

Answer: The Creator hears all prayers regardless of what level a person is at or how he evaluates himself: as higher, lower, average, it does not matter. If his request is to come closer to the property of the Creator, then he summons the upper light that corrects him, and he ascends.

Remark: It turns out that there is some absolute, higher force, a primary source, energy. I can evoke this energy as I desire to be like it. However, I don’t know what this force is.

My Comment: For this, you must pray; that is, you need to find out who you are and what kind of energy it is, how different you are, and how you can turn to it, how you can raise your desire to become like it so that it affects you and corrects you.

Question: There are four degrees of understanding the Torah in the abbreviation PARDES. How can we understand Kabbalah without understanding them?

Answer: The fact is that we are not studying actual Kabbalah yet, which represents these four levels of understanding the Torah, the world, and nature.

We are just starting to develop our tools for understanding, knowing who we are, how we perceive reality, how we can influence ourselves, etc. We are yet to reveal all the levels of attainment: the still, vegetative, animate, and human levels.

In the meantime, we are outside of them because we talk about attaining the internal structure of nature: its structure and the mechanism that manages everything.

But in principle, we are climbing the steps described in the Torah from its secret to its simple understanding.

Question: If the main idea of all world religions is to unite people with some common idea and raise them to a higher power, why has the science of Kabbalah not become the leading world religion in these 6,000 years?

Answer: The science of Kabbalah appeared 6,000 years ago, and the foundations of religions 3,500 years ago in Ancient Babylon. Christianity arose about 2,000 years ago and Islam 600 years later.

The science of Kabbalah is not a religion. You do not need to believe in it, you just need to realize it. The reason for the emergence of religions was the concealment of the science of Kabbalah.

Kabbalah does not affirm anything unfounded; it encourages a person to reveal and find what it is talking about. This is a science that is called Hochmat a-Kabbalah (the wisdom of Kabbalah) that is, wisdom. It consists of no sacred acts, passes, or anything else.

It does not say that you must believe. You must come to a state called faith. But faith is a state of bestowal, of rising above one’s egoism, not the faith that religions speak of.

That is, Kabbalah has absolutely nothing to do with them. So, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you are. Nationality and gender do not matter. The main thing is the desire to know where you live and what for. Kabbalah does not divide people into any signs. Whoever desires comes and engages in it.

Question: Why is there only one truth and it lies in Kabbalah? Why aren’t there any other different paths to discover the spiritual world?

Answer: Egoism is created as opposed to the upper light. There is nothing besides the Creator (light, quality of love and bestowal) and the created being (quality of reception, self-concern, sensations in oneself).

Thus, all that is needed is to build the right connection between them for egoism (desire to enjoy) to acquire the form of the Creator. It is as simple as one plus one, nothing more. Thus there cannot be many methodologies.

By its nature, the method of Kabbalah is very rigid and categorical. It says: “Do this, and that’s it!” Therefore, we cannot offer it in this way to others. For now, we have to soften it, structure it, place it in some socially acceptable parameters so that it feels more palatable, like a bitter pill with a sweet coating.

Question: But all other methodologies come from the Creator too: “There is none else besides Him.” There are about 3,800 various spiritual practices. Is this a game on His part for the whole humanity to come closer to Him?

Answer: There is an enormous number of different souls that approach their final correction differently. However, their final correction will still happen with the help of the method of Kabbalah.

They must necessarily acquire a screen over their egoism and become similar to the Creator. But for now, they are not drawn to it. There are so many religions, faiths, philosophies, and mystical practices out there for them.

Question: So, in order to establish a connection with the Creator a person must “dress” his desire—acquire a screen on his egoism?

Answer: Yes. As in technology: there should be a plus, a minus, and a resistor between them. Otherwise, a short circuit will occur.

Kabbalah Does Not Operate with Numbers

Comment: Kabbalah, as a rule, speaks of some kind of qualitative condition. For example, historians write that three million people left Egypt, of which 600,000 were men, and the rest were women and children. But Kabbalah doesn’t operate with numbers at all. Gematria is a qualitative quantity.

It is possible that it was not three million people that left Egypt since this figure means a certain qualitative quantity.

My Response: A certain pattern exists in which the potential states of spiritual forces, described in the primary sources, must materialize at least once.

Historians and archaeologists look for this via their own sources, measure it by their standards, weigh it in grams and kilograms, translate it into kilometers, and therefore, they do it a bit differently.

Question: How should we use such information? Suppose I read that several thousand years ago there was an exodus from Egypt. But I’m not a historian and I’m not interested in this. How can I use this for my own good?

Answer: We are talking about the ascent above our egoism, which is performed by a group of people who strive for this. In our time, as well as in those days, this is accomplished via the same actions, efforts, and unification among people called mutual guarantee.

It makes no difference whether you existed 3,000 years ago and thus rose from egoism, meaning “exited Egypt,” or today where you do it in a group of people, in the ten, whether here or at the other end of the world. After all, we have many groups that work in different countries and speak different languages.
