Question: Why do you think that anyone who is concerned about the meaning of life can study Kabbalah?

Answer: I base my words on what happened in ancient Babylon where the Babylonian priest Abraham revealed Kabbalah to everyone. He recruited a small group of people that he began to teach Kabbalah to, rallied them into the so-called nation, and later brought them out of Babylon.

But this was not a nation, it was just a group that moved away from ancient Babylonian civilization. As a result, it should present the Kabbalistic methodology to the whole world.

Comment: There are people who would like to study Kabbalah, but while searching they turn to various rabbis, and are dissuaded in every possible way with arguments that only a religious Jew can study Kabbalah and a woman cannot study it at all.

My Response: What can be said about people who do not understand why Kabbalah was given to us? We must take an example from two historical figures Abraham and Sarah who taught everyone without exception. The Torah says so: “And everyone will know Me, young and old. And My house will be called the house of prayer for all nations.”

Prophets, Book of Joshua, 15:63; 16:10: As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

And they did not drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt among the Ephraimites to this day, and they became servants under tribute.

To the extent that the people of Israel do not correct themselves, they will remain dominated by the desires and goals called other nations. It will be so until the final correction (Gmar Tikkun).

Eventually, at the end of days, there will be no other nations left except the people of Israel, that is, all those who strive for the Creator. Moreover, we are not talking about nationalities or any nationalistic properties. Everyone can stay in their traditions and culture. The only thing that is necessary is to strive for mutual connection between them. This is what Baal HaSulam wrote in “The Last Generation” and all his other articles.

Today we need to come to a state where we overcome these nations in us and guide them toward the intention to act and build everything for the sake of the Creator. Then there will be no need to expel anyone. We banish our intentions and everyone remains in this new world.

The Torah does not say that you need to kill, destroy, or bury. All wars that were fought were mostly spiritual wars. The spirit of the people had to win in connection with others despite the egoistic opposition of the enemy.

Now the world is in such contradiction and fragmentation so that all this would be very quickly realized. And although it is still puffed up and we still want to subdue, conquer, and capture, inside it already manifests a huge emptiness and a sense of futility of any conquests.

This means that we are approaching the land of Israel in order to realize that only the Creator, the one and only, is the upper guiding force for all who want only one thing: to be able to reveal Him in unity between us, and then all egoistic desires will become altruistic. This will be the conquest of the land of Israel.

Prophets, Joshua, 14:13 – 15: And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.

Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fulfilled the will of the Lord God of Israel.

And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba (the city of Arba); Arba was the greatest man among the ‘Anakim.’ And the land had rest from war.

Question: Hebron is probably the most turbulent place on Earth. What is in it? Historically, this is the first capital of King David, the second holiest city after Jerusalem. The cave of the Patriarchs where our forefathers are buried is there. But why is it such a turbulent place?

Answer: Because it is for this place that a symbolic war between Israel and the rest of the world is waged because everyone wants a connection with the Creator.

Connection with the Creator happens through the forefathers. Thus, Hebron is the point that connects every nation with Him. Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, are all serious bonds between the Creator and a man only if he would symbolically conquer Hebron.

However, he will conquer from the point of view of connection with Him, at least an external connection, because all those who misunderstand the connection with the Creator believe: “If we reign there, then this place will be ours.” They do not understand that only internal unity, which can be reached by rising above egoism, gives this connection.

Therefore, for as many years as Hebron has existed, and it existed even before the people of Israel entered there, there were wars over it. The Turks, the Crusaders, and the Arabs all wanted Jerusalem and Hebron.

Question: You have also been to Hebron. What do you feel about this place?

Answer: Absolute emptiness. It is possible to say that there is some kind of connection, but this feeling is very vague. The only feeling that I have and have always had awakens on the grave of Rabbi Shimon. I could see it even in Rabash. I could really feel there that he was physically close to the Creator. How to explain this, I do not know.

And in other places, there are absolutely no feelings. Not at the Wailing Wall, not in Hebron. However, when Rabash asked Baal HaSulam: “Why did you go to Hebron,” he answered: “Because it is said that a person should try to reach the degree of his forefathers.”

Question: Will there ever be peace in Hebron?

Answer: Only when we are done with all our uncorrected desires.

The people of Israel were formed from those people who felt that it is their duty to connect in order to attain the meaning of life and its purpose, the correction of creation and the upper force. That is why they called themselves Israel (Yashar-kel), which means “straight to the Creator.”

Abraham chose these people from all the inhabitants of Babylon, that is, from all the nations of the world at that time, and taught them the main principle of connection: love your neighbor as yourself.

In this way, they rose above egoism, which is constantly growing and swelling by leaps and bounds in human society. This growth is purposeful in order to ensure a sufficient gap between the huge egoism of humanity and the power of connection above egoism, which society is obliged to achieve.

When we reach a certain degree of confrontation between egoism and connection, then within it we begin to reveal the upper force, the upper world, and us belonging to the spiritual world.

The growing egoism serves as an engine that lifts us from this world to the spiritual one, from reception to bestowal, from hatred to love. If we follow the principles that “love will cover all crimes” and “everyone judges according to his own flaws,”then individually and together as a whole group, we will be able to reach such a strong connection together that the Creator will be revealed within it.

Over thousands of years, the group assembled by Abraham in Babylon has changed a lot. Part of it has disappeared, dissolved, in the nations of the world, and is yet to be revealed. There were many in the people of Israel who attained the degree of the Creator to the extent of their ability to overcome egoism and connect.

Over the years, the conditions changed, but the principle remained the same because the laws of the world are constant and unchangeable. We just need to study them and fulfill them in order to reach the corrected state.

Therefore, we need to study the process that the group of Abraham went through in history, since ” the deeds of the fathers will become a sign for the sons.” From this we will understand in which direction we are moving, what is happening to us, and what signs of the deeds of the fathers can be seen today since the eternal principle of love your neighbor as yourself, the law of unity, is always in action.

From the Ari onward, all Kabbalists were saying that we have entered the era of the Mashiach, that is, the time of the end of correction. There is one last stage of our development left, which can be quite long. As always, the nations of the world are applying pressure on the people of Israel, and this pressure is designed to force us to unite, at least through suffering.

Jews must draw conclusions from their history and connect and take an example from the fathers. Through this connection, we will almost immediately feel the fading of external pressure because of our correct reaction to it and our efforts to connect.

Therefore, all the wars that are arising against us will immediately subside, because we will begin to advance by ourselves, without external pressure. If we ourselves reveal the forces for advancement and rush forward, then those who impeded us instead will begin to help.

This will be the correct tendency, in agreement with the single upper force, that wants to see the entire humanity in such unity.

If we do not make efforts to advance toward unity, then to the extent of the lack of these efforts, the nations of the world and negative forces within the people of Israel themselves will rise up and start fighting, confrontation from all sides, in order to awaken us and force us to make the right conclusion—to understand the reason for this pressure and what we should do.

Today we are in a very delicate, acute state. I spoke about this danger many years ago, but I did not expect it to happen so quickly and that already in our time such a special state would develop between all countries and nations all over the world.

We are living in the era of new technologies and global communication and have reached a certain inner understanding of things that are happening: the responsibility of man for the Earth and the entire Universe.

Nowadays, there are many highly educated people with a broad view, not as it was before. Almost everyone has the opportunity to travel around the world and see the life of other nations and connect with the entire world above distances and differences in languages.

Yet in the matter of anti-Semitism, we see that nothing helps: the law that advances humanity to connection acts harshly, one might even say cruelly. First of all, it puts pressure on those who should be the first to lead humanity as one nation that is obliged to do this work, to become pioneers on this path, and to lead the entire world.

There is no way to bypass this law. The upper light, the upper forces, are organized in such a way that as soon as the people of Israel, a group gathered during the time of Abraham from all nations, unite again, all paths open up before it. There are no obstacles; on the contrary, there are forces of nature ready to help them and lift them to spiritual degrees on their shoulders. After this all of humanity will be happy to unite.

This is how the upper governance is arranged and this is how it will be. Everything depends on Israel, as Baal HaSulam writes in the Introduction to The Book of Zohar, because only they have the freedom of choice.

Those who are aspiring to come closer to the Creator are called Israel. They feel obliged to bring themselves and all of humanity to a common connection and spiritual ascent. Any person in the world, of any nationality; black, white, red, or yellow; and all four layers in humanity; the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th; belong to one nation, which is obliged to reach unity and adhesion with the Creator.

Therefore, all over the world pressure on this corporeal group called Israel is growing, although they do not understand what is happening to them. After all, they have long ago left this work of leading themselves and the entire world to the adhesion with the Creator. Humanity, too, has not received the knowledge that the world is undergoing a purposeful development that leads it to complete correction and therefore does not understand the reasons for its hatred.

The Jews are confused and perplexed about what they want from them, and because of the great egoism, they only dream of peace and prosperity. The nations of the world feel that the Jews are concealing and hiding something from them, and not allowing them to come to a good life.

That is why these two groups feel lost in the dark, where the aggression coming from the nations of the world bumps into the hatred and fear that the Jews feel.

It is clear that this does not benefit either of them: great suffering awaits both those who commit violence and those who are stubborn and do not want to hear about correction. Therefore, it is our duty to explain the situation to both, and to push the correction process forward as much as possible.

#Jews, Yehudi, those who are united. The nation of #Israel are those who strive for unity, in order to be as one man with one heart. By rising above all the differences, we will achieve #peace in the world, but first of all inside ourselves.

Disagreements come so we could unite above them. Each one annuls himself and concedes to the other, in order to unite. Only unity of hearts, by everyone’s care about the well-being of the country, nation, world—will save humanity.

If Israeli society will feel that it is in a hostile world, which will never run out of hatred for Jews and #Israel, it will understand that the only means of salvation is unity among us. As much as we unite is how much we’ll be able to chase all the haters away!

By hating each other, the #Jews beget and raise their enemies. Israel begets them because warring groups exist inside the nation. If Jews start treating each other well and become a single nation, no enemy will want to wage war against them.

Regrettably, I don’t think that the series of debacles that enabled the escape of six terrorists with blood on their hands from imprisonment will teach us any significant lessons. For years, the Israeli society has been on a decline. For years, we have been growing alienated from each other and indifferent to the country that was established for a very meaningful purpose. The Arabs already know they don’t have to fight us; they can wait and let us disintegrate from within until there is nothing left.

The corrosion does not begin with the Israel Prison Service, and it certainly does not end there. Therefore, I am not at all impressed by the celebrations of the media at the capture of four of the six terrorists. They need to fuss over something; it is how they make their money, but in the end, it is meaningless.

The crux of the problem lies in our unwillingness to be what we are supposed to be. Instead of assuming our responsibility for ourselves and for the world, and unapologetically asserting our position, we cater to the interests of enemies who want our destruction, who bribe us with phony smiles of affection. But they feel no affection for us, only contempt.

Indeed, how can anyone respect a nation that does not respect itself? When Jewish Israelis pride themselves in being activists against the existence of the Jewish state, and believe that they are morally superior because of it, can we blame anyone for holding similar views? We are digging under our own feet, and then we are alarmed by our falling.

The Jewish nation has a unique legacy, unique values, and a unique way of life. If we follow them, just as every nation follows its own values, we will be what we are meant to be—a nation whose members love each other as themselves, and set an example of unity in a world torn by division and hatred. This is what we are supposed to do in the Jewish state, the State of Israel, and setting this example is the meaning of being “a light unto nations.”

When Israelis declare that the brutal terrorists who escaped are their “men of the year,” it does not testify to their moral superiority; it testifies to the depth of their hatred for their own people. If anyone can glorify a murderer of women and children for the sole reason that those women and children were members of his own nation, it testifies to that person’s hatred for his people. When the world sees that the Jewish nation has such people within it, can it view Jews in any positive light? Can anyone appreciate a nation that hates itself that much?

In his paper, The Nation, the great 20th century kabbalist and thinker Baal HaSulam explained what it means to be an equitable nation: “The only hope is to thoroughly establish for ourselves a new national education, to reveal and ignite once more the natural national love that has been dimmed within us … for two millennia… Then we will know that we have a natural, reliable foundation to be rebuilt and to continue our existence as a nation, qualified to carry itself as all the nations of the world. … [However] Here I must stress concerning the above-mentioned national education: Although I aim to plant great love among the individuals in the nation in particular and for the entire nation in general, in the fullest possible measure [due to our vow to set an example of unity], this is not at all similar to … fascism. I loathe it, and my conscience is completely clear of it. …To easily perceive the difference [between national love and fascism] … we should compare it to the attributes of egoism and altruism in a person. … Clearly, the measure of egoism … is a necessary condition in the actual existence of the creature. Without it, it would not be a separate and distinct being in itself. Yet, this should not at all deny the measure of altruism in a person. The only thing required is to set distinct boundaries between them: The law of egoism must be kept in all its might, to the extent that it concerns the minimum existence. And with any surplus of that measure, permission is granted to waive it for the well-being of one’s fellow person.”

Regrettably, we are not doing the minimum to establish national love in order to secure our existence. In order to do that, we must know how we were created, what for, and how we can achieve our goal. If we realize our legacy, that people will appreciate us only when we set an example of solidarity and cohesion, and that under any other circumstances they will hate us, perhaps we will be more attentive to our duty. If we do this, it will make us Israel. Even more importantly, it will make us an example, the only example that the world needs in order to overcome its countless, deepening rifts, which are the only reason for humanity’s afflictions.

I vividly remember twenty years ago when I watched the 9/11 terrorist attacks live on TV. My then teenager daughter and I were leafing through a newly released colorful book when she suddenly stirred from the pages and gazed at the TV screen and told me, “Look what is happening!” I initially said, “No, it’s a movie,” but soon realized that it was real. America was under siege and the world would enter a new era of terrorist threats on a large scale.

I immediately felt we had witnessed just the beginning of a well-oiled terrorist machine, a meticulously coordinated action perpetrated by individuals willing to die for an ideal, and nothing could stop them.

The series of flights hijacked as weapons against the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people. Unfortunately, I do not see that after two decades of the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil the world has truly changed.

The world does not feel this blow as a sign of the need for connection. On the contrary, each nation acts in a selfishly private way. Countries spend billions trying to negotiate with or erase terrorist organizations, but achieve nothing because they do not do it as a coordinated effort. Conversely, the terrorists are actually in touch with each other, have substantial power, money, and weapons, efficient intelligence and very good knowledge of what to do, how to operate and when. That is why our efforts to erase terrorism have proved unsuccessful.

Islamic fundamentalists have a radical and deeply rooted ideology so nothing breaks them. Nowadays, terrorism is a profession. A terrorist can sit in power, lead a country, and be accepted and respected in international organizations such as the United Nations as we have seen in previous General Assemblies with the late Yasser Arafat and others.

Since humanity has not learned anything, we can expect more and larger attacks anywhere in the world. We are like children who refuse to admit our flaws to form a united force to face a common enemy.

For now the terrorists are dormant, waiting for an opportunity to cause harm, and they reinforce themselves while governments from both ends of the political spectrum deliberate on how to counter the threats. The next event could easily unfold as an atomic explosion in a sensitive place in the world. The Suez Canal in Egypt and other emblematic places could be potential targets. Today the world is round and if a place is blown up it ripples strongly across the globe.

Terrorist organizations have a foundation, their doctrine believes in a supreme power that should rule the world; that is a strong driving force to perform radical acts against those who think differently. On the other hand, the business of terrorism is a lucrative one. Do suicide terrorists in Gaza need to work? Of course not. Together with their families they receive generous financial assistance from wealthy regimes.

The 9/11 twentieth anniversary also coincides with the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. As a result of such a lengthy and expensive operation and even after Osama Bin Laden has gone, the world is still not a safer place. On the contrary. Borders and security measures were strengthened; inquiries about each and every person have intensified, but no more than that. Besides the actions to prove the U.S., Russia and allies’ pride to combat terrorism in the world, I do not see anything seriously done to eliminate this plague.

The purpose of Islamic fundamentalism is simple. They want to raise the flag of Islam above the whole earth. For the time being there are conflicts between their different factions which have existed for hundreds or thousand years, but I think these divisions will cease in the future. They will eventually reach agreement and we will see all these organizations coalesce under one umbrella as one organization with the intention for all other countries to bend to its will.

That is their Torah, their religion, the ideal they want to live by and die for. They are fundamentalists, not terrorists, to those who look at their unshakable goal in life. Thus, it is a lost case for the West to start explaining to them what is needed and their version of the principles the world needs to be built upon. No one in the world can change their beliefs. So, under such circumstances, the U.S. and the West will end before extremist groups such as the Taliban and others with a strong, ancient and solid foundation, who are willing to die for their cause will vanish, whereas America is tangled up in the name of democracy.

Like it or not, a military solution will be only a palliative action to combat terror. A more comprehensive approach should include a solution at a higher level than our earthly passing calculations.

Unity is the one ingredient that the world needs, but it has no idea how to achieve it. The role of the people of Israel is to become an example of connection to pave the way for the rest of the world. If we want peace and coexistence this is the way to go.

An even more ancient, strong, solid foundation must be tapped into, the foundation of the Israeli nation, Abraham the Patriarch’s method of connection.

As foremost Kabbalist Rav Yehuda Ashlag wrote, the Israeli nation was constructed as a gateway [for] the whole of humanity the world over, until they develop to such an extent that they can grasp the pleasantness and tranquility in love of others. Then the picture of reality will be pleasant and safe.

If the Jews begin to unite, the nations of the world will accept it with joy because they will see that through this unification they can get closer to the essence of creation. With that very point, with that desire from which Anti-Semitism is now growing, they will feel that the right movement has begun because they will start receiving an illumination upon this Reshimo.

Anti-Semitism is the deficiency in the nations of the world, the need to receive the light through the unification of Jews. It is the biggest Anti-Semites who will be the first ones to join the Jews. And we have already seen such dramatic upheavals in history.

Comment: German scholar Johann Reuchlin wrote On the Art of the Kabbalah: (De Arte Cabalistica) in 1517. In it he devotes a section to the relation of the Pythagorean system to the Kabbalah. 

My Response: The original philosophy for everyone was Kabbalah, the science of the forces that rule the world and in the world.

From the tenth century B.C. onward, the ancient Greeks adopted this wisdom from the ancient Jews. It passed to them until they broke away from the Kabbalists and began to interpret it in their own way, believing that the Earth is inhabited by gods, and that all sorts of forces are infused into stones, animals, etc.

This was already a clear totemism, and, of course, nothing remained of Kabbalah, just as nothing remained of it in all religions that took their origin from Kabbalah and then lowered it to the level of our world and all sorts of everyday actions that exist in religions today as their customs and laws.

Comment: I recently spoke with a highly educated woman who said: “Well done to the Jews. They know how to control the whole world.” She expressed a feeling shared by many people that the Jews control everything. Yet in fact, there is no such control at all!

My Response: It doesn’t matter. People subconsciously feel this through some inner feeling.

Question: This is not about control, but rather a task that the Jews must fulfill?

Answer: That’s the problem: no matter what the Jews themselves understand, do, or feel, the laws of governance still pass through them, although they seem to have absolutely nothing to do with them.

Question: What is the Kabbalah Academy, KabU, doing to spread this information around the world?

Answer: We disseminate absolutely everywhere and to absolutely everyone. There are books and other publications in many languages.

Question: Should Jews living outside of Israel should also get involved in this? Or does it only apply to those who live here [Israel]?

Answer: The internal laws of the development of nature and society have led us to a state where we all together involuntarily begin to pass the upper governance through ourselves over animate, vegetative, and still nature.

In principle, today the Jews have, so to speak, fulfilled their role, and what they have left to do is only to pass on to and involve all of humanity in this process.
