We Lack Intention

263Which of our actions is most suitable for the surrounding light that will come and correct us? It is the action of a group that is striving to unite in order to merge with the Creator. The formula is very simple. But the problem is that when we start doing it, we forget for what.

We have not sufficiently clarified the intention in each action. Moreover, it is not the same for different people. We need to work on this as much as possible.

If you add a clearer, more demanding intention to the smallest action, it will be a lot more effective and will bring much more benefit. We are going through many actions right now, but we are not very good at intention. The quality of the effort is what is missing.

There is always a problem with that, in every group and in every state. We can do many actions. I often receive emails where people list everything they have done, and ask: “When will it happen already, and where is all that?” What can I say to that?

Indeed, groups do a lot, but there is not enough intention, or it is not sufficient. According to the level of development of the group, the intention should be much more united, much more scrutinized. The purpose of the intention is to be a battering ram.

In the Footsteps of Our Forefather Abraham

524.01Question: If there is agreement in the group to fulfill the mutual guarantee, is this enough to provide the confidence that will influence me and allow me to come out of egoism?

Answer: One must learn from Abraham how to fulfill mutual guarantee. It is not for nothing that he is called Av (father) Le Am (of the people), the father of the people, the group. This is an example for everyone. It does not matter whether the conditions back then were different or not.

He was the first to implement it by drawing more and more people to himself, by increasingly explaining to them the essence of the law of mutual guarantee, what kind of relationships we must be in so that the Creator will be revealed within us, and so that we will feel the spiritual reality, the kind of existence we are truly in, and so on. Each person can do this by following the path of our forefather Abraham. There is nothing new in this.

Of course, if a group already exists and agrees, in one form or another, to implement the mutual guarantee according to the level of its development, or adopts its attainment as the highest standard—a goal they believe they can reach through their own correction and through mutual support among the members—then this is truly an independent advancement. In that case, the group influences each individual, and each individual influences the group.

There is no need for complex calculations here, but only internalizing this law and understanding that without mutual connection, we will not be similar to the light.

The Path to Success—Fulfilling the Condition of Mutual Guarantee

943Question: We know that in any endeavor, there must be someone responsible. Without that nothing gets done. So why, in inner work, is everyone responsible?

Answer: We see that in any work, if we want to succeed, for example, to build a Sukkah, we divide into teams.

Each team is responsible for its own part—electricity, cooling, heating, kitchen, and so on—and then we succeed. Everyone cares about the overall success, but works on their own portion. Still, everyone is thinking about the common goal.

Now you are asking: in our group, does everyone have to think about Arvut, or can we form a dedicated team for that? Teams are necessary for carrying out tasks that require practical implementation. But each person must have the intention to succeed, and that success is defined as the fulfillment of the condition of Arvut. Everyone must feel that they have come out of their own will to receive.

That is called exodus from Egypt and it is the condition for receiving the Torah. After that, the upper force comes and gives the ability to work with the vessels of reception.

The desire to attain Arvut must be present in each one, otherwise there is no point being in the group at all. Each can perform different actions according to the character of their soul and their capabilities, according to what they are able to do in the group, whether physically, mentally, or theoretically, but the intention must be shared by all.

You cannot divide responsibilities by saying, “You deal with the group’s intention and we will do the action.” Baal HaSulam says that Arvut must apply to everyone. Each one places the whole world on the scale of merit. Each one! You cannot shift this burden onto others because each person has their own vessel (Kli) that they must correct through Arvut.

From my Kli, I must provide my share of Arvut for everyone. He must provide it from his Kli, another from theirs, and so on. And if someone is missing, then because we are all connected, I will be lacking what he was supposed to contribute. I will feel: yes, the group is good, and I always get help, but still something is missing.

But I should not worry about whether I will be filled with Arvut or not. I do not know that. What happens is, a person reaches a state where he breaks free from the will to receive and begins to work in bestowal. That is called crossing the Machsom.

How Do We Get Closer to the Goal?

942A group is those people who kind of agree to achieve a goal called adhesion with the Creator. This is a potential agreement. They have not achieved it yet, nor do they even agree with it, but they determine for themselves this is actually the goal.

This is what the authentic sources say, and we feel that it must be so. So let us start building some mechanisms within ourselves, some levels of work, and apply effort to help us get closer to the goal.

Of course, eventually we will find that progress occurs only with the help of the light that corrects, regulates, and connects all parts of Adam HaRishon.

We will determine all our actions according to how much correcting light we can attract to ourselves.

Accordingly, actions will be more or less important, those you need to think about all the time and those you cannot always think about.

Each time there is a different revelation, a different understanding of the means, but always the right realization. It consists of the light checking and correcting the Kelim, while we must attract it through actions that will achieve this in the most beneficial way.

The Awakening of Souls

941Rabbi Elazar, the son of Rabbi Shimon, writes that everyone must attain the condition of Arvut (mutual guarantee). We have no possibility of connecting souls into one Kli (vessel) other than through the correction between them, which is called Arvut.

Arvut is merely the realization of unity. It is not some artificial or secondary condition that has other causes. There is only one reason—the merging of souls in such a way that they become similar to the light and merge with it. It is very simple.

How can it be that some soul, some desire from those included in Adam HaRishon, would unite with the rest if not through Arvut, when it gives itself over to all the other souls as an inseparable part that is fused with them?

Of course, in our world this must find expression in such a form that both the nations of the world and Israel will ultimately be included in the law of Arvut.

During the exile, the people of Israel mixed with the nations of the world, and now the notions of “the people of Israel” and “the nations of the world” are such that we do not exactly know who is where. We do not know the tribes of Israel; we do not know how the mixing occurred.

Therefore there are many cases in which, among the so-called nations of the world, here and there we observe such an awakening that does not exist within the people of Israel. If some soul is awakening, this is a sign that it has already reached the possibility of fulfilling its role.

In other words, if someone is capable of taking the obligation to attain such a correction as Arvut upon themselves, they are called “Israel” in relation to all the others who have not yet reached this.

And those souls that have already attained or want to attain this must relate to the rest as to the nations of the world—to correct, to connect, and to care for them.

Such a division no longer corresponds to belonging to any nation; this division is more internal: one who strives toward the Creator is called “Israel” and one who still does not strive is called “nations of the world.”

It is said that the people of Israel were sent into exile only in order to attach the nations of the world to themselves. And we see that there are those in whom the desire for the Creator lives, and the part of Israel in them, as a result of the mixing, is very strong. There is nothing to be done; this is the result of the shattering and the exile, which were predetermined from above.

Our Task

942Question: Do we lack the development of Aviut to advance?

Answer: We do not worry about Aviut, whether it is revealed or not. We must take care of the connection between us in the conditions given. We receive the level of Aviut with all the heaviness, confusion, and hindrances corresponding to the level, according to its nature. That is how it should be, period! We have nothing to be indignant about and no need to find out why this is the case and not otherwise.

We do not understand this. We have no comprehension in the revelation of the common vessel, even in its smallest part! So what can we say about this?!

We must accept this above knowledge. Of course, we can explore this, but all these scrutinies may divert us from the action itself.

There is only one direction. The levels of the Aviut will be revealed, obstacles will be revealed, all kinds of conditions, internal and external, will be revealed, and we must accept them because each revelation is the revelation of another stage and another, where we will have to make connections, and create a common Kli.

Today, according to what is being revealed, we must unite between those who are ready, openly, by mutual agreement. In the rest of the world that is not ready and does not understand what is going on we must spread this knowledge in every possible way so that it rises upward. That is our task.

According to the Magnitude of Desire

243.07Question: Is Arvut (mutual guarantee) the same for Kelim (vessels) with small and large Aviut?

Answer: The law of Arvut does not depend on Aviut. Naturally, it manifests in different forms in accordance with the level of Aviut and the nature of the Kli one has acquired.

What is the difference between degrees of Aviut in relation to Arvut? For example, Abraham and his household fulfilled the law of Arvut, because the Kelim must be connected with each other to a certain degree in order to reveal the upper light that will elevate them to some level of spiritual life.

But they hardly needed to exert effort because their souls were so pure that they understood how to reach adhesion, and through connection among themselves, to reach equivalence of form with the light.

To the extent that each person devotes himself to the group, he merits similarity to the light. And the entire group reaches such a powerful connection in intention for the sake of bestowal that the light begins to shine within it.

However, when the desire within the group becomes more coarse, then naturally the law of Arvut must be implemented in a different form according to the increased Aviut. This creates a problem: a methodology is needed; special lights are needed for the correction of the Kelim. This is what we call the Torah.

Therefore the reason for the need to attain Arvut in the first place becomes less obvious; it disappears. The increased Aviut conceals the Creator, the light withdraws, and it becomes unclear why this is necessary at all.

The desire to receive begins to demand all kinds of things for itself, and the person no longer clearly sees that the world operates according to the law of love for one’s neighbor. One’s perception becomes clouded.

This continues until people no longer believe that this reality operates according to the law of love for others.

They begin to relate to one another based on their own desire to receive, which grows, increasingly confuses a person, and causes him to descend further and further.

This is exactly what happens with us. We find ourselves in inspiration and then in descent. At one moment we feel capable of giving ourselves over and remaining in that state, and then suddenly we begin to make more animalistic, more earthly calculations.

It seems to us that this is the real world, that this is how we must live, that these are the laws we must follow. Everything aligns with the current state you are in, whether your desire to receive has increased or whether it has quieted down within you.

In the Direction of Mutual Guarantee

938.04The main condition for the common soul to be corrected and fit to receive the light is the mutual guarantee between its parts.

We must attain the very state originally created by the Creator by our own efforts. What are those efforts? They are efforts in Arvut.

As we ascend from below upward through the degrees of adhesion, we do so, of course, unconsciously, without strength, without understanding, without prior agreement to what lies ahead. All that is asked of us is to express, even in the simplest and most naïve way, a desire for something we do not yet truly know.

We simply walk, and through the surrounding light (Ohr Makif), we awaken the allure of holiness from the spiritual world upon ourselves. We begin to feel that this is something desirable, and then we act in the direction of Arvut.

What does this mean? It means we move in the direction of the correction of the Kli (vessel). That is, the Creator’s light is present and fills us; our task is only to reveal it. The Creator is already within us. This state is unchanging, but we can uncover it only through a certain action called the Arvut.

Thinking about Arvut

624.01Question: You spoke about those who have studied Kabbalah for many years and still don’t hear that the main thing is Arvut (mutual guarantee). How can I know whether I hear it or not?

Answer: Very simply! It is clear by how much you care about connection with others so that the Creator, the upper light, will be revealed among you, about how much this concern burns within you.

Moreover, it is not overshadowed by visions of what you might supposedly achieve. You don’t need to achieve anything except connection. Not even the Creator needs to be attained. It is written: “If only they would abandon Me but keep My Torah.” What does “My Torah” mean? That is Arvut.

All the laws of the Torah are here, within.

And if this is how you relate to your existence in the world and in the group; that is normal. That is the test.
Question: Do those who don’t hear affect those who do?

Answer: They affect those who hear only if they are capable of reaching Arvut but are lazy. If people are not yet able to hear, but join in, they do not interfere. This includes beginners or those who are currently in various confusions, in a descent, and therefore do not hear; well, what can you do. That is not a problem. The only problem is with those who truly can but are lazy.

So what should we do about this? Should we perhaps establish some sort of order, a system, inspections, and so on? No, we should relate to everyone as Baal HaSulam says: One who is drilling a hole in the boat should be thrown out. But in principle, we should think more about correction.

If our direction, like a team, is the necessity of Arvut, then there can be no one extra inside: either a person joins, or it’s clear that he is a stranger. And the greater the unity among those who agree, the greater the separation between them and those who are not in it.

But even those who are not inside should not be disregarded. We must understand that a person can be in all kinds of states.

The Signs of the Messiah

294.2In our time, the Jewish people are obligated to fulfill the condition of attaining Arvut (mutual guarantee). If they neglect this duty, a compelling force will be applied to them, which forces them to fulfill it through suffering.

The whole world is waiting for this, and because it waits, suffering and misfortunes are revealed on a global scale that causes the world to suffer and through its pain begin to understand the reason behind it all. Ultimately, suffering comes in order to indicate where the solution lies.

In the preface to “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Baal HaSulam writes that the Creator guides a person to the good fate by giving him, within a life full of suffering, a spark that shines faintly from afar through all the darkness.

The same occurs both for us and for the nations of the world. All current relations between us and the nations exist solely to compel us to engage in the practical aspect so that we may attain Arvut. The compelling force must reveal the necessity of this very task to us.

The nations of the world too gradually begin to understand through the suffering they endure where the true solution lies. We can see how they are slowly discovering that the root of the problem lies in Israel, which is seen as the worst part that causes harm to the whole world.

This is already a deeply advanced form of revelation. These are truly the signs of the Messiah.
