A Person Should Express Love

laitman_962.2Baal HaSulam writes that in the future corrected society every nation will maintain its corporeal traditions because they emerged from different spiritual roots of 70 nations. There should be love in the relations between people, but its externally expressed form will correspond to the mentality of each nation. Most importantly, a person should express love—in this, he follows not his own opinion and understanding, but another person’s perception of love, and he adjusts himself to it. If I, a Jew, want to treat a Frenchman, for whom the most delicious food is frogs, then I will look for kosher frogs for him.1

We are obliged to unite not because of the fear of the Creator or the government, but because of the integral connection revealed in nature more and more every day. If we approach such a connection, we will feel good, but if not, then it will be bad for us. Nature demands us to unite and there is nowhere to escape from it.

Today there is fear of the danger of the imminent disappearance of life on earth because of climate warming, ozone holes, and high methane gas concentrations in the atmosphere. But all this will not happen, we will suffocate, but we will not die. We will be forced to go through all the suffering until we fulfill the terms of nature. If unity is embedded in the root of creation, in its ultimate goal, then we will certainly get to it; the only question is the price that we will pay for it.2

The law of the society of the future: everyone receives the existential necessities in order to give a hundred percent of themselves to serve society, living on an equal footing with everyone. This is the law of mutual guarantee (Arvut) implemented in corporeal form. We are obliged to it not by the socialist system or philosophical convictions, but by the law of nature, which we must fulfill. If we do not fulfill it, then it will be very bad for us and we will still be forced to obey, but only by receiving blows. We have the opportunity to walk in the path of the light (Achishena).

It is predicted that in fifty years the Earth will be lifeless and burned out: there will be no ozone, no oxygen, no life. But we should not worry about the ozone layer—leave this concern to the Creator. We need to take care of implementing the laws that we are able to fulfill, that is, the law of love of one’s neighbor. By this, we will put all of nature in order.

Over the coming years, we will witness how all our attempts to normalize the environment by taking care of flowers, trees, plants, and disappearing coral reefs, and prohibiting fishing are useless. We can decide that from today onward we will not do anything that could harm the globe, and tomorrow we will discover more and more problems: the financial crisis, the collapse of society.

Nature must lead us to the decision to unite. Therefore, we will suffocate without oxygen, burn under holes in the ozone layer, suffer from volcanic eruptions and hurricanes in order to realize that there is no choice, that only through our connection can we calm nature.

Humanity is the highest level of existence in nature. We are all connected together and if we reach balance on the human level, then all other levels will balance automatically, from top to bottom. But if hatred and confusion reign on our top level, then no matter how much we invest in the lower levels trying to preserve the environment, nothing will help. No matter how many committees we open or how much money we invest, everything will be useless. Only one thing will help: the mutual guarantee between us, the correct social education.3

Study The Descent In The State Of Ascent

laitman_962.1In the state of ascent, we should study the previous descent, and in the state of descent, we should imagine ascent. The whole world is a concealment and that is why it is called so: “Olam” – world, from the word “Alama” – concealment. Therefore, we need to try to imagine ourselves in the upper, exalted state. After all, no changes occurred in all of reality beside the concealment through which the Creator plays with us. He intentionally created the concealment so that we would appreciate the revelation, the state of adhesion with the Creator and existence in the world of absolute good.

We must make efforts to return to this picture by removing the veil from our eyes and from our senses. This concealment is called the evil inclination, our egoism. If a person tries to feel like he or she is in a perfect state, as if in the end of correction, yearning for the revelation of this state with one’s entire being, then one advances to it.

Then we would have more strength, energy, and uplifted spirit to reach the state of truth, that is, the revelation of the fact that there is none else besides the Creator, good that does good, who fills the entire universe. We are in adhesion and connection with Him, and only some cloud obscures our senses and does not let us feel it.

We should not give in to this concealment, the egoistic fog, deliberately created by the Creator, but rather we should try to dispel it. We seek to lift the veil from our eyes and senses in order to feel corrected, connected with each other by love within which the Creator and our connection with Him are revealed to the same extent to which we are connected with each other. We should live so that through the concealment we would reveal the good by dispelling the fog and removing the veil of concealment.1

If concealment disappeared and the Creator were revealed, we would become angels, animals, instinctively fulfilling the laws of nature, the orders of the Creator. Concealment helps us become human beings, rise to the degree above animals, because it does not let us keep the laws of the Creator unconsciously, but makes us live according to our own laws of concealment. That is why in revelation, we ourselves should bring back the concealment in order to remain separated from the Creator and keep His laws not instinctively but above the concealment for the sake of the greatness of the Creator.

Concealment turns into our screen above which we yearn to resemble (Edomeh) the Creator and then become human, Adam. The Creator does not force us to do this—we ourselves want to become like the Creator. Concealment turns into both the concealing screen and the revealing screen for us.2

Nothing Is Worse Than Indifference

laitman_259.02Indifference is a result of the discrepancy of properties. Indifference is given to a person so he discovers who he really is without influence from above or the influence of the group. Through the group, I also receive influence from above because only through the group can I connect with the Creator and awaken His influence by myself.

Indifference is the most difficult thing. It testifies to the fact that a person has not established a devoted connection with the group, and through it, with the Creator. The chain: “Israel, the Torah, and the Creator” does not work, and therefore, indifference appears. There is nothing worse than that. Even conflict or disagreement is better, because it is at least a scrutiny. Indifference prevents you from any kind of scrutiny and one can get stuck in it for years.

Then awakening will come because a person is not alone, but is a part of a broken system. If other souls connected with the root of his soul begin to change and correct themselves, then they awaken him. He may even give up on spiritual advancement, but he suddenly wakes up because others need his presence and participation in reaching correction.

At the lowest level, indifference manifests in the fact that a person falls into this world and is satisfied with it, egotistically enjoying his life. He is only concerned with material fulfillment and becomes indifferent to spiritual advancement. The point in the heart stops shining because a person has not made enough of an effort to connect with his friends, with the teacher, and with the method.

Pride disallowed his connection to others. He felt stronger and smarter than others and it knocked him down. A person can invest tremendous energy in material matters, but can completely cool down to spirituality. It seems to him that he will succeed and earn a fortune, and this is a huge obstacle.

The group is obliged to sustain a sense of equality in each member. Although we are all different—some are more intuitive, others more knowledgeable—we all should be on an equal footing with no advantage of one over the others. The group must help a person on this point or his pride will grow and deflect him from the path. This is called “rescuing him from prison.”

He can feel at his best and completely fine, confident, and strong—and this is the egoistic prison. Because of this, he finds himself in a turbulent stream, carrying him to a high waterfall where he will be smashed into pieces.

Indifference is a very important feeling because it shows how much I lack the greatness of the Creator. I must therefore increase the importance of all the resources: the group, the teacher, the books, and the method. Indifference and even rejection constantly appear and we must overcome them, working in such a way. These are necessary stages (blows) on the path.1

Restriction And Blow

laitman_213Restriction (Tzimtzum) is when I close my desire, disallowing myself to receive pleasure, like a baby who tightly squeezes his mouth shut and refuses to eat. A blow (Bitush) already assumes a condition: if I have the opportunity to eat for the mother’s pleasure, then I will happily open my mouth. But I do not have such an opportunity right now, so what do I do? Help me, give me the desire to please you, and I will be happy to open myself to receive.

The restriction is an unconditional action, and the blow occurs on the condition that I am ready to take pleasure if there is an adhesion between us. In the blow, my goal is connection. While in restriction there is no goal of connecting, only preventing  yourself from receiving. I do not want any contact because I have no strength for more, only to restrict myself; otherwise, I will burn with shame.

The striking merger is already above shame. I no longer take shame into account, but only think about love and the connection between us, rising above selfishness. With a blow, I show that I am ready to receive a treat, not for myself, but only for the pleasure of the host.

At first we check our relationship with the host, and only when this spiritual connection of the heart has arisen can we translate it into action, and it descends into matter, into the desire to enjoy. Therefore, first of all, the decision is made in the Rosh of the Partzuf, in pure thoughts and feelings, disconnected from the clothing of the light in the desire, in matter. You can then perform this action, step by step, from easy to complex: the light of Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Haya, and Yechida.
