Build Happiness

294.2Question: There is a holiday called the International Day of Happiness. Probably the idea is that there is not much happiness and maybe you can celebrate somehow in one day. It is a fact that people are less and less happy. How do you think one can become happy?

Answer: I do not think that is possible.

You can only build or create happiness. There is relative happiness when I give way to my life partner, and he gives way to me, when we think about each other so that the other will be happy; it is all about the little things. And just like that, we gradually get used to wishing others happiness every minute, every half hour, every hour.

Expression of Slander in Everyday Life

599.02Question: You have said that thoughts have more power than words. However, in the case of slander, we see that if a person expresses it aloud, the punishment for it is much harsher than for slander that slips through one’s mind. Why is it so?

Answer: Because in this way he spreads his point of view that he has no right to spread regardless of whether he is right or wrong. And for this he must be punished.

Question: Doesn’t it spread through thoughts?

Answer: No, ordinary people do not spread it through thoughts. Slander manifests through their actions, through everyday relations, but for the most part through speech.

Yielding that Does Not Lead to a Common Connection

627.2Yielding [on the part of the husband or wife] is not regarded as love in wholeness, for the one who yields always waits for when he will regain the power of control (Rabash, Article 240, “Discernments in States”).

Yielding, which does not lead to absolute connection, is called imperfect. Therefore, such a connection is also not considered perfect; it lacks love.

Love is a state with similar aspirations on both sides and both spouses assume they are aiming toward a common center where they merge and achieve perfection.

Question: How does the yielding that Rabash talks about differ from concessions, which you mentioned? Is it some other function?

Answer: Concessions can be made out of love or can be based on other calculations. Any calculations in yielding, other than love, are not good.

The Unique Attitude Toward Literacy

270Comment: In ancient times many people did not know how to read. Apart from Jews, virtually no one had books.

My Response: But the Torah does not address other nations. It was written in Hebrew. Since then, nothing has changed, not a single letter or shape. A unique book called Tikkun Sofrim allows you to check texts.

People who copied the Torah first had to study the shapes of the letters and correct spelling. Therefore, everything stayed the same for generations. If you find a book written 2,000 years ago, the letters will have the same shape today.

Comment: Other nations did not teach children to read and write until almost the 19th century.

My Response: Yes, but it was not like that for the Jews. Their children started studying at three years old and even earlier. Usually, a school was located in the house of one of the teachers.

Comment: That is why we envy Jews; they are so bright.

My Response: This is not intelligence; it is simply working on yourself. In earlier times, there were practically no other books. Therefore, people knew the Torah by heart. This is an entirely different attitude to life than the current one.

Question: What mission did women perform if only boys were studying?

Answer: Women practically could not read and only listened to conversations held for them.

Question: But at the same time, the wisdom of a Jewish woman is unique. I have a feeling that she is very different from others.

Answer: Yes, but not because they studied a lot. Of course, they knew by heart what was written in the Torah. This is how the Creator decreed it and how they carried it out for thousands of years. This approach led to notable development in people’s memory and attitude toward writing, science, and nature.

Start-Stop Movement

41.01Question: How do we quickly skip over unclear states of fogginess on the spiritual path?

Answer: If you know that everything you go through is intended only to compel you toward greater integration, then you can quickly overcome any state. You can go through a hundred states per minute and fly over all the bumps as if gliding.

My Comment: But you’ve said that a person transitions from state to state so quickly and does not even realize which one he’s in.

Answer: No this is incorrect. If I don’t understand, then what is the point of going through them? I need to understand, grasp, and feel each of the states, but all this happens in a fraction of a second, you could say, or even beyond time.

You feel yourself existing in this moment and in a certain state. That is, in relation to the purpose of creation and the correct integration into the spiritual system with your freewill, you feel where you are approaching this system or moving away from it.

It is such a start-stop movement. There is no calculation going on here; I will do it one way or another. No! It is simple, forward-backward, backward-forward. You move forward, then you are pulled back, and then you move forward and you are pulled back. All the time you move like that, like along a triangular saw; you’re lowered down, you are moving further forward, then you’re lowered down, you are moving further forward, and again you’re lowered down.

Question: But how can you determine whether you come out of this state or not? Where is the beginning and the end, and aren’t you stuck for a long time?

Answer: The fact is that when there are sensations, the brain should not work because we are desire, not reason. If I feel and that feeling is sufficient for me, my brain practically does not get engaged.

Why does a person rest when he is at home in his armchair, in familiar surroundings? He does not need to activate the brain. His feelings are activated, although, on a very small level, and that’s it. As soon as there is a sensory disturbance, the brain immediately switches to high gear.

So that What You Read Enters Your Heart

165Question: It is said that after a person has seen certain words of the Torah in the book and memorized them, what entered the mind is already damaged. What does it mean?

Answer: It means that a person interferes with his feelings in the text.

Question: It appears that we need another influence from the book every time. And there is no way we can act differently?

Answer: You can, but it is not easy. Even in a person, you can see how when saying something he repeats what he saw, heard, and perceived the first time.

Question: How do you ensure that what you read enters your heart and does not require you to be impressed by a primary source every time?

Answer: You must move forward in connection with your friends because it continually cleanses you.

Come in Peace, Leave in Peace

562.02Question: It is said that when a person completes the work and converts the left line into holiness, he says to the angels: go away in peace. Does he say this to both angels or only to the evil one?

Answer: To both because each stage begins from a neutral state. Both angels teach us to approach the Creator.

The right line represents the good angel, the left line represents evil, and the middle line represents the man himself, who will merge with the Creator.

Question: Why is it said: go away in peace and come in peace?

Answer: Because we want all our problems to be solved in the middle line, which is called Shalom (peace) from the word “Shlemut” (perfection).

Be In Joy In Any State

624.01Question: Should the recognition that we work in Lo Lishma (in order to receive) be accompanied by joy?

Answer: In every state we should be in joy, even when working in Lo Lisma because we are doing the work of the Creator.

Question: How can one be in joy when the recognition of evil increases literally every day?

Answer: Rejoice in the fact that the Creator shows you this, that you receive recognition of evil from Him, and ask Him to correct the evil.

Two Channels for Receiving Information

209There are two channels in a person for receiving information. The written Torah is an awakening from above, and the oral Torah is awakening from below.

Both channels instruct a person on what to do in order to advance.

Gradually by studying this even without specifying which part it is, written or oral, we are still moving forward.

The written Torah is what we read in the sources, and the oral Torah is what our sages transmitted to us orally. They conveyed the information, but prohibited writing it down.

Question: Do we understand correctly that the written Torah is perceived by the mind, and the oral Torah by the heart?

Answer: In some ways, you are correct. But in both of them, there are both feeling and mind.

Question: Which Torah do we engrave in the heart to serve as a key for adhesion with the Creator?

Answer: The written one.
