Along the Steps of the Spiritual Ladder

112Question: How can past efforts be revived? If a person is in a different state now, returning to the same effort he once made is impossible.

Answer: No, if a person climbs the steps of one’s attainment, that is, the steps of the spiritual ladder, then all one’s efforts are also on it, and a person rises precisely thanks to them.

It is as if the person solves problems, like in school during lessons: one solves a problem, goes up to the next level, solves another one, and goes up another level. This is how it happens.

Make Your Will as His Will

276.01Question: What builds a screen in us that can receive pleasure from the Creator? Is it the experience of previous states in which we received from Him, losing connection with Him, or a discipline of the mind?

Answer: The screen builds the right connection in me between my desire and the desire of the Creator. It is said about this: “Make your desire like His so He would make His desire like yours.” It is based on reason.

Question: Is the desire of the soul the same desire or different?

Answer: No, these are the same desires. When you peel all the husks from them, they combine, and you will feel that this is your spiritual Kli. The light that enters it will be the appearance of the Creator to you.

Question: How can we understand how the desire of the soul differs from the desire of the Creator?

Answer: The desire of the soul is your desire to merge with Him. And the Creator’s desire is the same toward you.

Flirting With the Creator

527.03Question: Pleasure comes from the Creator. How can I strengthen my connection with the Creator at this point so that I bestow to Him rather than receive for myself?

Answer: If you restrict your connection with the Creator, meaning you do not sever the connection, but simply do not receive pleasure and stop yourself in order to establish your relationship, you will not receive anything until you have established it.

But once you do the calculation and see that you can create a condition for the Creator to receive contentment from your action, you start implementing it.

Question: How can I properly establish our relationship so that the Creator receives contentment from my action now?

Answer: To do this, you need to stop receiving from the Creator what He wants to give, pause, and feel in what state you are with the Creator. You make a restriction (Tzimtzum) on your desire to receive and see how you can be connected with the Creator without breaking the conditions of the restriction.

Question: Will He give me the understanding of how to stay connected with Him without breaking this connection if I make a restriction on myself?

Answer: You have to twist it this way and that. This is called “flirting” or “dancing” with the Creator. There are various terms describing the movement of creation relative to the Creator and vice versa. Overall, it is like a dance.

Question: How does this flirting manifest? Is it in a request and in a prayer?

Answer: Yes, essentially, the Creator feels it.

What Is a Spiritual Screen?

232.05Question: What does spiritual screen (Masach) mean? What is this setting within me that allows me to make the right choice?

Answer: A screen means that I proceed not according to my own opinion, but above it. It is based on this principle that I judge, measure, and weigh the possibilities of receiving and bestowing. This is called working with a screen.

Question: Can we say that the screen is what we study in Kabbalah when building a Partzuf?

Answer: When we place a screen against the light, it is much larger than we can imagine. The desire that is revealed under the screen is also immense.

We reject the upper light, we do not want to receive it. Only after shielding ourselves with the screen can we decide how to receive the light, how much, for what purpose, and why.

Question: Does this mean that in any case we must choose to work above reason?

Answer: Of course, on all spiritual degrees we are obliged to work with faith above reason.

Different Levels of Souls

522.01Comment: There are different souls, i.e., those who are awakened by the Creator and there are those who must awaken through us. It seems like this group coincides with those who came to Abraham in Ancient Babylon and became the people of Israel.

My Response: You do not need to elaborate on this because you will not understand anything anyway since you do not attain these souls at the level at which they were. It is useless to assume anything. You will only confuse yourself with incorrect conclusions.

It has nothing to do with those souls. They have done their job and continue their correction at other levels. After all, souls are at all levels of the spiritual world and our world. There are only those who have never been subject to correction.

Once we were all in the common soul of Adam, then we fell to the level of our world, and today we begin our ascent. We should not be confused with the souls of Abraham’s time or others. Someday, you will reveal this in practice, not based on your imagination.

When receiving an awakening from above, you need to know what to do with it: unite with each other, attract the upper light, etc. The closer you become to each other, the more actively you will realize your new properties.

In these properties, you will attain new states up to those upper ones in which the souls used to be or are now, for example, Abraham, Terah, and others. These are high levels.

Questions about Spiritual Work—144

630.2Question: Is the scheme of our relationships with the Creator a chain of states toward bestowal? How can we hold onto all these states?

Answer: There is no need to hold onto anything. Take one of these states and try to correct it. Then the next one, then another, and another. That is all.

Question: If a person is in a state of righteousness, united with the Creator, and needs nothing more, can the Creator leave him alone and not demand more effort?

Answer: This is the worst punishment from the Creator. Do not stay in these states.

Question: On one hand, we learn that a person must come to the knowledge of their insignificance, that they are an egoist. On the other hand, it writes that we are created in the likeness of the Creator. The question is: when can a person stop revealing this evil and start seeking good in themselves and others? How can one get out of this point of misery?

Answer: When a person finishes exploring and correcting oneself and achieves final correction, he sees who he was when he started the work of correction and what he has achieved now.

Question: It writes that one must love the Creator with both inclinations. In the good inclination, we resemble the Creator’s attributes and it is easy for us to love the Creator. But how can one love the Creator with the evil inclination?

Answer: It will come, do not worry. First correct what you have.

Where Do I Objectively Exist?

539Question: Essentially, do I have to absorb absolutely the entire world?

Answer: It is already in you. Let us say you are sitting in front of your computer right now. In it you can see the whole world. If you see it on the screen, it means it is in your computer system; otherwise, you would not see it.

But the problem is whether anything is outside of you at all. Maybe not. I see what arises in my feelings. But what is behind these feelings? I do not know. Maybe I am in some kind of matrix that projects some images and sensations to me, and makes some suggestions to me. I have nothing but my feelings.

Where do they come from? Maybe now I am in an unconscious state, and this whole world manifests itself in my sick imagination: I am talking to you, I exist, and so on.

But in fact, you are missing one more state in relation to which you could measure this.

Comment: You once gave an example that there is a computer system that includes the processor itself and a screen on which all the processes occurring in the computer are projected. It seems to us we see something. In fact, we do not feel the processes themselves.

My Response: This is why we need to get to this processor, to all its internal parts. They are our system, only they are hidden from us.

When I get to them, I will find out why it all exists, and at the same time I will discover that it was created for my sake. There I will find my eternal, perfect state, I will be able to control myself and not be controlled.

Today I automatically react when someone evokes certain feelings and thoughts in me. I myself am this screen, this guidance, and I have no opportunity to enter an objective state. After all, the fact that I am now talking and in contact with you is all some kind of reaction to what is in front of me.

Where do I really separately and objectively exist?

We do not have this. This is what we need to achieve.

We Have No Other Way Out

294.2This means that each and every one in Israel would take upon himself to care and work for each member of the nation, to satisfy all their needs, no less than the measure imprinted in him to care for his own needs (Baal HaSulam, “The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee]”).

We must always compare taking care of ourselves to caring for others: how much does striving for oneself differ from striving for others, what is the difference between them, and can we somehow equalize the desire to care for others with the care for oneself. That is a specific and uncomplicated task. Defining it is very simple, but carrying it out is almost impossible.

Mutual guarantee (Arvut), described by Baal HaSulam is like a fantasy. We understand that it is practically unattainable and beyond human capability. I cannot think about others, not even those close to me, in the way I do about myself. It is impossible. The task set before us is, in fact, not achievable. So, what are we discussing here?

Once the whole nation unanimously agreed and said, “We will do and we will hear,” each member of Israel became responsible that no member of the nation will lack anything. Only then did they become worthy of receiving the Torah

It is enough if we understand that we have no other way out. And we do not need another way out because, in reality, this is the highest goal that can be in our lowly, insignificant world. Therefore, if we agree to live in mutual guarantee, we will begin to draw upon ourselves special upper forces that will lead us to this state.

However, no one says we must become altruists and kind, love everyone, and connect with everyone. That is not serious. It says we must realize our current nature and the state we must reach that nature pushes us to.

Look at what is happening in the world. Nature pushes us toward complete unification. We may not understand this, but in principle, this is what lies ahead of us. If we want to live on our small Earth, we must become one unified whole. Otherwise, we cannot survive.

By realizing this, we will become suitable for receiving the Torah and for receiving the upper light that will change our nature and drive us toward collective unification.

The world is experiencing more division, fragmentation, and distancing every day, and accordingly, more confusion about where it exists, why, and how. Humanity feels the egoism that seems to play with it from within and acts accordingly.
