Purim—Concealment and Revelation

200.01Darkness is the Median (Babylonian) exile, which the people of Israel brought upon themselves because the Creator (Zeir Anpin) fell into slumber.

And the sinner Haman, a great astrologer, cast lots (Pur) to determine fate.

For Haman and his ten sons represent the ten Klipot (impure forces), and therefore he knew that the Creator was asleep and that His higher governance was not protecting the people of Israel (those who seek the Creator).

Thus, Haman thought that the time had come to destroy the people of Israel.

Haman represents all our desire to receive, which stand in opposition to the entire light of Hochma, and he knows that this light must now be revealed.

He just doesn’t know that this can happen only through the middle line, and then it is canceled, which leads to the transition to the state of the first restriction (Tzimtzum Aleph).

Malchut unites with Zeir Anpin in the middle line, they ascend to Bina and reach the state of the end of correction.

To destroy the people of Israel means to destroy the intention for the sake of bestowal, which prevents receiving the light of Hochma egoistically.

Mordechai represents the intention to bestow, but if he acts alone, without Haman’s desires, then it is merely bestowal for the sake of bestowal, meaning he blocks the light of Hochma and does not allow it to be revealed.

If a person does not work in the middle line, then even their best actions of bestowal close the path of development. This is why Mordechai must be connected with Haman.

When the conflict begins between them, between the intention to bestow and the egoistic desire, it becomes clear how they can or cannot unite.

There is an intention for the sake of bestowal, through which Haman’s desires can be used, but these desires themselves will not be fulfilled. This is why the confrontation between Haman and Mordechai occurs. It is about how a person can create the right connection between two opposing forces, opposite intentions—what battles, confusion, and doubts await us on the path of correction until we find the right method.

The Scroll of Esther (Megillat Ester) tells us about this.

Depending on the Level of Development

281.02Question: Can a child be provided with the information that an adult possesses?

Answer: It is absolutely impossible. First you must develop the child to the level of an adult, to the level of the Creator. Therefore, as Maimonides writes, things should be explained to beginners gradually, in small portions, until they grow and can properly absorb the information. This is the mastery of the teacher, on one hand.

On the other hand, it is not so bad if everyone hears this information because everyone will still feel it better or worse, closer or further from oneself. So in a lesson, both beginners and people with serious experience and understanding can sit together and each one will understand something.

But there are some feelings and knowledge that should not be conveyed to beginners because they will not perceive them anyway. Strangely enough in Kabbalah, there is no concept of “forbidden” as in our world. Everyone thinks that there are prohibitions and secrets there.

There are no secrets at all. Both an underdeveloped person and a more developed one understand everything at their own level. The development of each one, in principle, is limited by himself. And there is nothing you can do about it.

I cannot whisper some secret into your ear; you simply will not understand it. It is like whispering some human idea to a cow. What will it do? Wiggle its ear and nothing more.

Therefore everything depends on the development of a recipient.

The Wisdom of Perception

276.04Question: The Creator creates a created being and develops it Himself by making sure it develops a desire to attain the upper and become independent. But if all of this comes from the Creator…?

Answer: You can ask a million questions, and every second, new ones will arise within you. The answers will not satisfy you because the only real answer can be in your feelings.

We are created as beings of feeling, of desire, and it is this desire that we must fulfill. The intellect alone will not suffice. We cannot calm ourselves with logical arguments. That is why Kabbalah does not engage in this. Instead it shows a person on how he or she can develop oneself to a level where the person can feel a spiritual state.

Thus we must go through all the states given to us, and only then will we understand what it truly is. Another person’s knowledge will give us nothing.

Everything we study is not in order to know but to change ourselves, to create new sensations and the possibility of perception. And nothing else!

Kabbalah is the wisdom of perception! “Kabbalah” means reception, perception.

Develop Yourself

209Question: The material we study begins to take effect only when the light reaches a person, and then, naturally, all the sources begin to open: The Study of the Ten Sefirot, The Book of Zohar, and others. Does everything depend solely on the light?

Answer: Nothing depends on the light. Everything depends on your desire, ability, and understanding of the influence of the light, which exists around you eternally and perfectly. I mean the desire to draw the light, work with it, and become like it. To draw the light means to be similar to the Creator.

Comment: You said that we should not try to intellectually understand the material we read since logical reasoning alone will never lead us to comprehension.

My Response: Never! You will never reach understanding logically. You must develop a different logic, additional perceptions. This does not mean rejecting anything corporeal, but rather, you must develop yourself.

You need to build additional systems of perception, analysis, synthesis, and decision-making within yourself that are similar to the spiritual ones. This is what it means to become like the Creator.

When you do this through Kabbalah, which was created solely for this purpose of developing additional capabilities in a person, then you begin to feel Him. The more you expand, construct new inner abilities, connections, perceptions, and analyses, the more you feel the Creator. Then you start to understand what Kabbalah speaks of, and Kabbalistic books become a description of what you personally experience.

A Kabbalistic book turns into a living manual for you. It tells you what to do.

Question: Suppose I travel to Paris as a tourist and see Notre Dame or some other landmark, which gives me certain impressions. How does this work in spirituality?

Answer: In spirituality, your impressions come from inner attainment: What is this object? What is this phenomenon? How does it affect me? How can I best perceive it? How is it connected to other phenomena? And so on.

Essentially, what does spirituality mean? It is the attainment of the Creator, the only thing in which we exist. To the extent that I develop myself, I begin to understand, feel, and study Him. But in studying, I can perceive Him only to the extent that I become like Him.

Therefore, all of Kabbalah is structured around reaching similarity to the Creator, around becoming equivalent to Him. This is the goal of everything we do. To attain complete equivalence with Him means to fully attain Him.

Understanding the causes and sources of all existence brings you immense fulfillment. It fills all your desires, needs, thoughts, intellect, and emotions. There is great pleasure in this knowledge and connection. Connection itself brings immense fulfillment because it is built on the connection of opposites, on resolving contradictions. Suddenly, they align and form a single, wonderful whole.

The Meaning of the Creator’s Game

276.02Question: What is the meaning of this game that the Creator has initiated?

Answer: The meaning of the Creator’s game is to create a creation equal to Himself, which will attain the state of the Creator, His level, and complete similarity to Him, and in this will be totally fulfilled since He instilled these desires in us.

We are meant to become like Him: to achieve absolute, mutual fulfillment of one another. Thus, the entire program of creation is realized within the framework known to us.

We rely on what the Kabbalists say, that the Creator has a need to create, a positive need, a desire to bestow. In our world, this can be likened to a woman’s desire to have children, which is an inner longing to care for and give. Naturally, in our world, this is an egoistic desire, but in the Creator, it is altruistic.

It stems from the nature of the good that does good. That is why He created beings—to lead them to goodness. This is what we can comprehend. One can philosophize endlessly about it, but Kabbalah teaches that it must be attained. For one who attains, everything becomes clear. And the one who merely philosophizes is left with thoughts that his fishes out from under his hair—nothing more.

That is why Kabbalah is categorically against it. It is a highly practical science meant to lead a person to receive the magnificent fulfillment that awaits him in the attainment of the Creator, in becoming like Him.

Comment: You speak about this so sadly.

My Response: On the contrary, it is something enormous. I simply do not know how to express it, there are no words for it. I am not sad. Quite the opposite, wonderful feelings arise in me that overwhelm me because what has been given to a person is a great thing, such a goal, such an opportunity!
