“2022 Was Bad, 2023 Will Be No Better” (Times of Israel)

Michael Laitman, On The Times of Israel: “2022 Was Bad, 2023 Will Be No Better

Next week begins the year 2023. When we look at 2022, there is very little to be pleased with. Above all, the war in Ukraine has disrupted the world on many levels. It has devastated one country, exhausted another, sent energy prices skyrocketing around the world, and disrupted the economy of the entire planet. Even without the war, the economy was in poor shape, and industry has not recovered from the impact of Covid, but the two blows combined were a hard hit on all of us. Additionally, abysmal international relations, extreme weather events, spreading substance abuse, and social degeneration have all contributed to a well-founded sensation that things are going downhill fast, and on a global level.

When a person is sick, the most important task, and often the biggest challenge, is to achieve a quick and clear diagnosis. Usually, once you diagnose the problem, the prognosis is clear and the possible treatment plans are easier to put together.

But for some reason, as a society, despite all the symptoms pointing to the pathogen being animosity among all parts of humanity, we keep ignoring it. Instead of looking for the cause, we insist on trying to alleviate the symptoms. Not surprisingly, the symptoms are getting worse, and the disease of animosity is spreading and intensifying. When it reaches the level where people cannot tolerate each other’s existence, World War III will break out.

When you think about it, it could have been funny if the joke were not on us. Educated grownups, in charge of the fate of humanity, are bickering like kindergarten children in a sandbox. Their teacher is trying to make them behave, to be kind and considerate, explaining that they will all benefit from being kinder to each other, but the kids are obtuse, obstinate, and mainly coldhearted.

In such a state, the teacher will have no choice but to punish the children, namely the nations, even harder in the next class, the class of 2023. China, for example, where Covid originated, has had to abandon its draconian “zero Covid” policy, and reports from there indicate that tens of millions are catching the virus each day, and hospitals are collapsing. Millions are expected to die in the next few months.

The war in Ukraine does not seem like it is going to end soon, Ukrainian energy infrastructure has been all but demolished, while Russia, the demolisher, is depleting its already worn-thin reserves through mandatory drafting. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled the country in an effort to dodge being sent as cannon fodder to Ukraine.

The economy, too, does not seem to be recovering, and we can expect 2023 to be a tough year on that end, too.

And perhaps as a prelude, North America spent Christmas fighting a combination of freezing temperatures, gale force winds, and heavy snow, causing millions to spend the holiday without power, heat, or a way to escape. The death toll of this “bomb cyclone,” as meteorologists refer to it, is as yet unknown, but it is already known that dozens of people simply froze to death in stranded cars, while national guards are going door to door in many cities looking for casualties who died of hypothermia in their own homes.

Since we are not learning, I think that just as teachers do with obnoxious and rebellious children, the first thing we need to do in order to begin to remedy the situation is silence everyone, and tie everyone’s hands so they cannot keep fighting. I am not saying this is easy, and I am not sure who should or can do this, but if we want to be able to reason with each other, then any country that behaves like a bully should be disconnected from the family of nations, clear and simple. Only fear will force countries to think twice before they initiate aggression.

At the same time, we should continue to propagate the message that only if we work together will we improve our situation. We should show, however we can, that aggression does not pay.

Lastly, we should try to show, as much as we can, the benefits of cooperation. At the very least, people need to have an alternative to aggression in mind. Perhaps if people suffer long enough, their minds will open to other modes of action besides brute force, and to other paradigms besides “survival of the fittest.”

I am not optimistic; I do not feel that humanity is ready to listen, but as long as we are able, it is our duty to insist that there are alternatives to war and hatred, alternatives that benefit everyone rather than inflict anguish and destruction on humanity.

“Did Noah’s Ark Ever Exist?” (Times of Israel)

Michael Laitman, On The Times of Israel: “Did Noah’s Ark Ever Exist?

Turkey inaugurated a new visitor center named Noah’s Ark. The center on Mount Ararat was built by donations from Jews, Christians and Muslims from all over the world. The center displays finds and fossils discovered at the site. The search for the ark is very exciting for many, and it indeed raises the question: did Noah’s Ark ever exist?

Even if we discovered a few of its boards and could seemingly prove that it existed, what would that give us?

The main takeaway from the story of Noah’s Ark for us today is to understand that we are also on the verge of a great flood, and we have the ability to prevent it from happening.

We prevent a great deluge from coming our way by listening to what the Creator says, or to put it differently, by obeying nature’s laws, which ultimately means that we need to positively connect.

Negative human connections bring about every blow that we receive from nature. And on the contrary, if we relate favorably to one another, we manage to prevent natural disasters and other blows.

How does this work? There are laws of nature that stop us from knocking the system of nature out of balance, which we do mainly through our negative human relations. Nature has four levels—the still, vegetative, animate and human—and the human level is nature’s highest qualitative level. What we determine at the human level, in our connections to each other, unequivocally determines what will happen throughout nature in relation to us.

We should thus learn how to become more attentive to what really matters in our world today—to develop positive human connections as a means of reaching balance with nature’s laws—and by doing so, we will find that we not only protect ourselves from natural disasters and several other blows, but moreover, we will open the gates to a new peaceful and harmonious world the likes of which we have yet to experience.

Undesirable Delay

747.01The four types of exile that the Jewish people went through are identical to the basic formula of nature “Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey. According to this formula of the gradual development of desire, the development of any phenomenon in nature takes place.

Moreover, the first exile was not felt as an exile at all, just as people at the dawn of the existence of mankind did not feel slavery in the slave-owning order. Then the desire was so small that if a person somehow satisfied it, this was already good. And people agreed with that.

Then the desire developed more and more, more freedom was needed, and more of our own incorporation in life, development, and communication, to the point that nature made us completely integrally interconnected with each other, but we have not yet come to this.

We are late regarding this formula, this condition of nature, to develop us to the necessary degree. Like a newborn baby—what is he, who is he? He does not communicate with anyone; he has no group or social motives. And then he gradually begins to feel that he needs society, family, and everything else.

All our progress is based on the fact that we gradually begin to feel ourselves in our natural egoism in exile from the upper state, from the next degree.

There are degrees of inanimate, vegetative, and animate matter and “man” in nature. Kabbalah talks about how we gradually move from the degree of animals to the degree of man. This is the next degree, but we have not reached it yet. All of humanity is at the animate level of development because it cares only about how to live, feed itself, and raise children.

Influence of the Future Light

766.9Question: How did you sense that you had found your teacher? How does it happen?

Answer: It is impossible to describe. I see that people who are with me when I give talks, they too begin to feel something because it is an influence of the upper light.

When it acts on a Kli (vessel) that has not completely opened it causes a person to feel emotional and increases sensitivity within a person. It is called a small state. It is like a child who begins to cry because he is unable to define his state or absorb within himself something that should happen to him. The same is occurring with us.

Question: Does it mean that the sensation that it will certainly happen here with this teacher at this place depends on the influence of the light? Is the future light acting upon the person this way?

Answer: Of course! The surrounding light (Ohr Makif) is the future light. This is why it is called surrounding. After all, it is still unable to come into you. Since you are so little in relation to it, you feel that you have found something! But what, you do not know.

Question: Meaning, as if the light is saying, “Hold on to me, there will be something here”?

Answer: Yes, of course. With that, the person cannot vanish anymore. It is already impossible to break away from this source.

To Deceive the Teacher

549.02Question: Is the perception of your student’s corporeal life as open to you as the spiritual one?

Answer: No, the corporeal life of my student is not the field in which I have contact with him. Absolutely not. I do not need to know what a person is doing. I feel what is happening to him in his spiritual development but not in the corporeal.

Question: And you may not even know where he is at the moment, for example, on the road or in a certain place?

Answer: I do not know that.

Question: So, your student can deceive you by saying: “I was there just now,” but in reality…

Answer: Physically? Of course he can! After all, it is not his lowest spiritual level, which is in me. Only his spiritual stage is in me.

Question: By committing some kind of deception in relation to the teacher, does the student thereby affect his spirituality?

Answer: Undoubtedly, he does.

Question: And do you feel how it is changing?

Answer: I do not know why, but the fact that his fall is happening, I see it, I feel it.

Question: And what is deception in itself?

Answer: Deception is a purposeful discrepancy between the lower and the higher or between you and a friend when you can get closer and deliberately do not go for it. This is a very bad action because it causes double distancing.

That is, you put the connection that you could make between yourself and others, not just at a distance, but in opposition to each other. This is the cunning of the serpent.

Question: But how can a person protect himself so as not to carry out this deception?

Answer: Only by the greatness of the goal.

Is Kabbalah Really that Simple?

508.1Comment: According to the classification of a cult, it is considered that the teaching of the group is extremely simple and explains any problem.

My Response: There is nothing simple in Kabbalah because everything we study must go through our feelings. We must attain this by changing our qualities, and only when they change can we say that we have learned some aspect, some phenomenon.

That is, it is a long process of changing the person himself. Nothing in Kabbalah can be studied without changing oneself.

The fact is that science is not when I study some extraneous phenomena, but when I study what is happening within me because the world is felt inside a person. There is no world outside of a person.

Our knowledge and attainment are purely subjective, and therefore, only by changing all kinds of parameters in myself, can I begin to understand how I perceive the world, how I am arranged, and what the world I perceive is. Everything is only inside of me.

So, there is nothing simple here. Everything is built only on showing a person that he must begin to change in order to attain the real universe and the system of governance.

People who do not do this, do not change themselves, but only philosophize about it and attribute to Kabbalah everything that seems to them, because they do not attain it in themselves, from their own experience. Hence, they have an incorrect opinion about Kabbalah. They liken it to all kinds of other practices; they believe that it is slander, conspiracies, witchcraft, mysticism, Pulsa deNura, spells, and so on.

Basically, they attribute to Kabbalah something that has never been in it at all. In fact, a Kabbalist has no secrets, all he needs is to change himself, expand his sensations, feelings, and then he will perceive the true universe more and more, which is outside of us, but will be felt internally.

Kabbalah talks about how to change our senses with the help of restriction (screen, reflected light), spiritual attainment, how light (NRNHY) will gradually enter new senses, which are called KHB ZON, and so on.

“Israel Needs a Government of Tough but Equal Love”

From my Facebook page Michael Laitman 12/29/22

Today, December 29, 2022, is the first day of a new government in Israel. The past year has been horrific for Israel: Thirty Israelis were murdered by terrorists, far more than in previous years, inflation has risen, Israel’s international status has plummeted, teachers are quitting the education system in droves and no one is replacing them, division is spreading—between religious and secular, progressives and conservatives—and this is a very partial list.
Clearly, the new government will have a lot of fixing up to do.
The worst problem is that the outgoing government has given the feeling that no one is at the helm, and anyone can do whatever he or she wants. Not only has crime risen, but the audacity of criminals is beyond belief, committing crimes in broad daylight without even trying to hide their identity. The main problem, therefore, is one of governability, or rather, the lack thereof.
Accordingly, before anything else, the new government must make people realize that there is a new government in place, and it will not tolerate what the previous government tolerated. Deterrence must be elevated to much higher levels than the current one because at the moment, there isn’t any. When there is high deterrence, there are fewer crimes, less pressure on police, and as a result, better policing. If I had to sum up the new government’s task in two words, they would be law and order, and to that I might add, with a firm hand.
Yet, for all its significance, there is something that is just as important, yet totally ignored, but which the incoming government must develop: the one value that everyone avoids—national unity. In today’s Israel, everyone is busy proving that they are right and everyone else is wrong. The result is that no one is convinced, and everyone becomes more entrenched in their positions and adds hatred to their conviction. In such a state, any attempt to remedy the situation in Israel is hopeless from the get go.
The deepening division in Israeli society is not just another problem that the new government needs to tackle; it is the root cause of all the problems. Every single crisis that is currently affecting the lives of Israelis will vanish if there is a strong sense of social cohesion in Israel.
When there is mutual concern, there is no poverty. When there is cohesion, there is no division, and certainly no crime. When there are solidarity and unity, Israel’s military deterrence increases manyfold. Education will become better and more evenly dispersed when people care not only about their children’s schools but also about the Israeli education system as a whole.
When a government works to improve social cohesion and the well-being of the entire nation, rather than the current state where parties are concerned only with the sector that elected them, it is much easier to unite the people behind it. However, for this to happen, unity must be openly on the table as a top priority agenda item in the most important meetings: the ones where budgets are decided and laws are formulated.
Every nation has something called “national identity.” Israel’s must be “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the motto we had given to the world in antiquity, and we were commanded to live it out, to set an example. Love of others is the basis of our nation precisely because we emerged from alienation and hostility, and merited the status of a nation only once we triumphed over them. These days, when we are divided and hateful once again, we do not deserve the title, “nation.”
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the incoming government, and stress that it must show a firm hand and establish law and order, but not in order to oppress political rivals, but in order to be able to instill education toward unity, mutual responsibility, and concern for one another.

Double Emptiness

509And “he who has a hundred wants two hundred,” it follows that “One does not die with half one’s wishes in one’s hand” (Baal HaSulam, The Study of the Ten Sefirot, Part 1, “Inner Observation,” Chapter 4, Item 21).

We are arranged in such a way that we always run for a double reward, which constantly signals us from afar. Therefore, it turns out that we die without reaching it. This means that a person dies without getting even half of what he wished for.

Thus, they suffer from both sides: from the pain of increased motion, and from the pain of deficiency of possessions. That is, you suffer both from the fact that you have to move all the time and look for something, and from the fact that you are not fulfilled.

This is our life. In any case, we will be constantly running, constantly striving for something, and we will not be able to stop ourselves. But no matter what actions we take, we will still remain twofold empty.
