If You Unite…

938.07Comment: When you disseminate Kabbalah to the masses, what attracts people is your inner message.

My Response: This happens because I have this energy. People sense that there is an upper force in me. They perceive it, even if just slightly, and sense that knowledge, confidence, and inner light.

I am not boasting about it, but I also do not hide that they really sense all of this. In many, it provokes hatred; in others, respect, approval, or admiration. It makes no difference. The main thing is that it exists, and it is not merely the spark of a brilliant orator; after all, I do not speak Hebrew particularly well, and my manner is generally somewhat rough, with a strange, often off-putting sense of humor.

I craft my statements quite deliberately, even pointedly, specifically to shake a person up and make them feel uncomfortable to prompt them to engage their critical left line a bit. People simply recognize there is a profound logic here, not mine, of course.

By the way, by nature I am practically without any innate talents. The only thing speaking through me is what I have attained from my great teacher. Through my connection with him, I pass on to you what he receives from his teacher, and further, through the entire chain of Kabbalists.

I have simply been privileged to serve as a conduit, to “pour,” so to speak, information from myself into the common Kli. To the extent that you unite with one another, I am able to pour all of this into you.

Whether I am here or not does not matter. The absence of visual contact serves to give you the opportunity for even greater freedom of choice to unite with one another. If I am no longer present, it will simply mean that you have been granted an even greater measure of freedom of will, even greater responsibility to unite. And when you can do this, you will receive even more from me, just as I receive much more from my teacher than when he was physically next to me.

It is said that the righteous live more in their death than in their life. And therefore there is no difference whether I exist now or will not exist in your eyes. If you unite among yourselves, you will feel a spiritual abundance pouring into you, specifically from me, in an even greater measure.

When you are ready for the stage of uniting with one another, without me in greater freedom of choice, since there will no longer be my pressure or direct guidance, and you are able to bring this to fruition, then I will depart. From that point on, it will be entirely up to you whether you succeed in realizing this or not.

Question: Do you think that those external circles we are currently disseminating information to will continue to be drawn to this in the same way?

Answer: This depends on the extent to which you become a magnetic force, how much inner strength you possess (the kind I currently hold), and on your capacity serve as a source of that strength for all of humanity. If you remain in contact with me and allow this force to flow into you through me, you will begin to attract all of humanity. But all this must happen collectively, as a single, unified entity.

Question: Is it possible that we might fail to become a unified whole?

Answer: In that case the obligation would be shifted away from you and placed upon some other group; alternatively you could be compelled toward this unity through the path of suffering. You will be made to unite regardless, because this is the natural trajectory of evolution, the inevitable path leading to the revelation of that system, that state that exists in the world of infinity.

An Unbreakable Connection with the Group

938.04Question: The group is outside of me. That means I depend on something external. How can I make it so that it depends on me, and not on something external?

Answer: What exactly is it that you decide here? You choose the group and convince yourself that it is great, good, important, and one of a kind. Then what it gives you naturally becomes important and significant to you. In other words, you must humble yourself before the group, and the group must “advertise” to you what is necessary.

Question: And if I break the connection even for a moment? Is that it?

Answer: If you sever the connection, you are an “animal.” After all, your only choice is the choice of the group.

Comment: You once said that it does not matter which group you come to. You can always be inspired by it if it maintains the direction.

My Response: I said that one can feel an inner response even from a small group because it depends more on how much you humble yourself before it. This is more important. The group may consist of beginners who know nothing but are very inspired and want something. Then you are inspired by their inspiration.

How does a mother become inspired by her infant? Does the infant have any kind of desire? Here love comes into action, the sense of importance. The infant is more important to her than her own life. That is how nature is arranged. Any of their sounds is the whole world for her, and she desires nothing more than to listen to them and fulfill what they want. So does the size of the infant matter? No, what matters are importance, love, and significance.

Question: And if this is not there?

Answer: If it is not, then there is nothing to be done. It means there is no group, and you are in your own hands, that is, in the hands of your nature.

Under the Influence of Society

939.02It is known that one is always among people who have no connection to the work on the path of truth, but to the contrary, always resist those who walk on the path of truth. And since people’s thoughts mingle, the views of those who oppose the path of truth permeate those with some desire to walk on the path of truth.

Hence, there is no other solution but to establish a separate society for themselves, to be their framework, meaning a separate community that does not mingle with other people whose views differ from that society. And they should constantly evoke in themselves the issue of the purpose of society, so they will not follow the majority, because following the majority is our nature (Rabash, “Concerning the Importance of Society“).

On the spiritual path, everything happens differently than in other areas of human activity because here I must change myself, in other words, extract myself from an egoistic nature, and enter a new one.

This means that I have no other choice but to deliberately create an appropriate environment around myself where spiritual goals and ideals are elevated as much as possible, developed, and made obligatory for everyone. In such a setting, I can learn from this society and absorb a stronger influence from it than from all of humanity, and most importantly, greater than from my own egoism. Only then will I be able to somehow change myself.

Question: Rabash writes that a person who is among people unrelated to the spiritual path gradually adopts their views. Is a person really that weak?

Answer: It is not that a person is weak; he is simply raw material that is shaped by society. Whatever environment he inhabits, his thoughts will inevitably reflect that environment.

Comment: Kabbalists are often accused of being insular. For some reason, they give everyone that impression.

My Response: They evoke antagonism in others because the Kabbalistic method runs counter to human nature. This can be seen in how humanity relates to Jewish people and senses the seed of Kabbalah within them, even though Jews themselves are not aware of it.

Therefore I remain unperturbed by the fact that I arouse hatred in many people. What can be done? We will have to wait until they correct themselves and understand that there is no other way. I hope that with today’s pace of development, this will happen quickly.

The Wisdom of Kabbalah: From the Question to the Plan of Creation

252This wisdom is no more and no less than a sequence of roots that cascade by way of cause and consequence, following fixed, determined laws that interweave into a single, exalted goal described as “the revelation of His Godliness to His creatures in this world” (Baal HaSulam, “The Essence of the Wisdom of Kabbalah“).

At first glance, there is some confusion here. First of all, it is said that these roots spread and descend from top to bottom. Immediately following it is written that they are connected and aimed at one lofty goal, seemingly from the bottom up; the goal is the revelation of the Creator (above) to creation, to man (below) in this world.

How did the Kabbalists comprehend this whole system, and describe it to us so that we could use their books to reveal it ourselves?  In exactly the same way we do, but for them it was far more arduous. They had no teacher, and they did not have a group.

For many generations people have been looking for ways to reveal the upper force and what is truly happening in our world, what laws it operates, how we might influence our destiny, and how to gain a sound, accurate understanding of what is actually happening here.

We see that many opinions, religions and beliefs abound in the world. Human beings are constantly changing, and from generation to generation they do not know what is happening to them.

He cannot integrate all of reality into a single coherent picture. After all, there is science and psychology, various faiths and beliefs, a host of phenomena occurring around us, but we do not know where they come from. We cannot find answers to questions about what happened before us and what will happen after. And most importantly, we do not know how to behave in everyday life.

Throughout history, many people have asked similar questions, until a man named Adam HaRishon (the first man) appeared. He is called the first man because he was the first one who received the answer to the question of what is actually taking place.

He revealed the entire system: how the whole reality (within which he exists) is presented to him, how various forces and systems known as “worlds” operate behind this world, how these all descend to him, why he suddenly wants to comprehend all this, what happens next when he begins to comprehend them, and how he proceeds to reveal the whole universe to himself.

The whole picture opened up before him, his entire future path, until he fully revealed the whole of reality as he exists independently of his physical, animal body, above him, above life and death.

He began to reveal all this, and described it in the book Raziel a-Malakh, (The Secret Angel). This is where the science of Kabbalah began.

How did the second person come to this disclosure, and then the third, the fourth, and so on? It is also because a desire awakened in them to know: “Who am I? Why was I born? Why do I exist? What is my fate? Who controls me? Who governs me? I want to control my own destiny! What is the reason for everything that is happening in the world and with me?”

Since we are all in a common system, we are drawn to our root, much like electric charges in a magnetic field or pieces of iron to a magnet. So we came to a place where we can acquire knowledge about the science of Kabbalah, each from their own direction, seemingly by chance.

The second person also came to Adam HaRishon, and began to study with him. And then came more and more. Yet although all of them, studied under their teacher, each attained revelation through the same path he traversed. After all, a teacher can offer assistance only through explanation, showing the student how to step onto the path of revelation, but each person must achieve it on their own.

What does one reveal? It is the order of the roots that descend to them, awaken them, and give them the desire to comprehend them. If a person realizes this desire, they reach the highest root through these roots, and thus reveals the entire universe. What does one reveal? The purpose of creation is to please the created.

At the end of our development, we reach a state in which we are filled with eternal and perfect delight in our mind, feelings, and awareness. We feel the harmony that reigns in all of reality. We reveal what is hidden from us now. And everything that we reveal is called “the thought of creation.”

Machsom—Ascending One Degree Above Reason

233Question: Why should we engage in war during the preparation period?

Answer: You mean that if we go beyond the Machsom, then it is clear where the right line is, where the left line is, where good is, and where evil is. There it seems like it is revealed to me that I am in a state of discord through which I can clarify what is happening and how to build new Kelim (vessels). Then it really makes sense.

But before the Machsom, I have no idea where I am. I do not even know which forces are bad and which are good and whether I am even engaged in battle. I am simply in an unconscious state. So what is the point of this?

First of all, if we think this way about what happens after the Machsom, this is a mistaken opinion. Even beyond the Machsom, in spirituality, every time a person tries to attain a higher degree, he is in disagreement, in a war between the right and the left lines. He does not know what the right line is or what the left line is. He does not clearly distinguish where the qualities of the Creator are or where the qualities of the creation are.

The Sitra Achra (the other side, the impure force) clothes itself in beautiful garments and confuses him until he reveals the true picture and comes to the understanding that he needs to rise above reason, to verify which line, left or right, correspond to forces that are currently acting in him. The clarifications are carried out by the Creator.

We must not think that beyond the Machsom we are already in a state where there is no lack of clarity. If everything is clear, then this is work in the vessels of reception. This is what you imagine to yourself: “Now we will suffer a little, get a bit confused, and after the Machsom, thank God, we will see where the good angel is, where the evil one is, where the righteous are, and where the sinners are, for the former there is heaven, and for latter, hell. And then it is clear that I will go to heaven and everything will work out.”

These clarifications are within the will to receive, in the Kli that you have now, in the animal Kli. Do you think that in spirituality, clarifications are made in the same way?

A spiritual Kli is a Kli of bestowal. The Kli of bestowal is always opposite to our natural Kelim. Only after acquiring the Kli of bestowal can you clarify what in fact operates in spirituality as the right line and as the left line. That is, you must rise to a level above reason, above your Kelim of reception, above your natural mind, and only then can the clarifications be correct and true.

This is what it means “to be above the Machsom.” If you carry out clarifications in your natural Kelim, this is called “below the Machsom.”

What is the Machsom? The Machsom is when you are inside the Kelim of bestowal, which become yours to the extent of equivalence of qualities, and in this part you clarify, work, live, and already develop within the vessels of bestowal.

Material and Spiritual Wars

294.2As history demonstrates, wars in our world yield little for humanity; they do not prepare us, nor do they leave a lasting Reshimo (informational record) that would allow us, by summing up the results of war and peace, to arrive at one crucial, pressing conclusion about the futility of wars.

Why? Because the desire to receive is constantly growing. If the desire to receive were to remain the same, then a Reshimo would remain and I could somehow protect myself from troubles, from wars. But in the new desire to receive, the previous Reshimo no longer rules; it wants to fill itself even at the expense of another, and therefore our problems begin again.

Within the bounds of this world, the reason for the problems is that the Reshimot rise up, the desire to receive constantly grows and pushes us toward yet another war. We are not guilty of the fact that again and again we are forced to fall into these vicissitudes. If we could, we would prevent them.

In spirituality, however, the causality is completely different. Even if it were possible to prevent a war—no! We are forbidden to stop wars in the spiritual! On the contrary, the peace after the war is important. Peace is known as the measure of perfection. The perfect one (Shalom, Shalem) is the Creator, the quality of the Creator. Adhesion with Him is revealed only after the war.

War is a process wherein the intention to receive undergoes a collapse and disintegration that ultimately transforms into an intention for the sake of bestowal. A new Kli (vessel) is formed; it did not exist before the war and could only emerge through this process. This Kli is for maintaining peace.

Therefore, without entering the left line, into the disagreement between the left and right lines, into the correction of the left line, it is impossible for us to attain a Kli for true peace (Shalom), true perfection (Shlemut).

From here come our ascents and descents, this whole whirlpool in which a person finds himself in the process of his inner spiritual development, and all of these things contribute to the appearance of new Kelim (vessels), which make it possible to attain perfection.

Lag Ba’Omer—The Festival of Light

293.1Question: What is the meaning of the holiday Lag Ba’Omer?

Answer: Lag Ba’Omer is a special holiday; it is a festival of light, the day when Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the author of The Book of Zohar (a work unparalleled in all generations of humanity), passed away from this world.

Within this single book, all the laws of the spiritual world are described, together with the entire network of connections that governs us from above, and determines the whole process we undergo in this world.

The spiritual world is the upper system that activates our world, which is completely governed from above. Our entire world emerged from a single point of the Big Bang, expanded, and developed over 14 billion years.

In the course of this evolution, the Earth was formed with its solid crust surrounding a raging fire. The cooling of this crust allowed life to exist on the surface, together with all surrounding nature.

But the question is not how the still, vegetative, and animate levels developed, but how we develop and where we are heading. This is what The Zohar speaks about. It truly speaks about everything, including the formation of the upper worlds that influence and govern us.

This can also be seen in The Zohar and in the writings of Isaac Luria, the great Kabbalist from Safed in the 16th century. Therefore, the wisdom of Kabbalah has much to say about the counting of the Omer (Sefirat HaOmer). But in essence it speaks about the correction of a person who must transform himself to become a spiritual being.

Question: What must he correct?

Answer: It is written: “I have created the evil inclination, and given the Torah for its correction, for its light returns to the source.” We are initially created from the evil inclination, an egoistic desire to receive, and therefore we consider only ourselves, not others. In this form, the world exists, and we see where it is heading.

The purpose of creation is, that through the process of our development, we eventually come to the realization that our ego, our egoistic desire to enjoy, is actually causing us harm; that we have reached a dead end in development and are no longer capable of moving forward; that we are destroying our lives, our families, and the lives of our children, with no hope for a good future.

Comment: This resembles the current situation in Israel.

My Response: Indeed. But all of this is intended to bring us to a state of repentance regarding our egoistic development, to make us realize that our ego is an evil inclination that is leading us to destruction.

At that point we come to feel a need correction: “How can we correct our nature? How can we treat others with friendship? How can we live in love, unity, and bestowal?” This is the only way can we exist in an integral world, a world where we are all interconnected and mutually dependent. How can we be connected if we are mired in mutual hatred?

In such a state, the wisdom of Kabbalah is revealed; it explains what the Torah truly is. For this very reason Kabbalah is referred to as the true Torah. It is through this science that we learn how to correct ourselves. To correct oneself means to relate to others according to the main rule of the Torah: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This is well known, yet rarely observed.

To love your neighbor means that I must just as I love myself. This seems unrealistic, and indeed it is beyond human ability. Yet it is written: “I have created the evil inclination, and I have given the Torah for its correction.”

This means there a force called “Torah” exists; it is not merely a book as commonly understood, but a method of correction through the light, as it is written: “its light returns to the source.”

“Torah” (from the Hebrew “Hora’a” – instruction) is also referred to the science of light or the wisdom of Kabbalah. When a person uses it correctly to correct themself, they awaken a force hidden in nature, which begins to operate within them, and they feel how they change.

This is a positive, benevolent force of nature, the force of bestowal and love; it gives a person a good feeling and a kind attitude toward others. Through it one exits their ego, rises above it, and becomes bestowing, kind, and good toward others.

The instant this force is revealed in a person, they begin to perceive reality differently. Instead of this world, one perceives the upper world.

We begin to perceive reality through newly acquired qualities, qualities not of reception, but of bestowal; no longer driven by a constant urge to receive solely for our own sake, exploiting everyone else in the process, but by a desire to act for the benefit of society as a whole. We see that everyone is interconnected like one family, and it is impossible for one to be well while another suffers.

Today we have reached a state where we must embark on this process of correction. We see that it is impossible to continue as before. Consequently, the wisdom of Kabbalah is revealed, which explains how we can correct ourselves and build a society connected by good relations.

Question: How is the holiday of Lag Ba’Omer connected to this process?

Answer: This is precisely where correction occurs. Kabbalah explains that our egoistic desire to receive—to absorb everything into ourselves at the expense of others—is an evil force within each person. Therefore our soul is called “shattered,” and we must repair it.

It is known in Kabbalah that the soul consists of 49 parts (7 X 7). There are 7 main qualities, each divided into 7, making 49 in total. Each must be corrected.

We correct them through the light that reforms, a special force that is hidden in nature. During the days of the Omer count, we reveal specific egoistic desires within ourselves that cause harm to others, and we seek to correct them.

We draw the light that reforms and it corrects each of these 49 parts of the soul.

In this way, we correct these 49 parts, from the holiday of Passover to Shavuot. But on the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer, Lag Ba’Omer, there is a special state. Its uniqueness is that if we reach this stage in correction, we can be assured we will continue and complete it.

For this reason, it was on this day that Rabbi Shimon completed his work and departed from our world, and we celebrate the elevation of his soul.

Question: You say the soul has 49 parts. Can they actually be counted?

Answer: Yes. This is how we perceive them as we correct the soul. Even a simple religious person recites which Sefira he is correcting daily during the Omer, although he may not feel or understand it.

But those who study Kabbalah not only say these words, they realize these corrections within themselves.

Comment: The 49 days of the Omer conclude on the 50th day, the holiday of Shavuot, when it is customary to eat dairy and wear white.

My Response: Shavuot is both the giving of the Torah from above and its reception from below. The giving has already occurred; the reception depends on us.

It is written that every day a person should say that the Torah has been given to him. The problem is only in receiving it, that is, in feeling that I must correct myself, and therefore I need the light that reforms.

Then I accept all the rules of the Torah: to be “as one man with one heart,” “love your neighbor as yourself,” and “do not do to another what is hateful to you.”

Let us hope that ultimately we will understand that we have a powerful force in our hands that is capable of correcting us and elevating us above this entire reality.

Rise to the Level of Human

707Question: If one entity devours another in nature, yet nature is in harmony, is it possible that our devouring one another is also an absolutely harmonious state?

Answer: Yes, but only on the animate level. The inanimate, vegetative, and animate levels of nature are structured on the principle of mutual consumption amidst a struggle against each other. This struggle constitutes evolution.

On these levels the use of one by another is not considered shameful or blameworthy. One animal, when it eats another, does not feel any pangs of conscience. Suppose a human acts against another human,  he may rationalize in order to justify himself, to somehow explain to himself the purpose and reasons for his actions. But animals do not have this; they have a simple calculation: I must eat the weaker in order to continue my own existence.

All this, on the animate level, is considered the norm. But now we are rising to the level of Human. And here a problem arises. We must begin to move forward, not by devouring one another, but precisely through connection with one another, by rising above our egoism and not indulging it.

I hope that people will begin to understand this because otherwise we will not survive. Of course, we will continue to exist, but in very bad states.

Therefore, we face a monumental task: to spread the message as widely as possible that we must come to a collective resolution regarding how to advance toward the goal of creation. And the goal of creation is to bring human society to a harmonious state, to mutual fulfillment, to the right connection between us.

And then the rest of nature (inanimate, vegetative, and animate) will also come to harmony. Then we will be able to restore our ecology, an issue that causes deep concerns for everyone. If we come to a balance among us, everything will be wonderful.

Since we are on the very highest level of development compared to the other levels of nature, we will compel them to come into balance too. The time of the human level is coming.
