The Flame of Hope Will Never Go Out

962.3Question: People cross oceans to find some land or discover something. This is hope. How can we not lose hope when everything has burned out, when all the candles of hope have flickered out—love, faith, peace of mind, everything?

Answer: It is by knowing that everything is in the hands of the Creator because a person realizes for sure that nothing is in his hands.

Question: Is this candle a hope? Everything is in the hands of the Creator, is this the next step?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Why does the Creator always leave us this little step, this last candle?

Answer: To catch us at the last minute, the last second, or the last moment, and to continue on together with us.

This candle is a candle of connection between a person in this world and a person in the upper world.

Question: Does it burn all the time, this candle?

Answer: It escorts the person onward.

Question: Are there states when this candle does not burn, when there is no hope? Do you think such states exist?

Answer: No, it is always lit.

Question: Is this what we call “the Creator is good who does good”?

Answer: Yes, otherwise, such a person would not have been born, for the Creator knows his whole life in advance until the end.

Question: Why do we so often not see this candle and lose hope?

Answer: We are not so attuned to our existence.

Question: What is the right attitude?

Answer: The right attitude is that the goodness of the Creator is always before us.

A Look at the Rising Generation, Part 2

959Interaction with the Computer Screen

We need to decide how we want to see the next generation, and we should make a list of principles and behaviors, and accordingly create a program to bring them to this state. It is very important to define the right principles because we may be wrong.

I remember discussing the problem of early sexual relations with psychologists many years ago, and they said it was not a big deal if teenagers started having sex at the age of 13. This seemed controversial to me, but no one wanted to listen to me. As a result, this age has dropped to nine today.

The question remains: Is that a bad thing? In any case, this issue should be brought into a public forum.

We must decide whether this is acceptable or not, and within what framework, so that it does not ruin young people’s lives or damage their future, so they feel that an intimate relationship is more than just sex, and family is more than burdensome responsibilities to each other. If young people perceive family only as a burden, they will not want to get married at all.

We need to understand the peculiarity of the generation that we are facing because it all must change its nature. We are experiencing radical changes in technology and in our relationships, and we have moved from human-to-human connection to human-to-computer-screen connections. Through these screens we are influenced from all over the world, not just from our village, city, or small country.

Comment: Psychologists say that the younger generation lacks empathy. It is precisely because connections have become less “humanized” and more computerized that children have lost the ability to empathize. He may be a wonderful child, but he lacks empathy for those close to him.

My Response: This is a consequence of several phenomena that are related to each other and influence one another. Firstly, there is a change in the climate and in how our planet affects humans. After all, man is an integral part of the whole of nature.

Secondly, our ego is constantly growing, and in the last generation it has grown in a very particular way. We have stopped communicating directly with each other and have switched to communicating through technological means, to a completely different type of communication between people.

I am not connecting with people anymore, but with machines. Even when I am listening to the news, reading something, or talking to someone, I am talking to the car. There are computer systems between us that determine how we feel and understand each other. What I see or do not see, what I hear, and how I react depend on these systems.

Machines determine my connection to the world. That is, we exist in a completely artificial system. We must finally determine what we have come to, and whether we still have a chance to change something, or just raise our hands.

Cling to the Upper

962.4Comment: Any system, any hierarchy, is built on a leader.

My Response: No. In Kabbalah, the leaders are different. Our leader will be the one who completely annuls himself in relation to me. People still do not understand how strict the hierarchy is in the spiritual world.

In any corporeal sciences or in any corporeal achievements, you can surpass your teacher, move forward and further, as, for example, in the development of sciences. The same applies to children: We want them to develop even more and deeper.

But in Kabbalah a very interesting process takes place. There are two paths in it—from top to bottom and from bottom to top, from the world of infinity to us and from our world to the world of infinity.

Receiving information and spiritual instruction occurs from the top down, and therefore it goes through Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, David, and so on, that is, through all Kabbalists, and ultimately through my teacher and me to those who are my students and even those who are not.

Suppose people listened to us for a bit, picked up this contact, and they disappeared to who knows where; it does not matter. Even if they live somewhere else and study with someone else, it is not important. As a result, they will come to the same result and then, as if, return back.

What do I want to say? In receiving information from above, a student must annul himself before me. This is called the condition of learning from me “mouth to mouth” (“peh el peh“) on the common level of the screen. This is very important! Baal HaSulam writes about this in many of his works.

I cannot say this to the students, because, first of all, there are those who will think that I need their worship, or that they should completely “erase themselves.” The student must gradually understand what it means to cling to the upper, and on the other hand, he must try to be independent all the time.

Any spiritual state consists of two opposites, and the problem lies in our adapting us to it. Therefore, I am very sorry that sometimes such rejections of students from me occur. But nothing can be done.

Either they do such stupid things themselves that can only be compensated later by many years of searching and by other alternative actions of correction instead of those that they should have done earlier.

It was the same for me with my teacher. There is no such thing as going through it absolutely smoothly. There were many small, stupid distances from him: disobedience, even neglect, depending on the level at which all this is evaluated, measured, weighed.

I am absolutely certain that there has never been a student in history who could completely, from the first moment to the last, annul himself before the teacher, so that information would flow into him from top to bottom in the same way with as a fetus in the mother’s womb, when it completely annuls and therefore becomes an integral part of her body and thus develops.

I see that what happened to me happens very often to my students. I was not the most compliant student; on the contrary, there was something in me…

Question: Is it better for a student’s advancement when he is compliant or rebellious?

Answer: It depends on the root of the soul.

Comment: You know that there are students who do everything without question. On the other hand, there are those who resist.

My Response: This is not the kind of resistance and this is not the kind of submission. Submission can stem from pride, while resistance, on the contrary, from the desire to feel as quickly as possible at the junction of contact, in contradictions, where a person must change himself.
