Share Happiness with a Friend

549Question: Is it possible to alleviate a friend’s illness by taking part of it upon oneself? And how can I transfer a feeling of happiness to a friend?

Answer: If my system is higher than yours, it is more filled with happiness because it exists on a higher level of life and balance. Therefore, when you are in despair, it can pass some of its energy to you, a measure of happiness, to the extent that an inner connection exists between us.

From that higher system, you appear like a small child; it is greater than you because happiness is higher than dissatisfaction in its level of awareness and value. It doesn’t even matter what makes a person happy; it may be something very simple.

Question: How do we actually transmit happiness to one another: through words, feelings, thoughts?

Answer: We can transmit happiness even without any of these; it all depends on the level of our connection: inanimate, vegetative, animate, or human. Happiness flows from a higher system into a lower one depending on the quality of our connection and on how much, at that moment, I am able to annul myself before my friend.

All people are connected with everyone. We don’t need to build this connection or cut it off. We are already tied into one network, like neurons in the brain or like cells in a single body.

The whole universe is one system. The only question is how much we humans recognize this and wish to reveal, enliven, and strengthen this connection between us and all parts of creation. But the connection already exists. The degree to which we become aware of this connection determines the measure of our friendship.

Question: On whom does it depend whether my friend’s happiness will flow into me—on him or on me?

Answer: It requires mutuality; it cannot be done one-sidedly. You must at least slightly open yourself to such a transfer with respect to the friend. Suppose your grief is so great that you completely close off inside yourself and separate from others, then you cannot absorb anything from them.

Question: What does it mean to open myself to the influence of a friend?

Answer: It means to love him as yourself. This is about a true heart-to-heart connection where we do not feel ourselves as separate bodies or foreign systems, but feel so close as if we were one whole.

Our two systems become so intertwined that they function as one. Our connection is limitless; an infinite flow of information, feelings, and thoughts pass between us. These are two systems, but they are linked in the closest possible way.

Question: How should I open myself to a friend for his positive influence?

Answer: In the same way an infant behaves in its mother’s arms, completely annulling itself before her. The infant knows nothing about itself and understands nothing; it is tuned only to absorb everything from its mother. This is why babies develop so quickly; we transmit everything we have to them.

We not only pass on tender words and smiles, but energy, our attitude. A baby absorbs this energy through thousands of sensors it possesses.

We must become like infants, completely annulling ourselves, with all our problems, in relation to the influence of our friends. Then they will be able to transfer their happiness to us as much as they wish. Unlike misfortune, happiness does not decrease when shared; it only grows. The more we make others happy, the happier we become.

The energy of happiness has no limits. To the extent that we can give and fill others, we will feel an even greater desire and capacity to do so in ourselves. After all, in this way we connect to the source of the Big Bang’s energy, to the upper force that created and sustains the entire universe.

Question: Then according to this, people who work in service of others should be very happy. Why don’t we see this?

Answer: Because they give against their will, and therefore they constantly feel drained. A mother, however, who loves her baby, may become physically tired, but she never tires of caring for him or loving him.

Questions about Spiritual Work—275

281.02Question: Baal HaSulam writes that as long as the nation of Israel does not come to the fulfillment of the Torah and commandments Lishma, the troubles in the world will not cease.

Over these years, we have had different appeals to the public, both to Jews and to the nations of the world. How do you see who this nation of Israel is, and to whom we must address ourselves?

Answer: It is those who are now attending our lessons and who wish, with our help, to attain the goal of creation.

Question: You said that we do not have the strength to influence all of humanity. Should we ask for this strength, or is it better for now to focus on the work in the ten?

Answer: We need to focus on the ten so that all your forces are inside it and you are ready to invest yourselves completely in its strengthening.

The Path of Transmitting the Light

252Question: You said that we can be like a tube through which the quality of bestowal passes to all of humanity. Are we ready for this?

Answer: Ask yourselves. Clarify what you need in order to become this tube, the path through which, from above, from the Creator, the light will come, spread into all the vessels, reach our world, and fill us.

Question: Why do we not have the strength for the light to act upon all of humanity through us?

Answer: We still do not have true, correct intentions.

We are only now learning how to begin thinking correctly, with whom to be connected, and in what way to unite with one another. Soon this will become clearer.

Seeds of the Future

934Back to the Way Things Were

Question: There was a time when an ordinary Israeli cultivated the land and dedicated him or herself entirely to the revival of the country. Today, such terminology is simply irrelevant. The land is worked by a Filipino worker or agricultural machinery.

We have plenty of clothing and food; in high-tech we are ahead of the entire world, and particularly successful Israelis secure themselves financially for life by the age of thirty.

Of course, any generalization is conditional, yet, in our days, self-sacrifice for the sake of the homeland and society is, to put it mildly, barely relevant. We remember it during military operations and on holidays, but it has no connection to our daily motivations.

The image of Israel as the fulfillment of the eternal dream of the Jewish people has faded. The older generation still remembers the times when people would sit in a circle and sing songs in the evening. But now, when the good old Sabra is a thing of the past, what lies ahead? What will Israelis become in the future?

Answer: They will once again sit in a circle. At home, on lawns, in courtyards, and in parks. People will need connection, even if through the Internet. They will feel that through unity they receive strength, the spirit of life, and this feeling will fill them.

Today they joke around while gathering at a barbecue on Independence Day, but tomorrow they will need precisely that spirit, and that is what they will search for.

To tell the truth, the whole world is searching for it. And the futility of this search leads to drug addiction, depression, emotional explosions, violence, and terror. They are all from inner dissatisfaction and emptiness.

The current generation of Israelis is already shedding its protective shell of untouchability; it no longer hides behind the armor of indifference. It is searching for fulfillment. Although people are still captured by the newer, constantly changing corporeal temptations, nonetheless, in their hearts the seed of a true inner ideal is already beginning to sprout.

A New Hero

Question: What will be the new hero of our time? Describe the features of the Israeli of tomorrow.

Answer: The Israeli of tomorrow is a person who understands that through unity with others he will achieve the highest prosperity and perfection. This is more than lifelong financial security by the age of 30; more than a high position that allows one to twist the world around their finger, more than fame, success in the eyes of the public, and so on.

He strives for unity because only through it can he succeed in anything. He feels that this is the most important thing in life, because through the point of unity he can attain everything: health, money, well-being, love, a strong family…

In good mutual connection with others, worries vanish; the whole world becomes yours. It is as if you live in paradise. This is exactly how we feel life when we unite with one another. Because in this, a symbiosis of two forces is created: the positive and the negative. On one side is egoism, and on the other is the positive force that comes from unity, which balances the negativity of our nature.

Then we feel goodness and peace, and we become capable of everything. Like plus and minus in an electrical circuit, the two opposite forces within us connect to the “engine,” to society, to the people of Israel, or even to a small group of people, and the “engine” begins to operate correctly, giving us unprecedented possibilities.

A Universal Specialization

Question: So is the key to future success, not a university degree in a trending field, but specialization in unity?

Answer: Yes, above all. And afterward, through this unity, a person will succeed as a high-tech specialist, an engineer, an accountant, whatever they become. The main point is that inner fulfillment and satisfaction will come from kind interaction with others.

This is how we will build a new society, a new industry, a new world. A person in it is sensitive to unity with others and immediately sees how this unity elevates his life to a new level, a level of freedom, independence, warmth, safety—everything that cannot be found anywhere else.

From Illusion to the True Reality

539We live in an inner illusion, and therefore we need to bring ourselves to the system that truly exists. Today we dwell in an illusory system, which in Kabbalah is called the “imaginary world” (Olam HaMedume), or our world.

Moreover, for this there is no need to create a matrix in the 21st century, like in Hollywood movies. It is enough to turn to books from 5,000 years ago where all of this is laid out step by step. There is no need to break through an open door.

Our world is a complete illusion. It constantly operates inside us. We only need to create normal, natural, correct feelings and thoughts within ourselves that would give us, instead of an illusion, a true picture of reality.

But this true picture is also inside us, not outside as it seems to us. All of it is entirely within our desires. Light paints certain images within the desire, by comparing its qualities and desires, their difference or their similarity. This is the picture of the world.

Therefore our task is to move from a great illusion to a lesser one, and to an even lesser one, until we approach the true reality in which only light fills us. And everything except for it was an illusory reality, only in its various measures. That is why all worlds are called “worlds,” from the word “olama” (concealment), which indicates that we live in concealment from the true reality, the world of infinity.

People imagine another reality in the form of pictures: walls, ceilings, floors, or something else. But I imagine it in the form of inner experiences and sensations.

For example, I ask you: “Do you remember what state you were in the day before yesterday?” This is how you remember this state, and it may be simultaneously associated for you with some place and time, that is, with the coordinates “time,” “place,” and “movement.” And then I ask you, “What are your experiences, your sensations?” and then you convey them to me, as if extracting them from your memory, from your archive, and you describe them. That is, you immerse yourself in this experience again and explain it.

This is similar to how it happens in the spiritual. There is no material volume there. This volume is called “desire” in which I begin to feel my past state again and in some way transmit it to you. That is all. Only inside the desire.

It’s just like in our world. Suppose you detach yourself from everything that is around us and imagine that you and I are in some cosmic space where there is no up, no down, nothing—emptiness. But within us there exist certain shared empathies, sensations, thoughts, memory, and everything else. So these are what constitute, as if were, a spiritual state.
