Our Future Depends On What We Do With The Present

A question I received: If the solution to all our problems lies in correcting the relationships between people, then how does Kabbalah’s approach differ from all the other methods that say people should do good deeds?

My Answer: The science of Kabbalah explains that we all exist in a net that binds us together. Because of this, we have to treat each other as if we are in one boat, or like the members of one family. Baal HaSulam writes that the whole world is one family, and we must therefore build harmonious relationships of collaboration among us, instead of our present egoistic relationships.

The general connection among us that has been revealed obliges us to be in agreement with one another. This means that there must be agreement in our actions, thoughts, desires, and everything else. However, no one knows how to make seven billion people interact harmoniously with each other. And yet, the interconnection that is being revealed to us obliges us to accomplish this.

The revelation will continue to happen gradually, one step at a time. No one knows how the next stage will be revealed because this depends on how we realize the current stage. For this reason, Kabbalists propose that the entire society be taught about the law of interaction that is being revealed in the world. This knowledge will enable people to make the right actions.

Would You Trust Others With Your Life?

A question I received: Why can’t people develop the instinct of love for their neighbor just like animals do while under the pressure of difficult circumstances and suffering? This seems to be the most natural and evolutionary path of development.

My Answer: You’re right: if people were on the same level of development as animals, they really would be able to develop the same kind of instinct as bees, ants, and human cells. For example, a single cell in a body is able to sense that if it doesn’t unite with another cell, and then with a third cell, and a fourth cell, it loses out on the force of life. In other words, two cells that are separated go through the realization of evil and reach the realization, “We should unite in order to live longer and better.”

In the process of uniting, the cells come to understand the benefit of the unification to a greater extent, and they then begin to separate according to each cell’s “specialization”: some cells become the heart, others become the lungs, others – the brain, yet none of the organs can exist separately. Each organ is certain that the others will take care of it.

In the past, a cell could exist on its own, completely alone. However, as the cells united, they discovered that specialization gives rise to a higher form of existence. And in order for this to happen, each cell must reject its personal life and begin to live the life of the whole organism.

This way, the cell literally entrusts its life to the other cells. It gives its life over to them because by specializing to become an eye cell, for example, it stops carrying out the other functions. It trusts another cell to be its heart, and another cell to be its brain, and another cell to be the lungs.

And  what role do the lungs play? They breathe for the whole body, but actually they practically don’t need oxygen for themselves. They do it because the whole body needs the oxygen to exist. And the other cells have absolute faith that the lungs will provide them with oxygen, because they are all in a mutual guarantee!

This is how stem cells (small, universal cells) became cells of different types – of the brain, lungs, heart, and so on. And that is how organs formed and living organisms began to develop.

Biologists believe that this happened “on its own.” But in reality, this process happened because of the revelation of “Reshimot” (informational genes), which are implanted in creation from the beginning and are revealed in a specific order. According to them, we must now consciously achieve the same kind of unity in human society.

We Can’t Unite, But We Must

Today humanity is discovering that it must unite, yet people cannot even imagine that this is possible. It seems completely unrealistic. And this reflects how distant we are from one another, how separated by our egoistic goals. We are absolutely powerless to unite with everyone as one whole, to be one government and one nation, above and beyond all the differences. However, this is just what Nature demands of us, and today we are revealing our inability to do so.

So we throw up our hands and give up. However, it is exactly this realization of our own powerlessness that we have to reveal – and nothing else! We have to understand that we are incapable of uniting, and yet we are obligated to do so.

As soon as the world will realize this, people will suddenly turn to the Kabbalists, those who hold the wisdom of how to unite everyone into one whole. People will realize that they have to unite, and will understand that the world’s salvation depends on this. This is the only way to save our world from destruction, because the world is global, integral and like a small village where everyone is interconnected. And yet, people will realize that they are unable to accomplish this on their own, and will ask the Kabbalists for the wisdom and the strength to unite.

Along with all of humanity, Kabbalists will also grow closer and unite, and thus everyone together will reach the complete correction of egoism and the sensation of eternal, perfect fulfillment.

An Honest Deal Brings The Greatest Profit

A question I received: The average person doesn’t see that the crisis is revealing the connection between people, and that mutual guarantee is a law of nature. He just sees that the dishonest manipulation of the stock market has caused the stock prices to fall, and that the company where he worked suffered losses and he was laid off. What does nature have to do with any of this?

My Answer: The current crisis is global, and therefore it’s impossible to fix it piecemeal. It is because the universal connection among all people is now being revealed. This is also why the crisis is not just happening in the economy, but also in industry, trade, culture, education, and more generally – in our attitude to everything.

But the greatest revelation is that all of these phenomena are underpinned by another, deeper layer. This is why we are unable to solve this crisis through additional legislation, agreements or regulators. The only way to make the system function correctly is by changing our relationships with each other.

To do this, we must recognize our mutual responsibility to one another, to the whole of humanity, to our planet and all of Nature. In the meantime, Nature, which completely surrounds us, holds us in its grip and is tightening it. It demands that we start understanding the need for mutual responsibility and making different kinds of contracts with one another: in addition to the conditions laid out on paper, the lawyer’s signature, the penalties and other regulators, the contracts must include our inner willingness to be honest with one another. This is the mutual connection and guarantee, and they cannot be formally stipulated or dryly observed. In order for any individual to hold true to any agreement, one has to correct one’s egoism.

Today people always profit at someone else’s expense. But now we have to create something entirely new. This is why the solution to the current crisis looks completely unreal: we have to come up with a way to make a profit that won’t come at our neighbor’s expense. How is this possible? The only formula for success we have ever known is: if you lose, I win. This is how everyone today thinks. We are confident that this is the only way to make a profit. But is there another way?

There is, if only each person will limit his material profit to the level of bare necessity, and will contribute all the rest to the society. This is how we can get to a point where no one will live in need. Moreover, every person will receive internal, spiritual compensation in the form of society’s respect and appreciation, depending on the level of his contribution. Thus, one will also feel personal benefit from servicing the society.

On the other hand, in the egoistic society people disregard this kind of attitude. They despise tokens of appreciation and consider money to be the most important and powerful stimulus.

What Is Balance In Nature?

laitman_75A question I received: Words like “mutual balance” and “mutual guarantee” are very beautiful and admirable. However, it’s not clear what they mean. Could you explain it using specific examples?

My Answer: Balance in Nature means that all are equal and everything belongs to all, including the land and everything it holds (such as oil, gas, ore, water, and so on). Balance is when everyone has an equal attitude toward the consumption of Nature’s resources.

It is necessary to maintain this balance when consuming from Nature: every person must receive only the things he needs to lead a normal life. In addition, people should not produce anything that isn’t necessary for the existence of their animate bodies. Any excess is harmful and contrary to the law of Nature’s balance.

Among people, the law of balance is properly expressed when each person receives according to his essential needs, his natural necessities. And we are not equal in this regard, since every person has different innate qualities and needs.

Nature or the Creator has made us different on purpose, in order for us to sense each other’s needs, desires and thoughts. It is in order for us to develop a desire to feel the souls of others, to sense their inner essence and their desires. Then, if you want to achieve an equal supply of resources for all, you will have to sense the people around you the same way you sense yourself. Only then will we be able to become cells of one body.

Humanity Is Like Fish Caught In Nature’s Net

A question I received: Suppose that all of humanity gets together as one family and decides that they will divide all the resources fairly between all seven billion people. But what will happen if people remain inside their egos, which only continue to grow?

My Answer: It is impossible to do what you describe without correction. Therefore, the way to all of this should be paved by education. When I say “education,” I mean the teaching and explanation about one’s freedom of choice, the goal of creation, the essence of a human being, how we perceive reality, and the development of humanity by way of egoistic development. It’s because we have to learn how to live in the new, unified, interconnected system. We cannot run away from this system, and thus we have no choice.

You are like a fish caught in a net, and in order to survive, you have to learn the laws of this net. We must now learn the laws of the new global world and pass them on to the whole of humanity. People have to understand these laws and the fact that they have no choice. Otherwise, they will be pushed to the same thing by suffering, until they will finally start to obey the common law of nature against their will.

This is how the laws of Nature are becoming revealed. Kabbalah and Bnei Baruch are not trying to give people orders as to what they should be doing. Rather, they have to understand these things and agree with them, at least in part. However, in order to get there, there has to be a permanent media campaign that would show people examples of the correct behavior. All of this should be encouraged by society, and it can only happen when people will realize that this is the only possible choice.

Unity Is The Way To Receive Complete Satisfaction

Dr. Michael LaitmanA question I received: Why will people’s suffering decrease if they value bestowal more?

My Answer: At first, this will happen because people will want to get closer to each other, even if it is for their own benefit. Then, the closeness to each other will also bring them closer to Nature. And this, in turn, will affect their desires: they will gradually begin to value bestowal in and of itself.

Suddenly, you will sleep better because you bestow to others. You will find that you have medical insurance, social security, a pension, and the opportunity to go on a vacation. You are provided with food and everything you need for you family, your kids, and your elderly parents. You have taken care of others and now others are taking care of you. People will reap the benefits of being connected to others, and this will cause them to value unity and bestowal.

The general process is as follows. At first a person suffers, but then he becomes convinced that the only way out of the situation is to unite with others. When he does, he sees that the unification benefits him, and he then begins to value the actual connection and the quality of bestowal. These are the stages of one’s development.

Therefore, a person should first feel that unification brings him a reward. And then, even if the unification will not be mandatory, he will already feel that there is something pleasant and good about the act of bestowal itself. Thus, a person will feel that unity is positive in and of itself because it gives him additional strength, better relationships, confidence, and a good mood.

Actually, unification fulfills all of one’s desires – even the desires for money, fame, power, knowledge, food, sex, and family. Thus, it turns out that unity enables a person to receive complete satisfaction.

All Of Humanity Is The Body Of Your Soul

A question I received: When a person first hears of “Mutual Guarantee” and universal dependency, this kind of talk annoys and repulses him. How do we explain that unification is beneficial?

My Answer: Imagine that this person has been in an accident and is on the verge between life and death. His entire body is broken and he lies lifeless on a stretcher. (This is not so far from the truth, since the shattering of the souls is like an accident.)

If he could feel that the only way for him to come back to life is with the help of his friends, he would no longer hate the idea of a mutual guarantee. He would understand that he doesn’t have a body of his own, but only a point. And his entire body – the arms, legs, brain and everything else – is something he can only get from others. He will only get these body parts if the others will sacrifice theirs for him.

This is a mutual guarantee. It is when in addition to the single point you start out with, everything else that you receive comes exclusively from your connection with others. This is because the desire to receive does not exist in the spiritual world; only the desire to bestow exists there. Therefore, one does not live at the expense of oneself, but at the expense of the sacrifices made by all of humanity. They constitute your body.

You are only a point, whereas humanity is the body of your soul. All these people must provide you with the organs you need. If you will love them, and if they will be connected with one another, then the force of the mutual guarantee will bestow all that is necessary to every one of us.

It’s good that people today are already beginning to understand that they do not want to be in a mutual guarantee with others. However, once they will learn that they cannot survive on their own, people will desire the mutual guarantee. And then they will realize that they do not have the strength to attain it by themselves. They will passionately desire for the law of Mutual Guarantee to govern them, but will only discover that they are unable to attain it or practice it.

That is when they will cry out so loudly that they will receive this quality from above. And from that moment on, they will become the Creator’s slaves rather than the Pharaoh’s slaves. This will happen by virtue of their desire to have another power, a different authority, rule over them. This authority is the force of bestowal, instead of their innate egoism.

Would Common Currency Worldwide Be A Good Step?

A question I received: Lately, we hear more and more people proposing that a new common currency be created in the world. Will this help the world unite?

My Answer: I can tell you just one things: any action that’s suitable for all is blessed. This is certain, even if the unification is initially motivated by egoistic interests, as was the case with the establishment of the European Union. It’s clear that the motive for this unification was egoistic: these countries were simply afraid of each other. However, now they are united and make joint actions, pass common laws, trade with each other, and so on.

Unification is always good if it is not aimed at harming anyone. It is written, “Unification of sinners is bad for them and for the whole world.” If a unification is done in order for a society to survive, then it is good. Each country in Europe is not worth much separately, but together, they are a great power. Britain, France, Germany, and Italy are the core, the bulk of the power, and all the other countries connect to them.

The world would really change for the better if we created a world government and common means of control, as if the whole world were one country. Kabbalah says that even this kind of egoistic unification amongst people – unification in order to survive – would lead us to the revelation of the Upper Governance and the Upper World.

Does The Butterfly Effect Indicate Chaos Or Harmony?

A question I received: Your interpretation of the Butterfly Effect is inaccurate. Scientists don’t talk about this effect to prove a system’s cohesion and unification, but to show that a system’s reaction to any interference is unpredictable. Any small interference causes large and unpredictable consequences. And in economics, the Butterfly Effect means that there cannot be any regulator.

My Answer: Everything in Nature is governed by laws. And when we do not know some laws or dependencies in Nature, we say they are unpredictable. Everything is interpreted only relative to the observer – man.

In fact, there is a regulator – the law by which any event depends on other events. And we have to find this regulator. Your approach, however, would lead us to even more problems. If you take a look at the latest scientific research, and at the body of knowledge offered by Kabbalah, instead of chaos you will discover a Higher harmony!
