Desires Before and After the Restriction

276.02Question: Baal HaSulam introduces the concept of Reshimot in TES (The Study of the Ten Sefirot), which are the primary cause of all subsequent desires, both in the spiritual and even in the corporeal world. What is the difference between Reshimot and, say, a Sefira filled with Light?

Answer: A Sefira is a desire created by the Creator, striving to be filled with the light toward which it is directed.

Therefore, all the desires that existed at the very beginning of creation wish to be filled with the light that was originally within them. This is precisely the difference between the desires before the First Restriction (Tzimtzum Alef) and those after it.

Descent and Ascent

282.01Question: You said that the descent of light from above downward is one law, and our work from below upward is another law. I always thought that by ascending from below upward we attain the same laws.

Answer: The descent from above downward proceeds from the upper one to the lower one. Thus they unite and transmit to each other the filling with the round light (Igulim).

And from below upward is a different property, when each Igul (circle) gains its thickness and, by means of the Masach, emits reflected light. Through this light, it ascends to the Malchut of the previous Igul (circle) and shines in it.

In Peace and Perfection

263Question: What does the Kabbalistic principle “The Light is at rest and in perfection” mean?

Answer: The Light is at rest because it has no other motives, actions or desires except to give, influence, fill, that is, to generate only good.

This does not mean that it does not take any action. The Light performs various actions, including alternating ones, but all of them are aimed only at maximizing the fulfillment, saturation, and enjoyment of the object to which it descends.

A Circle and a Line in Spirituality

532Question: When I hear the words “circle,” “line,” or “Sefira,” images of this world appear in my mind. How should I correctly picture and feel what a circle or a line is?

Answer: These are different ways that the light spreads. A circle is the spreading of light without any limitations, while a Kav (line) is with limitations.

Question: Can we attain anything other than the Kav, for example, the Igul (circle)?

Answer: No, we can attain only the line (Kav), but within it, we attain everything that is necessary. The Creator reveals Himself precisely in this way.

548.03Question: What is this state of creation when there are three components: Igulim (circles), Kav (line), and Tzinor (pipe)?

Answer: These are elements that exist in the spiritual world to coordinate the actions of the Sefirot or Partzufim.

Question: Which arose first, Igulim or Kav?

Answer: The Igulim arose first, and after the restriction that creation undergoes, the Kav appears, which is a line connecting the elements of creation.

Igulim and Tzinor

232.08Question: It is said that Igulim (circles) are Kelim without a screen. How can they receive light?

Answer: First of all, they acquire a screen and feel the light that fills them to the extent of the strength of the screen.

Question: How is their screen different from the screen of the Tzinor (tube)?

Answer: It is not different. They have an active screen.

Question: Are Igulim and Tzinor the first ten Sefirot, meaning one Partzuf?

Answer: At first, we only have ten Sefirot. Then they undergo restriction, and darkness is created in them. But to the extent that they can rise above the restriction, they receive the upper light, and it fills them.

Question: So are Igulim darkness?

Answer: Igulim are our Kelim upon which we cannot perform restriction (Tzimtzum). Therefore they remain as circles. And the Kelim upon which we can perform restriction turn into Kelim deYosher.

Depending on what connection they can have with the Kav haYosher (the straight line), to that extent they conduct the light.

Corrected Kli

608.03Creation has a desire. If creation can block itself from receiving the light, it is called making a restriction (Tzimtzum). If after that it partially opens itself so that the light can enter it, this is the nature of creation itself.

In other words, this is already proper reception, reception for the sake of bestowal.

In the world we study, there is a balance between receiving the light and rejecting it, that is, a Kli that does not accept the light, but then opens itself so that, through the light that it receives, it can resemble the Creator and become equal to Him, such a Kli is called corrected.

Whose Decision?

77Question: Was the fact that the light left the fourth stage and then again filled the first three stages a decision of the light or the Kli?

Answer: From the material we are studying, it is clear to us that this was the decision of the Kli. The light affects the Kli, fills it, and forces it to change in accordance with its nature.

We begin our study with the concept of the light and what is Kli. Then we learn how the different parts of the Kli gradually change, how much the person himself changes, and how he reaches a state where he completely corresponds to the light that evokes certain properties in him.

Strive for the Properties of the Light

232.01Question: Where does the additional awakening of the light that created all creation come from in the creations?

Answer: The fact is that the creation feels the need to strive for the properties of the light. Therefore, it develops this system from within itself and begins to strive for the light from Malchut to Keter.

Question: Where does the beginning of this aspiration come from?

Answer: Initially there is no light of Hochma in creation, there is no sensation of the Creator, therefore it desires to master it.

Receive a Sample of Bestowal

237Question: The second and the fourth stages of the spreading of the light are stages in action. And the third stage, as it is said in TES (The Study of the Ten Sefirot), is a kind of sample that a person receives from the Creator. What does it mean to receive a sample of bestowal?

Answer: It means to learn from the first stage how it transforms into the second, into the third, into the fourth stages, and in what way from the fourth stage we can connect with all the other stages and abide within them.
