How Can We Break Free?

424.02Comment: In the 1960s, an American psychologist Martin Seligman conducted experiments with dogs based on Pavlov’s design. I am talking only about a part of the experiment, because it is very complicated.

The purpose of the experiment was to form a fear reflex to the sound of a signal. While Pavlov’s animals received meat after a signal, Seligman’s animals received an electric shock. To prevent the dogs from escaping prematurely, fences were built.

Seligman was confident that when the animals were moved to an enclosure with a low partition, they would run away as soon as they heard the signal. However, in the new cage the dogs sat on the floor and whined. Not a single dog jumped over the easiest obstacle—nor did they even try. When a dog that was not involved in the experiment was put under the same conditions, it easily escaped.

It turns out that the same thing happens to people. A person who is driven into helplessness cannot even jump over a low fence. He does not believe that there is a way out, he just lies on the floor and whines.

Question: What is it about us when a person himself renounces his freedom? You are no longer tied. Quit your job! Leave the country! Get away from this constant failure! You are talented and smart! But no way, he stays in the same place.

Answer: External pressure fetters a person and deprives him of all opportunities for development, awareness, and victory.

Comment: That is, pressure and fear are serious…

My Response: They are a serious weapon in the hands of society or a person.

Question: And if you master this fear and pressure, can you put people down?

Answer: Yes, that is what they tried to do.

Question: But if we talk about our life, does a person still agree with his life even though this is a cage and he suffers in it?

Answer: He has nothing in return. A person does not see that there is something other than this, and therefore, he agrees and tries to find at least some small pleasures, fulfillment, and satisfaction within this framework. This is our life.

Question: How can we see at least a small break and somehow slip through this hole and jump out of it?

Answer: We need to get education that if we want to become the best, then for this we must gain an understanding of freedom from ourselves, from our egoism. And then we can achieve equality among everyone.

Question: What role does egoism play here? For this person who falls down from the blow and does not move, what role does his egoism play? Basically, everything is suppressed in him.

Answer: It is in this very state when he lies under blows that he is beginning to develop the ability to rise above himself. And he begins to fantasize, one might say, how this can be done.

Question: This is how he can break free?

Answer: Yes, in this way he gradually grows.

Question: So this power of suppression and the power of fear is even positive in some sense?

Answer: Yes, it is positive for a person. It develops him.

And what does the Creator use when he wants to lead us to the better, to goodness, to rise above ourselves? It is only by the opposite force, the force of fear, the force of fear of suffering, and so on.

Question: So, now you seem to reassign this to the Creator, that all these are His actions? There are no leaders, there is nobody—just the actions of the Creator?

Answer: Of course, and they are directional.

Question: What kind of creatures are we?

Answer: We are small, weak egoists.

Question: And what are we supposed to grow into?

Answer: We are supposed to understand our little egoism, which represents our entire nature, and wish to rise above it, above this egoism. And for this we need mutual assistance and understanding that there is a different opportunity to exist, and we only need to rise out of ourselves.

Question: Meaning that then we jump over this “fence” and leave?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this “fence” really low?

Answer: Yes, it is, just slightly above the ground.

Question: Does this low “fence” seem like an impenetrable wall to us?

Answer: This is a psychological obstacle.

Question: Precisely psychological?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Then there is a question about freewill. In what case can we take this step toward freedom? What should happen to us?

Answer: We can direct ourselves to the freedom of will if we decide that we have no other choice and do not try to run away somewhere, hide, embellish, or sweeten our existence in egoism, in exile from the good, from kindness, from everything.

If we pull ourselves up by the bootstraps in this way and act, we will see that it is possible.

Question: What is a free person, what does it mean to be free?

Answer: A free person is one who has no restrictions. And this is, first of all, internal freedom.

Comment: “No restrictions” can be understood in different ways.

My Response: “There are no restrictions” means that a person can live with everyone—everyone will feel good with him, and he will feel good with everyone. That is, this person is not guided by his egoism.

Everyone Is Allotted Their Own Cup of Poison

49.01Comment: There are Buddhist sayings about suffering and sufferers. If possible, could you comment on them?

“Never interfere in someone else’s suffering. A person must grow tired of himself and drink the cup of poison allotted to him.”

My Response: This is absolutely correct! Beautifully said! If you try to pull someone out before they have drunk their cup of poison, it will not help them.

Question: They must grow tired of themselves—is that true?

Answer: Yes, even to the point of hatred.

Comment: So I simply live, and then I come to the realization that…

My Response: That all your evil comes from you. For that, you need to change yourself somehow. How is that possible? And here you come to the point of the correct decision.

Question: Does it mean that my life is in order for me to grow tired of myself?

Answer: Yes.

Question: What about the fact that I am allotted this cup of poison, how do you feel about the word “allotted”?

Answer: Yes, it is on one side of the scales, and a drop of wisdom is on the other side of the scales.

Question: Do I have to drink this cup of poison one way or another?

Answer: Without refusing.

Question: Do I open my mouth and take the poison?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Am I allotted a specific dose?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Every person?

Answer: Every person.

Comment: There is no life optimism here.

My Response: Why? Life begins precisely when you understand that before you is a cup of poison and a beautiful, balanced, and good life. Choose.

Comment: I will choose the balanced and good life, I am telling you right now.

My Response: Only through the cup of poison!

Question: Are you saying I must take this cup of poison and then I will reach this balanced life?

Answer: Yes.

Question: So the road to paradise goes through hell. Can we say that?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can a person live with this thought?

Answer: People live with it.

Question: Are you saying that this is how we should live, on top of everything else?

Answer: Yes.

Whose Soul Does the Creator Give to a Person?

294.4Question: Second grader Stasik asks the Creator: “Did You give me my own soul or someone else’s?”

Answer: No, you received your own soul. But if you are not satisfied with it, you can work to correct it.

Question: What kind of soul should one aim for?

Answer: One that loves everyone.

Question: Do people have this desire?

Answer: I do not think so.

Question: But what about children?

Answer: Personally, I think children are more inclined toward correction than adults.

Adults have already settled into their ways and believe that things will not and cannot get better, and they simply should accept what they have.

Question: Do children still hold on to hope?

Answer: Yes.

Comment: Ideally, with experience, we should…

My Response: But we do not. Where would we get the patience, experience, or determination to resist what we have? We just accept it as it is.

Question: Is this because of the blows? Because we constantly experienced setbacks and received blows?

Answer: Yes, it is because we are too lazy to correct ourselves.

Will Parasites Ever Be Punished?

294.4Comment: From a letter: “You always talk about kindness and love, but in reality, people treat each other like parasites.”

My Response: Of course.

Question: “And the kindest people in this world take the most blows from others and from fate. So the choice is either to be a parasite in life or to suffer from parasites. Please explain why one should be kind in this world, and why do you advise it?”

Answer: Because if we are kind, we become like the Creator. Then it will be better and easier for us both in this world and in the next.

Comment: But this person believes it is better for the parasites, those who use others and live that way.

My Response: That is just how it seems to him. In small, limited circumstances, he might be somewhat right. But overall in life, no.

Comment: So you are saying that we should still raise children with good relationships, with concepts of friendship, decency, and so on. And looking at the bigger picture, you say that this is correct.

My Response: Yes.

Comment: But if we narrow our focus, as he says, parasites just…

My Response: When you narrow your focus, you are limiting yourself to isolated cases. And then, of course, it seems better to be an egoist. But if you look at life as a whole, at what a person is left with, and where they end up after, then it is clearly better to be kind.

Question: Tell me, does this kindness ever come back to a person?

Answer: It does not exactly “come back.” It gives you the ability to understand why everything is made this way and how it is still better to act kindly.

Question: Is that important?

Answer: It is important.

Comment: Right now, you are not even saying that kindness will return to you as good.

My Response: We do not see that.

Question: But if we look at it globally, does it still return?

Answer: Not in our world.

Question: You are being so definitive: if you do good, good does not come back to you?

Answer: Yes.

Question: But we should not conclude from this that we should not do good? We should continue?

Answer: Yes.

Question: You started by saying that the Creator is good and does good and we must be like Him. Will this ever come back to me? Or should I not think about that at all?

Answer: The fact that you think this way and can act this way is already the Creator’s bestowal. This is already the reward.

Question: What about those who, as he says, are parasites, what happens to them? I would like to ask about them.

Answer: They calculate their dividends and believe they are happy.

Question: And you think they are not?

Answer: No.

Question: Can we say, as an egoist asking, that after they finish their life, in another world, will they be punished for being parasites? Or not? Will there be punishment?

Answer: Yes, without a doubt! And it will be in such a way that they will even not understand it at first.

Question: But it comes? Is this how the Creator teaches a person?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Through suffering like this?

Answer: It is not the Creator teaching the person; it is a general law of nature: everything a person does must be compensated for—good with good, evil with evil.

Personal Questions, Sincere Answers

281.01Question: You said you could not rest; you were always looking for something. Did you understand what you were looking for? This is a personal question for you.

Answer: Not quite. The meaning of life. What is going on with me? How should I act to find answers to the questions? This type of questions.

Question: So something did not satisfy you?

Answer: Sure, I was dissatisfied with meaninglessness.

Comment: Scientific work is pointless, as is…

My Response: Of course, all that is…

Question: Was there some kind of premonition that it had to be somewhere, that you must seek it?

Answer: In general, it is somewhere because nature itself does not tolerate this emptiness. It screams outright, screams there is a goal and there is truth, and it is for everyone although each person may have their own, but one can find it.

Question: Did you feel this inner cry?

Answer: Yes, of course.

Question: Did you reach a point where if you could not achieve your goal, there was no point in living?

Answer: Definitely. For many years it was meaningless.

Question: How did you come out of these states?

Answer: It is not easy, but I think a lot of people are still in such a state.

The most important thing is to understand that it does not depend on you, it is given to you from above, it is a gift from nature. And you must keep looking for answers to the question of your fate.

Comment: That is, on a positive note, you keep going, you are not stopping.

My Response: Absolutely, yes.

Question: How long do these states last: “If I do not find it, life is not worth living”? Are these statements internal?

Answer: I have had it for decades.

Question: What is the most important moment in your life?

Answer: The most important moment was when I found my teacher. I realized that a great happiness had befallen me now.

Question: In all the time that you have been studying Kabbalah, have you ever regretted it?

Answer: No. How could it have happened?

Comment: Probably the person asking may have doubts.

My Response: Doubts, meaning to forget and fall asleep?

Comment: I do not know, maybe there is something else.

My Response: I am not hiding from anything, and I am not turning a blind eye to anything; there simply is nothing else.

Question: You have been studying for a long time. More than forty years, nearly fifty. Was there no moment of doubt? Have you ever regretted it? Or were there some doubts like if you were in the right place?

Answer: No, such depth and horizons are revealed to you that you have nothing more to look for. Either you give it up, or you stay with it.

Question: So you never had any doubts, and you went along with it. But you did go through different states, right?

Answer: Of course.

Question: Why are these states given on the path?

Answer: To test yourself.

Question: So, you were questioning yourself?

Answer: Yes. “Do I need it?”

Question: “Am I in the right place?” Did you ask yourself this?

Answer: “Am I in the right place?” Not really. Whether I have the right sources, whether the methodology is correct, whether I should behave this way—all such questions were there.

Question: How did you answer these questions?

Answer: My answer was that I did not believe in anything, and therefore—to check.

Question: Is there anything in life you regret most and would like to take back and do differently?

Answer: Yes, I would like to take back and redo absolutely everything except my choice in life. That is, the choice itself is correct, but its implementation could have been more intense.

When I Am Hated

294.2Question: When you feel that you are hated, what is your internal reaction?

Answer: I need to look at why I caused such a reaction.

Question: So you think about why you triggered that reaction?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Let’s say you find the reason. What is next?

Answer: I must correct myself.

Question: What does this correction mean?

Answer: Correction means improving myself so that next time there would be no reason to hate me for it.

Question: Is hatred actually a reaction of egoism?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Fully, absolutely?

Answer: Definitely.

Question: So today you have a different conversation with your own egoism?

Answer: Yes.

Question: You often say that the Creator is jealous. Are you jealous? What do you feel when your students leave you for another teacher?

Answer: Completely indifferent!

Comment: That is hard to understand. You invested in the student, watched him grow…

Answer: I did everything I could to bring him closer to the truth. And if he ultimately feels his place is not among my students, that is his right.

How could I turn a student into a slave? That would be far worse than any wrongdoing, it would be stealing his freewill! That is it! It is almost like removing him from the pedestal of being a human.

Why Do Our Plans Make the Creator Laugh?

610.2Question: There is a joke about a man asking God: “Lord, what is the best way to make You laugh?” God answers: “Tell me about your plans.”

Why do our plans make the Creator laugh?

Answer: Because when a person makes plans, he considers himself above what is happening, as if he can plan the future. This is not justified at all. Therefore, of course, it makes Him laugh.

Question: Let’s be realistic. A person makes plans for the summer, for a vacation. I write down a plan for the day, what I have to do today, and so on. Is this called making plans?

Answer: Remember what Woland said? That a person cannot program himself for the future. To do this, he must know what will happen at least 1,000 years in advance.

I would not say that we can program anything.

Question: Is it possible to live without plans?

Answer: It is possible to live without plans if you put your plans aside and accept the plans of the next, higher level.

Question: What kind of plans are these? By what plan do I live then?

Answer: You live by the plan of the upper nature, the Creator.

Question: And what kind of plan is this?

Answer: This means that all you can imagine is that you only want one thing: to be in close contact with Him.

Question: And this no longer makes Him laugh?

Answer: This does not make Him laugh. You only want to achieve this, and what will happen is unimportant for you. The main thing is that you want only these plans to be realized in you.

Question: Are you not even interested in knowing what the Creator’s plans are? Do you just completely devote yourself?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can a person live like that?

Answer: Are you truly going to check His plans?

Question: I really cannot. But still, it may be scary for someone to even pronounce it. What if He has such plans that…

Answer: Whatever they are, these are already the upper plans.

Question: So it is about my complete annulment before the upper one?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Does this make the Creator laugh?

Answer: The Creator rejoices.

Question: Can you tell why He “bends” me like that?

Answer: So that you would want consciously to change your plans.

Question: So, I take my soul and stifle it?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can I say that this is all my pride, that we are now talking about pride by and large?

Answer: Of course.

Comment: And the Creator wants him to…

My Response: Remove it by himself.

Comment: The operation that He performs on us is practically without anesthesia.

My Response: A person must realize that this is what is bad in him and interferes with him.

Question: And there are no painkillers here? Is it necessary to go through the pain?

Answer: Yes.

Question: What is more important: the result itself or the planning process?

Answer: I would say both, of course. But the main thing is still the result.

Question: And when the plans fall apart, for example. Many people’s plans fall apart, and today many of those have fallen apart. Can a person react to this differently than he reacts? In a calmer way somehow.

Answer: It depends on his preparation. If he is already prepared in advance for the fact that all his plans will not come true and he will have to change them to the plans of the Creator, then he will survive this calmly.

Question: That is, I plan, but what will happen is what the Creator wants?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this the correct beginning of the phrase: “I plan”?

Answer: It is necessary that a person plans. But he must convince himself that what will come true anyway are the plans of the Creator—not his.

Question: So I do what I want, and it will be as the Creator decides?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this how we should live? Is this the right message?

Answer: Yes. You always add: “If the Creator wills.”

There Are No Wars in the Creator’s Plans

If You Want to Live Long

628.2Question: Following the war that began on October 7th, people in Israel began coming to cardiology departments with heart problems, not with heart attacks or blocked arteries, but with what is called “broken heart syndrome.” In Hebrew, it is tismun et lev shavur.

Its symptoms resemble a heart attack, but it is not a heart attack. The shape of the heart changes, its function is impaired, and instead of contracting, it expands. This condition results from adrenaline being released into the blood during prolonged grief or stress.

Doctors recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting exercise, reducing stress, lightening work demands, pursuing hobbies, takingvacations, etc., but for a modern person who is always on the go, stressed, and trying to find their place in life, these recommendations do not seem realistic.

How can we not “break” our hearts amidst everything going on around us?

Answer: To do that, we need to understand that everything happening is nature’s response to our behavior. We cannot help ourselves unless we act precisely according to nature’s laws.

Question: What if I knew that my behavior and relationships with others affect all these stresses and wars? What would result from this?

Answer: Then I would behave differently. I would avoid stress and conflicts with others. Meaning, I would behave normally so that there would be no clashes.

Question: It is interesting that there is physical pain like torture, suffering, and imprisonment, yet people come out of that alive and sometimes live to be 120 and remain healthy. But here, emotional stress ends life. What is this, why is that?

Answer: Our bodies are adapted to physical suffering but not to emotional or moral suffering. We cannot endure that.

Question: Why not? After all the body is healthy?

Answer: Because such suffering goes beyond our natural life, our body.

Question: So a higher function is disrupted while the earthly one remains intact?

Answer: Yes.

Question: So even with a healthy body, roughly speaking, I can pass away?

Answer: Yes, people lived in conditions beyond our imagination.

Question: And then, bang, it is all over. Does this mean we have some higher component within us?

Answer: Yes, you can survive life if you have a goal. If you can elevate that goal above suffering and limitations, you can endure anything.

Question: So you grasp this spirit and survive, but your body can give up?

Answer: The body will not give up if you hold on to this force above life.

Question: So you connect these ideas?

Answer: Of course. A person must see a purpose ahead of him, a reason for enduring suffering.

Question: Then the body will hold on?

Answer: Yes. The problem is that in today’s life, people do not see that purpose.

Question: Does this apply even to a simple goal? For example, centenarians often seem to have a simple goal, they hold on to it, and their body follows. Does this also apply to simple goals and not just lofty ones?

Answer: Yes, they may have their sheep, goats, or a dog.

Comment: Yes, the fresh air, nature. And they live.

My Response: Exactly.

Comment: There are many movies now about elderly people living to 100 years or more in remote places like forests and mountains. You wonder how they manage—and yet they do. They live without hospitals or doctors.

My Response: Right. If they wake up knowing they need to do certain things, that is enough to keep them going.

Question: Even just feeding themselves?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Should we also learn to feel another’s pain?

Answer: Yes, we must learn to feel others’ pain because that creates a positive field of mutual connection around us, which is essential for survival.

Question: Can one find meaning in emotional suffering?

Answer: People often find deep meaning in suffering. But suffering should lead to a result whether it is creating literature, music, or other expressions. Much of art is rooted in suffering. A person must change their attitude toward life and develop a new life philosophy.

Question: You attribute all this to suffering?

Answer: Suffering drives humanity forward.

Question: Is it possible to accept suffering?

Answer: Most people accept suffering; they cannot resist it. But some individuals suppress their suffering and reach the next level.

Question: Do we ever reach the root of suffering, why it happens?

Answer: The root of suffering is actually quite foolish: it lies in the rejection of suffering itself. When I believe that what I am experiencing should not be happening to me, I suffer.

Question: So if I accept it, I will not suffer?

Answer: Exactly, then you will adjust to that level of life.

Question: Why am I given all these sufferings?

Answer: They are given to make you reflect on your life. You need to see whether you are the source of your own suffering and how you can rise above it. Once you transcend the cause of your suffering, you can free yourself from it and gain a new perspective.

Question: And what will I see?

Answer: You will see that your suffering is purely philosophical. Where suffering exists, there is a philosophy tied to it, a belief that suffering is undeserved. But if you accept it, you can rise above it.

Question: At the same time, understanding that these experiences are part of a divine plan is essential?

Answer: Yes, that is what the Creator wants you to understand.

Question: Should this understanding be both in the heart and the mind? And is that when you…

Answer: I agree with Him and I follow this path.

Why the Creator Did Not Teach Us to Swim in the Ocean of Life

537Question: A fish asks God, “Lord, can you make the ocean smaller?” “Why?” God is surprised. “Because I don’t know how to swim.” God replies, “Learn to swim, and the ocean will seem smaller to you.”

We live in this world and often complain about life. Essentially, we do not know how to swim in this ocean of life. How can we learn to swim?

Answer: We do not have any natural abilities for it. We were created in egoism. We can criticize each other, but we rarely think well of one another. Achieving a state where each person is a friend, companion, and brother to others is, in essence, a fantasy.

Question: Then, why did the Creator fill this “aquarium” and place us in it like fish without teaching us how to swim?

Answer: He gave us the opportunity to learn on our own.

Question: What does this give me?

Answer: It gives us the chance to be the creators of our own lives.

Question: So, I am essentially a human with “fins” and “gills,” equipped for this water, but I do not know how to swim?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Do I need to develop these “fins and gills”?

Answer: Yes.

Question: How and when do we come to understand this?

Answer: We understand it when we have no other choice. Either we line up and march toward the cliff or learn to swim.

Question: So do we need to be brought to this dead-end?

Answer: Yes.

Question: How should we correctly perceive this ocean of life?

Answer: It is open before us. It all depends on how we relate to each other. That is still a problem. We always think that if others do well, it will somehow be worse for us.

How can one convince a person that this is not the case? On the contrary, let us work on ourselves so that everyone feels good and you feel good with everyone, and everyone feels good with you. But people resist this idea.

Question: So even here, the fish asks God, “Make the ocean smaller.” It does not say, “Give me the ability; teach me to swim.” So, we are not asking, “Teach us to swim in this ocean.” We are not asking this of the Creator, or are we?

Answer: No.

Question: Are we asking for the ocean to be different?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this also inherent in us?

Answer: Of course it is inherent in us! We cannot change ourselves. Our egoism is truly the opposite of nature.

Question: What does it mean spiritually to learn to swim?

Answer: Spiritually “learning to swim” means feeling the sea of the Creator’s love around you and knowing how to remain in it.

Question: In this love?

Answer: Yes, and when we finally learn to move our arms and legs a little, we will start to understand that we know how to swim.

But we can truly learn to “swim” only when we turn solely to the Creator. Because the sea, the ocean, the waves, the sky, the earth, everything, is Him. We need to learn to be within Him. And to be within Him means to exist in the qualities of bestowal, love, and connection with everyone. That is what it means to learn to “swim.”

How to Get Up from Your Knees

79.02Question: There is a parable about a strong wind blowing at a tree, bending and almost breaking it. The tree told the wind: “You’re going to break me.” The wind answered: “No, I will make you stronger, your roots will strengthen, and you will become even more powerful after the storm.”

How can we realize that life is like this right now, that we are being broken precisely to strengthen our roots?

Answer: This must be realized. If we say that the Creator is good and does good, then we have no choice but to understand all His actions as good that bring only good.

Question: That is, those strengthen our roots?

Answer: Yes, we have lived through such upheavals throughout our history, such changes, that we must believe that special, good days are ahead, which we must accept with love.

Question: Do you really think that everything that has happened to us has strengthened our roots?

Answer: Undoubtedly!

Question: Among our people and other nations in general?

Answer: Yes, undoubtedly.

Question: But when one still feels broken, he is on his knees. How does he get up from his knees?

Answer: A person must think. Think about who I am, what I am, what I am for, who controls me, and what I am meant for. The person will see that all this prepares him for real correction. When he rises above his nature, the Creator awaits him there.

Question: We were just talking about a tree strengthening its roots. The wind and the storm strengthen the roots of the tree. What do you call a person’s “human roots,” which are strengthened by all suffering?

Answer: I call a person’s roots his connection with like-minded people. What else does he have? Only this. If these roots are correctly connected, then we have a really strong tree.

Question: In other words, we can say that we, who came out of this unified state, should return to it, but after going through all the suffering, winds, and storms?

Answer: Yes. There is nothing you can do about it.

Question: Is this the plan?

Answer: Yes, because otherwise, we would be unable to find out our essence or the Creator and direct ourselves to Him.

Question: Summing up everything, you say that our roots are the connection between us, and the goal is to direct ourselves to the Creator. What practical advice do you have for strengthening the roots?

Question: Is this our training?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is this how we train our muscles, with thoughts of where do I come from, what do I live for, and so on?

Answer: Yes, all the time.

Question: Is this your advice to absolutely anyone?
