Follow in the Footsteps of the Forefathers

282.01Question: You say that in our nation, due to the subtlety of the Aviut (coarseness of the Kli), there is a readiness to perceive the spiritual idea. So how can we actually implement it so that people engage with it not only externally?

Answer: The readiness of the people of Israel (who are supposed to be the first to receive the Torah) stems from the fact that they are the subtlest part in the souls that began to emerge during the time of Abraham. At that time, out of all the souls in the world, this specific part that felt a connection to the upper light manifested itself.

From the collective assembly of souls, a kind of a “tribe” began to take shape, a group, a small handful of souls who, who due to their subtlety, began to correct themselves and managed to unite.

Who then are the “sons of Abraham” and the entire group that descended from him in the corporeal world? They are the consequences of the subtle souls emerging one after another again and again but on increasingly higher levels of Aviut.

In our world, this happens through the natural succession of fathers and sons. In one way or another, the souls that came from Abraham were clothed in the bodies of his descendants in the first, second, third generation, and so on.

And today, due to mutual inclusion, there are subtle souls among the nations of the world who feel the part of Israel that has mingled with them. And who knows the current state of the tribes of Israel at all; where are they all? We do not know this.

Suddenly, we are told: “Did you hear? In Pakistan, there are 25 million people related to the people of Israel.” And indeed, in the coming years, things will be revealed that we cannot even imagine today.

Ultimately, based on what we know today, we must certainly say that the part called “Jews” in this world is obligated to reach mutual guarantee (Arvut) by the root of their soul. This is their duty.

At the same time, there are parts of the nation that apparently do not bear this obligation. Therefore, we do not see them and do not know about them. Suddenly, Ethiopians or others appear among the nation. Many have not yet been revealed because their time has not come yet, even among the people of Israel themselves.

Impartial Dissemination

271Question: Why should one not introduce emotion when explaining things to the masses if it can help attract an audience?

Answer: The point is that when you introduce emotion into an explanation, you introduce yourself, either your empty Kelim or Kelim that have been filled. But this is something personal.

And when you speak rationally, you are talking about facts, which are seemingly above emotion. Facts are facts. They are like faith above reason. Whether you like it or not, it is the law, it is reality. Then you pass it on to others as something independent of you or of them.

You are simply giving people the opportunity to see the law; whether they want to be for it or against it, that is their business. If not, we will enter another round of suffering. And the person will translate this into their own feelings.

I would say that this kind of dissemination is the best: you do not look inspired by what you are saying, but you speak as if your “self” has been removed from the topic altogether.

You are like a mechanism issuing information, and that is it. It does not matter whether you belong to the nation of Israel or to the nations of the world, you are like an auxiliary force, a sort of angel from heaven, telling people what is happening.

This is best, because then everyone feels that you are impartial.

But by being impartial, you speak to people in a way that awakens feelings in them. This is precisely the form we must find in dissemination, even though it both depends on us and does not depend on us.

Because life will soon become such that a person will immediately feel that here you have touched their innermost point.

What Is Happening Today?

294.2We are now at a point in time when the world is ready to embrace the method of spiritual correction. If such thoughts and awareness are awakening in the world( as we have seen recently), it is a clear sign that the world is indeed ready.

If, under the pressure of suffering and the question of life’s meaning, people begin to ask “What is the point of the Jewish people’s existence?”, then the answer to that can also begin to be understood.

Humanity is now undergoing very deep, powerful processes. The thoughts circulating around the world, especially in a world interconnected through modern communication, are once again leading to the mixing of Reshimot from the time of the breaking of the vessels.

What is happening today? The world will soon unite around the idea that there is a certain nation, as Haman once said, that interferes with everyone, and that the solution is simply to eliminate it.

This idea will soon become fashionable. Every “cultured” person will begin to speak of it in a respectable, acceptable way, and present himself as understanding the real structure of the world and identifying the source of its evil.

He will express his desire to fix the world, to make it better, by surgically removing the “evil” from it. This will appear very clear, very rational, very scientific, supported by historical and philosophical arguments, and it will be presented as something real and correct.

After all, the Germans were also the most cultured and developed nation at the time of the Holocaust. And that was not by chance. That is how this entire philosophy developed, though it is not new; it has existed since the time of the destruction of the temple.

So if such questions arise: “What is the cause, and what is the answer?”, it means the world is now more ready to hear.

A Willingness to Listen

267.01If I weren’t involved in dissemination, I wouldn’t leave the house. Ever. If we start asking ourselves whether the world is expecting this from us, whether it will look at it favorably…

How could the world possibly look at us favorably?! From the start, we must completely throw out any possibility of trying to accommodate that! We should only care about one thing: how to present ourselves as pleasantly as possible in their eyes, but without compromising our mission. No distortion, no substitution of the task.

“As pleasantly as possible” means that since it’s hard for them to grasp our idea, we should make it as easy as possible for them to perceive it. But aside from that, we must be like flint. This is what is entrusted to us, and this is what I do. People receive it just fine.

I have given lectures in various countries before thousands of people who had no favorable attitude toward me, toward Israel, or toward Kabbalah.

But when I explained that there is a difference between me and them, and that I had come to speak precisely about that difference, about the purpose of the world, why it exists, what I must do in it, and what you must do in it, and why for thousands of years we have been in this opposition, where it comes from and for what reason—they listened!

There is a willingness to listen because the problem is evident. Moreover, they responded calmly, without shouting, without voicing opposition not against me nor against the topic. They listened from beginning to end. The explanation was simple. This should always be our motto, the central message of every one of our presentations.

Otherwise, why did you come? To talk about the upper worlds? Why? Baal HaSulam says: What do I care how many angels are in heaven and what their names are? You came to speak about what truly concerns us, and that it concerns us for a reason. And the audience will listen.

Clarifications and Corrections

276.02Question: In striving to achieve mutual guarantee, is it possible that we are directing too much effort outward instead of acting within ourselves?

Answer: This might be valid if we didn’t find in practice that engaging in external dissemination unites us, gives us confidence, strength, and upliftment, which we receive back from the communities we serve.

By building something outwardly, we thereby build ourselves. It is impossible to say what the correct balance should be. We try. This, essentially, is a kind of action called “we will do and we will hear.”

We see that we are constantly undergoing changes. One must act according to the understanding of one’s state. What else can we do? This is our path, because seeking and discovering is that practical work through which we carry out clarifications and corrections.

To aspire toward the final state is good. But by discovering different things now and performing tiny actions, we generate details of perception without which the end of correction cannot be felt.

The difference between the end of correction and the beginning of creation lies only in the added details of our perception (Avchanot), which we collect along the way.

You return to the same state, only inside yourself you become more diverse and more refined; more opposite details of perception and distinguishable inner qualities appear within you.

This is what allows you, instead of being a point merged with the Creator as you once were, to become a Partzuf and truly existing on His level.

Search for Correct Forms of Dissemination

231.01Question: What do we lack more in dissemination: physical or internal efforts?

Answer: We lack both internal dissemination, inside ourselves, and dissemination in the group—the group to each one, and each one to the group—and dissemination outside the group, to the people.

We must disseminate to the people both internally, in thoughts, when we think about it and want it to happen, which is called prayer for the society, and also in the form accepted in the world, in action. In other words, both in our spiritual plane at the level of thoughts, desires, and in the plane of physical, corporeal actions.

We must look for such forms so that a person accepts what is good for him, what he will not accept in any other way. Just as suitable food is specially prepared for a sick person: for example, more liquid, not too fatty, etc., so we must do this. Our task is to prepare medicine for the people in such a way that they can swallow it.

But this does not mean that we should lag behind. After all, in the case of a sick person, you do not waste time; you immediately give him what is good for him, but in a form in which he can accept it so that everything is better absorbed in him. It is the same way here!

Therefore, we need to distribute delicately and slowly, while taking into account the capabilities of people.

Inner Exile

747.01The sons of the people of Israel who left Egypt continue their correction during the forty-year journey through the desert with the help of the Torah they received, enter the land of Israel, and reach the level called the First Temple.

After that, they must mix with an even greater Aviut (coarseness), which increases both within them and among the nations of the world. This pertains, of course, to the system of souls, but it is evident from history that corresponding processes occur in physical bodies as well.

As a result, each person from Israel feels an addition of Aviut, and then what is called an inner exile takes place when they are no longer able to remain in the degree of adhesion with the Creator that they had attained.

Now they are capable of less; new desires grow stronger within them. This means that a person enters into a connection with the nations of the world within themselves, and in accordance with that, external processes unfold that lead to destruction.

Destruction means that we mentally disconnect from that perception of life in which we are united with one force, with one thought, and we begin to fall into the multitude of desires.

The Merit of the Fathers

631.3The purpose of creation is intended for all souls—each individually and all together. However, it is impossible for everyone to attain this goal collectively because in some people the condition of Arvut (Mutual Guarantee) is initially unable to awaken immediately; it can only emerge after the prior work done by other souls.

Baal HaSulam writes that the forefathers did not need the condition of Arvut because their souls were subtle, and due to their exaltedness and purity, they were already in Dvekut (Adhesion) with the Creator without performing practical actions, that is, without carrying out preliminary corrections or fulfilling commandments.

They did not need to reach the condition of “we shall do and we shall hear” because by virtue of their subtlety, their souls were originally ready to exist in mutual guarantee without making the efforts that are required from us with our coarse Aviut.

Due to their purity, subtle souls receive the Torah, and the mutual guarantee is realized within them. This leads to the fulfillment of the condition “love your neighbor as yourself.” Then the light of the Torah clothes within them and they dwell in adhesion with the Creator.

After our forefathers attained this, the merit of the fathers arose for the sons. In other words, those souls that are now capable of joining the subtle souls with their more coarse Aviut use these pure souls by means of connection and mutual inclusion.

Therefore, the law of mutual guarantee is also realized for them, but only after performing certain work, prior actions. What are these actions? Everything that can lead them to the condition of mutual guarantee.

And once they attain this, they merit receiving the Torah, that is, the light, the system of correction of their Aviut for the purpose of achieving the principle “love your neighbor as yourself” when the Creator will already dwell in their common Kli (vessel).

For receiving the Torah, it is enough to fulfill the condition “we shall do and we shall hear,” that is, the agreement that the power of mutual guarantee should exist so that we should want to fulfill it, so that this ability would come from above. And upon receiving the power of the Torah, we begin to carry it out, and then we become “as one man with one heart” and a single Kli (vessel). We merit receiving the Torah, and then we must fulfill it, that is, begin the corrections.

Fulfill Your Duty without Any Calculations

625.06Question: We understand that it is us who lack something, not the nations of the world, and as soon as we take a step forward, it will be revealed in them as well. What is it that we lack?

Answer: We lack a Jew like you who has access to the people that is fulfilling the task placed upon him! That is, you must pull yourself together, gather your strength, and start doing what is necessary for correction!

Question: In what sense?

Answer: Without senses and explanations! Bring to each and every one of your people the knowledge of what our duty is.

Comment: But they do not accept it.

My Response: It does not matter that they do not accept it. You must do the work without making calculations. The results of it should not be visible to our eyes at all. The consequences come differently.

From your work in this small country aimed at awakening the people, you may not see any results here. But suddenly, Americans will start talking about it, and then it will be accepted by our whole nation. Why? Because of our intermingling and mutual incorporation with foreign cultures.

How do you know in what form it must come? You must do what you are obligated to do. That is why many say: “What do you want from us? It is all true, but what can I do?” A person responds like this even without knowing Kabbalah. But why do you, knowing all this, say the same thing?

All these things are not theoretical! They are given to us so we may fulfill them. The Torah is not a subject to study like philosophy. There is nothing in it that is subject to theoretical contemplation! It is subject to realization. It is our life, it is the most general law of the universe that encompasses all other laws.

Understand the Creator’s Plan

235In the generations from Adam to Noah and from Noah onward, both in the people of Israel and among the nations of the world, the Aviut (the thickness of the desire) was still very small.

Abraham is unique in his generation in that a yearning for the Creator was revealed in him despite the fact that his father Terach was an idol-worshipper and engaged in Avoda Zara (foreign work), meaning he believed that there are many forces in the world besides the Creator that each act independently.

If a person “sees” that all these forces govern him for better or worse, he turns to each of them. He does not consider that behind them stands another force, one that unites them all, possesses thought, has a program and a goal for humanity, and uses all these forces merely as its messengers, messengers that have no program of their own, no free will, and no particular relation to a person. He does not believe that everything is governed by a single force.

This in essence is the qualitative difference between Abraham and his father. The approach that one must believe there is a single force and seek it replaces the former view of nature as a collection of many forces. This refers to a qualitative effort and distinction that requires a special purification of the “body,” that is, the desire to receive.

Abraham taught this to his followers; he taught that behind all the forces stands a single thought, a single desire. None of the individual forces contains good or evil; behind them is one thought that is good and benevolent to both the wicked and the righteous, which leads a person to the goal.

Good and evil, though perceived differently by us, serve one purpose. We must understand the plan of the Creator and accept it, relate to it rationally, correctly, and develop ourselves accordingly.

The Creator demands that we participate in our development from our own independent desire. This is the only way we can be truly independent; it is by strengthening ourselves on the path of development, that is, by accepting His program and realizing it.

In essence, no one in the generation of Abraham, except Abraham himself, grasped this idea. People did not yet have a prepared foundation within their souls to reveal the true picture of reality. Abraham, however, came to this through purification, that is, a special quality in the soul.
