Question: In which language should we read the Torah or The Book of Zohar? Do we have to learn the language of Kabbalah?

Answer: The language that we use in our lessons is very limited.

Therefore, if you listen to Hebrew in the background while listening in your mother tongue, you will gradually begin to naturally understand it. We have quite a few students who speak Hebrew very well as a result of studying the wisdom of Kabbalah.

There are words and expressions from ancient and more modern sources in Kabbalistic Hebrew which cannot be conveyed in translation. Therefore, it is better to accept the Kabbalistic terms just the way they are in Hebrew. Then you will not be confused with our world and with corporeal terminology. You will immediately apply them to objects or actions of the upper world.

Question: What is special about the Hebrew and the Aramaic languages that doesn’t exist in other languages? How do they complement each other?

Answer: Suppose that it were possible to translate the entire wisdom of Kabbalah into the English language and learn it in this language since it is the most widespread language used today. It would certainly be simpler and easier for all people in the world, since, in principle, millions of people could learn the wisdom of Kabbalah.

However, this would not succeed because there would be great confusion between the spiritual roots and their progeny. There is no language in the world that is connected to higher spiritual roots except for Hebrew and Aramaic. All languages changed during their development except Hebrew and Aramaic.

If someone from modern Greece were to encounter someone from ancient Greece, they would not understand each other. Even the French of the Middle Ages and modern French are as different from each other as day and night. And that is how it is with all languages, except for the English language, which has not gone through such sharp revolutionary changes since the British are more conservative.

The Hebrew language is entirely derived from spiritual roots, so it is unchanged. If we were to meet and talk today with a person from 2,000 to 3,000 years in the past, we would talk with him in the same Hebrew.

Of course, he would not understand neologisms like: airplane, helicopter, pistol, and so forth. But all the words taken from spiritual roots remained absolutely identical, and the language and grammar have not changed over time.

We read books that were written 2,000 to 3,000 years ago, for example, the Sefer Yetzira by Abraham that was written 3,500 years ago, the Torah that was written 3,000 years ago, and the Babylonian Talmud that was written 2,500 years ago. Nothing has changed in them. We read them and everything is understandable.

The language of the wisdom of Kabbalah was developed by Adam, the first to discover the system of higher management of our world. He gave names to all physical objects according to their spiritual roots from which descended all forces and forms, all objects and interactions in our world.

That is how the two Kabbalistic languages were revealed: Hebrew and the language, which is its opposite, its inseparable partner Aramaic.

The Hebrew language has existed for around 6,000 years, whereas Aramaic developed during the period of ancient Babylon and is a reflection of the Hebrew language. The Aramaic language was not discovered before the Babylonian period since the ego had not yet been discovered in the human species. It began to appear only with the flourishing of the ego.

All of the ancient books were written in two languages, Hebrew and Aramaic. The Babylonian Talmud was mostly written in Aramaic since this was the spoken language in those times. They used Hebrew solely for writing spiritual texts, while Aramaic was used for writing earthly texts. So both languages existed together, supporting each other mutually. People who lived in those times used the Aramaic language in daily life and the Hebrew language in their spiritual writings.

Question: You once said that when a person attains spirituality, knowledge of the alphabet comes to him automatically. Does this happen by learning the wisdom of Kabbalah in English, in Russian, or in other languages also?

Answer: When a person attains spirituality, he will know the Hebrew language; he will feel it. This is a special type of attainment in which everything is revealed to him as it was for Adam.

However, this natural way of learning the language happens only for special souls. After all, when Adam understood the interaction of the higher forces, they began to take shape in forms, in pictures, so he saw how they became an alphabet, 22 letters, patterns; each one symbolizing a particular force, a connection between matter and Light.

Therefore, it is still desirable to know the language in order to read the wisdom of Kabbalah in Hebrew.

Question: Why was the world created through the second letter “Bet – ב” and not through the first letter “Aleph – א”?

Answer: In the hierarchy of development, the letter “Aleph” appears much later in the world of Atzilut. In the upper world, the letter “Yud – י״ appears first and the letter ״Bet״ created our world in the upper world, “Bereshit” (in the beginning) because this letter specifically teaches about the beginning.

In the preface to The Book of Zohar, the article, “The Letters of Rabbi Hamnuna-Saba,” tells about all the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Question: In that article, it is said that every letter “approached” the Creator and “asked” to begin the creation of the world, and the Creator found some defect in every letter. What does it mean that the letter approached and asked “begin with me”?

Answer: It means that the Creator elicited the attitude of each letter to His Light, whether or not it was capable of being the beginning of the program of the development of His creation. It became clear that only the letter ״Bet״ was “capable” of creating the world because the word “Bracha” (blessing) begins with it.

In the letter ״Bet״ there is a connection between the letter itself, which already is a Kli (creature), and the Creator (Light). An inner connection like this doesn’t exist in any other letter. Without a blessing, without that intrinsic characteristic that exists in the letter ״Bet,״ the rest of the letters would have been cut off from the Light and would not be able to conduct or hold its energy, its power.

Question: Why do certain languages and nations die out, fade away, and disappear?

Answer: It is because these systems end, complete their job, and disappear just like a stage in a rocket launch, it fires and that’s it.

The Hebrew language, on the other hand, remains because it stems from the root of the upper leadership and describes it. All the 22 forces (the letters of the Hebrew alphabet) and the five final letters describe the system of leadership from the initial roots from which the upper forces descend and manage our world.

Question: Given that the Light passes through the letters should we weigh every word we use when communicating with others so we match our attributes and feelings?

Answer: Of course. If we spoke on that level, I could say a few words to you and when you heard what I said, you could immediately feel what I wanted to say to you in the spiritual world. I would connect to the same source from which I conveyed to you a written or oral message, for example, which stems from that source.

By connecting to that source, you could perceive my exact perception of that source and we would both share the same feeling. This is called equivalence of form of properties.

This is actually how we should write, speak with each other, and connect to each other. And in the same manner, we should connect with the Creator.

Question: In what way is the spoken language of Kabbalah different from the written language?

Answer: They are very different. The written language is much higher than the spoken language. It also appeared much later. It is a language that expresses the spiritual attainments of the person who writes and not his feelings. This is the reason that it differs from the spoken language by which a person conveys his feelings, intonations, expressions, sighs, and so on.

There are five groups of letters in Hebrew: guttural, palatal, of the tongue, of the jaws, and of the teeth. When using texts, all this disappears and the groups of letters are classified differently: the first nine letters stem from the Sefirot of the lower seven of Bina, the next nine letters stem from the Sefirot Zeir Anpin, and the last four stem from the Sefira of Malchut. There are five more letters, the final letters MaNTZePaCH, altogether 27 letters.

This is a totally different tool and a different form of expression of the same forces that are conveyed by sounds.

In addition to transmission of vocal information or written information from one person to another, there is another way of conveying information, substantive transfer, that is not used today. It was used during the time of the Temple when people also communicated by offering sacrifices, which is a totally different language.

Comment: There is a complementation of the letters in Hebrew in the form of vowel marks under the letters or markings in the shape of crowns above them, which indicate where one should put the stress and help a person read the words correctly.

Answer: All the languages lose their basis since they don’t fully convey all the information of a letter or a word, but in Hebrew it is not so.

In Hebrew all the letters are consonants with vowel marks below them which indicate the missing vowels in the written language. There are also different signs above the letters in the shape of crowns which convey forms of musical notes so you can convey everything by such an illustration of information.

In Hebrew there are also many marks inside the letters, beside the letters, and between the letters. They are the subtext that is not conveyed by sounds but by a pause in tone, by raising or lowering the tone of speech. The overt text is the notes and the covert text are the signs, which convey a second layer of information that is the subtext.

Today, however, we don’t use all these signs because the consonants are enough for a person who is used to the language.

Question: Why was the most important book in the Torah written in the historical language? After all, they could have used the language of the Sefirot. Why did Moses choose this language?

Answer: The Torah was written in a universal language. It includes all the other languages behind which the wisdom of Kabbalah is concealed. Those who study Kabbalah use it and for the ordinary reader it is not essential.

Moses wrote the Torah from his level of attainment, but he had to convey his attainment to the people, so the Torah was written in this form.

Question: Do the four languages (Tanach, Halacha, Aggadah, Kabbalah) match the levels of the name HaVaYaH?

Answer: Certainly. The four-letter name of the Creator, “Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey” or HaVaYaH, absolutely includes within it all the elements of the world, both the spiritual world and our world.

So the four letters of the name of the Creator characterize the four levels of the evolution of matter under the influence of the Upper Light and correspond to the four main languages.
