One, Unique, and Unified

610.2However, in Him, wisdom, pleasure, sweetness and acerbity, operation and operator, and other such different and opposite forms are all contained as one in His simple light. There are no differentiations among them whatsoever, as is the term “One, Unique, and Unified.”

“One” indicates a single evenness. “Unique” implies that everything that extends from Him, all these multiplicities, are in Him as single as His self. “Unified” shows that although He performs the multiple operations, one force performs all these, and they all return and unite in the form of One. Indeed, this one form swallows all the forms that appear in His operations (Baal HaSulam, Study of the Ten Sefirot – Inner Observation, Part 1).

All three attributes “one, unique, and unified must join together in our attainment, in our feelings, and even in our desire, and we tune into them like a radio receiver. Then we begin to feel that these are the qualities of the Creator.

Moreover, their correct connection with one another gives us the understanding that it is not one, nor unique, nor unified, but all together.

Everything Comes Only From the Creator

507.03Question: How can I compel myself to investigate the upper worlds within myself, when this external world increasingly presses on me and tempts me with temptations and distracts me from the goal?

Answer: It is arranged so deliberately! Nothing is outside the will of the Creator, who specifically “washes” you in this way within your own egoism so that you may attain Him. Not a single thought or feeling arises in you that would hinder you. Everything is directed only toward attaining the unity and singularity of the Creator.

Question: But you say that the Creator does not exist, that He is only the measure of my attainment and revelation. Then who is it that “washes” me; is it myself?

Answer: No! It is the Creator who loves you in this way. He is the one who sets all this before you. You must turn to Him, “There is none else besides Him.” From Him alone come both the bad and the good.

Question: What tools are needed in order to investigate what is spoken of in Kabbalah?

Answer: Whoever engages in Kabbalah discovers these tools within himself.

Question: So a person is not born with these tools?

Answer: A person is born with a predisposition for them.

The Law of Root and Branch

707It is known that the nature of every branch is equal to its root. Therefore, the branch desires, loves, and covets every conduct in the root, and does not tolerate and hates any conduct that is not in the root. This is an unbreakable law that applies to every branch and its root. Because He is the root of all His creations, everything in Him, and which is extended directly from Him, is pleasurable and pleasant to us (Baal HaSulam, Study of the Ten Sefirot –  Inner Observation).

The upper force, the Creator, is the quality of bestowal. We love what exists in Him and not Him Himself. For example, I love to eat well, but I do not love to cook food; I want to have a lot of money, but I do not want to work hard.

We love to enjoy what is in the Creator. However, in order to attain this, we must acquire His very qualities, yet we cannot; for us it is completely unrealistic and seems very distant and unpleasant.

Question: In what way do I, and my nature as a branch, coincide with my root?

Answer: In that which is good in the Creator is also good for me. All the fulfillments represented by the upper Light are pleasant to me: He created me this way. The only problem is that I am opposite to the Creator in qualities.

Egoism Is Not an End in Itself, But a Means for Correction

629.3Question: What does the commandment “Do not do to others what is hateful to you” mean? How can it be universal for both the corporeal and the spiritual levels?

Answer: In order to master the upper world, we have been given egoism, and by transforming it we could adapt to the upper world.

Basically, egoism is an artificial state, so that by transforming it we would understand the structure of the spiritual world. Egoism is not an end in itself; in general, we do not have to correct it. It is a means of correction, an aid in adapting to the upper world.

No wonder, the Creator said “I created egoism.” He created it for man so that by gradually correcting it each time he would understand and reveal the spiritual world more and more.

Question: In the Kabbalistic method there are two principles: “Do not do to others what is hateful to you” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” What are these steps?

Answer: “Do not do to others what is hateful to you” is a correction of the egoism, meaning the termination of using it as an ego. While “Love your neighbor as yourself” is already a revolution, it is using egoism in the opposite direction, for the sake of others.

Questions about Spiritual Work—253

235Question: All the actions that we study in TES, is that what I take and read from my higher degree, from the ten, from the group? And then all of this comes together?

Answer: All of this comes together within each person. Therefore, he must be attuned so that his Kelim feel the influence of the light upon him.

Question: How can we extract the force of bestowal from the light?

Answer: We must do what the Kabbalists advise us. Then each time we will surely receive the correct answers, what to do in order to draw closer to one another and to the light.

Question: We always speak of the Kli as the organ that feels the entrances and exits of the light. How does it sense it?

Answer: A Kli is the desire to receive. And to the extent that it draws the light into itself and enjoys it, to that extent it feels the light.

A Branch is a Consequence of the Upper Root

709Question: What does Kabbalah mean by “branch“?

Answer: A branch is a consequence of the upper root. This includes our feelings and all corporeal objects. Everything that is in us is a branch from the Creator. It can be direct, or it can be inverse.

Question: What does the root control in relation to the branch?

Answer: Absolutely everything! The Creator controls us completely. If it even seems to us that there are actions that do not come from the Creator, it is only because we cannot imagine the overall picture of His control. Everything comes from Him either through direct influence or through reverse influence. But reverse influence depends on the qualities of a person.

Question: Does each person have their personal spiritual root?

Answer: Yes, each one has their own. This is what distinguishes us from one another. Everything else is only additions layered upon our spiritual root. We receive one upper light from the Creator, but in each of us it is interpreted, realized, and felt differently, depending on one’s personal root.

Education and Attainment in Kabbalah

219.01When we begin to study the wisdom of Kabbalah, at first, we do not understand the inner meaning of each word, nor do we reveal the upper force that stands behind it. But gradually, we begin to uncover deeper meaning.

That is, I am no longer simply reading a word, but I start to feel and reveal the spiritual object that stands behind it, gradually emerging as if from a fog.

This is how we slowly reach spiritual attainment. It turns out that there are two stages: education and attainment. Education means that we are studying, but have not yet attained, we are only approaching the meaning. And later, we begin to truly attain it.

The point is that attainment does not depend on how well a person has studied or how thoroughly they know everything written in the book. That is not important at all. What matters most is that one corrects one’s egoistic quality and transforms it from reception to bestowal, to love for others.

It may even happen that one is not very knowledgeable about the material, not particularly clever. But if they have corrected their attitude toward others, then within this corrected relationship they will sense spiritual concepts and attain them.

Question: How can I study if I cannot rely on my own mind, do not understand the meaning of what is written, and have never experienced spiritual attainment? For example, if I were learning Chinese, I would learn new words every day and gradually begin to understand what is written.

Answer: That is because, in the case of Chinese, you are dealing with a reality that you perceive. But Kabbalah speaks of a reality that you do not yet feel. Therefore, you can read these books for a thousand years and still not understand what they are talking about.

The whole question is: How can one attain the sensation of what one is reading about?

And this sensation is possible only on the condition that we acquire the quality of bestowal in addition to the quality of reception we were born with. We spend our entire lives developing these inborn receiving qualities, learning more and more about how to receive. All our thoughts in this world are only about how to obtain as much benefit as possible and avoid harm.

But now we need to unite with other people and start working for them, caring about giving them what benefits them and protecting them from harm, as if they were our own babies. However, when it comes to our own babies, we are driven by instinctive, natural love, the kind that parents in this world naturally possess. But regarding other people, we must develop such an attitude in opposition to our egoism and against its resistance. And this is not simple at all.

Yet, if we succeed in doing this, we will build a connection on a new level, above rejection. Below remains egoism, aversion to others, separation, but above all that, I build a connection with them.

Then between the minus below and the plus above, we create various forms of connection within which circulation begins and a new force emerges, a force called the upper force.

How to Attract the Upper Force?

939.02Question: You said that we have the possibility of attracting the force that will correct us.

But we study that this force comes by itself and gives us the possibility to raise MAN, to make certain actions. How can we attract it?

Answer: What is required from us are clarifications, which is what we must do besides study, and how to be interconnected with one another so that our forces will join and strengthen. This is what we must study and realize.

Question: How do we check whether our intention is directed to ourselves or for the sake of bestowal?

Answer: Keep checking and constantly ask yourself this question, and you will see how it will gradually be revealed within you.

Why Prayers Do Not Work

239Question: You say that prayers have existed for thousands of years, people have prayed for thousands of years. Have they have been praying incorrectly? Because we don’t really have much happiness, and we don’t we have much money.

Answer: Over thousands of years, we are gradually maturing toward the state where we will finally understand what true correction is. And it is in not asking for anything, but using what we already have. All the conditions are there for us to correct the world, and they lie in relating to one another with love. If you cannot do this, if you really cannot, then you may turn to the Creator.

Question: This is what prayer is?

Answer: Yes, and there is nothing else to ask for. Give me the ability to relate to another with love, as You relate to us.
