Prayer That Is Accepted On Atonement Day

562.02Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself (George Bernard Shaw).

My Response: This is not an easy task.

Question: Let’s say “finding yourself” is more or less clear: finding yourself in a profession… What do you mean by the words “creating yourself “?

Answer: Creating ourselves is what we are facing. In fact, this is not such a sky-high thing. This is the requirement that is imposed on us from our life, to make ourselves similar to the Creator.

Comment: I do not know what the Creator is, I do not know who He is…

My Response: This will be explained to you in detail. Write down: “The first condition is to love everyone.”

Question: So the first point is: Should I learn to love everyone? Does this mean to be similar to the Creator by and large?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is it a prayer if I write it down and look at it all the time?

Answer: Yes, that is a prayer. Imagine that you are like a parent, maybe strict, maybe kind, no matter which, but loving. The way such a parent treats his children, so you should treat people.

Question: At the moment when I read this daily and realize that I cannot, is this a prayer: “I cannot!”?

Answer: This is not a prayer, but a state when you check yourself and see how much you need to be corrected. Then you have already prepared some claims or requests for correction. So you wait for the day of atonement and present them.

Question: Is this the real prayer of Yom Kippur?

Answer: Yes. You judge yourself, you come and demand the Creator to correct you because you cannot correct yourself. The only one who can is Him. But only in accordance with your demands, requests, and pleas. So hurry up!

Question: You started from loving everyone. Is this, in principle, the basis of Yom Kippur?

Answer: Yes, it is called “Ahavat olam“—love of the world.

Question: Is this what I want to come to and I cannot, and I ask?

Answer: Absolutely! So get ready.

Happy Repentance (Teshuva)

962.3Repentance (Teshuva) is the main content of the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) because this is the main thing we need to do to return to the place, to the state, in which we existed before the sin of Adam. This is our goal and purpose, our duty to return to exactly the place where we were and then fell.

We were all in adhesion with the Creator, inside Him like an embryo in mother’s womb. Then we fell from this stage of adhesion into our egoism, and now we have to return from one pole to the other.

After all, now everyone thinks only about himself and cannot think about anyone else unless it is profitable for him. However, we are not able to take care of others selflessly, simply love and help each other by giving ourselves to others.
In order to return to the state we were in, we need to change our egoistic nature, which we received as a result of the shattering and separation, as a result of falling from that high place.

Rabash writes: “Repentance refers to Adam HaRishon prior to the sin being adhered, but became removed because of the sin. Hence, each and every one, because he is a part of the soul of Adam HaRishon, must approach spirituality once more,” that is, return to its root, to the state where he was before the sin.

This is an extremely exalted state where we are inside the Creator and adhered to Him like an embryo inside the mother. It is impossible to even imagine such an exalted state, but we must come to it and we certainly will. That is why we are so happy to be in a group that is learning and yearning to implement this return, and we are firmly confident that we will reach it soon.

First of all, we need to study what thoughts and feelings dwell in us today, and then we will learn how to correct our heart and mind in order to come closer to the state we were in before sinning, before falling and distancing from the Creator. How did it happen that we fell from spirituality as if there was a miscarriage and the mother lost the child? The same thing happened to us when we fell and were distanced from the Creator. But today, we have a happy opportunity to return back to Him!

Will Judgment Day Purify Everything?

626Comment: Yom Kippur is the day of atonement, the day of judgment, the day of forgiveness. It has many names. It is the most important day and even secular Jews in Israel celebrate it. On this day, highways are empty and children ride their bikes peacefully. Everything stops.

People scan the year that they have lived, they check, and think it over. They even say that there is such a rule from above that you have to check it because you are being sealed for the next year.

My Response: Yes. Humble yourself and check all your actions over the past year.

Question: What does it mean to check all your deeds over the past year?

Answer: How good and kind you were to others. Because if you have any problems with others, then no judgment will redeem you. So it is said! You have to ask everyone for forgiveness and check all your actions toward connection with others.

Question: One should perceive it directly like this?

Answer: Yes, directly! That’s how it is written and that’s how I take it.

Comment: Meaning, if I hated someone, or I snapped at someone, I did some nasty things to someone…

My Response: I’m letting go.

Question: “I’m letting go” in the sense that I am in some way apologizing to them?

Answer: There are some people to whom I cannot turn and ask for forgiveness. I do it within myself. Ostensibly, I apologize to them, although I know that I cannot approach them, I cannot approach them in any way, but I apologize.

Question: Is this to say, it is required from above?

Answer: Not just from above. This is a very serious psychological action that helps a person evaluate his attitude to the world, to life, and to people.

Question: Does it give some kind of purification to a person?

Answer: Of course. I know that I have to apologize now and come out of this state in such a way that everyone will forgive me.

Question: And if I really don’t want to forgive? If I know he’s a scoundrel?

Answer: It doesn’t matter.

Question: So even to the one who offended me, I apologize to him as well?

Answer: Yes, even if he is such a scoundrel as you say, you still need to apologize as if you are to blame for all this. And how do you know? Maybe it is so.

Comment: You’re talking in such a way now, as if it’s a world holiday. You don’t add the word “Jews” or “Israel” here, as if it applies to every person.

My Response: In general, everyone should have it. This is indicated for the Jewish people, but I believe that everyone should have a day of atonement.

Not necessarily at the same time. On different days or different times of the year, but every nation and every person should experience it as if he really is before the court and is obliged to ask for forgiveness from everyone!

Question: On this day I am judged for my character?

Answer: Yes!

Question: What should I be like?

Answer: I have to be like the Creator.

I should strive to not do evil to anyone and not to hold evil against anyone and I must be ready to do good at any time of day or night. The most important thing is to come to love the Creator through love for people.

Question: So one way or another, the end point is love for the Creator? From the love of creatures to the love of the Creator? Is this the most important formula?

Answer: Yes.

Question: But if a person does not feel the Creator and does not believe in Him?

Answer: It doesn’t matter at all. All people, from the age of maturity onward, who are considered adults (women at 12 years old and men at 13 years old), are obliged in some way to sanctify themselves. Sanctify is from the word “light” and the word “holiness.”

Comment: There are judgment day prayers. What is more effective: a prayer that is written or a prayer that is in the heart when a person sits, thinks, and prays?

My Response: Undoubtedly, the one that is in the heart. What the sages wrote, they wrote. But the way I think and what I would write, as it is said, “Write on your heart,” is much stronger.

Question: What would you wish now, on this day of judgment, toward this complicated world of ours?

Answer: I would wish the world peace.

Starting with a person in himself, with friends, with relatives, and ending with absolutely everyone, the most remote up to the very last person in the world, so that the whole globe is covered with forgiveness and that we would never let our egoism rule over us again. Then everything will be fine!

Question: So I have to come to the conclusion that egoism dominates us?

Answer: Yes, of course. The entire Yom Kippur consists in the trial of egoism.

Question: So I identify the enemy on this day?

Answer: Undoubtedly.

Question: It’s not the neighbor, it’s me. And then my request is to get out?

Answer: Free me from this evil inclination in me.

Question: And this is called the best spent Yom Kippur?

Answer: Yes. When I sit, think about it all, and decide that I don’t want to use it anymore, and I ask the Creator to free me from it.

Yom Kippur: A Request for Correction

236.02In the process of spiritual development, there is a special state called Yom Kippur (from the word “kapara” – “redemption”), which means the correction of all sins for which a person repents and asks to be corrected.

After all, it is clear that we ourselves cannot correct anything, and the sins we have committed are not ours at all because it is the Creator who created the evil inclination that rules over us and forces us to sin.

We are not guilty that we are immersed in egoism, which every time pushes us to think only about ourselves and not about others or about the Creator. Therefore, both sins and their correction are not our fault and not our merit because the Creator does everything. He has prepared all the sins and all the corrections against them for us, and we are between one and the other, like in a vice.

Our work is to relate everything to the Creator, both the sins and the corrections. We can only connect sin with correction when we can understand and feel that both of them come from the Creator and not from us. The Creator is above sins and above corrections. This is a special higher power above everything.

That is why Yom Kippur is a day of special joy that allows us to rise even higher above creation, to connect with the higher power, and to reach its level. All the sins and all the egoism that have been created by the Creator and the corrections that are achieved thanks to Him are necessary for us to understand the step that is above the evil and good inclinations, that is, to understand the Creator, who cannot be attained in any other way.

The Creator is separated from all creation, and it is possible to attain this essence only in this way, through the experience of our separation to the fullest extent. When we unite with each other, we unite with the Creator.

We rise above transgressions, above punishment and reward, and make these corrections so that only with their help will we reach the Creator who is detached from the whole creation. The Creator has prepared all these states for us so that we can attain Him: one, unique, and unified.

Yom Kippur is the main symbol of the process of attaining the upper force that is detached from the whole creation.

Without unification, without thoughts about the entire world Kli, and without thoughts about mutual help and about all of humanity it is impossible to achieve even the smallest spiritual revelation. All nations are destined to rise above their individual egoism and return to the system of Adam HaRishon, to become like one person, like one desire.

Yom Kippur is a spiritual state in which a person reveals that his transgression is that he thought he himself was transgressing and did not see that everything comes from the Creator. Meaning, he did not recognize that “There is none else besides Him.”

He thought he was doing everything by himself and he evaluated his thoughts and desires in his egoism. But now a person wants to correct his mistakes, all these impure discernments that are not related to the one, unique, and unified upper force. And this is what he prays and asks the Creator for.

This is the essence of the judgment day (translated literally, but usually it is called the Day of Atonement)—the day on which a person wants to atone and correct all the states and clarifications that he could not attribute to the upper force. After all, our whole job is to attribute everything that happens in the world to the upper force and to consider ourselves to be only a creation controlled by it one hundred percent.

The ascent of 125 spiritual steps is an increasing identification of oneself with the upper force until complete unification with it. When we completely correct the Kelim, which was intentionally broken by the Creator, and raise it to His level, then we will be ready to begin the true path to understand and unify with the Creator.

But these are secrets of the end of correction. When we achieve this together—all the creations who are now in this world and those who are not in it—then we will go further and find out what the Creator has prepared for us after the final correction.

In Yom Kippur we reveal that not only good, but also evil comes from the Creator and they have equal value. A person should bless for evil as well as for good because due to both of these forces he attains unification with the Creator.

This unification with the higher power is our common single goal, and therefore any past state must be perceived as an invitation for unification. It doesn’t matter what I feel or what happens in my mind, my heart, my body, or in my relationships, by this I am shown where I can add and strengthen the unification with the upper force.

The meaning of fasting on Yom Kippur is that we act only by the power of faith without using the power of reception.

“A Spiritual Temporary Residence”

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom My Facebook Page Michael Laitman 10/7/22

Today is the eve of Sukkot (Hebrew: Huts), a Jewish festival where the custom is to build huts and dwell in them for seven days. The traditional explanation to this custom is that it is to remind us that our ancestors were wanderers in the Sinai desert and lived in huts, without a permanent residence. But in Jewish spirituality, namely the wisdom of Kabbalah, there is an additional, and very different explanation to this custom, which has to do with improving our connections, and nothing at all to do with where we eat or sleep.

The wisdom of Kabbalah is a method for bringing people closer, for uniting them. Its goal is to bring people to the same level of connection that existed among the people of Israel at the inception of their nationhood, when they were connected as one man with one heart.

All of the Jewish festivals have two levels of explanation. The superficial level usually pertains to an event in the chronicles of the Jewish people. The deeper level pertains to discernments concerning the level of unity or division among Jews, and their mission to be a model of unity, a light to the nations.

Jewish festivals mark particular stages in the process of establishing permanent unity and achieving the final correction in a process called Tikkun Olam (correction of the world). In this process, the world transits from division and hatred into unity and love.

Normally, we live in a permanent residence. This represents a well-established level of connection between us. At such a level, people feel connected to a certain extent, they know what points to touch and what points to avoid, and feel complacent in the level of bonding and care among them. However, their complacency prevents them from touching on points of division that can lift them to higher levels of connection if they rise above them.

At that point, we must relinquish the comfort of our permanent residence and venture into a temporary one, where matters are not so clear and the bonding not yet solidified. However, if we want to become a model nation, we must show the world how to rise above adversities, and division is precisely the adversity to overcome.

Once we are in a temporary residence, and the connection between us is shaky, we must raise unity above our heads, meaning make it the most important, superior value. If we do this together, unity becomes our shield, our Sechah (canopy), which covers and protects us from the elements, namely from division.

The unity that is revealed under the canopy is called Ushpizin (guests), whom we welcome into our hut. Once we have completed seven manifestations of division and unity that we have built above it, and have hosted seven “guests,” it is considered that we have established and solidified a new degree of unity.

In such a state, it is considered that we return to our permanent residence with the new level of unity we have acquired. This marks the end of the festival of Sukkot, when we return to our homes. May we always strive to foster deeper and deeper connections among all Jews, above all differences, so we may be a model nation that brings peace to the world.

Instructions for Constructing a Common Soul

938.05In our connection with our friends, we are looking for and want to grasp the Creator like radar captures the right wave. Therefore, we need to create such a connection that will have the qualities of the Creator, that is, mutual bestowal between us. If we have all achieved mutual bestowal, then we are definitely aimed at the Creator.

Everyone has seen how a radar spins in search of the desired wave; that is how we need to set up our connection. We ourselves do not know how to do this, but we ask the Creator to change us so that all of us together turn out to be a dish, an antenna, directed at the Creator according to the equivalence of our qualities. In accordance with this, everyone changes himself and adjusts to his friends so that everyone together matches the Creator.

Through such work, we unite into one soul and begin to receive instructions from the Creator inside our locator inside the ten about how we can change ourselves in order to catch the ray of light sent by Him even better and more correctly. And this ray, through its impact, begins to change us, turn us, and correct us so as to connect us with the Creator.

And at all the next degrees where we build a connection with the Creator, we tune in to Him more precisely and connect with Him at higher and higher frequencies with greater force.

For a perfect prayer from the ten, it is necessary to understand what each of the friends wants. And therefore, when reading Rabash’s articles about the group, we try to connect so that each passage connects us with the Creator.

In this way, we are getting closer and closer by building all kinds of forms of connection until we begin to feel the source influencing us and our responses to this influence, this means being connected to the Creator through direct light and reforming light, and building a spiritual Kli out of ourselves.

Then we reveal the Reshimot, spiritual actions, the entry and exit of light, the rise of the screen from degree to degree within the connection between us. We will study all the phenomena in the spiritual Partzuf described in Kabbalistic books on ourselves, as taught by Baal HaSulam, Ari, and other Kabbalists.

Yom Kippur—Recognition of Egoism

229Question: During Rosh HaShanah, a person decides to start a new life, and despite the fact that he needs to rise above his nature, he nevertheless wants to check all his qualities within ten days before Yom Kippur.

Comparing them with the qualities of the Creator, he sees that he cannot be like the Creator in any of them, and on Yom Kippur decides to make a restriction on them, which in our world are represented by five restrictions.

After that, five days later, which symbolize the five Sefirot, the Sukkot holiday begins. What is the essence of these holidays?

Answer: The New Year (Rosh HaShanah) is preceded by a whole series of days when people ask for forgiveness. They sort of evaluate their actions, what good and bad they have done, and in general they understand that they have not done anything particularly good.

This is how a person checks his actions and comes to the conclusion that he is obliged to obey the upper will of the Creator because “there is none else besides Him.” He accepts the upper will as the only force ruling in the world. From this state, he begins to evaluate himself. He really has a very serious analysis of his actions and deeds, which continues until Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur is the inner state of a person when he realizes that only one big egoism is acting within him and he must rise above himself. After all, the main commandment of the Torah is “love your neighbor as yourself,” and he is absolutely far from this and even the opposite of this. Therefore, he asks for forgiveness.

This is the principle of Yom Kippur, when he is ready to stop using his egoistic desires. There are only five of them in a person. Therefore, they are represented by five restrictions in our world: a prohibition on eating, drinking, and so on.

The Calendar and Spiritual Yom Kippur

294.2Question: What does Yom Kippur mean?

Answer: Yom Kippur – “Ki Purim,” as the day (Yom)  of Purim. “Kippur” is “Redemption,” “Purim” from the word “Pur,” which means fate.

Therefore, Yom Kippur shows all our transgressions, which we must gradually correct. From Yom Kippur to Hanukkah, we correct our bestowing desires to be only in bestowal, and from Hanukkah to Purim, we also correct the qualities of reception so that they are directed to bestowal. And in this way, we come to the Purim holiday.

There are certain prohibitions on Yom Kippur; people do not drink, do not wear leather clothes, and so on. This means that we find egoistic inclusions in all our desires, and therefore we cannot use them.

The five types of prohibitions correspond to five types of restriction because our egoistic desire consists of five levels. Each level corresponds to food, drink, clothing, and so on.

Question: Why can’t we wear leather clothes on this day?

Answer: Clothes (“Levush“) means that you have a Kli (Vessel), a certain correction, and then you can dress in such clothing. But in fact, you discover that all your desires are egoistic, and therefore you cannot clothe in them. The prohibition is in order not to use uncorrected desires.

A Kabbalist in his spiritual advancement fulfills these prohibitions, meaning, restrictions to his desires, checks himself, and acts accordingly.

Question: Do we also need to observe this in our world?

Answer: Well, in our world this exists as customs. Otherwise, they would not be passed from generation to generation for the people, and would exist only among Kabbalists who understand their essence and act in this way. Moreover, Kabbalists do this not on the calendar day of Yom Kippur, but every time they are in such a state.

Question: What does a Kabbalist ask for on this day?

Answer: He asks the Creator to help him to go beyond his egoism. He has no other requests.

There can be only two types of appeals to the Creator. The first is with gratitude for having received such a special work, the second is with a request for strength to rise even higher to the quality of bestowal.

Rosh HaShanah—Adam’s Birthday

744All the nations of the world celebrate the New Year as an ordinary corporeal holiday, and only the Jews have a special celebration as we celebrate the creation of Adam. This is a very significant date.

Five days before the New Year (Rosh HaShanah), the creation of the world took place, and on New Year’s Day, at the fifth hour of Friday, Adam was created.

All the red dates of the Jewish calendar are dedicated not to the corporeal holidays, but to various spiritual actions, including the creation of the world and the creation of Adam. They gave our people a general and purposeful movement forward.

Adam is a soul, i.e., a structure of force, a network of forces, which is supposedly located somewhere in space and is an analogy of the Creator.

But it was created from above, under the influence of the upper force, which is kindness, love, and bestowal. Therefore, the structure itself was in the same state of bestowal, love, and mercy toward itself, and was an internal, self-sufficient “cocoon” that did not need to develop, it existed by itself.

In order to force this structure to develop, it was necessary to shake it somehow, to introduce an element of interference into it, a sharp external influence. This was done with the help of an additional system called Hava or Eve. She disturbed Adam’s inner balance, and as a result, this structure exploded from the inside.

For example, when an imbalance occurs in an atomic bomb due to excessive convergence of the two halves, the critical mass increases and self-decay begins, which leads to a nuclear explosion.

The same thing happened here. It turns out that we basically celebrate the fall. It would seem that we should sit in mourning, fast, cry, and “sprinkle ashes on our heads.”

No, we celebrate it, because thanks to the shattering we can assemble ourselves from the fragments of Adam and Eve and bring ourselves to the state similar to the upper force that created them and become equal to it in perfection and eternity.

In this way, we correct what the Creator deliberately broke for us, just as parents disassemble a puzzle for a child so that he becomes smarter by assembling it. In all this action, we must see the preparation of the Creator who treats us with love and wishes that we reach His perfection, become equal to Him.

Therefore, we celebrate the opportunity given to us for correction as a holiday. This is the New Year.

Why Do We Need a Jewish New Year?

506.3Question: The Jewish New Year has come, the 5783rd Rosh HaShanah. At the time when it all started, there were no Jews. But it is called “Jewish” and Jews celebrate it.

The global question now is whether this the Jewish New Year or is it the World New Year? What would you call it?

Answer: All those who take upon themselves the system of correction, meaning are included in this chronology, which is called Hebrew from the word “Ivri” – to cross the border between our egoistic world and the upper, altruistic one. So, those who want to cross this border, even if they have not yet moved from egoism to altruism, immediately the count goes to 5,783.

And then they call themselves “Ivri,” “Jew” from the word “Yihud” – “union,” because the transition takes place in connection. In this way they celebrate this date, the date of the descent into their hearts and minds of understanding of how we can move from our world, the egoistic state, to the upper world, the altruistic state.

Comment: Jews in Israel and around the world celebrate the New Year, this is the Jewish New Year. And you say, it is really those who cross or want to cross this border who celebrate it.

My Response: What is the news for everyone celebrating today that this is considered the new year? I understand that there can be many dates. But, in general, the main thing is not the date, but the meaning, the essence. And the point is that a person should change from an egoist to an altruist.

If a person wants to change, if he goes to this change, then the new year period comes for him.

Question: And all the attributes of the new year—apple, honey, sweetening life by dipping an apple in honey—does this have some deep spiritual meaning?

Answer: The spiritual meaning lies only in the human spirit. There are no spiritual roots in apples and honey, just like there isn’t in the head of a fish.

Comment: And they say that you need to start from the head, not from the tail.

My Response: Because this is the new year , the head of the year. That’s why it starts like this. But in principle, if you take not a fish, but a bull’s head? It could be even better. 🙂 The year will be even more successful. 🙂

Question: What is the spiritual meaning of the phrase “start from the head”?

Answer: You need to start from the head. Meaning, for what you want to live for this year, what it should give you, what you should rise up to, what you should demand from yourself, it’s all in the head.

Question: And what to rise to? What to demand from yourself?

Answer: Only getting closer to the Creator. Nothing more is needed. This is the only solid setting for us. And that is why we are called “Israel” – “Yashar Kel,” “straight to the Creator.”

Question: So, in principle, the new year is a constant thought and movement exclusively to the Creator?

Answer: It is not just constant thoughts and movements only in the new year. You’re the one making the groundwork for the whole of next year.

Question: So you do this kind of backing for the whole year? And if you put everything well and correctly, will the year roll? Will it go well?

Answer: No! It doesn’t mean anything yet. It would have been nice to pay off in the new year for the whole year! 🙂

Question: So it won’t work like this? Do you need to work constantly?

Answer: Yes, it won’t slip through.

Question: Then it turns out that every day can be a new year because every day you renew thoughts about the Creator and about the connection?

Answer: This is also true. So, this date is purely symbolic. There is nothing in this state of the Earth around the Sun and us on Earth, in general, there is nothing.

Question: What are your wishes to all people this New Year? You see how things are developing in the world. What a year we’ve had!

Answer: And it is still unknown what the new one will be like. We are facing really scary questions.

I think we should just wish humanity to be wiser. To understand what force really guides us, why such negative forces and threats arise in our world, and how we can even use them to turn ourselves in the right direction, to the right goal, to achieve unity, and in this unity discover the eternal great meaning.
