There are people who by their very nature crave connection with the upper. And then they tell us and explain who we are in connection with, who controls us, and who we really are. There were many such people throughout history. Among them were those who left us the means to establish a connection with the upper force. We remember, honor, and study these people.
A huge contribution to this was made by a man whose name was the Ari, Isaac Luria Ashkenazi. He lived in the 16th century. Before him, there were many generations of Kabbalists from Adam HaRishon to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Behind each of these names is an entire Kabbalistic school for spiritual development of a person.
And yet, the Ari is of great importance in the development of Kabbalah. Today is the memorial day of his departure, and if we remember him and study his works, we get the opportunity to connect with this special soul, the likes of which no longer exist in all of humanity.
This soul plays a very special role in the system of Adam HaRishon and has made such a huge contribution to its correction that no one else was able to reach.
If we want to connect with the Ari, we must connect with the principles of the science of Kabbalah he taught to his students, meaning we must fulfill in full the rule of loving one’s neighbor as oneself.
Revelations of the Ari for humanity can be compared in importance to Moses receiving the Torah. We are not really aware of it and do not really know how to use the Torah. The Ari took a step forward, explained to us what the inner essence of the Torah is, why it is necessary to keep it, and how through our connection, all the parts of creation will be connected.
The creation was deliberately shattered so that we could collect it through our own efforts and lead it to correction, and thus attain the inner force that unites everything—the Creator.
From the Torah itself, we were unable to understand all this. But generation after generation has sunk lower and lower after the ruin of the First and Second Temples and as the final stage of the 2,000 years of exile neared in the 16th century, the time had come to reveal to humanity the method of correction. And then the soul of the Ari appeared to explain to us how the upper system affects us and what we should do in accordance with it.
The Ari gave us a clear, generalized, systematic explanation of where we are, which force controls us from above, how we should act from below in accordance with this, and what our goal is.

The shattering provides an opportunity for correction. If there were no shattering, there would be nothing to correct. And without correction, we have no chance to feel creation, which is perceived only as the advantage of light over darkness.
Therefore, if there were no difference between the desire to receive and the desire to bestow, between light and darkness in our sensations, we would not understand creation and would not feel where we are.
And if there were no sensations, we would not have developed intelligence, the ability to think, to be aware. We would be left with small, primitive, limited desires. In fact, the bounty of human feelings and understanding comes precisely from the contradiction inherent in our root: two opposite foundations, the power of bestowal coming from the nature of the Creator and the power of reception as the mirror-opposite of the Creator.
When these two forces act in us one against the other, we obtain between the two of them real perception, vision, and sensation. It is impossible to perceive creation only in one quality or in another, but only on the contrast of two opposites, which is 620 times greater attainment of the power and richness of creation.
Therefore, the shattering that occurred at the beginning of creation and the sin of the tree of knowledge were bound to happen. Without them, there would be no mixing of holiness and impurity (Klipa), and there would be no contrast between them. And it is in the contrast of these two poles that we build ourselves.
A person is not a considered to be a body made of flesh and blood, that is not our initial state; a person is the wisdom accumulated in the process of clarifying between good and evil, light and darkness, between the Klipa and holiness. From the sparks extracted from there, we collect our desires and correct fillings for a vessel called “the soul.” Through those discernments this vessel grows and expands, it becomes filled with the attainment and sensation of the Creator and merges with Him.
Therefore, we need to realize that nothing bad happens in creation but only clarifications of what the Creator created. The Creator wants to teach us, but His instruction is not like what we are used to in school; it leads to the collision of opposite qualities in us so that from a state of duality, searching, and contradiction, we attain the entire creation in depth and in width, and thereby build ourselves.
All this development comes from ascents and descents, the shattering, and the collision of our egoism with the desire to bestow. As we try to combine the fragments of broken desires, we study the depth of creation and its nature, and attain the Creator.

The work in ascents and descents is given to us from above, from the Creator, who pushes us to this work. Sometimes He reveals a new will to receive to us that was hidden inside and forces us to fall, then He helps us rise and explore our egoism in the upper light, in the will for bestowal.
Ascents and descents alternately reveal increasing egoistic desires and an increasing desire for bestowal so we get to know ourselves and the whole creation. We study our nature compared to the nature of the Creator and get an opportunity to advance toward Him by combining one with the other.
All this comes as a result of ascents and descents. Therefore, a lot of preparation is needed. Patience is needed in order to go through many thousands of ascents and descents until the very end of correction where the highest ascent occurs, preceded by the lowest descent.
The further we advance along the spiritual path toward correction, the deeper the descents and higher the ascents become. The Creator created one against the other for us, and we move forward studying His work as the advantage of light from darkness.
It always happens only in such a contrasting form: the greater the darkness, then the more light is revealed. The time axis that leads us to the end of correction takes us along a sinusoid (sine wave)—from ever greater descents to ever greater ascents where plus and minus always correspond to each other in absolute magnitude.
Therefore, the whole work is comprised of accepting the descents, trying to annul oneself, to bend down, as it is said about King David: “O Lord…You hid Your countenance and I became frightened.” And in fact, it is unpleasant when each time weakness, indifference, and disappointment overcome us in a new way. That is, new forms of lack of desire for spirituality are revealed. But then an ascent comes, gives us more strength, clarifies the past descent, and allows us to justify it.
Therefore, it is necessary to learn one thing from the other. This study does not end until the very end of correction as the advantage of light out of darkness. The more darkness manifests itself in all its forms, the more light and elevation unfolds after it. And thus we get to know the light, the ascent, the Creator, the forms of nearing Him precisely in contrast with the forms of distance and darkness that were in the descent.
It is said about Rabbi Shimon that he felt like just Shimon, a simple merchant in the market, an ordinary person. And then he realized that this descent was so significant that apparently after it, there would be a special, unusually high ascent.
This is how we should try to hold ourselves through the ascents and descents so that these two forms will support each other, because one is impossible without the other.

Maimomides (Rambam) writes that our world is below the axis of time and the spiritual world is above time. Therefore, as we move closer to spirituality, we suddenly begin to feel that one second is a very long time. We can fit many events into the period from the beginning of one second to its end.
In modern technology, devices work at high frequencies and are able to process millions of impulses per second, which they could not do before. The spiritual world is way above modern technology and works at an infinite frequency. Therefore, there are no short moments in spirituality, and every moment there is infinite.
