Seek the Upper

232.04All of a person’s work at the beginning of the spiritual path lies in seeking the upper. The entire universe is structured such that there is only the upper and the lower, and nothing else. The vast world that seems to surround us, both the upper worlds and this world, is in fact nothing but our own inner desires, which only appear as external to us.

In reality only the upper and the lower exist, which  are a sequence of spiritual degrees that extend from above downward. These degrees or worlds do not exist independently; they are within us. As we develop, ever greater parts of our desire are revealed to us, which are filled with the perception of existence, and this is what we call our next degree.

That is, the entire spiritual ladder is inside a person who ascends it and thus increasingly feels, understands, and chooses.

So who are these two, the upper and the lower, the only ones that exist in all of reality? The upper is me in my next state to come. And the lower is me in my current state.

The upper, my future state, is where I am more similar to the Creator. All my states, from now onward until absolute perfection, are comprised of increasing similarity to the Creator, to the levels of a human being that resemble the higher.

Everything is always structured in ten Sefirot, a complete portion, a full transformation of my desires from one “complete” state to another (from Yechida to Yechida). This is the minimal full change within me called a degree.

The degree of the upper relative to the lower is like the Creator relative to creation. When I rise to that upper degree, meaning I become similar in qualities to the Creator, I become like Him, and that upper degree that is revealed to me at that moment is the Creator (Boreh), which means “come and see.” For I have risen there and now “see,” that is, I receive the light of Hochma into my spiritual vessels.

The Encyclopedia of Shame

259.02“One who eats that which is not his is afraid to look at his face.” This means that anyone who feeds on the labor of others is afraid (ashamed) to look at his own form, for his form is inhuman (Baal HaSulam, “The Love of God and the Love of Man”).

Within us lies the attribute of shame; it is profound and piercing. We are desperately afraid to expose it because shame nullifies our self, turns us into nothing.

If I experience shame rising to its full height, I annul myself as a result. This stems from the highest root: from my opposition to the Creator, from the desire to receive that stands in contrast to the light.
When feeling how opposite it is to the light in qualities and height, the desire experiences this gap as shame.

Then it is ready to annul itself, to cease to exist, just to no longer feel this chasm. This is what compels it to perform a restriction, i.e., to nullify itself. To get rid of the shame, I am willing to return to non-existence, to the nothingness from which I came.

Sometimes a tiny speck of this spiritual feeling awakens within us.

So why is shame necessary? It helps us attain adhesion, complete resemblance to the Creator. Shame arises from the oppositeness revealed between us and Him and helps bridge that gap.

This means that if I want to progress, I must constantly intensify the feeling of shame, that is, the gap between me and the Creator, so that I can move forward without error.

Let’s say that today I am ashamed as if I stole one dollar from Him. Tomorrow, it will be two dollars, the day after, three. By isolating and emphasizing my opposition, I correct it and advance.

Thus, shame is the sharpest sensation that literally “short-circuits” me to the Creator. If I truly correct the shame through bestowal and constantly rise above it, I reach adhesion. That is why our final state is defined precisely as adhesion.

Shame is a separate creation. Two desires alone—receiving and bestowing—are not enough because then direct fulfillment would suffice: one gives, the other receives, no problem.

But the Creator desires that the created being resemble Him. Therefore, He embedded within it this unique feeling called shame, which constantly prods and agitates us.

When you throw a bone to a dog, it happily gnaws at it with no shame. But a human being, unless reduced to a bestial state, is constantly driven by shame.

What makes you live in that particular house, wear those clothes, go to work, start a family, enjoy “cultured entertainment,” and so on? Shame. Otherwise, what will people say?

There is shame that hinders my advancement: “What will others think?”

And there is another kind, shame before the Creator.

If I strengthen it, the embarrassment before others fades into the background: “Let them talk, let them think what they want.”

I am ready to feel childish awkwardness before others if only it helps me feel true shame before the Creator and aim in the right direction.

Shame is the point of my I, its indicator.

In relationships with others, my ego can be harmed. But in relation to the Creator, it is about the deep, primordial opposition of attributes.

Shame is created separately. It does not exist in the inanimate, vegetative, or animate levels. It belongs solely to the human species and differentiates within it according to levels of desire.

Shame is the reason for the first restriction, the cause of all development. In the world of infinity, Malchut was filled with light and in adhesion with the Creator. But it lacked just one thing—to rid itself of the opposition to Him.

That is the point of shame.

You would think, what does it matter? Before you is a table filled with royal delicacies, and the Host gives you His entire palace, all His treasures: “All that I have is yours. What more do you need? Don’t you want to be a guest in My house? Fine, I am no longer the host.”

Yet, the guest remains unsatisfied: “It was not I who prepared all this, it was You. I came to everything ready-made.”

“So you want to become like Me—existence from existence itself?”

Here we touch upon a very subtle point, so lofty that it is unclear where it leads, somewhere beyond the tenth millennium, after the final correction.

A Date at the 49th Gate

204If a person does not overcome a small obstacle on the path, a greater disturbance will not come to him. That small disturbance will keep confusing and spinning him around until he manages to rise above it.

Being under the 49 gates of impurity does not mean being buried beneath them; rather, it means passing through 48 gates of holiness! I overcome each of the impure gates, and in doing so reach the next, even higher gate, or more accurately, the lower ones, because these are gates of impurity. But I must conquer the previous ones first. If I do not know how to do first-grade exercises, I will not be admitted to second grade.

The work in Egypt is very hard: working with the material, with bricks, under resistance and opposition from Pharaoh. It is not idle inaction waiting for time to do the job. Time will do nothing. “You shall not place a stumbling block before a blind person.” That is why we must work and not despair when we receive a burdening of the heart. Ideally, we should shorten such periods as much as possible.

The Egyptian exile was meant to last 400 years, but the children of Israel shortened it to 210. Though that incomplete work came back to them later, it returned in another form. Yet, we are no longer in that phase of preparation for correction. So for us, the periods called the Egyptian exile, the receiving of the Torah, and the 40 years of wandering in the desert can all be very short. We can pass through them rapidly, in accelerated time.

When a person reaches the final, 49th gate of impurity, no one can save him from there but the Creator Himself: “He alone, and not His angel or messenger.” Step by step, a person draws closer, overcomes all the forces of impurity, until finally he makes contact with the upper force.

In essence, the Klipa prepares the entire path for us, laying out the trail through which we can ascend to the Creator.

Bestowal for the Sake of Bestowal: A Cleansing State

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If the matter of creation is the receiving desire, what does it mean to bestow in order to bestow? Where is the work with desire?

Answer: The truth of the matter is that the receiving desire itself works for the sake of bestowal. It supports a fellow human being, helps him, and performs various actions in relation to him.

In general, to understand bestowal for the sake of bestowal, it is necessary to understand what reception for the sake of bestowal is. It means that I work with my receiving desires so as to use them to raise a fellow human being and perform the actions of bestowal upon him, similar to how Bina works in its AHP.

I include the receiving desires of the other into my own and fill him with everything he requires. And what he requires is infinity. Then with my help his desires reach an infinite magnitude, while the Lights coming to him through me grow to the infinite size of NRNHY. This is how I work receiving in order to bestow: I make sure to give the other everything necessary, utilizing all of my abilities for this purpose and totally ignoring my own benefit.

However, for this I need the upper force that is not in my nature. My inborn nature lets me perform only actions that promise me personal benefit, whereas the actions of bestowal are totally selfless and do not benefit my receiving desires in any way. This is why I can’t perform them unless I receive the strength from the upper dimension, that of bestowal.

Hence, I incorporate the needs of the other into my desires and then through my desires I fulfill him. In general, we are talking about the desires that relate to our interconnection since the spiritual work is performed at the level of the unity of souls where we fill ourselves with the upper lights.

There is another option: not to engage my receiving desires, but only to transfer all the good from myself to the other, to participate in his fulfillment, but not with my own desires. This is pure bestowal. As a rule, these actions precede mutual bestowal. They correct our unification. Thanks to them we annul our egoism in order to rise above it to unity. And unity itself is activated by the direct use of our receiving desires.

In this way, bestowal for the sake of bestowal is an intermediate, small, weak, “poor” state. But we have no choice: We need to undergo it since we thereby clean our desires and rise above our egoistic qualities. Without it, it is impossible to start working with them. First of all, we have to “cleanse them,” meaning to fill them with the Light of Hassadim (Mercy).
