Previously we were connected and got along with each other quite well. Everything was just great!

All of a sudden, we broke apart and detached from one another. Currently, we are striving to reconnect. One additional desire is being revealed to us now. It prevents us from reconnecting. Actually, this desire is the “evil inclination.” It’s a consequence of the Light that enters the vessel.

This desire was not created as “something out of nothing,” but rather it’s as a result of the shattering; it was initiated by the Upper Light’s contact with the desire to receive. Originally, it was very small, clean, and minor. It was the fourth stage that belonged to the world of Infinity. However, when the Light entered the fourth stage, it created an additional fragment that was not covered by a screen (Masach). There was far more delight in the Light than the fourth stage had ever anticipated to receive for the sake of bestowal. This situation caused the shattering and created the “work load” with which we now cope.

Later, this process reached our world and this additional fraction of the desire was concealed. This explains why spirituality is concealed from us. So now we work hard and strive to attain things that are above us; we started to search for the additional desire that was previously created in us.

We need not work with an authentic desire that is a part of Infinity because it was made directly by the Creator. We only have to work on the additional portion of the desire. For that, we have to reveal it. The “additional desire” is in fact the “taste,” the aspiration, the need, the “hunger,” the “appetite” that we feel towards the Light.

How can we search for it? It’s possible only in the group, only if one “glues” back together all the broken particles and acknowledges the presence of the evil inclination, meaning the additional desire that was created as a result of the shattering of the vessels. The shattering occurred exactly when the delights of which the Light is comprised entered the initial desire that was a part of Infinity, thus shaping a desire that manifests itself as the “evil inclination.”

So, it means that the evil inclination is in fact the vessel that we have. All “tastes” come out of it. That’s why it is said that “the one who doesn’t know the taste of sin (violation) won’t learn the taste of commandments.” There is a moment at which one has to get a sensation of what “wickedness” is and “enjoy” it.

This pertains to our relationships with people around us rather than to our internal sensations. If one feels lazy or dispirited, if one stays on the couch all day and doesn’t answer telephone calls, it has nothing to do with the “evil inclination.” The evil inclination didn’t exist previously; it emerged only now because of the negative relationships between the parts of the desire to receive, which are eager to reconnect. Even though the “infrastructure” of the evil inclination covers inanimate, vegetative, and animate levels, we still reveal it at the speaking level in the shape of fragmented, detached parts of the general soul of Adam HaRishon.

Previously, Adam was “an angel” and stayed in Galgalta ve Eynaim. Now, we can detect him due to the evil inclination. It means that we really need the evil inclination! Without it, we won’t be able to move ahead!

That’s why Baal HaSulam writes that we should be happy when our negativity shows up, since it’s a part of our soul. We have to work on the evil inclination and use it to connect, unite, and merge with each other so that we can reveal the property of bestowal within it. It has to be originated by each of us and by the Creator. The aspiration should address our joint, mutual love rather than our personal bestowal to the Creator or His bestowal to us.
