The Creator Does Not Change, We Change

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 34:8-34:11: And Moses hastened, bowed his head to the ground and prostrated himself, and said: “If I have now found favor in Your eyes, O Lord, let the Lord go now in our midst [even] if they are a stiff necked people, and You shall forgive our iniquity and our sin and thus secure us as Your possession.” And He said: “Behold! I will form a covenant; in the presence of all your people, I will make distinctions such as have not been created upon all the earth and among all the nations, and all the people in whose midst you are shall see the work of the Lord how awe inspiring it is that which I will perform with you. Keep carefully what I am commanding you today: Lo! I will drive out from before you the Amorites and the Canaanites, the Hittites and the Perizzites, the Hivvites and the Jebusites.”

The Creator is a law, an absolute, ideal attribute that doesn’t change and is revealed to a person on every level in a totally different form. On the previous level He said: “I will not go up in your midst since you are a stiff necked people, lest I destroy you on the way.” And on the next level He said: “I am ready to lead you forward.” Everything depends on the level a person is on. The Creator doesn’t change; we are the ones who change.

So the words: “…before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been wrought in all the earth, nor in any nation,” mean that “I can already be among you in the attribute that you have acquired now, and perform certain actions on you.”

On the next level there is another descent into the ego, in order to reveal it and once again ask and activate the attribute of Moses inside us. It is the same on every level. Everything is accurately arranged since this is the only way the correction of each part can take place.

Appealing To The Light From The Darkness

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki-Tissa), 33:9-33:10: And it would be that when Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and He would speak with Moses.

When all the people would see the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and prostrate themselves, each one at the entrance of his tent.

As soon as the Creator approaches a person, one’s egoistic desire falls, meaning it bows before the property of bestowal. To have the Creator descend to us, we need a correct preparation. All depends on our incentives and actions that trigger the Creator to gradually descend to us. Then, our desires change.

Question: Do worries and anxieties that we go through in our work mean that we approach spiritual properties?

Answer: In general, those are bad qualities since in reality a correct state is a state of joy. Joy has to be present at the time of our descents. This is exactly how we can check ourselves: Whether you meet “nights” (darkness that gives you a chance to rise) with joyfulness. Can we appeal to the Light from the darkness?

We have to convert all our troubles into enjoyment. There is no alternative, since everything comes from the Creator with one purpose: to promote our advancement. In order to succeed, we need support from our surroundings, a group. If you have a group, there won’t be any problem. The main thing is not to dwell on these periods in life.

Entering The Land Of Israel

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa),” 33: 11: Then the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man would speak to his companion, and he would return to the camp, but his attendant, Joshua, the son of Nun, a lad, would not depart from the tent.

Those who have already obtained the property of bestowal speak with the Creator as equals because the quality of Bina in its highest point is similar to the Creator (the property of Keter). At that level, they merge with each other.

Joshua doesn’t possess the same powers as Moses to descend to the lowest desires (Malchut), to people, and interact with them there. Joshua remains in the point of merging and that’s why he is called “Moses’s servant.”

Later, Joshua ben Nun enters the land of Israel (“land” derives from the word “Eretz” meaning a “desire,” Malchut) since Malchut is ready to accept the quality of bestowal, whereas Moses is unable to enter the land of Israel because he remains in the pure property of Bina, thus being detached from Malchut. He can correct it, but he is unable to enter it. It will become possible only when the entire land of Israel will be conquered, meaning when Malchut will accept all properties of bestowal and love. Then, the property of Moses will reveal itself.

Everything Isn’t Easy

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Book, Panim Meirot uMasbirot,” Item 1: Who would dare extract it from the heart of the masses and scrutinize their ways, when their attainment is incomplete in both parts of the Torah called Peshat (literal) and Drush (interpretation)? In their view, the order of the four parts of the Torah (PARDESS) begins with the Peshat, then the Drush, then Remez (insinuated), and in the end the Sod (secret) is understood.

However, it is written in the Vilna Gaon prayer book that the attainment begins with the Sod…”

In fact, nothing is as simple as it seems. Attainment of Torah is divided into four parts and even they are arranged in an opposite order in comparison to what is accepted by the common folk. People think that they are learning Peshat while, in fact, the Torah is hidden from them and at best is conveyed in the form of Sod.

Vilna Gaon writes that we begin learning from Sod since in the beginning we don’t yet know anything. The Torah describes the arrangement of the worlds; their management by the Creator is intended to reveal the Creator to the creatures. This is, in essence, the goal of Torah, and to do this is possible only through correction of the creature to the condition of “and you shall love your friend as yourself.”

The Torah was given as a means for spiritual realization and its learning is practical, and in this way, the person goes along according to the order of the levels of Sod, Drush, Remez, Peshat.

In other words, first I grasp only a few small hints from the great secret, the darkness that envelops me and prevents me from understanding anything.

Then, the first thread connects me with the Light, with the Creator, with the higher management, and then I begin to understand and to feel a little.

That is how development passes through four stages with four levels of Aviut, and as long as we haven’t absorbed them, this is not called that we have acquired and understood the Torah, for the Torah clothes the Creator and through it the person corrects himself. In that, he turned around the corrected vessel by the Light. He needs to dedicate his entire life to this process. For this, he lives here in this life, and only in this way does he continue in the right direction, the way of the four levels of attaining the system which includes the vessel and the Light.

People think they are learning Peshat even though they remain in the “superficiality” of the text and prefer to understand it “as it is” and not go into it deeper. However, in fact, everything is the opposite for through this approach a person doesn’t understand anything of what is written and the truth is hidden from him.

Peshat symbolizes the removal of the “clothing” from the Torah, from the system of worlds, when I discover them completely. Their uncovering means the removal of the Masachim, the clothing, and the concealments.

For Man Shall Not See Me

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:18-33:20: He said: “Oh, let me behold Your Presence!” And He answered: “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim before you the name LORD, and the grace that I grant and the compassion that I show.  But,” He said, “you cannot see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.”

This is about our desires that cannot receive all the Light of Infinity. This is possible only at the end of correction when all these desires fully are adapted to the Light and all the separate souls connect to form a complete image of the Creator, face to face.

Although it sometimes is said that there was no prophet like Moses who spoke to the Creator face to face, it actually refers to an incomplete image of the attribute of love and bestowal that is revealed in the fully corrected mechanism of the general soul. It’s because our world has not risen to the level of the world of Infinity yet, and so it hasn’t been revealed in the history of the world yet. It’s only now that we begin our ascent, our correction.

So That The Creator Will Work On Us

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:21-33:23: And the Lord said: “Behold, there is a place with Me, and you shall stand on the rock. And it shall be that when My glory passes by, I will place you into the cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove My hand, and you will see My back but My face shall not be seen.”

“And you will see My back” means that the lower system can connect only with the posterior (Achoraim) of the upper system.

“The rock” are the discernments in a person’s ego that begin to acquire the right attributes and a person can hide in them.

The expression “and I will cover you with My hand” refers to a special concealment when a person can look at the upper through its posterior and connect to it, but in a state of concealment on the part of the Upper. This connection isn’t fulfilled as a result of bestowal from Above, but as a result of the right preparation on the part of a person. The Creator does everything else.

Thus, all our work is called “God’s work” (Avodat Hashem), while a person does the preparation. If a person is ready, the Creator fulfills his request.

Keep Your Attributes

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:12-33:13: Moses said to the Lord: “See, You say to me, ‘Lead this people forward,’ but You have not made known to me whom You will send with me. Further You have said: ‘I have singled you out by name, and you have, indeed, gained My favor.’ Now, if I have truly gained Your favor, pray let me know Your ways, that I may know You and continue in Your favor. Consider, too, that this nation is Your people.”

A person understands that he has to bring all his attributes to the Creator. It is by these attributes that he forms the image of the Creator inside him. The Creator has no image and He is revealed only inside a person. Therefore, a person is called Adam, someone who has attained a resemblance to the Creator.

So Moses guards them realizing that all his attributes are necessary for the attainment of this image. In previous states we hold on to all our egoistic attributes tightly, but when we come to the recognition that they are opposite from the Creator, we want to get rid of them. However, when we feel that they are essential in order to resemble the Creator, we begin to cherish them.

This is the reason that Moses asks so avidly for his people, which means for all the egoistic attributes, because otherwise he cannot attain a complete image.

The Creator bribes a person by promising to destroy half of his egoistic attributes because in order to completely resemble the Creator, it is enough to correct half of them.

But a person shouldn’t stop of course, because thanks to his most egoistic attributes, he can delight the Creator by becoming like Him.

Turning Poison Into Medicine

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:14-33:16: So He said, “My Presence will go, and I will give you rest.” And he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go [with us], do not take us up here. For how then will it be known that I have found favor in Your eyes, I and Your people? Is it not in that You will go with us? Then I and Your people will be distinguished from every [other] nation on the face of the earth.”

The Creator has to bring everyone to the level that they resemble Him. There are no concessions.

A person has to acknowledge the fact that he cannot get rid of any of his attributes because he has to correct them all. He begins to regard the most egoistic things he reveals about himself carefully, understanding that eventually they have to be inverted. Without annulling anything, he looks straight at his inner spiritual atlas realizing that the right image of the Creator cannot be without the absolute correction of all his desires to love and bestowal.

At the same time, a person hates these attributes and despises them! He would like to erase everything, to detach himself from his past, which constantly chases him. He blames himself, the Creator, and anyone he can for what he has to go through and for the many mistakes he has made in his life! The gradual recognition that they were all necessary for the attainment of the ultimate goal, but that what was so far only needs to be corrected, and these actions are absolutely right but simply need to be inverted—this is already a great revelation for a person.

He shouldn’t blame anyone for the past, because all his sins were determined intentionally. They are in him from the start and will be revealed in even more wild manners. But they are all necessary. He is ready to undergo anything just so that he wouldn’t lose them and will be able correct everything.

Question: What gives a person to strength to reach that?

Answer: The importance of the Creator and the fact that this is the only way to delight Him. Suppose I sit at a table that the Creator has set for me, which is full of different delicacies. Every dish before me is poison: it tastes terrible, bitter, and awful! I have to change inside me so that I will feel infinite pleasure by tasting and eating something that is disgusting and at the same time feel that it is sweet because I received it from Him. Everything depends on the intention that can turn the poison into medicine.

By Trial And Error

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:3: “…I will not go up in your midst since you are a stiff-necked people, lest I destroy you on the way.”

This means that there can be another destruction because a person has to have free will so that he will go through all the trials, through the clarification of his nature in relation to the Creator’s nature. Therefore nothing should interfere with this work. This means that a person’s desires, his yearnings, come first and the Creator’s help is second. Therefore he has to be outside the people’s camp.

The Creator calls the people “stiff-necked” since they have egoistic attributes. “So that I will not go up in your midst!” means that the moment a person has incorrect desires and attributes, they are immediately in conflict with the Light, with the attribute of bestowal, and then there is a destruction again and a descent to the previous state. When the Creator is absent, a person can go wrong along the way.

Indeed our whole way is made of clarifications, trials and errors, and we constantly advance like a missile that is targeted at the goal. It needs to constantly divert and then get back on track, divert and get back, since otherwise it will not feel the movement in the right direction. If the Light begins to shine every time it diverts, it will move the missile off track and will destroy it, so the missile has to look for the Light by itself.

A persons forms the Creator’s attribute inside him by himself, he builds the future upper world inside his feelings by himself. So his movement is based on personal experience. As it is written: “You make Me,” which means that a person forms the Creator inside him.

This advancement is clear in our spiritual work. Attaining the Creator occurs only in the right desire that a person discovers inside him, assembles, connects, and presents as a desire that is ready, necessary; you need a passionate desire to reveal the attribute of love and bestowal.

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33:6-33:7: So the children of Israel divested themselves of their finery from Mount Horeb. And Moses took the tent and pitched it for himself outside the camp, distancing [it] from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting, and it would be that anyone seeking the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

There are such egoistic attributes in each of us with which there is nothing we can do, while the desires that we can raise ascend to the level of Bina, to the attribute of bestowal, to the attribute of Moses. It’s there in these single awakenings that we can be in contact with the Creator for a while. “Outside the camp” means outside all the desires, when we only have one specific intention that is aimed at the goal, to connect to the level of Moses

The Torah, “Exodus” (Ki Tissa), 33: 8: And it would be that when Moses would go out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand, each one at the entrance of his tent, and they would gaze after Moses until he went into the tent.

A tent symbolizes the attribute of Bina, of bestowal. “People,” which means all of a person’s desires, are aimed at this attribute, but cannot move and cannot be in it yet. Only the point called Moses ascends to this level.
