The Last Gates

236.01“All the gates were locked except for the gates of tears.”

It is when all the gates are locked that there is a place for the gates of tears, and then we see that they are not locked. That is, when a person comes to complete concealment, then “my soul shall weep in secret,” because he has no other counsel. And it’s called: “All that your hand and strength can do, do” (Baal HaSulam, Shamati 18).

And then you will reach the gates of tears and force them to open. This is how we enter the palace of the Creator, the upper world; it is only through the gates of tears when you are completely despaired of your own strength and know that nothing can help you, but you must reach the goal. This is the result of great work.

You are one hundred percent sure that you have nothing more to add, and then the entrance to the spiritual opens up to you. Gradually, we form this state called the “gates of tears.”

What are gates? As long as it seems to you that you can do something, you see a wall in front of you. And then you suddenly notice an opening, an opening in that wall, an entrance, and you enter.

That is how it is in spirituality: an insurmountable wall stands before you that gets stronger and higher. And yet, you still try to break through this wall, but you do not find any gates in it, or all the gates are locked.

Seeing a wall in front of you is a very advanced state. But then this wall opens, and suddenly a passage appears in it. My teacher RABASH once told me that this is how it happens in spirituality: there is either a wall or an entrance, and it is impossible to see in advance where the entrance will be in the wall.

This is the wall around your heart. You cannot make a hole in the walls of your heart so that the quality of bestowal, the quality of the Creator, can enter there. The heart is closed, sealed, and covered with an impenetrable hard crust. All that remains is prayer—prayer from the group.

It is necessary to unite together in the ten and ask, ask for everyone, and then one day ask for one person. Today we pray for one friend, tomorrow for another, in turn, for each one. This is how we will begin to get used to demanding from the Creator to take care of the friends.

The Action of the Force of Holiness

243.01Question: Can we say that the force of holiness always affects me in the ten?

Answer: It depends on how you perceive it, how you approach the Creator.

If you believe that in this part of the Kli there is attraction acting upon you, then yes.

How Can We Make Unity in the Ten Our Life

938.03Question: How can we make unity in the ten our entire life and a great delight that we bestow to the Creator?

Answer: It depends on our attitude toward what affects us, bestowal or reception, and on how much we choose between them and want to be closer to the sages or to the Creator through the differences that exist between holiness and the Klipa (impure force).

The Creator Is in Everything

940The Creator is in everything: in the world, in society, in humanity, in the ten. We merely reveal Him there according to our own qualities. Imagine ten people sitting around one table. The Creator is among them ready to be revealed as soon as they establish the correct network of relationships.

Therefore there is nothing left for us to do but take a sheet of paper and draw on it what each one needs to contribute toward the center of the table, so that a true, proper desire forms in that center—the very thing that is required of creation.

It is said that when something is required of me, I must show the correct intention before my friends, and if I cannot, it is okay. The main thing is my willingness. “Help me, and I will try.” That is enough, because it is written that “no one can free himself from prison.” Only others can help me escape my egoism.

There is nothing wrong with ten egoists gathering together all wanting only to receive. But they are willing to sit and work on their egoism in order to bring themselves to the correct interaction, so that a balanced, mutual intention forms between them, with mutual responsibility and a feeling of mutual dependence.

Gradually, they will begin to feel how close they are to one another, and realize that the Creator did not bring them together for nothing. It is precisely in this common connection, in their ten, that He sees something of His own image. Therefore I must relate to each of my friends as someone chosen by the Creator, as someone placed next to me who is not merely a friend but is actually a part of my own soul.

It is said that “there is no place in the world that is empty of Him.” Here “place” means desire. As soon as our desires reach even a minimal state of bestowal and love, we will immediately reveal the Creator within us.

How Can We Obtain Faith in the Sages?

528.01Question: How can we in the ten obtain faith in the sages? Right now our motivation is mostly envy or shame before our friends.

Answer: That is true, but we have to start with something, and it does not matter with what.

Therefore, it is better to begin with what everyone already has and gradually connect your mind and thoughts to what RABASH writes.

Question: Can we say that at first we work for the sake of our friends, the next stage is faith in the sages, and then it is for the love of the Creator? Let’s say we make efforts, and those efforts hold us. How do we then rise from “for the sake of friends” to faith in the sages, with which we can “blunt the teeth” of our egoism so that the body works under the yoke?

Answer: Here you need a slightly different approach. Wait, we will see.

Work for the Sake of the Creator

938.01Question: An ox works under coercion, under the pressure of its owner. That is, the owner is effectively present in its life. How can we make the ten into such a factor that obligates us to move forward?

Answer: There are a few actions we can take for that. First, observe how the friends give each other strength, how they inspire one another, how they hold themselves on the path. In this way, we gradually share the bit of enthusiasm we each have with one another and keep moving forward.

Question: Can we make the ten, which is a visible factor in the work, also become an extension of the Creator, so that the Creator would be revealed in it like that owner?

Answer: No, the Creator does not do that and will not do that. Because then it would turn out that we are working for the Creator because we feel Him.

Question: But is the point not to work for the sake of the Creator?

Answer: The point is to work for the sake of the Creator because we want to give Him contentment.

Question: Can an ox reach a state where it works not out of coercion but because it wants to please the owner?

Answer: For that, several conditions must be fulfilled. The work must not be done under pressure from the Creator. A person must correctly build their desire toward the Creator, meaning to give contentment to the Creator, and they must be free in this. They must decide that their goal is to bring contentment to the Creator.

How Can We Overcome Obstacles?

527Question: Is it correct that an obstacle that arises is overcome through the formation of a new form as a result of greater unity in the ten?

Answer: Yes, continue and you will see how to express this more clearly.

Question: The ego resists accepting a new form. How can we break it more effectively?

Answer: Do not pay attention to the ego. Try to be together, to feel one another, and from that shared feeling, turn to the Creator.

Questions about Spiritual Work—241

528.01Question: How can I feel the friends’ lacks if we do not speak about them directly but only abstractly, not from feelings but from the intellect?

Answer: That does not matter. What matters is what you think, dream about, and decide. You wish to act practically based on your decision.

Question: If I feel certain needs, can I say that the friends lack the same and then pray for the Creator to give it to them as well?

Answer: No, you should not measure the friends by yourself.

Question: How do we check what level of bestowal we have reached in the ten?

Answer: We must reach a level of bestowal that resembles the Creator. But that, of course, is a very high level. And before that it is tens or even hundreds of times less.

Raise the Importance of the Creator

938.03Question: Increasing the greatness of the Creator overcomes all obstacles in the ten. How can we further raise His greatness in the ten and in the entire world Kli so that we can all unite and cover everything with love?

Answer: Only if you are among people who care about it. Together, you raise His greatness in your conversations, meals, actions, and so on. And the higher the importance of the Creator in your eyes, the more you will raise yourself.

Moreover, by elevating the greatness of the Creator, you will please Him.

How Do We Create the Level of Nefesh in the Ten?

530Question: You said we should try to hold onto the light of Nefesh and not fall from it. How can we create this light between us in the ten in order to hold it and then move on to the next level?

Answer: We do not yet know how to do this, but we will strive upward, toward the feeling of the governance of the Creator over us (this is called Nefesh). When each one feels within themselves this level of connection with the Creator on the level of Nefesh, then we will be able to start rising to the level of Ruach, then Neshama, and afterward, perhaps to Haya and Yechida.

It depends on how much a person wants to be close with their friends, and through them, close to the Creator who fills them.
