We constantly work with our egoistic desire, which acts according to its natural property, the desire to receive fulfillment, our only matter. We await the light of correction to come and add an intention for the sake of bestowal to this desire.

We must separate desire and intention. With the desire to enjoy, I always have the opportunity to work and advance. As it says, “Do everything within your power.” But the intention to give to others or to the Creator comes as a result of the influence of the surrounding light. That is what we need to ask for.

That is, I already have half of the spiritual vessel, the desire to enjoy. I am not neglecting or annulling it, I just want to change its intention. If a person correctly separates his attitude toward action and intention, he will always be able to perform some actions and do work, both when spirituality attracts him and when it does not. But the force of unity that was formed in the past helps him.

He will always be able to raise a prayer, a request, for the right intention, so that it joins his action, and determines his spiritual quality. That is how a person advances.

Once he begins to understand more, feel more, and enter the spiritual world, he sees that there is not much difference between the spiritual and the material. It only takes a psychological change in a person to experience the spiritual.

We are not required to cross out our entire past life or override all our basis. We just need to extract the intention from all this and try to bring it to correction.

Therefore a person is happy that he came out of Egypt and brought with him many vessels, desires, and much strength. On the other hand, he is full of selfish intentions, and feels that they are the opposite of the truth. That is what he is starting to work on now. From this state, work begins. Therefore it is considered the point of spiritual birth.

We feel as “You Stand Today, All of You” before the Creator, with our corrupt desires, which we can present to Him as ready for correction.

It is said: “‘I have created the evil inclination, and I created the means for its correction, in which the light that returns to the source is hidden.”  From this it is clear that nothing can be achieved on one’s own, but only through a request, through prayer.

The striving to move toward the intention to bestow, for the benefit of others, even if it is not sincere and even if it completely contrary to the desires that currently rule us, is called prayer, or the raising of MAN.

We have received a tiny spark of spirituality, and in order to break through the boundary of the spiritual world and enter the second part of reality, we lack only the desire. Therefore, all our prayers are solely for one thing: to acquire desire.

But there are states when a person desires nothing at all. One must understand that this, too, is a state given to us from above and not merely our laziness or indifference. A person is a kind of “black box” awakened by signals from above. The light that acts on our material, on the desire to be attuned, awakens it more or less, or leaves it completely indifferent.

Depending on this, we awaken and reach out, like a flower toward sunlight or rain, or we wither and fall, without receiving vital forces. Therefore, if there is no strength or desire for spiritual work, one must understand that just as at one time you received inspiration from above and rushed forward, burned with zeal, and worked, the desire is also taken away from above.

This state is given intentionally and measured precisely according to each person’s individual qualities and preparation in order to create a place for prayer for you. And you must try, with the help of the group, the books, the teacher, and the environment, to mobilize all your strength for a request.

Prayer is born from powerlessness, from lack of desire, or, on the contrary, from an intense longing, it does not matter how; all of these are conditions given from above. Likewise, from above our environment is arranged for us: a group, a teacher, books. And we, through joint study and the group, must find the light that will return us to the source.

When we study together, this is the very time for prayer. For we are then in connection with the higher system, with Malchut and Zeir Anpin of the world of Atzilut, that is, with the Creator and His Shechina. We become included in them, not each one individually, but all together, and thus give birth to a collective prayer. And through this we demand and draw to ourselves the power of change.

It seems like we must pray for fulfillment: “Fill me, fill me!” But the spiritual world is the opposite, the anti-world, because in it the fulfillment is the work itself, the effort, the striving for a goal, the desire to love!

This very desire fills a person. He gets filled with the desire for bestowal, not even from the action itself.

A person is filled with the Creator, and the Creator is the force of bestowal. If we attain the force of bestowal and are filled with the desire to give without even performing the action itself, this is called the stage of Bina. When we realize the act of bestowal, we have reached the stage of Keter, the degree of love. This is the filling.

In our world, it works differently. I perform some action and expect to be paid, so the payment is my fulfillment. But this is not the case in the spiritual world. There, the action itself serves as fulfillment. As it says, “The reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself.”

But there is another addition: “The reward for a commandment is to attain the One who commanded.” That is, we reveal someone inside who is in adhesion with you.…

There is no such thing as requiring payment for the act of giving; otherwise, it is not giving! Therefore, our fulfillment lies in our efforts, in our work, in the very pursuit of spirituality. Like a mother who loves a baby and does not demand his love in return, she is filled with her love for him and her giving alone.

Therefore, we pray only for the desire for bestowal, we need nothing else. If I have such a desire for the Creator, for love, for giving, there is nothing more to ask! This is enough to feel completely fulfilled.

I will be filled with my desires for bestowal, while egoistic desires for enjoyment will never be filled.
They can only be filled with a very weak spark, which is called a “thin candle” (Ner Dakik), a very limited life in this world.

A proper prayer must consist of two parts:

1. Gratitude—praising the Creator for bringing us into the group, uniting us, forming us into a single whole, for responding to our intermediate silly and not-silly requests and whims. Otherwise, to whom are we addressing ourselves?

2. An urgent request for one another, not for oneself. After all, if we all unite correctly, then this request for one another no longer even makes sense, because it immediately turns into a request for the Creator, i.e., we desire to turn to Him.

A mandatory condition must be the understanding that only the Creator can answer our request. He is the only One who exists, the only One who responds and acts in the entire system of creation.

Moreover, we must suffer from the fact that we have a great desire, yet we have not yet received an answer to it. And later, when I receive an answer to my request, I feel joy, delight, and fulfillment. The difference between the magnitude of suffering during the prayer (not animal suffering, not for oneself, but for the benefit of the created beings and the Creator) and my delight upon receiving the answer constitutes the amount and quality of the joy that fills me, that is, the group.

Therefore, the more effort we invest in properly shaping the desire for the light, the closer we will come to it and the faster we will pass the path of forming the correct desire to which the light will respond by entering it. Thus, we will be granted the revelation of the Creator.

And it does not matter how beautifully this desire is formulated or whether it is clothed in lofty words. Only one thing matters—the sincerity of the heart in the request for the friends, for the group, for the world, for the Creator. Then my desire will truly become a desire to bestow, to which the light will instantly respond according to the law of equivalence of form.

Our world operates according to the desire to receive pleasure; that is, every part of creation instinctively makes an internal calculation about what is most beneficial for it, according to its understanding, inner makeup, inborn qualities, upbringing, and the influence of the environment. We are incapable of acting otherwise.

We are not even aware of how much each of us is locked into such an egoistic calculation every single moment. And even when we perform some merciful act, it is only in order to gain something through it; otherwise, we would have no motivation to act that way. This is how all of nature functions, from the smallest atomic particle to the most educated and developed human being.

But there is another intention: for the sake of bestowal, not for one’s own benefit, but for the benefit of the other. This is the anti-world, anti-matter, the complete opposite of everything that exists in this world.

There cannot be even a thought about oneself there; such a thought has undergone restriction (Tzimtzum) and is cut off. Everything is governed and moved solely by concern for the good of the other.

So how can we approach such a vision and such calculations? Naturally, this is not within our power because no such force exists in our world. We must draw it to ourselves from that other, opposite reality that exists beyond the boundary of the spiritual world called the Machsom.

But how is it possible for that force to reach us at all, if everything operates according to the law of equivalence of form, and like connects with like? Yet there is a special force called “the light that returns to the source,” “the light that reforms,” or “surrounding light,” that can shine on us to the extent of our yearning to be in that opposite world.

It helps us even if our yearning is false, even if we do not understand that world or feel it, as long as we have at least some relation to it, a single point of contact with it, the “point in the heart,” a spark of the spiritual world.

If we work on this spark, then to the extent of our efforts, the spiritual force shines upon us and turns these efforts into “spiritual flesh” around that point, which begins to grow. Until it becomes a complete spiritual vessel through which you break through into that very anti-world, and then you find yourself in the “opposite reality.”

The request for the force that brings changes—for the light that returns to the source, that corrects our intentions from egoistic to bestow upon the other—is called prayer. And to the extent of our yearning, our demand, our persistence, this wondrous force acts upon us and carries out changes within us.

The desire for spirituality given to us originally is a point in a person’s heart. Therefore, a person in whom it awakens has to begin to work with this desire and shape it so that it becomes similar to the desire for the light.

Light descends to us through 125 degrees of the worlds: 5 worlds with 5 Partzufim (large steps), each of which has 5 Sefirot, a total of 125.

In our world, we receive it in the form of a very small light Nefesh. “Nefesh” comes from the word “Nefesha,” which means inactive, passively existing, enlivening at the most minimal level and nothing more.

Before beginning to work on ourselves, to reveal our desire, to form it (like, say, we make pastries out of dough) and give desire a specific form and direction, it is necessary to understand what we should strive for. It is said: “Make your desire like that of the upper degree (the Creator), so that it can remake you in its likeness.”

The problem is that we do not know how to achieve this. For this purpose, we have been given our world, in which we can correctly shape ourselves with the help of working with our friends in united prayer, in the united, correctly-tuned, mutual desire.

In striving to unite among ourselves, we talk about coming closer, mutual balance, mutual fulfillment of each other, and mutual support in order to come together to one common desire, a common intention, a common goal.

By this, we form one single correct desire out of everyone, which fully corresponds to the aspirations of each of us, and which is accepted by all at the degree on which we are. Only then will it receive a response from above.

And if the Creator does not answer our prayers, that is, if the upper light does not begin to be felt in our desire, this means that it is not yet unified. The light reacts only to the common desire and the request of ten people united together. Then their desire is directed not at themselves, but at mutual bestowal for one another, for everyone together, and from everyone together to the Creator.

Such a desire is immediately followed by a response from the upper light, which is immediately felt in the group that begins to discover for itself the correct prayer.

Question: You advise us to ask the Creator to correct us and fill us. How should we properly ask for fulfillment?

Answer: Your heart must desire the quality of bestowal and connection with the Creator, and your mind must grasp this state and unite with Him so that this state enters your heart as a passionate longing: “This is the only thing I want.”

Question: But we learn that we should not ask for ourselves. Here it seems like egoism is mixed in. How should we properly process this?

Answer: You can process it correctly only if you think about it from a state of love.

Question: When I fully agree with the Creator, where can I get a demand for the light that returns to the source? After all, I even agree with the fact that I do not have this demand.

Answer: That is absolutely correct. This is precisely the beginning of the desire we must reach.

Start developing it from this point. That is, I want to be connected with the friends, with the Creator, with all our states, and connected in such a way that I feel myself detached from all other desires and goals.

Then we can raise our eyes to Him and demand: “Save us!”

After all, what we must come to, the most important task, is not that we receive whatever is there lying on some shelf, but that we realize that all of this is in the Creator’s power.

The quality of bestowal, the quality of love, the quality of connection are in His power, and we are obliged to implore Him to help us. This is precisely what constitutes the revelation of the Creator to a person.

Question: We constantly kill others with words. And the smarter ones kill gradually, not immediately. So as not to become an enemy, they kill gradually by starting rumors that spread through others. It is our nature to put the other down.

Why doesn’t it hurt me that I slowly humiliate another person, get them out of my way, and kill them?

Answer: I believe the other person does not let me live, that he is my enemy who sees me standing in his way and must destroy me.

Question: Why were we given such a nature to live like this?

Answer: It is all for the same reason, so that we correct our egoism, so that we can be convinced that “love your neighbor as yourself” is the main law of the world.

Comment: In that case, at some point, it should make me feel bad that I am like this.

My Response: Yes, of course.

Question: I see all these wars now, all these killings, directly, indirectly, and so on. And at what point does it come to me: “What am I doing? It is all inside me. How can I get away from this?”

Answer: At the moment of revelation.

Question: And when does this happen? Can this be accelerated, or can something be done? I understand that this is really the most important moment in my life. That everything is in me, that everything is because of me, that I am the killer. Does it come to a person at all?

Answer: When he becomes convinced that he is full of evil, then his true nature is revealed in him, and he can no longer tolerate it and turns to the Creator.

Question: Does this happen unexpectedly for a person? Or is it as if he already wants that?

Answer: No, this revelation usually comes with a serious push.

Question: So there is something before that; is there some kind of impulse after all?

Answer: Yes.

Question: When this is revealed to a person, does prayer to the Creator become natural because one understands that everything depends only on Him?

Answer: Yes, then a person turns to the Creator, judges himself, and by correcting himself, corrects the world around him.
