Answer: We become worthy of the Creator’s response the moment our desires and requests to receive and to bestow align with the Creator’s will toward us. Then we become interconnected.

I receive from the Creator what He sends to me, or I send to the Creator and He receives it. A two-way connection is formed between us. Many Kabbalistic sources speak about this. So we will quickly understand how this connection is established and experienced.

Answer: That depends on you. The Creator is always open. He has no schedule divided into morning or evening, night or day. He is always open and in an active state.

The more often you engage in exercises aimed at uniting with one another and within that unity direct yourselves toward the Creator with a desire to feel His state and how He perceives you, the faster you will establish a close and direct connection with Him.

The only gift we expect from the Creator is the ability to reach bestowal Lishma. Maybe I don’t even know what this truly is because I have never experienced such qualities within myself. But I expect to receive this gift that I currently have no real understanding of.

Lishma is a gift that comes to me from the Creator, a gift that grants me the ability to bestow upon a friend or the Creator without expecting any compensation in return.

While I have not yet received this gift, I want to strengthen my connection with the Creator, i.e., to draw Him closer to me or conversely push myself closer to Him through prayer. I seek to establish a strong bond with Him, one that cannot be broken.

We were born to unite with the Creator, to receive delight from Him through this connection, to be filled by it, and ultimately to achieve similarity of qualities with the Creator.

First  I should try to connect with Him on the same wavelength that came to me as a result of His response. Once I feel that I have established this feedback loop with the Creator, I want to convey my most pressing desire to Him and embed my prayer within the thread that links us. I hope that in response the Creator will establish an unbreakable connection between us.

Thus, I continuously exchange messages with Him. I reach out to the Creator, and the Creator responds to me, and I am getting closer and closer to Him. I am constantly trying to understand what the Creator wants from me, how He wants us to unite with our friends so that through this unity we can turn to Him together.

Through this process we will discern what kind of relationship or wavelength evokes a response from Him, and in doing so, we will build our connection with the Creator.

I must exert effort to extend a thread from myself to the Creator and in turn to draw a thread from the Creator back to myself. When this reciprocal connection is established, I can be certain of a two-way bond.

The essence of the science of Kabbalah is precisely in establishing this mutual connection between a person and the Creator. This connection, known as Lishma, is a gift from the Creator.

When the measure of labor is complete, it is the time of prayer, but until then, believe in our sages: “I did not labor and found, do not believe.”

When the measure is full, your prayer will be complete and the Creator will grant generously, as our sages instructed us, “I labored and found, believe,” for one is unfit for a prayer prior to this, and the Creator hears a prayer (Baal HaSulam, Letter 57).

This entire world, all the upper worlds, all their degrees descending from above downward, and all our work in this world are designed to lead us to a request, a cry, a prayer, a plea to the light, to the Creator asking Him to perform our correction. Our task is only to reveal the need for this correction, and in this there will be no concessions.

The need for correction consists of several components. First one must understand precisely what is corrupted and what kind of correction is necessary. Then one must realize that they are incapable of performing this correction on their own and that only the Creator can accomplish it. However, the Creator will act only if one genuinely feels the need for this correction and demands help from Him.

Thus, this cry encompasses many elements. Only through specific work and persistent efforts, carried out according to the advice of the Kabbalists, through long, arduous, and exhausting efforts, do we come to attain this fundamental concept that underpins everything. It is called “prayer,” the first request and initial contact with the Creator.

Everything is arranged in such a way that we have no task other than to prepare ourselves for this prayer. The upper light governs all, while we, as creations, are only capable of revealing within ourselves the need for correction. Therefore, the person, the study, the group, all our actions, and the entire world that seemingly surrounds us, all of these exist to help form the correct request from creation to the Creator, a request to which the light must respond.

It is said that “the cow wants to nurse more than the calf wants to suckle.” Nonetheless, according to the order of the degrees, this desire from above cannot act until there is a preceding desire from below. Therefore it is we who activate the upper light and draw its influence toward us, so we have no room for complaints.

Do not claim that you are already crying out and praying. It is a misunderstanding to think you can pray before the prayer has been born and formed as a result of your efforts. One must internalize many concepts to develop the desire capable of awakening the light.

After all, this is not simply a prayer read from a prayer book that dictates where one should weep and where one should rejoice. We must achieve a prayer that emerges from the depths of the heart. The work within the heart is what is called true prayer.

Thus, nothing will help except to apply efforts in accordance with the advice of our teachers. In this way we will shape the correct need within ourselves through the surrounding light. With every action we awaken small illuminations that gradually construct our desire and bring it to a state where it becomes suitable for correction.

Question: What is the most effective method of interaction among students?

Answer: Internal, without any writing or talking, from heart to heart.

Comment: You say you feel this from the heart, but we don’t. It’s really hard for us to understand.

My Response: No, it’s not hard at all. In fact, you simply tune into the waves that exist around us. You need to adjust yourself to them. It’s literally like a radio receiver.

Question: But you cannot lose spiritual attainment if you distance yourself from the group, can you?

Answer: Of course not, because within me, this oscillatory circuit already exists.

Do you know how a simple crystal radio receiver works? I remember how as boys we used to build one without even using a battery. We’d take a long antenna, say, twenty meters, a coil, a diode, and a headphone, and that was it. We’d hang the antenna outside and connect the other end to the ground. It would pick up signals, and you’d hear them.

In this analogy, the coil represents the surrounding environment, which amplifies the signals. You are the detector, which must allow waves to pass only in one direction to resonate with the coil. The headphone is your perception organ, your quality of bestowal: your sense, your ear. Nothing else is needed.

The setup works on the same principle as a crystal radio receiver, the simplest device for catching waves. If we examine other devices, they all operate according to this principle.

You must tune yourself to a single wave, a single direction. Nearby, there must be an environment that amplifies this direction. You enter into resonance and catch the wave through the quality of bestowal.

The large antenna represents the desire to catch the upper force, while grounding is essential to work accurately with your egoism and your desires. The earth symbolizes desire.

It is written in The Book of Zohar: “Whoever wants to awaken the upper force, whether in action or speech,” And the question arises: “How can we influence it?”

It is either by our inner feelings, thoughts, or by our external actions, that is, by action or speech. By speech, we mean what comes out of a person, not necessarily words, but also thoughts and all his motives.

If these actions are not directed correctly, they do not produce anything and can even prevent proper contact between us and the upper force in which we exist.

It is written in The Book of Zohar that everyone living in the world turns to the upper force to awaken it, but few can do this.

We are talking about a very special state of connection between us and the Creator. Basically, we are in Him, and everything we do has a direct effect on Him; there is no one between us and Him. But the fact is, not all our actions can awaken Him.

The Creator, as stated in The Book of Zohar, is close to everyone who knows how to call on to Him and awaken Him properly.

How can we achieve the quality of bestowal, as it is said: “Be merciful as He is merciful”? How can we come to a state of similarity of properties to the Creator? That is what prayer is for.

In my request, I must necessarily realize that if I simply ask the Creator for something, then I am asking for myself, for my egoism, no matter how I twist it. But if I ask through my friends, only in connection with them, then I can ask correctly from everyone in general and for myself.

That is, a person has no opportunity to ask correctly if he is alone. Only if he is in connection with others and asks for the group, including himself but for the group, then his request is to some extent spiritual.

And if he asks for them, they are the goal; he pushes them to the Creator and wants to see them merge with Him because he is like Malchut and they are like the first nine Sefirot, then his request is truly spiritual.

Therefore, we must go through several stages of preparation for prayer in order to ask the Creator correctly.

If we ask incorrectly, He will still hear us, we are in Him, inside Him. But then this field will react to us according to our egoistic desires and push us to greater and greater egoism as it happens when we ask unconsciously.

But with the help of these pushes toward egoism, we will reveal the Pharaoh. It turns out that he is evil and not so kind; we are in exile in him and must get out of this. Then we will begin to ask for others and not for ourselves. And we will see ourselves only as asking, as representatives of all humanity.

We must definitely do this. We must try to understand our request. What is it for: for ourselves, for the group, for all of humanity or for the Creator? If it is for ourselves, even for the group, even for humanity, this may still be an egoistic request, for the Creator too. How can we rebuild all of this in an altruistic way? It is when I really ask for others.

The Torah, derived from the word “Or” (Light), is a method of correction. It is written: “Better they abandoned Me but kept My Torah” ( Jerusalem Talmud, Chagigah 1.7). That means stop praying and asking as the entire world does for egoistic benefit and instead try to request a directed influence from Me so that I may draw you closer to Myself and make you participants in My actions.

That is what the Creator desires from us. To achieve this, we must change ourselves, become similar to Him, and then we will participate in His actions. Not merely participate but actually carry them out as His proxies and instruments. To the extent that our desires align with His, we will perform this work.

At this stage, our work will be called “the work of the Creator.” We will not merely recognize that everything is done by the Creator; we will begin to adopt His actions and perform them. It is not that we will become independent in this state, but we will appear to be so.

This feeling of autonomy is marvelous; it elevates us to a state where the Creator gradually, step by step, entrusts us with the governance of all creation. We will, as it were, govern it in His stead. That is the state of “receiving for the sake of bestowal.”

I believe these states are more or less clear to us theoretically, but practically they can only be realized in a group. This is why the convention is so essential to us. Learning at home and listening to these teachings is not the issue; the challenge lies in attempting to integrate with others and come under their influence despite our egoism.

When I come to a convention, my focus is on whether I can absorb, like a sponge, everything that others possess. That is precisely what I want, not egoistically, but to absorb everything so that I can become like them and reflect back everything I have received. These two actions are what we must strive to perform.

To achieve this, we need to open ourselves. Everything else should be set aside for the duration of the convention. I must include within myself everything that the convention can influence me with, include everyone within me, and strive to fully absorb their aspirations, desires, and everything else.
