The Gates of Prayer Are Not Locked

534In corporeality, you can see the door just as you can see the opening. But in spirituality, you see only the opening. But you cannot see the opening unless with complete and pure faith. Then you see the door, and at that moment it turns into an opening because He is one and His name is “One” (Baal HaSulam, Letter 26).

Namely, I see before me stands a wall through which it is impossible to penetrate, go around, or leap over. But the moment I reveal the quality of faith, this quality forms an entrance in the wall, and I pass through. I wish this for all of us.

The gates of prayer are not locked. We must constantly try, together with our friends, to pray to the Creator to help us unite, to clarify what is called the force of bestowal, and to reach Him with this force of bestowal.

We are obligated to reach such a state, to give all the quantity and quality of efforts in order to arrive at the gate of tears. Only through the gate of tears does one enter the upper world, the spiritual.

We must pray for each friend in the group that he may reach the gate of tears, the spiritual world, everything! “He who prays for his friend is answered first.” This greatly advances people.

But this is not about words; prayer is called “work in the heart.”

The gate of tears is a special gate that opens only when a person understands that he has no strength whatsoever to perform even the slightest act of bestowal. Yet at the same time, he must attain these acts of bestowal  no matter what. He is ready to give up everything just to become one who bestows. Then these gates open.

Work In Lo Lishma

268.02Question: Does the dialogue between a person and his desire to receive happen when he is in Lo Lishma or in Lishma?

Answer: A person is not yet in Lishma. The dialogue between him and his desire to receive happens before that. It is the degree that allows him to rise to Lishma.

Question: So I must receive this strength from the Creator in order to ascend? Since the strength of faith in the sages comes only from the Creator?

Answer: Yes, of course.

Question: In that case, should I turn in prayer to the Creator so that I have this strength to rise and perform an act of bestowal?

Answer: That depends on the person, how he positions himself in relation to the Creator, desiring to be in adhesion with Him in all states: in descents, ascents. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, he wants to simply be connected with the Creator.

If he strives toward this state, then he begins to see how he can be connected with the Creator.

The Gate of Tears

43The Gate of tears is a special gate leading to the Creator. There are many gates to the Creator, but only one of them opens, the gate of tears.

The Zohar explains this very simply: There is only one entrance to the Creator, there is no need for confusion.

A person comes into contact with the upper force when he truly cries from lack of strength, from the impossibility of continuing to live like this, from the fact that he really gave it all he has got.  When one bursts into tears, the Creator reveals Himself to the person.

One day I tried to cry before RABASH from the bottom of my heart. He laughed in my face. I was ready to tear him apart back then. But there is nothing you can do. That was at a relatively early stage of learning.

All the gates are really locked, except for the gate of tears. Upon revealing the full extent of one’s ego, one’s whole desire, giving and relating everything to the Creator, a person reaches the final state: “This is it! There is nothing more I can do!”

But if he does not get an answer, it means these are empty tears, like a child who cries for any reason. Then he has to keep working and, someday, everything will be revealed to him.

The right desire is not expressed in crying one’s eyes out. It is a state where, on one hand a person is in complete powerlessness, and on the other, has a great desire to give to the Creator what he has prepared for Him, but the Creator does not want to accept it.

In such a state, a person suddenly begins to reveal a material egoistic desire, which, it turns out, is deeply hidden inside his “pure” spiritual aspirations. And he begins to dig it out of himself, to purge himself of it.

Then he turns to the Creator again with a request, and suddenly sees the egoistic desire stuck in him again, although earlier it seemed to him that he was already absolutely pure and cleansed.

Now the main thing is to never give up and to realize that your attitude toward the Creator is the same as His attitude toward you. This is a full reflection. The Creator is the upper light, completely at rest, only the creation is changing.

Therefore, if it seems to you there are changes in the Creator, these changes are in you, you see yourself as if in a crooked mirror. After all, before you correct yourself, you see the Creator in relation to yourself in the opposite reflection, in the negative relative to the positive.

It is written: “The Creator is close to you in the measure you are close to the Creator.” The Baal Shem Tov explained this with the words “The Creator is your shadow.” That is, if you can observe your shadow, your reflection against the background of white light, then this is the Creator.

Questions about Spiritual Work—240

281.02Question: Ultimately who is at war with the evil inclination, us or the Creator?

Answer: The Creator, and we help Him by pushing Him to do this, by supporting Him with our constant connection. This is the only way.

Question: If during the day one discovers he is not in a real war, there is no sincere prayer for inclusion in his friends, for helping them, then you need to start mentally developing this prayer.

I noticed that the evil inclination works against this thought, devalues it by saying if this is not a sincere prayer, it is better not to even start it. It seems pointless, it is not a real war. How does thinking of friends give them the strength to fight?

Answer: Here you need to take several cases like this and sort them out one against the other, then you will understand how to discern them.

Question: When we feel the strong influence of the Creator on us, is our effort to use the power of the group to come to inner peace, to hold it, or to feel in these efforts how the Creator rejoices? After all, it is written, our heart will rejoice in Him.

Answer: What will our hearts rejoice in? Only in the point where your qualities merge with those of the Creator.

Question: What kind of help do we need from our friends?

Answer: We need support. We only need an example and support in actions, which I acquire from my friends and wish to implement.

Match the Creator

237During the work, a person should say, “If I am not for me, who is for me?” At that time in the work, they think that they themselves are doing the ascents and descents, that they are men of war, called Tzava, “mighty men.” Afterward, when they are redeemed, they attain that the Lord is of hosts [Tzevaot], meaning that the Creator made all the ups and downs they had (RABASH, Article No. 6, “What Is Above Reason in the Work?“).

Question: Why is the Creator called a warrior? After all, He does everything; He gives both descents and ascents.

Answer: In order to participate in the movement of a person and of humanity, we must in some way correspond to the Creator.

Therefore, it is said here that we need to take an active part in this, examining and correct ourselves through prayer, in everything in which we discover our insufficient participation.

A Prayer at the Grave of a Righteous Person

935Question: Could you explain how the place where we raise a prayer is connected to the strength of that prayer? Yesterday, a part of our group went to Radun, and we prayed at the grave of a righteous person. Everyone felt the power of that prayer.

Answer: That is exactly how it should be. First of all, it is a special place. And second, it is because you genuinely wanted it. At that moment, you felt that your desires were aligning. They did not contradict each other, but rather complemented one another.

If you continue to act this way with regard to all your desires, then you will form such a unified desire that it will surely have an impact on the Creator.

A Simple Axiom

88Question: Is our only choice intention?

Answer: Of course, an intention is called action.

Question: The intention can be either for the sake of receiving or for the sake of giving. But when it is for the sake of receiving, you receive blows. So how can we choose a direction?

Answer: Our choice is not to go in the right direction, but to strengthen ourselves and go in the right direction not with the help of blows, but due to importance.

Sooner or later, you will go in that direction. You are making progress today too, but each time it is because of blows. There is another possibility, to advance with the help of increasing importance.

What is the purpose of creation? To delight the creations. What should the creation do? Achieve the purpose of creation. That is, for the Creator, the goal is to please His creations, and you must come to the same point. When will you get to this point? When your attitude is the same: “to delight His creations.” It is very simple!

How Do We Compose a Proper Prayer?

940Question: What is the correct way to compose a daily prayer? One option is for it to be a long, well thought-out prayer. Or is it better to leave it as it is where each friend contributes a suggestion from the feelings of the morning lesson? Can you suggest some way to  compose a prayer in a ten?

Answer: Once or twice a week, you can compose an individual prayer from each person, and then talk about it, compare prayers, bring them to one form, to one goal. This can give progress.

Question: What does individual prayer mean? So that we can compare and analyze it later?

Answer: It does not matter. Do as much as you can. It is not scary. In a few days, we will return to connecting our waves, our hearts, and then we will talk about it.

From External to Internal Action

275Question: In the war against the evil inclination, we are essentially fighting against the will of the Master, the Creator, of this desire. After all, the desire to receive is a function entirely controlled by Him. So does that mean that fighting the evil inclination actually means fighting the Creator who made it? How then can we fight Him?

Answer: By asking the Creator to help us overcome our evil inclination.

The Creator made it by His external action so that through this external action we would come to an internal one.

Feel the Creator as the One Who Fills the Soul

243.04Question: It is said that one must turn to the Creator from the depth of the heart. What is this depth, and how can we reach exactly this request?

Answer: We must call upon the Creator for a variety of connections with Him, so that our attitude toward Him is always in the same direction, that is, aimed only toward Him, but different in the qualities we would like to receive from Him.

If we do this, then gradually something similar to the Creator will form within us, and in this Kli, which is called the soul, we will feel the Creator as the one who fills our soul.

Question: Should we feel that we bring contentment to the Creator by our actions?

Answer: Yes, we should. To a certain extent, we must still feel the bestowal from the Creator, the way He responds to our attitude toward Him.
