What Is the Foundation of Advancement?

528.01Question: If Baal HaSulam says that the shattering essentially did not exist, does this mean that the desire to receive for oneself also does not truly exist?

Answer: It exists, but not in a revealed form.

We need to understand that our advancement is based on the fact that we reveal our states relative to uncorrected Kelim, and we therefore feel increasingly shattered. In this way, our state depends solely on what we are searching for within our current state, what we desire to attain.

In principle, it turns out that we draw closer to the shattered Kli and then start to analyze it in parts.

From there, based on the shattering between the parts of the Kli, we raise a prayer to the Creator so that He would help us come together, recognize the separation between us, and clearly see our entire path .

What do We Need to Reveal to Unite More?

528.04Question: It is said that correction is only possible over the shattering. What kind of shattering should this be? What must we reveal in order to unite more?

Answer: We must reveal the very shattering in which we currently find ourselves. Only then will we be precisely aligned for its correction.

We need to understand what a corrected Kli is and what a corrupted Kli is, and compare the positive connection between the parts of a whole Kli and a shattered one.

Only then will we be able to feel within our own Kelim (our desires), what a shattered Kli and a corrected Kli truly are.

Then we will have a clear idea of what we need to ask of the Creator.

The Principle and Purpose of the Gatherings of Friends

933Gatherings of friends were implemented among Kabbalists throughout all centuries and were highly effective and popular. Kabbalists gathered together to discuss their spiritual work.

When I brought new students who had no connection to Kabbalah to my teacher, he began organizing them into groups of 10 to 15 people. He wrote articles for us, which we read at weekly meetings.

We would meet at one person’s house or another’s and study these articles together. That was what the gatherings of friends were about back then.

Today, after many years of studying Kabbalah, our gatherings of friends have taken on a different form. Our global group includes several thousand people around the world. That is why we hold large, unified gatherings for all our friends, with video broadcasts, translations into many languages, and so on.

Does this still count as a gathering of friends? I believe it is exactly what it should be because we place special emphasis on the connections between us.

It does not matter whether we study a specific article at these gatherings or not, since in principle, we do that during our regular lessons. What matters is that we try to draw even closer to one another because to the extent that we achieve sensory and conscious closeness, we come closer to the feeling of the Creator. That is the principle and goal of the gathering of friends.

A Wire Stretched to Us from the World of Infinity

921A good environment consists of the Rav and the friends. If a student does not adhere to the teacher like the lower’s GE (Galgalta ve Eynaim) to the upper’s AHP, if one does not annul oneself in one’s most refined point, which one has discovered within oneself, the point in the heart, and does not attach this point to the teacher, meaning to the teacher’s views and spirit, then one has no place from which to receive the spirit of life. The person will lack the force that develops the Reshimo, the spiritual gene.

This matter is very straightforward: either there is such a connection or there isn’t. And much of it depends on help from above and spiritual luck. It is determined, not by external circumstances, but by the internal efforts made by a person, along with various factors related to the root of one’s soul and the judgment that this soul is going through.

If there is no connection with the teacher, then, as it is written in Shamati 25, “Things that Come from the Heart,” As long as he has no power to sentence the world to the side of merit, they subdue him, he mingles with their desires, and he is led like sheep to the slaughter. He has no choice; he is compelled to think, want, crave, and demand everything that the majority demands.

There is nothing a person can do against this. Even if he is physically close to the teacher, who is like the end of a spiritual conduit for him that descends from the world of infinity through the chain of Kabbalists, if he doesn’t connect to this pipeline, he receives no spiritual nourishment and therefore he does not develop.

In the past there were cases where a teacher would raise a single student. But in general, the teacher tends to his students through the group, connecting to its center.

The group, for the teacher, is the lower spiritual entity. The student who can connect to the center of the group, after having fulfilled two essential conditions of annulment in relation to the group and connection with the friends, will be able to connect to the teacher through that center.

The teacher is called Rav (great) because he is the upper Partzuf, the upper degree, in relation to the students. To the extent that a student annuls himself toward the group’s center, he receives, via the connection with the others, a vessel into which he can absorb the teacher’s thought and spiritual attainment.

But this annulment must be total from the depth of the heart and soul in everything that pertains to the spiritual path and authority over one’s egoism.

Deception or Transformation of One’s Nature?

528.04Comment: When we talk in the group about loving one another, everyone clearly understands that they are working against their will, lying to each other, and deceiving. But through this, they attract the upper light.

My Response: Why do you say deceiving?! It’s not deception! I know that I’m in my egoistic desire and want to get out of it. I show others my enthusiasm for the desire to exit my egoism, in order to receive their inspiration in return. We are not deceiving each other! Knowing our nature, we act completely openly.

It’s not a game where I lie, where I’m one person inside and another on the outside. I deliberately act this way precisely in order to transition from our world into the upper world.

If you have two natures, egoistic and altruistic, then you have no other way to rise above the egoistic one except to play in the altruistic nature, like a child playing at being an adult. Gradually, under the influence of the upper light, it becomes real within you. Here we act absolutely logically, rationally, and in no way are we deceiving anyone.

Comment: It’s not exactly deception. Many people do these things through force.

My Response: That is exactly right, through force! So what?! In our world, we do everything through force. That’s natural.

If I’m facing a task that I don’t desire according to my natural inclinations, something I can agree with intellectually, but not emotionally, how else am I supposed to act? Come up with another method.

Comment: I’m not even talking about the method.

My Response: Kabbalah is the method, the method of rising from our world into the upper world, the way to transform one’s nature using the tools we have.

Give me the layout! I know it well, and that’s why it’s absolutely clear to me that all of this is very straightforward and it simply can’t work any other way. This is science! A method! A psychological, physiological, mental, and spiritual methodology for elevating a person to a new way of thinking and acting.

If You See the Friends as Corrected…

938.01Question: What is the state when you see the friends as fully corrected? In that state there is strength to work in order to become like them, to be near them. What kind of work is required here?

Answer: The most important thing we need is to reveal that everything happening to us occurs because we are distant from one another and are unable to be together and support each other.

We have no other way to draw closer to the corrected state except by awakening the need for correction within ourselves, that is, for closeness between us. Then we will succeed.

Question: But when we see the friends as already corrected, what kind of work is required from us then?

Answer: It only seems to us that we are corrected. We must determine to what extent we are still uncorrected in relation to our root, the Creator. Then we will gain a clear understanding of what exactly we need to correct.

The Action of the Force of Holiness

243.01Question: Can we say that the force of holiness always affects me in the ten?

Answer: It depends on how you perceive it, how you approach the Creator.

If you believe that in this part of the Kli there is attraction acting upon you, then yes.

Connect with a Group leads to the Creator

528.01If a person’s actions are directed toward connection with friends, he very quickly discovers the necessity for a direct connection with the Creator who must help with that connection. Every action should lead to the correction of the shattering, unity between us, and then the need for the Creator’s action; the quality of bestowal and love, is manifested in it.

Then the three components of our state are revealed: Torah, Israel, and the Creator.

The Torah is the force that creates desire (the world was created by the Torah), the force that corrects the intention of desire (the light that reforms), and the force that fills the desire (pleasure and wisdom, the purpose of creation).

“Love your neighbor as yourself” is the general rule of the Torah. “Israel” (aspiring to the Creator, the soul) is the common Kli (the connection of souls, Shechina). The Torah is the light, the correcting force. The Creator is the inner source of that force.

Together, we create the condition for unity and mutual guarantee, we prepare a place for the revelation of the Creator. Right up to, “The children of Israel cried out from the work,” when we truly need His help.

In nearly all descriptions of the Torah, we see a comparison of society and the Creator. Without society, we cannot come to the Creator. Therefore, the group is the means. It is the Shechina, the Knesset of Israel, the gathering of souls who ask not to remain in the dust (egoism). All the writings speak about this.

A person forgets the need for connection with the Creator because it is against his nature, but this connection will appear within our nature if we unite in a group. If I am not connected with the group, I am not directed and will not find the direction toward the Creator.

How Can We Make Unity in the Ten Our Life

938.03Question: How can we make unity in the ten our entire life and a great delight that we bestow to the Creator?

Answer: It depends on our attitude toward what affects us, bestowal or reception, and on how much we choose between them and want to be closer to the sages or to the Creator through the differences that exist between holiness and the Klipa (impure force).

Agreeing With the Creator

249.01At that time, a person should pay attention to this and believe that the Creator is tending to him and guides him on the track that leads to the King’s palace (RABASH, Article No. 6, “When One Should Use Pride in the Work“).

A person must constantly check in all one’s sensations and thoughts and in one’s heart and mind, if one agrees with the fact that the Creator is guiding him or her toward Himself?

“Do I agree with what the Creator is doing with me? He throws me down, lifts me up, tosses me in every direction. One moment I cry, the next I laugh; sometimes I rejoice, sometimes I’m distressed. Do I understand that I must go through these states, but that the most important thing is to remain in connection, in adhesion with the Creator—that there is none else besides Him?”

It follows that he should be happy that the Creator is watching over him and gives him the descents, as well. That is, a person should believe, as much as he can understand, that the Creator is giving him the ascents…

Also, a person should believe that the Creator gives him the descents, as well, because He wants to bring him closer. Therefore, every single thing that he can do, he must do as though he is in a state of ascent.

In principle, there are no descents. What occurs is merely the revelation of the next uncorrected degree, followed by its correction. These degrees are revealed to us—they were formed even before us as a result of the shattering of Adam HaRishon. And we continuously correct them through our attitude.

Nothing is required from us! We do not need to do anything except to agree with the Creator, to justify Him.

The Hebrew word “to justify” is “LeHatzdik,” and a person who justifies the Creator is called a Tzadik, a righteous one, because he justifies Him. That is our entire work. But for this, we absolutely need an environment; without it, we will not be able to justify even a single act of the Creator, neither emotionally nor mentally.

Therefore, when he overcomes a little during the descent, it is called an “awakening from below.” Each act that he does, he believes that it is the Creator’s will, and by this itself he is rewarded with greater nearing, meaning that the person himself begins to feel that the Creator has brought him closer.
