How Can You Grasp Spirituality?
All of the souls extend from the soul of Adam HaRishon, for after he sinned in the sin of the Tree of Knowledge, his soul divided into 600,000 souls.
This means that the one light that Adam HaRishon had, which The Zohar called Zihara Ila’a [upper brightness], which he had in the Garden of Eden at once, spreads into numerous pieces (Rabash, Article 10 (1984) “To What Degree One must Attain In Order To Not Reincarnate”).
The Creator created a desire opposite Himself, seemingly separated from Him. The Creator is the attribute of bestowal. Desire is a property of reception. But in the state in which it was created, desire does not experience opposition to the Creator. Therefore, it undergoes division into 600,000 parts.
Six hundred thousand is a conditional concept. In spirituality, there is no division into parts or stages. We divide it this way for ourselves to grade, label, weigh, and determine spiritual states. In reality, spirituality is a continuous field without any distinctions.
Only when we try to feel and understand it and we need to somehow grasp it in our feelings and thoughts, do we divide it relative to ourselves into gradations and facets, although it is indivisible.
For example, consider air. Suppose we are trying to define what air is; we must divide it relative to ourselves into some quantities, values, and qualities. By itself, it may not have them at all, but otherwise, we cannot grasp or define it.
Therefore, for us to comprehend the Creator, He specifically created within Himself the desire to bestow and give pleasure. However, He does not represent the desire to bestow, to fill, a good or evil desire—all these manifest only in relation to the creations.
