“Suspended Coffee” Re-Educates the Rich

560In the News (NPR):

“On March 27, 2013, John Sweeney, a plumber from Ireland, started a Facebook page called Suspended Coffees. His message was simple: Buy a cup of coffee for a stranger, because an act of kindness can change a life. Eight hours later, the page had attracted more than 20,000 likes.

“Suspended coffee, or caffe sospeso, is a tradition that comes from Naples, Italy, and dates to at least the turn of the 20th century. When customers buy coffee, they also pay in advance for a cup to be given to somebody else — usually someone who otherwise couldn’t afford it. …

“One challenge to making kindness through coffee a staple of American culture is that ‘we’re a society that isn’t very comfortable, culturally, with asking for help,’

Question: Is it possible to come up with such harmony for humanity so that those who have money and opportunity would present something without their names and others would use it without humiliating themselves at the request? Would it bring us closer to harmony or not?

Answer: Partially, yes.

Question: What is the most important element here? That it is offered up and is anonymous?

Answer: That is natural, no last names, nothing. Neither who gives nor who receives. That is how everything exists incognito.

Question: Is there harmony in this?

Answer: Sure.

Question: Does the fact that I give something of mine away without demanding anything in return make the world warmer, better?

Answer: Partially. Our egoism will not allow us to do this every day. You can do this for a week or so but not all the time.

Question: So it cannot be a process of upbringing that leads to this and we would live like this all the time?

Answer: No.

Question: There must be ups and downs?

Answer: Otherwise it will be like some kind of tax and so on.

Question: It would no longer be an effort?

Answer: Yes, and there must be an effort.

Question: It is clear that this is a process of education more for someone who suspends, that is, for a rich person. And for the one who accepts, what is here? Is there any kind of upbringing for him?

Answer: He must understand that someone has thought of him. And therefore, when he gets the same opportunity, he will have to do it too.

Question: It is beautiful! Is a mutual upbringing process taking place?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Is it possible to do this?

Answer: This is a mutual agreement. This can, of course, be done.

It is possible to come to this through education. A person becomes educated and then it becomes a habit. And he thinks about it, does not forget, and does it. Or it could be under pressure, like some kind of tax.

But there is no other way because egoism in us is constantly growing and requires that we feed it.

Question: So a person will somehow adapt to these efforts?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can we say what the final way to harmony is?

Answer: The final approach to harmony is when we do not feel our egoism would force us to do something. It is when we rise above it and are truly free. This is, of course, aerobatics! But it will happen.

Question: You slowly lead into a mini-dead-end, and then suddenly you say: “But it will be.” Do you want to calm us down or will it happen?

Answer: I am sure this will happen, and humanity must come to this. It is written in our genes.

Nurture a Spiritual Heart

527.03Question: How can I determine in which quality I need to adhere to the Creator now?

Answer: According to what your heart leans toward. You should follow the path where your heart guides you.

And not your animalistic heart but the one you want to expand within yourself so it becomes more connected with the Creator, with the quality of bestowal and love.

You must constantly nurture and grow this heart.

Question: You advise listening to one’s heart, but how can we trust this advice when it is said that the heart of a person is evil from birth?

Answer: You must correct it, and to the extent that it is corrected, you will feel that you are in the right position.

The Symbolic Meaning of the Number of Souls

275Question: I feel some kind of mystery behind the number “600,000.” Is this feeling correct?

Answer: “600,000” is a purely symbolic marking of the number of souls that must unite to fully reveal the Shechina. Therefore, you should not cling to the number.

The main thing for us is to be together in mutual help and fulfillment of one another so that we can feel the entire Kli, the entire soul together. Then we will succeed.

Know Your “Horse”

198Question: Can a person have power over his “horse” (body)? Doesn’t the system work so we work for the Creator and receive light from Him, which corrects my “horse” and my entire desire to receive?

Answer: As a rule, the horse takes the owner’s care of him for granted. But if so, why does the owner keep him in the stable rather than his home? It is because at home, a horse can smash and dirty everything.

Therefore, the owner builds a stall for it and keeps it there only for the horse to serve him; otherwise, he would not have put him there.

A person believes he is the master of his body, which is like a horse. He tells his body: “I give you so much food and care, not because I love you, but because you can work for the Creator. I cannot work for the Creator directly; I can only work through you. And what I give you, you receive only to the extent that you direct yourself to the Creator. If you work this way, you fulfill my intentions and further my actions—for the sake of the Creator.”

Therefore, it is considered that the horse belongs to its owner and receives everything necessary from him to benefit the owner. This is called “for the sake of bestowal.”

This is how a person performs good actions for the Creator, for himself, and his “horse.”

Question: How can a person determine what restrictions should be imposed on his “horse” at a given time?

Answer: To do this, he just needs to know his “horse” and do everything for its good work. That is, a person does not think about the Creator, and does not think about himself or the “horse”; he thinks of how to do a good deed for the Creator through the “horse.”

Question: What if, due to these restrictions, the “horse” starts bucking and behaving worse?

Answer: Then we need to get the “horse” in order. The “horse” must understand that what the owner does to it is necessary.

How Can a Person Desire to Know the Creator and Not What He Gives?

276.02Question: How can one open their heart to the Creator so that He takes us out of egoism?

Answer: This is precisely why we study the wisdom of Kabbalah. It is to understand how to receive everything the Creator wants to give us, which can only happen through the connection between us.

Therefore we must strive to connect above our egoistic desires, and to the same extent, the Creator can be revealed within us.

Question: How can one desire to know the Creator Himself and not just what He gives?

Answer: It depends on your readiness to connect with the Creator rather than receive from Him. You must be ready to accept what He wishes to give in order to connect with Him and bring Him contentment through that connection.

In Gratitude to the Creator

239Question: Is gratitude something that comes from above, or do we need to acquire it as a certain skill when, despite of everything and in spite of everything, we are in joy and gratitude?

Answer: The most important problem of our world is selfishness, which separates us from each other. At congresses we become involved in something common and make all sorts of movements toward each other, maybe even artificial ones. There is no natural love between us. We are the same as all earthly creatures.

Therefore by making efforts and coming together, we caused a great outflow of kindness from above from the Creator. Now we need to take this benefit into ourselves, digest it and continue on.

Question: Why is it so important for Kabbalists to be grateful to the Creator?

Answer: The Creator feels our reaction to His actions. If we react correctly to the fact that He gathers us, brings us closer, and forms one common desire from us, then by recognizing His attitude toward us we raise His greatness, His role, and His value in our eyes. In this way we deserve to be treated kindly even more.
