The Book of Zohar, “VaYechi” (And Jacob Lived), Item 9: …To revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the depressed. “The heart of the depressed is Jacob” since below the degree, from the Achoraim (posterior), the prophecies and the blessings came down upon him in Egypt, and Egypt is considered Achoraim. This is why his heart is depressed.

Question: What is a broken heart in the spiritual work?

Answer: A broken heart is a desire with which I cannot do anything, but it stands before me like a barrier, an obstacle, that I cannot go through. If I don’t remove it, I will not reach anything and then “I would rather die than live.” It is a good state because then I need the Creator’s mercy.

Question: When we read The Zohar it sounds like music, but at the same time I try to understand the meaning of the words and not to forget the right intention. However, it is impossible to remember everything at once. So what is most important?

Answer: While listening to the pleasant voice of the reader and enjoying the music of The Zohar, it is most important to keep thinking about my own problems, which means to keep thinking about how I can reach the love of friends where I can feel something towards the Creator.

The Zohar tells us about what was revealed to people who managed to connect. It is very simple: When you connect somehow you suddenly hear; it is as if you have caught a radio wave and you suddenly see it. These are the two levels of attainment: Hassadim and Hochma, and they write about what they see.

This is how The Book of Zohar was written. Now we have to try to connect between us just like they did in order to see what they see.

We now see a very special form on the level of this world with our corporeal heart and mind. It is the form of the infinite shattering. We have to try to reveal the dependence of our attitude to the society, the Creator, and this picture. This means that I want to see how my perspective of the world and of the way I feel the world changes by changing my attitude towards the society and the Creator with an increasingly stronger connection.

I want to find the formula of how to connect more strongly, to yearn for the Creator, the mutual guarantee, to make efforts during the study to reveal the force that is between us and the whole world, to reach a certain level, and reveal a new form to us.

We have to start working on it in practice. The Zohar brings us to that by showing us states and events in which we should understand what the authors of The Zohar have revealed: People sitting in a cave in the second century BC, after the destruction of the Temple, when the land of Israel is desolate and everyone is in an awful state, and still they reach such high levels of spiritual attainment.

See the levels they write about: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, about all the states until the end of correction; it is all the revelation of hatred and the revelation of adhesion.

We must imagine the spiritual world as an empty vacuum. On one side of this empty vacuum is the person, and on its other side is the Creator, and within this emptiness that separates us, we begin to build all kinds of connections, sections, and forms that connect us with the Creator.

We fill this space with our thoughts, desires, and intentions regarding the Creator with all kinds of observations about the force of desire: Shoresh (0), Aleph (1), Bet (2), Gimel (3), Dalet (4). This means that we construct different sections within this space, forms closer to the Creator, like an internal spiral, cubes, pyramids, and all kinds of geometric forms.

All of these forms are constructed from thought, our intention to reach the Creator in all kinds of ways since in every phenomenon four phases are found, all of the restrictions. In the meantime, we are not prepared to rise above them, so they create the form of HaVaYaH.

However, after we reach the completion of correction, all of these separate forms disappear in that they are connected into an integral form that fills this space with an infinite connection with the Creator, which is no longer in various separate forms but merged together into one whole.

Question: When reading The Book of Zohar, we look at the Hebrew letters on a white background and feel their power. If The Zohar were translated into other languages, would this power be maintained?

Answer: The letters of The Book of Zohar are not sacred, meaning they don’t carry a particular spiritual energy. A person receives the spiritual energy because through these symbols (for these are not letters but symbols) he is connected with their spiritual source, with their essence.

Therefore it makes no difference in what language the book is written and in what form the person will get it. The main thing is that he will comprehend it as a carrier of spiritual information and will understand that he needs to properly attune to it.

At one time I was very interested in the subject and talked about it a lot with Rabash. I remember that I was very surprised when he said: “What difference does this make? This book could also be written in English. Only the key to the connection between my soul and the collective soul, Malchut de Ein Sof, is conveyed to us not through the English language, but through Aramaic and Hebrew.”

These two languages were in use in ancient Babylon since the days of Adam. Also they went as a pair, as direct and indirect. In fact, they are very close and are able to express spiritual characteristics because the Kabbalists conveyed all of the spiritual information to us through the arrangement of the letters and the words. The Book of Zohar works with this a lot. The entire problem is in conveying the information.

For if we were not in concealment of the Creator, we would not have any need for letters. I would feel what he feels. And there would not be any need for letters, for words, for sounds, for combinations of colors, nothing, because it would be felt directly in my heart. Pay attention to how often it is difficult to convey what we feel even in our native language. This is because all words are only an external conveyance.
