For the Sake of the Common Correction

214These are the words of our sages in clarifying the ending, “These are the words which you will say to the children of Israel.” They made the precision, “These are the words,” no more and no less. This is perplexing: How can you say that Moses would add or take away from the words of the Creator to the point that the Creator had to warn him about it? (Baal HaSulam “The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee]”).

Question: What is the meaning of the warning given to Moses: “No less and no more…”?

Answer: “No less and no more” means that the correction must continue until all the vessels are corrected.

In other words, Galgalta veEynaim (GE) have no right to exist if it is not for the sake of the common correction.

That is, GE are obligated to awaken, correct themselves, and correct others; this is the reason for their elevation before the rest. They are not permitted to be under AHP, because their role is to correct AHP due to their own purity and degree of Aviut (coarseness).

An Attitude toward the Spiritual System

224Therefore, the Creator gave him the above warning, “no less,” but offered them the true nature of the work, in all its sublimity, expressed in the words, “a kingdom of priests.”

Regarding the reward that is defined in the words “a holy nation,” he was warned, “no more” (Baal HaSulam, “The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee]”).

The words “no more” and “no less” essentially speak about one’s attitude toward the system.

What does “a kingdom of priests” mean? It means not for one’s own sake. It refers to a correction that is not intended for me; I cut myself off from personal interest. In everything I do and carry out, in everything that will happen, there is no “I.” My “I” is, so to speak, completely absent from reality. My concern is that reality should exist and not that I should exist in it. This is called “a kingdom of priests.” And we must reach “no less” than this correction.

The words “no more” imply the form of work with AHP. One may engage with the AHP only in such measure and with such Aviut, that it is always “no more” than in order to reach adhesion for the sake of bestowal.

In this way, the distinction between the work according to the principle of “no less” with vessels of bestowal, and the principle of “no more” with vessels of reception is expressed. Baal HaSulam formulates it in this way.

The Point of Support Is on the Creator

183.01Question: How can one balance the need to explain people’s guilt in what is happening on one hand, and on the other, make sure that they accept it?

Answer: As Baal HaSulam explains at the end of the Introduction to The Book of Zohar, all correction begins from within, from the innermost part of ourselves.

If you find a point of support on the Creator within yourself and from this point you influence yourself and the group, and from this point you reach out to the whole world, you will be able to explain it, be right, and self-confident. There will be no difficulty in doing so. But only if you have that point of reliance on the Creator.

Jews and the Nations of the World Have Different Tasks

448.4Is there a difference today between Jews and the nations of the world who are awakening to seek spirituality, to spiritual work?

According to what Baal HaSulam writes at the end of the Introduction to The Book of Zohar, first and foremost, we must awaken those who are customarily called “the people of Israel” in this world.

This is not according to their aspiration to adhere to the Creator, not to look for such individuals as we do in global dissemination, but simply by working within the people. This is what we are doing now. And this work, as it turns out, is the most difficult.

The point is that to those who allegedly belong to the people of Israel, those who have “Jew” written in their passport, you must come with a real accusation: that they are inherently guilty of not fulfilling their role in this world despite being Jews. Clearly no one wants to hear this.

As for the nations of the world, you approach them with a different task. You say: “You must help the Jews fulfill the correction that will be revealed to the world through them.” This is what the AHP must do in relation to Galgalta veEynaim. That is, you ask them for help, but you do not accuse them of not making corrections because the vessels of reception cannot carry it out. If they could, they would have received the Torah.

It is said that the Creator tried to give the Torah to each of the 70 nations, but they were unable to accept it. Therefore, there are no claims against them.

And when they already know what the process of correction entails and the reason for the purpose of creation, then you can demand participation and help from them, but only after that! As it is written: The nations of the world will carry Israel on their shoulders and bring them to Jerusalem. And then you will see that indeed the whole world is ready to participate in everything for the sake of correction.

And as for the fact that today we are being accused of being a part that has no purpose, this is because we, those living in Israel, claim that the inner part of the Torah, the wisdom of Kabbalah, meaning the means for attaining the purpose of creation, is unnecessary. That is why the nations of the world treat us this way.

Baal HaSulam writes about this very clearly and plainly. In this way, we ourselves determine the world’s attitude toward us and the measure of suffering or the measure of serene peace in the whole world.

The Importance of Our Attitude Toward Reality

294.2Question: We see how difficult it is for us to maintain the correct intention. So what can we even say about the whole world?

Answer: That is true. But as we study in the wisdom of Kabbalah, there is nothing but intention. The whole issue lies in realizing its importance.

Either you will attain the importance of your attitude toward reality and toward the Creator, through your own free choice or He will instill this importance in you through suffering. Choose one or the other, but you will have to do it based on importance. Importance is what you must attain. Either blows will provide it for you, or attention. That’s all. Now decide!

Today when you tell the people of Israel that another catastrophe could befall them, one even more terrible, you hear in response: “God forbid! What are you talking about?! How dare you?!”

But I only want the full importance, the full seriousness of the situation to be realized; therefore, I speak of potential disaster before it arrives. “No! Absolutely not!” they say, burying their heads in the sand.

Escape the “Pharaoh” within Oneself

749.02While studying in Abraham’s group, his like-minded companions and their descendants received both Aviut (the coarseness of desire) through the Egyptian exile, and Zakut (purity) through the suffering they endured as a result of possessing such Aviut.

It was difficult for them to remain in adhesion with the Creator while in Egypt as they perceived various external forces ruling over them, and it was hard to relate these forces back to the Creator. This is what is called “exile”, and they built the splendid cities of Pithom and Raamses for Pharaoh, and miserable cities for themselves.

Aviut increases, and as a result, it seems as though the desire to receive brings a person good things, while the desire to bestow brings harmful ones. A person is unable to connect the two and relate them to a single desire, a single force, a single thought.

This continued until, within that group, which by then had grown into a nation, different kinds of Aviut and types of soul began to appear: Moses, Aharon, Kohanim (the priests), Levites, and the people. In addition, there was also the “mixed multitude”(Erev Rav) that had intermingled with them—”a great mixture of nations”.

And yet, due to the increasing number of blows that their desire to receive had undergone, each individual began to feel that they could escape Pharaoh’s rule only with the tiny point left within them, called “Moses.” And they began trying to flee from the power of Pharaoh.

They began to sense the possibility of escaping the thoughts called “Pharaoh,” the “Egyptian nation” within them. Then they reached a state in which they could unify all these forces into one called “Moses,” and attach it to the Creator, to adhere to the very idea that “There is none else besides Him”, and “He and His Name are one.”

The Essence of the Desires “Israel”

144I need a virtuous people. If you agree to be the remedy for all the nations, I command you to “be unto Me a kingdom of priests,” which is the love of others in its final form of “Love your friend as yourself,” the axis of all the Torah and Mitzvot. And “a holy nation” is the reward in its final form of Dvekut with Him, which includes all the rewards that can even be conceived (Baal HaSulam, “The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee] ).

The phrase “And you shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” indicates that the entire nation must attain this spiritual level.

“You shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests” refers to the work above the receiving vessels (Kelim). By achieving correction in the bestowing Kelim at all levels of Aviut present within the soul, a person reaches the correction of AHP. That is, all the work of GE, the “kingdom of priests,” is needed solely to correct AHP and bring it under one’s dominion.

These are the two stages of correcting the Kli. After the shattering of the vessels, no particle remains that does not consist of four parts: GE, GE within AHP, AHP within GE, and AHP.

It is impossible to distinguish one part from another. The shattering of vessels as it applies to souls is different from bodies in this world where one can distinguish who belongs to Israel and who belongs to the nations, who was born to a Jewish mother and who was not. When it comes to souls, however, the shattering occurred within all souls. Unlike physical bodies, which are divided into Israel and the nations, there is no such division here, not even symbolically. All souls underwent the shattering.

One can speak of relative shattering within all particles, but ultimately, each individual fragment is so intertwined with all others that every part contains everything, as the shattering spreads to the most minor desire in existence, fragmenting it as much as possible.

Therefore, the work is in analyzing and correcting each desire from the purest to the coarsest, from the lightest to the heaviest. Those desires that can be separated and corrected first due to their purity are called “Israel.”

This is why the work begins with them, as it is written: “And you shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests.” These are the desires that can be separated from AHP, from the desire to receive, and assigned solely to GE – the desires to bestow. These form Galgalta veEynaim of ZON in the world of Atzilut, and they are called Israel.

Why? Because this type of desire was never meant to be shattered or corrected. These desires have no need for reception and therefore do not relate to receiving the Light of Hochma. The purpose of creation to attain equivalence of form with the Creator by receiving for the sake of bestowal is not for them.

Therefore, all GE are Kelim, the attributes of the Creator, that simply need to mix with AHP, correct themselves, and thereby establish a system through which AHP can be corrected. In and of themselves, they do not need shattering or correction.

“A Holy Nation” and “A Kingdom of Priests”

282.01The true reward of Dvekut with Him… is expressed in the words “a holy nation,” as through the Dvekut with Him we have become holy, as it is written, “You will be holy to the Lord your God, for I the Lord your God, who sanctifies you, am holy.”

And you see that the words “a kingdom of priests” express the complete form of the work on the axis of “Love your friend as yourself” (Baal HaSulam, “The Arvut [Mutual Guarantee]“).

There is correction, and there is that which is attained through it. A “kingdom of priests” and a “holy nation” are two stages. A “kingdom of priests” refers to acquiring the quality of bestowal, of Bina, of Galgalta ve Eynaim (GE).

It is said that the “priests” have no connection to the “land,” meaning that we are not yet engaged with desires, we do not correct them, but only acquire, against the background of all desires, the intention for the sake of bestowal, to bestow in order to bestow.

This is called the “kingdom of priests”; everything is only for the Creator. We acquire the same qualities that exist in Bina, that is, the qualities of the Creator.

What does “holy nation” mean? “Nation” refers to the receiving Kelim (vessels). At that stage, we already begin to use them for the sake of bestowal.

The state of “holy nation,” according to Rabbi Shimon, also implies that a person serves all the nations of the world (apart from the nations of the world that are within him), in other words, he works for the sake of bestowal with all vessels of reception. This is what it means to be “a light unto the nations.”

Without Additions and Distortions

266Question: When we address people can we distance ourselves from everything related to Mitzvot and Judaism?

Answer: We must approach the people of Israel with explanations about how they can change their fate and that of the entire world, as well as their attitude to the Creator.

We cannot add nor distort anything here. We can only reveal it  a little more or a little less), as one would with a child, to allow growth under the best conditions and in the fastest possible way.

Therefore, we should speak about what contributes to correction, but we need to tailor our words to the level of understanding of the listener. You are at a certain degree and must ascend to the next one; I must reveal the difference in degrees to you and help you see what needs to change, but no more than that! Only what pertains to progressing from your current degree to the next. Nothing extraneous should be added.

We cannot say: “Jump ten times in the morning, and you will be guaranteed success for the entire day.” It is in the realm of Segulot (miracles), which help a person psychologically, but does not change anything beyond perception.

If right now, you wish to give someone a good feeling, you may do so. It is like drugs, sedatives, or painkillers, but nothing more than that. A person who wears Tefillin daily without intention does not correct himself or his people. This will not prevent the emergence of gas chambers. That is not a correction.

Why should we explain this? We can say that it helps one stay within the framework that will help you think about the right thing, about the right intention. If it helps you, do it.

However, another danger exists; by wearing tefillin, one may calm oneself, by believing they have already done enough. Where, then, is the Creator, who should reward me? Why doesn’t He grant it? And everyone owes me! If I cannot demand it from the Creator, then at least from others; let them pay me for wearing tefillin.

This will lead to a dismissive attitude toward other nations—”I observe such practices, and who are you?” In other words, there is a risk that people will focus only on external observances, believing that is all they must do in this world, that by doing so, they truly bring benefit to their people and the entire world. But this contradicts genuine ascent.

Thus, Pharaoh said: “Moses and Aaron, what do you want from the people? Leave them alone. They work, and they work properly, they build beautiful cities, they have food and shelter, so everything is fine. The people do not suffer. When did they begin to suffer? When you demanded something beyond regular life from me. You began speaking of the Creator, insisting He must be taken in consideration. But who is the Creator that I should obey Him? Leave the people alone; let them live well.”

This is how we may fall under Pharaoh’s influence if we approach the people with explanations that external actions can change reality. True transformation is only possible through the elevation of MAN, through intention.

The framework must primarily be communal, and awaken “Love your neighbor as yourself,” “Love the Creator,” and elevate (glorify) the very idea in a way that ignites enthusiasm within society so that the masses embrace it as a trend, as something great, and thereby influence one another. Nothing more is needed.

Those who advance spiritually disregard the material realm. Even a person’s essence undergoes change; they no longer relate to this animalistic life as they once did. If you say this to someone, they may ask, “And this is Kabbalah?!” But “The Torah’s perspective is opposite to that of the masses.” You transform everything.

All the good things we do for unity, for establishing closer ties among us and within the people with regard to the Creator, the significance of merging with Him, all the tools available to us must be developed and implemented.

Against Logic

88Each time a person passes through the four exiles, one corrects the addition of the desire to receive. And today, as in all the previous stages during which the soul of Adam HaRishon went through corrections, the same system operates. The force of Abraham is revealed opposite all the forces that can be corrected, but have not yet been corrected. These are called “the people of Israel.”

It is similar to the first deliverance from Egypt. Only now the clarification will take place until the same desires that are present in the people of Israel gradually become revealed throughout the entire world. But this will happen only after the people of Israel separate themselves, meaning, after all the souls isolate those desires and thoughts within themselves that they can attach to the one, unique, and unified, for there is none else besides Him.

The desires that they are able to isolate can be passed through a correction called Arvut (mutual guarantee), and in this way, they begin to work on correcting thoughts and introducing them to the idea that only one force operates in realuty, not many.

All other thoughts, called “nations of the world,” that are unable to participate in this for now, must undergo total restriction and not be used.

Thus even though it sounds illogical, the more separate the people of Israel are from all the other nations, the better it is for them—in life, in politics, in everything.

This is against the logic that only by supporting one another can everyone live and sustain their existence. But here, when they mix with others, on the contrary, it leads to adopting their worldview, their Aviut (coarseness), and their norms; it causes delays in correction, and once again pulls the category of Israel into the categories of the nations of the world.

This can only be corrected by escaping, as from Egypt, by isolating oneself with thoughts directed solely toward closeness to the Creator and unity with Him.

So the system remains the same as before. One must be merged with the idea that there is none else besides Him, that He is one, unique, and unified, and the good who does goood to both the wicked and the righteous, that is, to good and even bad desires. Whatever they may feel—good or evil—it does not matter: He brings them goodness at every moment and in every specific state.

Therefore it is necessary to separate all the desires with which one can attain adhesion to the Creator. First, the corrections are carried out by the Kabbalists, then other desires join them (these are called “the people of Israel”), and after that the nations of the world. This happens in each person, in the nation, and in the world with all nations.
