Action in Spirituality

506.2Question: What is action in spirituality?

Answer: Action in spirituality is the revelation of a new desire in which you now want to be in connection with the Creator. Here you can give any example you wish.

Question: Let’s say I bring coffee to a friend, that is, I fill his desire. How can I add an intention for the sake of the Creator to this?

Answer: You give your intention to your friend along with the coffee. You pass it on to him in matter, in what you do for him, and that is it. By taking this coffee, he can also have the intention that he is doing this in order to preserve and increase the connection between you. Then this is realized in this way.

Work for the Sake of the Creator

938.01Question: An ox works under coercion, under the pressure of its owner. That is, the owner is effectively present in its life. How can we make the ten into such a factor that obligates us to move forward?

Answer: There are a few actions we can take for that. First, observe how the friends give each other strength, how they inspire one another, how they hold themselves on the path. In this way, we gradually share the bit of enthusiasm we each have with one another and keep moving forward.

Question: Can we make the ten, which is a visible factor in the work, also become an extension of the Creator, so that the Creator would be revealed in it like that owner?

Answer: No, the Creator does not do that and will not do that. Because then it would turn out that we are working for the Creator because we feel Him.

Question: But is the point not to work for the sake of the Creator?

Answer: The point is to work for the sake of the Creator because we want to give Him contentment.

Question: Can an ox reach a state where it works not out of coercion but because it wants to please the owner?

Answer: For that, several conditions must be fulfilled. The work must not be done under pressure from the Creator. A person must correctly build their desire toward the Creator, meaning to give contentment to the Creator, and they must be free in this. They must decide that their goal is to bring contentment to the Creator.

Unification Without Any Conditions

528.01Question: We keep praying, but we see that every day we become more and more separated. Why does it work that way?

Answer: Because you need to clarify very precisely that you have nothing else but the need to unite. When you truly feel that, your future state will appear before you: connection with everyone without any conditions. That is what you need to achieve.

A Formula for Spiritual Life: I, Group, the Creator

528.01If you do not see a strong aspiration for spirituality in your friends, if you are not impressed by the environment, not inspired to bestow, then it means that you yourself are not investing in it. Start investing yourself in your friends, and you will see how they begin to influence you in return.

It is a very simple formula! I connect with the group, and together we reach a state where we begin to influence each other.

Our circle then becomes a spiritual vessel (Kli), where all our desires for spirituality unite, all the points in the heart, and above them, an anti-egoistic screen forms: our mutual bestowal.

Now, when we are all influencing one another, we must examine whether we are doing this for the sake of bestowal to the Creator. If yes, then we have a screen and reflected light. And immediately, the upper force is revealed to us in accordance with the similarity of our qualities.

I → Group → Soul—that is the entire formula!

How Can We Overcome Obstacles?

527Question: Is it correct that an obstacle that arises is overcome through the formation of a new form as a result of greater unity in the ten?

Answer: Yes, continue and you will see how to express this more clearly.

Question: The ego resists accepting a new form. How can we break it more effectively?

Answer: Do not pay attention to the ego. Try to be together, to feel one another, and from that shared feeling, turn to the Creator.

Know Your Limits

532Making any movement only as a result of love for others, without any spark of reflected light or hope for any kind of reward in return is completely impossible by nature (Baal HaSulam, “Matan Torah [The Giving of the Torah]“).

And this still needs to be revealed. The words are correct and wonderful, but a person must perform many actions directed toward bestowal, spend many hours studying, and make many efforts to unite with others to come to the realization that he does not have the slightest chance to perform an act of bestowal.

Of course one can immediately admit that he is an egoist who does not care about anyone, who does not value anyone, and to whom everything is indifferent. But this does not testify to the revelation of the vessel, the Kli; anyone can say this about themselves. We agree with this without unnecessary words.

The problem is to realize the evil within oneself, to understand that even if one desires, he is incapable of performing any act of bestowal. This means to know one’s nature, to know one’s limits. With all one’s might using all possibilities and means, one pressures himself to reveal bestowal to his fellow, and discovers purest egoistic reception. He does not find even one percent of bestowal.

And the more I try to do good for someone, the more my original intention is revealed to me after all these enormous efforts. Previously, I did not know about it and could not detect it, but now it turns out that all my actions pursued personal gain.

This is a very deep study. I receive these lessons only after I make efforts. With a pure soul, I set to work, wishing to benefit others as much as possible, and unite with them, completely forgetting about myself. In my eyes, my friends are so great that I simply get lost, disappear among them. And in the end, after each action, the opposite picture is revealed to me: I did everything for my own benefit.

This truth manifests as a reward, as a prize for my efforts to perform pure, maximum bestowal from the heart.

And then, thanks to my efforts, I come to the final result, to what is said: “I created the evil inclination.”

The entrance opens before me, the understanding of these words. I begin to realize what the Creator has created. Until then, they were just words.

Then, as usual, I go through four stages of development and come to the necessity of the Torah as a spice, that is, a method of correction. I begin to understand what the Torah is, what the spice is, what it adds to the evil inclination, in what form it should be used, and how it works. Even if I am only at the beginning of the path and still have no experience, the means called “Torah-spice” is already slightly revealed to me.

And also, the light that returns to the source (the reforming light), which is embedded in it is revealed to me. We are talking about different concepts; the Torah and the light are not the same.

That is why receiving the Torah is a very complex matter. Moreover, the question arises: who gives it to me? After all, this giving is necessary, and it is precisely thanks to it that we come to receive the Torah.

Faith Is Higher Than Knowledge

623Question: How can we work correctly in faith above reason when you don’t just accept the supposed shortcomings of the friends, but so that it a work of correction that leads to a natural love for the friends?

Answer: Continue working the way you say, and you will come to it. You cannot jump to the last step right away.

Question: We acquire faith above reason when we have a screen. Right now, we are kind of playing at and trying to enter this state, and this brings us closer to the goal. But how can we play at faith above reason?

Answer: Keep playing as much as you can. Play the way you used to play with dolls, and then you will see how it formats you.

The Power of Greatness

032.01Question: When we come to self-sacrifice and devotion to the group, we need strength. It is a very big task. If I lack strength in the group, I feel the greatness of the teacher, and I draw strength from there. To what extent can I use this strength in the group to annul myself before the friends?

Answer: Take as much as you can. The actual measure does not matter. Later we will begin to measure: Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Haya, and Yechida, i.e., with what force we need help from above to exist above the light that is revealed from below.

Question: How are devotion and making a covenant with the Creator connected? What is the covenant with the Creator that strengthens devotion?

Answer: Devotion is necessary in any relationship of a person with the Creator, even with friends, between people. I think you will understand this quickly yourself.

Verification of the Soul Devotion

938.03Question: How can I to what extent I am in soul devotion, for example, per gram or per kilogram?

Answer: First you check this in relation to the friends and then in relation to the Creator.

Words explain very little about these states  because verifying ourselves in relation to the friends and the Creator are, in essence, such high states that we cannot control them in any way.

We can launch them through the Creator, because if I want to do this, then I ask the Creator for it, and He does it. But we ourselves cannot do it in any way.

Question: Does each person have their own measure of effort or is it the same?

Answer: Each person has their own. We cannot compare them.

Questions about Spiritual Work—241

528.01Question: How can I feel the friends’ lacks if we do not speak about them directly but only abstractly, not from feelings but from the intellect?

Answer: That does not matter. What matters is what you think, dream about, and decide. You wish to act practically based on your decision.

Question: If I feel certain needs, can I say that the friends lack the same and then pray for the Creator to give it to them as well?

Answer: No, you should not measure the friends by yourself.

Question: How do we check what level of bestowal we have reached in the ten?

Answer: We must reach a level of bestowal that resembles the Creator. But that, of course, is a very high level. And before that it is tens or even hundreds of times less.
