Question: On one hand, a friend is like a teacher to me; I am small compared to him. On the other hand, I seem to be his teacher. How do these degrees alternate?

Answer: They work simultaneously, like a mother with a baby. On one hand, the child is most important to her, and on the other, she takes care of him all the time and he seems to be in her power. It follows that he commands her, and she, taking care of him, as if commands him.

If my future depends on a friend, then he is the most important to me. If everything that I can do in spirituality is only possible through him, then it means I am obliged not to receive from him, but to give to him. Our interaction must be absolutely open and complete. Then we come to a third state, when the two open relationships with each other become a single one.

Question: It turns out that we become equal?

Answer: We are so equivalent in regard to our goal that our “we” disappears, and a common field appears, a common life, a common space in which the Creator is revealed.

Question: Where is faith above reason here?

Answer: Faith above reason appears only when the Light comes down and gives us strength and we begin to feel the need to bestow. This need to isolate from oneself, to bestow, to radiate is the realization of faith above reason.

Rabash, “Concerning the Importance of Friends”: But in the essay, “A Speech for the Completion of The Zohar,” it is written, “The measure of the greatness comes under two conditions:

1. to always listen and receive the appreciation of society, to the extent of their greatness; the environment should be great, as it is written, ‘In the multitude of people is the king’s glory.’”
2. The bigger the environment is in my eyes, the greater confidence, strength and the ability to act quantitatively and qualitatively it gives me.

What is more important here: quality or quantity? Of course, in our state, quality is much more important. We are always in small quantities, but since we are in the last generation, we must take care that there are both quality and quantity. Moreover, both are generally achievable.

To accept the first condition, each student must feel that he is the smallest among all the friends…

And for the second condition, each student must extol each friend’s merit as though he were the greatest in the generation.

Question: Rabash gives two steps here that we are always confused about. If I am lower than others, aren’t they automatically higher than me?

Answer: No! It depends on how you became lower than others. You either found out that they are really huge that raises them in your eyes, and therefore, you became lower, or you lower yourself.

It depends on what you are working on to be below them: on their elevation or on your own humiliation. There are two possibilities, two types of work.

Question: How should I treat a friend who annoys me because he is constantly late for class and sleeps during the lesson? How can I justify him? Can you give any advice?

Answer: Rabash had a tolerant attitude toward such a situation. I myself many times fell asleep in the lessons because our states do not actually depend on how tired we are. Therefore, we must try to justify a friend.

Question: There is a state when a person should see himself above the friends. But not everyone can do this. Does it mean that he should make efforts toward this?

Answer: Of course. How can I help the friends if I am lower than them? I have to take care of them, organize everything for them, do everything I can. For this, I must feel like a father in the family.

Question: You always say that I should feel like a father, these are my children, and on the other hand, I should feel as if I am inside my mother, that the group is my mother. How can these two states exist at the same time, in the same person?

Answer: They cannot be together at the same moment because they come from completely different internal states. However, they can be absolutely adjacent. There is no problem that one state is instantly replaced by another. We work in a pulsating mode.

Rabash, “Concerning the Importance of Friends”: Concerning the importance of the friends in the society and how to appreciate them, meaning with which kind of importance everyone should regard his friend. Common sense dictates that if one regards one’s friend as being at a lower degree than one’s own, he will want to teach him how to behave more virtuously than the qualities he has. Hence, he cannot be his friend; he can take the friend as a student, but not as a friend.

And if one sees one’s friend as being at a higher degree than his own, and sees that he can acquire good qualities from him, then he can be his Rav, but not his friend.

This means that precisely when one sees one’s friend as being at an equal degree to one’s own, one can accept the other as a friend and bond with him. This is so because “a friend” means that both parties are in the same state. This is what common sense dictates. In other words, they have the same views and thus decide to bond. Then, both of them act towards the goal that they both wish to achieve.

It is like two like-minded friends who are doing business together to achieve a profit. In that situation, they feel that they have equal powers. But should one of them feel that he is more competent than the other, he will not want to accept him as an equal partner. Instead, they would create a proportional partnership according to the strength and qualities that one has above the other. In that state, the partnership is a thirty-three or twenty-five percent partnership, and it cannot be said that they are equal in the business.

It is impossible to feel equal to your friend because you are constantly in states of ascents and descents. There are no equal states in nature, yet there should be a desire for equality.

By wanting to be equal to his friend, a person forces efforts to rise higher, descend lower, and thus, gradually achieve the state where they unite in a complete mutual connection, fulfillment, reception, in a state of mutual communication. The sum of both states leads to the right connection.

We are talking about the communication of different qualities that must be both fulfilling and receiving from each other, like a system in a connected state.

Such communication between all parts of the broken soul naturally requires that one be higher in something than the other and in something lower than the other, and so on. We can never be equal because we are all different! Therefore, there can be no comparison between us except in our efforts to achieve the common goal.

If I connect with the others in order to achieve adhesion with the Creator, which is our common goal, then we find ourselves to be absolutely equal inside Him. Here, no one is big or small, it is irrelevant what qualities each of us happens to be in. The main thing is that we are all driven toward the same goal. Thus, in this goal, we achieve the middle line.

That is why it does not exist. Only when we reach the Creator can we obtain the middle line in Him and the equal connection between us.

Question: Suppose a person is trying to see himself lower than the friends and holds this goal in front of him. At the same time, he must make an inner effort. Where does he get the strength from if he is at a point where he does not yet see them above himself?

Answer: I must explain to myself that the aspiration and the achievement of the goal do not depend on me. My task is to receive the aspirations of the group and fulfill them.

It seems to a person that he has a goal, a direction, that he knows everything, can do anything, and that everything depends on him, or at most on the Creator. Yet in fact, the orientation toward the goal is provided by the group, and the goal itself is in the center of the group, in the correct connection between everyone.

Therefore, I completely depend on the group. When I first choose the goal, I determine that by my efforts I am leading the whole group to it, adding everything from myself that they need to achieve it.

I make efforts to absorb their aspiration and excitement toward the goal. I try to get closer to them by being above, below, and equal to them, because it is in them that I will reach adhesion with the Creator. All my work is concentrated inside the group.

Question: If the goal is clear to me and it is clear that you need to annul yourself before your friends, where will you get the strength to see them higher than yourself?

Answer: I understand that it does not come easily, sometimes it takes years. But constant efforts draw the upper Light, gradually giving a person the awareness that it is this work that is important and necessary.

Question: So I must close my eyes to the behavior of my friends who seem unfocused on the goal and just try to see what drives them?

Answer: In spiritual work, we should treat each other as if the vision of the Creator is manifested to us in this way. That is, I see not a friend, but what the Creator shows me in him.

Of course, his behavior can be interpreted in a number of ways, but I must always treat him with love. If we have a common goal, if we are tied to each other in the Creator, then there can be no other relationship.

Question: When I see my friend as lower than myself, this is my normal egoistic state. Does all my work happen when I feel smaller than my friend?

Answer: No, because it is a question of work that it is necessary to come to through internal efforts. There are people who constantly feel below others. There are people who always feel superior. There are those who do not pay attention to others at all, do not even notice them.

All the work is to first grasp onto the goal, the Creator, and from this determine our present state. The fact that we are trying to grab hold of the goal together makes us equal.

Question: How should we look at the friends: Are they higher than me, or are we all equal?

Answer: I do not care if they are higher or lower; I am prepared to work in all the stages! I have to relate to them differently.

After all, in the states of reception and bestowal in which we must achieve our unity, there is no higher and lower. There, each one is both higher and lower than the others since each of us has his own special qualities. I must give them to the whole large Kli (vessel), to the entire soul, and receive from it what I need for correct functioning.

Therefore, only when we care about the general state of the soul that is called either Adam or the Creator (depending on what we are talking about—either about the structure of the system itself or about its filling), can we talk about correct work. Only the connection with the Creator, or aspiration for this connection, gives us the basis for the correct work.

Question: Do I need to pay attention to the fact that friends’ aspiration to the Creator is stronger than mine?

Answer: If a person feels this way, it  drives him forward.

It is written: “The end of an act is in the preliminary thought”; that is, it determines the beginning of the action. Therefore, the main thing for me is to determine the Creator: what it is, what I am looking for, where I can go, what I aspire to, what state I see as my goal, and based on this, I will already be looking at what I need for achieving this goal.

Question: When I hold a goal before me, in what am I lower than my friends in the spiritual work in the group?

Answer: If any great Kabbalist finds himself in the smallest group, he will still be in something lower than them because he needs to have a connection with them so that they would influence him with their desires, hopes, and thoughts. He must receive from them their desires and their aspirations.

Without this, he will not be able to actively participate in the group, even if he is the greatest. He needs to be lower than them, to serve them in order to receive their aspiration to the Creator. Then, he will be able to work with these aspirations.

This is because the path of truth requires constant strengthening, since it is against the view of the world. The view of the world is knowing and receiving, whereas the view of Torah is faith and bestowal.

Question: Will people leave the group of the last generation?

Answer: They will leave because in the group of the last generation one needs to make great efforts to constantly make progress.

The fact is that when you are in psychological groups or groups engaged in spiritual practices, then the movement takes place on the basis of knowledge or development of the method.

However, in the Kabbalistic group, the egoistic engine constantly operates and it kind of pushes you out of the group. If you do not constantly work against it, then you do not rise above it and cannot advance. Therefore, in the Kabbalistic group, there is always a need for additional efforts, and one cannot stand still. This is what forces a person to advance.

Question: Why is it that when a person is taken out of the group, he seems to go against the group and/or the method?

Answer: He must justify himself egoistically, so he turns against the group he was in. He wants to show that he is right and they are wrong. He thus tries to find flaws in the group to prove his point.

When a person comes to the group, the point in the heart, which is awakened from above, speaks within him. He suddenly feels that his soul is here.

Then, to stay in place, he needs to make an effort. This is the place of spiritual work. He holds on somehow, for some time, but if he does not make serious efforts, he is drawn away from the path.

Question: How can one make an effort to clear out all the opinions that a person absorbed during his life?

Answer: Everything is written in the Kabbalistic sources. They are written for this purpose.

Question: Should there be laws against empty talk or gossip in a group advancing toward the goal?

Answer: All the commandments only speak about the internal connection between us. In our world, however, they are described in the form of mechanical actions: a certain way of eating, washing hands, and other corporeal actions that a person performs with his body when working in the field or with animals, etc. In reality, all these desires either facilitate or impede our connection. We have to understand and realize them correctly.

Therefore, the revelation of our various qualities along the path to our unity, some of which are for and others against the connection, is necessary in order to align ourselves correctly. This way, we observe all the positive and negative commandments, understanding what to use for connection and what to abstain from, and we reach the goal.

This is the observance of the commandments, which is carried out with the help of the upper force called the Light, or the Torah.
