Our Task

942Question: Do we lack the development of Aviut to advance?

Answer: We do not worry about Aviut, whether it is revealed or not. We must take care of the connection between us in the conditions given. We receive the level of Aviut with all the heaviness, confusion, and hindrances corresponding to the level, according to its nature. That is how it should be, period! We have nothing to be indignant about and no need to find out why this is the case and not otherwise.

We do not understand this. We have no comprehension in the revelation of the common vessel, even in its smallest part! So what can we say about this?!

We must accept this above knowledge. Of course, we can explore this, but all these scrutinies may divert us from the action itself.

There is only one direction. The levels of the Aviut will be revealed, obstacles will be revealed, all kinds of conditions, internal and external, will be revealed, and we must accept them because each revelation is the revelation of another stage and another, where we will have to make connections, and create a common Kli.

Today, according to what is being revealed, we must unite between those who are ready, openly, by mutual agreement. In the rest of the world that is not ready and does not understand what is going on we must spread this knowledge in every possible way so that it rises upward. That is our task.

According to the Magnitude of Desire

243.07Question: Is Arvut (mutual guarantee) the same for Kelim (vessels) with small and large Aviut?

Answer: The law of Arvut does not depend on Aviut. Naturally, it manifests in different forms in accordance with the level of Aviut and the nature of the Kli one has acquired.

What is the difference between degrees of Aviut in relation to Arvut? For example, Abraham and his household fulfilled the law of Arvut, because the Kelim must be connected with each other to a certain degree in order to reveal the upper light that will elevate them to some level of spiritual life.

But they hardly needed to exert effort because their souls were so pure that they understood how to reach adhesion, and through connection among themselves, to reach equivalence of form with the light.

To the extent that each person devotes himself to the group, he merits similarity to the light. And the entire group reaches such a powerful connection in intention for the sake of bestowal that the light begins to shine within it.

However, when the desire within the group becomes more coarse, then naturally the law of Arvut must be implemented in a different form according to the increased Aviut. This creates a problem: a methodology is needed; special lights are needed for the correction of the Kelim. This is what we call the Torah.

Therefore the reason for the need to attain Arvut in the first place becomes less obvious; it disappears. The increased Aviut conceals the Creator, the light withdraws, and it becomes unclear why this is necessary at all.

The desire to receive begins to demand all kinds of things for itself, and the person no longer clearly sees that the world operates according to the law of love for one’s neighbor. One’s perception becomes clouded.

This continues until people no longer believe that this reality operates according to the law of love for others.

They begin to relate to one another based on their own desire to receive, which grows, increasingly confuses a person, and causes him to descend further and further.

This is exactly what happens with us. We find ourselves in inspiration and then in descent. At one moment we feel capable of giving ourselves over and remaining in that state, and then suddenly we begin to make more animalistic, more earthly calculations.

It seems to us that this is the real world, that this is how we must live, that these are the laws we must follow. Everything aligns with the current state you are in, whether your desire to receive has increased or whether it has quieted down within you.

All of Reality Was Created By a Single Thought of the Creator

712.03All of reality was created by a single thought of the Creator. This one thought begins and concludes the entire process that creation must undergo. It is itself both the entire reality and the final reward. Everything except the desire of the Creator is contained within this thought that realizes His intention. It emanates from the Creator and within it all the created beings are manifested.

The expected reward is also embedded in it because all actions and all their outcomes are directed toward reaching the end of correction.

It is said that a person must place the Creator as a King over himself. That is, it is not enough that the Creator has prepared everything for us, the creation and its development, all that exists and will be. What matters is that the human being must also engage in the work to study the actions of the Creator and to elevate Him to the upper reality: to place Him as a King over himself.

A person strives to study creation on all its levels and through this gain the ability to connect everything to the upper force. Then he sees that this upper force is the Creator.

If one makes the correct choice and walks the correct path in the world in which he was created, he gradually reveals the force that governs this world and feels the necessity to bow before it.

As a person draws closer to nature, he discovers that within it, there is one upper force encompassing everything, including the person himself. It is this force we must reveal through our connection with one another.

In striving to come closer and unite ever more deeply with the friends, we gradually come to see that all of this has been prepared for us by the Creator and that it leads to the revelation of the Creator at the center of our unity. There is no other way.

The quality of such work elevates a person above everything else because through it, he takes steps toward resembling the Creator. When a person attains even the slightest similarity with the Creator, through his adhesion to the upper, he begins to rise toward Him. The work of connection brings us closer to the upper force.

In the Direction of Mutual Guarantee

938.04The main condition for the common soul to be corrected and fit to receive the light is the mutual guarantee between its parts.

We must attain the very state originally created by the Creator by our own efforts. What are those efforts? They are efforts in Arvut.

As we ascend from below upward through the degrees of adhesion, we do so, of course, unconsciously, without strength, without understanding, without prior agreement to what lies ahead. All that is asked of us is to express, even in the simplest and most naïve way, a desire for something we do not yet truly know.

We simply walk, and through the surrounding light (Ohr Makif), we awaken the allure of holiness from the spiritual world upon ourselves. We begin to feel that this is something desirable, and then we act in the direction of Arvut.

What does this mean? It means we move in the direction of the correction of the Kli (vessel). That is, the Creator’s light is present and fills us; our task is only to reveal it. The Creator is already within us. This state is unchanging, but we can uncover it only through a certain action called the Arvut.

Thinking about Arvut

624.01Question: You spoke about those who have studied Kabbalah for many years and still don’t hear that the main thing is Arvut (mutual guarantee). How can I know whether I hear it or not?

Answer: Very simply! It is clear by how much you care about connection with others so that the Creator, the upper light, will be revealed among you, about how much this concern burns within you.

Moreover, it is not overshadowed by visions of what you might supposedly achieve. You don’t need to achieve anything except connection. Not even the Creator needs to be attained. It is written: “If only they would abandon Me but keep My Torah.” What does “My Torah” mean? That is Arvut.

All the laws of the Torah are here, within.

And if this is how you relate to your existence in the world and in the group; that is normal. That is the test.
Question: Do those who don’t hear affect those who do?

Answer: They affect those who hear only if they are capable of reaching Arvut but are lazy. If people are not yet able to hear, but join in, they do not interfere. This includes beginners or those who are currently in various confusions, in a descent, and therefore do not hear; well, what can you do. That is not a problem. The only problem is with those who truly can but are lazy.

So what should we do about this? Should we perhaps establish some sort of order, a system, inspections, and so on? No, we should relate to everyone as Baal HaSulam says: One who is drilling a hole in the boat should be thrown out. But in principle, we should think more about correction.

If our direction, like a team, is the necessity of Arvut, then there can be no one extra inside: either a person joins, or it’s clear that he is a stranger. And the greater the unity among those who agree, the greater the separation between them and those who are not in it.

But even those who are not inside should not be disregarded. We must understand that a person can be in all kinds of states.

The Signs of the Messiah

294.2In our time, the Jewish people are obligated to fulfill the condition of attaining Arvut (mutual guarantee). If they neglect this duty, a compelling force will be applied to them, which forces them to fulfill it through suffering.

The whole world is waiting for this, and because it waits, suffering and misfortunes are revealed on a global scale that causes the world to suffer and through its pain begin to understand the reason behind it all. Ultimately, suffering comes in order to indicate where the solution lies.

In the preface to “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Baal HaSulam writes that the Creator guides a person to the good fate by giving him, within a life full of suffering, a spark that shines faintly from afar through all the darkness.

The same occurs both for us and for the nations of the world. All current relations between us and the nations exist solely to compel us to engage in the practical aspect so that we may attain Arvut. The compelling force must reveal the necessity of this very task to us.

The nations of the world too gradually begin to understand through the suffering they endure where the true solution lies. We can see how they are slowly discovering that the root of the problem lies in Israel, which is seen as the worst part that causes harm to the whole world.

This is already a deeply advanced form of revelation. These are truly the signs of the Messiah.

The Inability to Fulfill One Another

629.4Question: Must Arvut (mutual guarantee) be realized in action or is it enough for society simply to agree to it?

Answer: In the article “The Giving of the Torah,” Baal HaSulam explains that you are not capable of bestowing to another. No matter whom you choose from all of humanity, even the smallest, most modest in their desires, you will not be able to fulfill them.

It is clear that you only “burn yourself out” in an attempt that is doomed to fail from the start. If you intend to fulfill people’s needs through action so that they may be happy, it will not yield good results.

We must understand that happiness is not a matter of money, politics, or psychology. Happiness arises from the feeling of adhesion with the upper. That is what fills all the lacks within the desires a person feels.

Our concern should be to lead humanity to the understanding that fulfillment comes only through the light, not through various actions in this world.

A person will never be satisfied, no matter what it is. You will never be able to satiate them. What we must care about is that people understand what the true means is and come to acquire it.

Descendants of the Kabbalists

961.2The people of Israel originate from the “fathers,” from the Kabbalists. Therefore, their entire structure differs from the structure of other nations. Even the kings and ministers who ruled at the time were not aristocrats like it is customary among other nations.

The entire nation, which descended from a group of Kabbalists, originally had a clear law stating that all are equal and no one has any privileges over another that they do not deserve, but they receive by inheritance from the father or mother, as is customary among the peoples of the world.

There has never been slavery or oppression of one part over another among the people of Israel. From the time of Abraham onward, there has never been a case when every boy was not taught to attain spirituality, that they could not read, and did not know what they were living for. This was hundreds of years before the destruction of the Temple.

Thus in the foundation of the people the conditions, laws, and tasks for the end of correction were initially laid. But when they were affected by the force of destruction, they adopted the morals of their neighbors, and as a result everything fell apart.

Although they became mixed with all the nations of the world, this still did not lead to any change in the people themselves, to the introduction of laws that someone is above or below others, to changes in the area of education, social functions, and so on.

The fact is that the Kabbalists stood at the foundation of the people, and thereby the basis for correction was laid. This group truly can lead to the correction of all the rest of humanity. It is not that it causes these corrections, but it awakens in the nations of the world their correct form.

Abraham—The First Jew

740.03Question: Kabbalah is a system of correction. What does the correction of Abraham’s low Aviut (coarseness) have to do with us?

Answer: The system of correcting the desire to receive was not brought to us by Abraham but by Moses.

Abraham brought us only the connection of man with the Creator. That is why he is called the first Jew (Yehudi), because he was the first to achieve unity (Yehud) with the Creator, from concealment to revelation.

Before him there were people who were in sensation without concealment. We call them the “generations of sinners:” from Adam to Noah and from Noah to Abraham. Abraham is their consequence.

But in those days, no Aviut was manifested that would give a person concealment and craving to start searching from within themselves. Abraham was the first.
