One Bestowal For All

Dr. Michael LaitmanMan’s essence is the desire to be filled. His mind develops alongside this desire to help him attain that which is desired. Man’s big desires develop a big mind, while his small desires limit the mind. The mind is secondary; the desire is primary. This is why the desire commands us, whether we like it or not.

The aspiration to experience the world on a greater scale than it really is, in its full matrix, depends on the development of our desire. This is why we study the wisdom of Kabbalah. It helps develop the desire to the point where it is possible to perceive the upper world, the higher matter, the higher qualities.

Since our world only exists in the desire to receive, it is confined and limited. How much information, sensation, feeling, color, sound, and so forth can I absorb? It turns out it is not much at all since I immediately become filled and tired. I even try to limit myself from extreme reception and suffice myself with small pleasures.

Kabbalists tell us that there is an enormous world beyond the limits of our sensations, which exists outside of us, outside our egoistic sensations. We can only experience it according to the law of similarity of properties. If we acquire the same qualities like in that world, we will see, hear, and feel it.

How do we acquire the qualities of this external world that is a billion times greater than ours? First of all, this world goes beyond the limits of our physical body. This is why it is eternal, perfect, and infinite. It is not even like our finite, imperfect, and egoistic universe.

The world that exists in the quality of bestowal, and which we absolutely do not perceive, basically exists around us. In order to perceive it, we need to begin coming closer to the quality of bestowal, the foundation of the upper world. This is the purpose of the exercises and advice of the Kabbalists who have already completed this path.

These are group exercises because one gradually develops the quality of bestowal only in a group of like-minded people. I begin to feel how deeply I exist in egoism and my inability to come out of it. Then, under the influence of the group, I get the feeling that I simply am in a prison I can’t escape. Then I understand that only the group, only the upper force, can help me.

In this way, I reach the need for mutual guarantee. I am in need of the support of my friends who simply force me to rise above myself, and on my behalf, I also try to help them with this. We reach mutual guarantee when we mutually help each other to rise above ourselves and connect into the common quality of bestowal.

Then we will perceive the upper world in this new, common quality, a sensor, a sense. We can only perceive it if we create something mutual with our desires and aspirations because the quality of bestowal cannot be individual. It is necessarily connected with all the rest, and this is why it is one for all. This quality in which we will perceive our higher existence is called the “soul.”

This is why the convention in the Arava desert was directed toward preparing oneself for a preliminary sensation of the quality of bestowal that is being conceived in us. We must bring this to all the participants of the big upcoming convention where it will be necessary for everyone to strengthen it together. We must develop this embryo to the point where we will perceive the presence of the upper world, the presence of the Creator.

From A Point To The First Spiritual Level

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: After the convention, I feel enormous separation and repulsion, which I never felt before. Can this be a result of my working incorrectly at the convention?

Answer: After the kind of unity and ascent that we felt at the convention, if a person feels separation, repulsion, and confusion, these are correct states. Resistance from our egoistic nature has to mount, and to counterbalance it, we have to fight these states.

If we maintain ourselves in that same point of unity that we attained, then by virtue of egoism which becomes attached to it, this point will start to grow. We received an example, and we must live in that same inspiration. We already contain a state called “unity,” which we attained at the convention in the clearest, most vivid form. I must preserve this state, trying to remain in it at every moment of my life.

True, now I will immediately receive all kinds of disturbances, but they are all intended for me to strengthen myself more in the same point that I attained at the convention. Then this point will grow based on all of these disturbances. They will enter it and will support it with the help of my efforts. And then this point will expand. That is how I grow this point to the size of the first spiritual level. I don’t have any other opportunity to grow in spirituality, but only by virtue of the disturbances, “help against me.”

Don’t Hide Behind A Computer Screen

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: After the unity we felt at the convention, should a person studying with us virtually or online go look for a physical group to be in?

Answer: Going to look for a group today is not the same it was 200 years ago, when a person would leave his home with a staff in hand and go off to search. Today a person enters the Internet and is already together with us, in the common group. He already attended the convention and understands what this is.

Should he look for a physical group? I don’t know if he has that opportunity. The closest group might be several hours away from him.

Yet one should try to stay connected to people nevertheless. Sometimes you have to feel how much you don’t want that connection. Maybe by connecting to others virtually, you idealize the situation, thinking that you are already united with them completely, while in fact you are hiding behind the computer screen. So come out from behind the monitor and connect with them in reality. Go and see whether this is possible….

Obviously, now, after our unification at the convention, we are starting to feel confusion, repulsion, and separation—states that are opposite to unity, one against the other. That’s because in order to grow, we must always advance on two legs. Therefore, don’t be surprised that we are suddenly finding ourselves in opposite states. We must finally get used to the fact that these states have to alternate and follow one another.

Therefore, if a person does not have a close connection with a certain group, then he doesn’t go through these states dramatically, quickly, and intensely. All of this gets drawn out and “smudged” for him. He must nevertheless have some sort of physical connection with others. After all, we are in this world and cannot annul it completely. We cannot turn this world into a virtual world. We are here in our bodies and all sorts of connections between us because this is important. We accelerate time by having a physical connection between us.

To The Creator Through The Group
To Be Born And Grow Up In The Group

Wrapped In A Cloud Of Unity

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does it mean to direct all our thoughts and desires toward the Creator? How can we incorporate the Creator into this entire process?

Answer: First, we have to do everything in our power to connect in order to feel unity. We should constantly feel this unity above all the disturbances we experience in our thoughts and desires. No matter what I do, I do it feeling that the group is inside me. If you can, try to imagine that the Creator also fills us and is inside us.

I warn you: We will not be able to hold on to the state of unity felt during the convention much longer. More serious obstacles will arise, and I won’t be able to connect to the friends and will surely forget about the Creator.

These problems are given to me on purpose so that I will try to attach myself to the group and ask the Creator for help, demand that He carries out our connection. The Creator is the attribute of bestowal and love, and I want the attribute of bestowal to dwell among us.

If we don’t see ourselves as corporeal bodies, but rather close our eyes and feel the field in which we share a common sensation, then the one who stabilizes, fills, and sustains this feeling, the main force that arranges, creates, and maintains all this is called “the Creator.”

The force of bestowal existing in creation is the Creator, His front side, and the force of reception in creation is His back side. And I am the black point of “existence from absence (Yesh Mi Ain)” situated in this force field of bestowal and reception.

Keep What Was Attained

Dr. Michael LaitmanStarting now we must strengthen that which we have attained; we must grow the unity that was born between us at the convention. This point must multiply. Even though it appears to be overwhelming and never-ending in the beginning of the journey, in reality it is not so. The spiritual stages are much shorter that the first, preliminary stage.

When we rise from Malchut and merge with Zeir Anpin, the spiritual power intensifies sixty times, and when Zeir Anpin rises to YESHSUT, it creates six hundred times stronger intensity. Every new degree includes the ten Sefirot and adds a position, increases our might by a power of ten: six thousand, sixty thousand, and so on.

Moreover, we must not forget that the entire world needs the spiritual ascent. We must convey the method of correction to humanity, the method of universal unity. We must correct the crisis in this world, which will be expanding, seizing everyone without exception, to the very last village, the very last corner of the world. It will manifest in every family and in every person. This multi-crisis will touch on every area of human activity.

And this is why all of us will have to work in the role of mentors, disseminators of the method. The crisis will not stop until the entire world enters a mutual interconnection, until everyone becomes like we are now. We assume that this is impossible, but in reality, it will be much easier for the world to do than for us. Desires and ideas are easier to spread in large masses, down the threads of the inner interconnection. The collective soul did not go anywhere: We are separated only in our sensations. People will understand us very quickly, come closer, and connect with us.

The main thing right now is to strengthen the feeling of unity which appeared at the convention. These are the actual spiritual gates. There are new people among us who have simply enjoyed being with their friends. There are people who feel something greater, people who already manifest this feeling of a spiritual revelation, the first attainment and not just a union. And there are some who have advanced even further. We represent a full spectrum, and I am very happy about these variations in the collective vessel. This means that it lives and develops.

Now you just need to strengthen it, and you’ll see that it will be relatively easy. We need to protect our unity at least a little bit, despite the disturbances. We will return back home, and most important is to keep what was attained.

I stay close to my friends despite the distance and watch the world from aside. I sit on a plane or a train, and the entire world is outside my window. Everything flows by me on the outside, but what matters to me is what is happening on the inside. This inner flame is more important than anything else, more important than life. I put all things in their places, distribute them according to the scale of values, and then the key is to remain on top, at the tip of the pyramid, in the feeling I have attained. I am even prepared to die with it because eternity is concealed in it.

The world Needs Us
We Demand Light!

Give Love

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabash, Letter 8: And as soon as I acquire the quality of bestowal, sparks of love promptly begin to shine within me.

At first we acquire the power of bestowal, the Light of Hassadim (Mercy), and then the Light of love, the Light of Hochma (Wisdom), dresses in it.

The heart begins to long to unite with my friends, and it seems to me that my eyes see my friends, my ears hear their voices, my mouth speaks to them, the hands embrace, the feet dance in a circle in love and joy together with them, and I transcend my corporeal boundaries. I forget the vast distance between my friends and me, and the outstretched land for many miles will not stand between us.

It is as though my friends are standing right within my heart and see all that is happening there, and I become ashamed of my petty acts against my friends. Then, I simply exit the corporeal vessels and it seems to me that there is no reality in the world except my friends and me. After that, even the “I” is cancelled and is immersed, mingled in my friends, until I stand and declare that there is no reality in the world—only the friends.

Rabash writes this from spiritual attainment. This is exactly how we attain spiritual reality: There is nothing in it from our current perception—only our friends. Besides, this does not refer to the faces that stand before my eyes today, but a special inner force found in my friends, a unique spark that every one of them has received from Above. These sparks are the friends of my spark. We unite them into a group.

Rabash, Letter 40: And when one begins to feel the love of his friend, joy and pleasure immediately begin to awaken in him… His friend’s love for him is a new thing for him…

He suddenly reveals it, but before he did not know, did not believe in it, was not ready to accept it. Our problem is not as much to love our friend, but to feel the love from him. We also resist this love because it imposes certain obligations on us. However, when I discover a new feeling a friend has for me, I can no longer ignore it. This way my friend begins to “buy” me, attach me to him.

…he always knew that he was the only one who cared for his own well being. But the minute he discovers that his friend cares for him, it evokes within him immeasurable joy, and he can no longer care for himself…

He can no longer continue caring for his needs as before. It is written in the article “The Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)” that when I am sure, when I feel that others love me, I stop being concerned with myself, unreservedly.

This is not just an addition of strength, which allows me to make a new calculation and stop thinking about myself. The moment I feel how much my friends love me, I fully reject self-love. I seem to forget about myself; I stop perceiving myself. Love that comes from the outside, from my friends, takes over me, and carries me out of my own limitations—to them.

… and he can no longer care for himself since man can toil only where he feels pleasure. And since he is beginning to feel pleasure in caring for his friend, he naturally cannot think of himself.

It is inevitable: If I want to help my friend to not care for himself, I must show him that I take care of all his needs. In this case he rejects himself “by definition.” This way I take him out of his egoism.

Instruction or traditional education will not help here. Man must be given love; this will absolutely disconnect him from his own needs.

But can love awaken a desire in man to reject his own reality? It is written: “Love breaks the habitual.” Love does not obey the mind. And only when there is this kind of love from friends, then everyone lives in a world that is all good, with no concerns for themselves. Man feels how he acquires the quality of bestowal, and then according to the law of equivalence of form, he forever unites with the upper one, the perfect Giver….

This refers to the most powerful force in nature, to working with love in two directions. It is possible to control our life from two sides and obligate man to love by displaying love for him in a certain way, even without an opposite force of pressure and suppression.

Love comes to us from the Creator the same way, but it is as if He guides us down the spiritual path with two “reins”: suffering and pleasure. They both come from love. Thus, if I wish to help someone, this can only be done by multiplying my love. This way I obligate a person towards everything that is required.

This is why it is written: “Buy yourself a friend.” It says “buy,” meaning always give him love, and you will see how he will become attached to you. You “acquire” him, you become soldered together, and you beget the same response in him. At the end each of us becomes included in the other.

And when all the friends become included in the others, every one of them receives a complete vessel of Infinity, a complete soul. This way we do not only attain our individual root, but also the entire Malchut of the world of Infinity with all the Lights of NRNHY, the most powerful force in the entire reality.

Love Of Friends Is Our Common Treasure

Discover Love In Love

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabash, Dargot HaSulam (Rungs of the Ladder), “Man as a Whole”: First, one must know that love is bought by actions. By giving his friends gifts, each gift that he gives to his friend is like an arrow and a bullet, making a hole in his friend’s heart. And although his friend’s heart is like a rock, still, each bullet makes a hole. And the many holes join into a hollow into which the love of the giver of presents enters.

And the warmth of the love draws to him his friend’s sparks of love, and then the two loves weave into a garment of love that covers both of them. This means that one love surrounds and envelops the two, and they naturally become one person because the clothing that covers them both is a single garment. Hence, both are annulled.

I used to wonder why Rabash wrote his first articles about the group and love of friends as if it had no end. We waited to see when he would reveal something else to us, but he didn’t. For almost six months he wrote only about that.

The fact of the matter is that there is no other place in which we can realize ourselves and discover the spiritual world, the second reality. If we change our world, we will reveal the upper one within it. It is said: “There is nothing new under the sun.” The world is the same world, and we only change the relationships between us and then discover the upper reality.

Rabash, Shlavey HaSulam (Steps of the Ladder), “According to What Is Explained about Love Thy Friend as Thyself”: If every one is nullified before his friend and mingles with him, they become one mass, where all the little parts that want the love of others unite in a collective force that consists of many parts. And when he has great strength, he can execute the love of others. And then he can achieve the love of God.

Thus we build the vessel that enables us to discover the Creator. After all, according to the law of equivalence of form, we can discover Him only to the extent that our love for Him awakens within us. It’s in that love that we discover the love that comes from Him—the connection, the attitude of the Good that does Good. Love is when we want to fill the other, to do him good.

So I discover the Creator only if I want to do Him good. Then I have the Masach (screen) and the Reflected Light. This is why eventually we all make up a single whole and bring together many small parts into one collective force. When a person absorbs this great force from the friends, when he acquires the collective strength of the friends, he can actually “realize the love of others.”

If a person acquires the force of love of others from the friends, “he can achieve the love of God,” that is, he can execute this force with regards to the Creator and in response discover Him. After all, the Creator is revealed as the force of love.

Our Collective Bonfire

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, Fruit of the Wise, Letter 13: You should know that there are many sparks of sanctity in each person in the group. When you collect all the sparks of sanctity into one place, as brothers, with love and friendship, you will certainly have a very high level of sanctity from the Light of Life.

We lack only one thing: to bring our sparks closer together. There are no disturbances, no limitations—we should just glue ourselves into a single whole so as to flare up together.

Degel Machaneh Ephraim: It is good for Israel (those who yearn for the Creator) to be always united as one group. When they unite below, they cause their root to unite Above too.

Then this root influences us and completes what we have started, as it says: “He who makes peace in the heights, will make peace upon us.” We raise a request for correction (MAN), awaken our desires from below, and then we receive the forces of connection from Above that complete the action.

So all that is required of us is “half a Shekel,” half of the action: to want unity. The connection will be realized from Above, when our demand is correct.

Rabash, “The Need for Love of Friends”: There is a special power in the adhesion of friends. Since views and thoughts pass from one to the other through the adhesion between them, each is mingled with the power of the other, and by that each person in the group has the power of the entire group.

Every individual is different from others, but the connection gives him the power of all the friends. Imagine what it’s like when everyone feels the power of all others. This is actually the power of Infinity. After all, we connect into a huge group of friends from all over the world. We don’t need anything but that.

No one has the power to enter even the first, smallest spiritual level by himself. Only when we connect in quantity and quality do we acquire the Lights of Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Haya, and Yechida and go through the worlds of Assiya, Yetzira, Beria, Atzilut, and Adam Kadmon on our way to the world of Infinity.

All the 125 degrees of the spiritual ascent are attained by the growing connection. In it, each time I find a special vessel that is capable of greater bestowal and accordingly, I discover a greater Light.

About the Value of Love for Friends

As We Ascend, The Fear Will Defuse

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is fear?

Answer: Fear is always the fear of losing something. After all, I am merely the desire to enjoy. What is this desire afraid of? It is that something it possesses will disappear from it or that it will not be able to achieve something to which it really aspires. Briefly speaking, it is a fear of losing.

Confidence counterbalances the ego, the desire to enjoy. This is confidence that I will not feel any lack, that I always exist within my friends, that I will always be satisfied with them in every regard, and that we will undoubtedly reach the upper Light that will fill us. Nothing will bother me once I rise above the ego.

We have to reach the quality of bestowal. The quality of bestowal is the sensation of absolute confidence. I do not feel any lack, and I no longer have any concerns, worries, or fears. This is the state of Hafetz Hesed (one who does not desire anything for himself), as in the parable about the righteous man who lives in the woods without even a shirt. He needs nothing.

In this case, I have no problems. I separate from my desire to enjoy. By doing this, I acquire confidence in the state of Hafetz Hesed. Why is confidence called the Light’s clothing? It is because the Light of Hassadim (Mercy) is the clothing for the Light of Hochma (Wisdom). This is exactly what I need. Another word for the Light of Hassadim is confidence. Separation from the ego, the degree of separation, is referred to as confidence.

The more I advance, the more my ego grows according to the principle of “he who is greater than his friend, his desire is greater than his.” Every time, I am given a greater ego, even greater concerns and worries. As I rise above this, I acquire a greater quality of Hesed. This means that I acquire greater confidence. I do not depend on my desire to enjoy. I am not concerned about losing or not attaining something.

When we attain spirituality, the degree of Hafetz Hesed, we stop worrying to such an extent that one even stops concerning himself with whether he will attain the upper Light. This is an absolutely opposite state: I wanted to attain the spiritual world so badly, to acquire the quality of bestowal; I thought that it would give me unlimited possibilities. Suddenly, I discover that I do not want anything. I am fine as is. Then, I begin to work with the ego in a different way.

We will speak about these advanced stages, but our first stop is to attain a state where I rise above everything that I now have, when I dissolve in the group. Then, I really do not feel any lack, and I can begin to reveal the upper Light.

What is the upper Light? It is a degree of one’s bestowal to the others, a concern for how much he fulfills others through himself, instead of being concerned with how much he receives and how fulfilled he is. It turns out that we begin to add another dimension over the level we have achieved by rising above our ego. How much will pass through me toward the others? How much stronger will we connect into our common Kli (vessel)? Everyone fulfills everyone else.

Try to think of it this way: No one is capable of this on his own, but it is possible through helping each other, as it is written: “They helped every one his friend.” This is the only way the spiritual vessel, the Kli, becomes revealed. It is in the interconnection, care, and help. This cannot happen in any person individually; he will not be able to feel the Light.

Individually, it is possible to separate from one’s ego and not desire anything. But when I rise to a state where I do not desire anything, what is the problem? What am I missing? I lack the connection with others for all the goodness, the upper Light, to stream through me to them. Then, the Light becomes revealed, passes through me, and I feel my bestowal to others. This becomes our common spiritual vessel because there is nothing within me, alone. It is only formed in the unity between us.

We already know that we need to work with these states of mutual sensations. We need to try a little bit more, just a little bit, and then it will happen. We must hold on to this state.

Right now, we are beginning: Everyone is trying to rise above himself and connect with others in heart and mind. We must invent a certain higher dimension where we all exist. We achieved this state in the Arava desert. We had this sensation. Now, we must achieve it again.

Let us try to do this: Everyone, rise and connect to the common desire, the common sensation, the common thought, hovering over us. Do not have the sensation of the body, rather let this “animal” live near us, like a dog near its master.

We have to be connected together in one common desire, confidence, where we exist above our ego. The Light of Hassadim that will fill us then is the Kli for clothing the Light of Hochma.

Fear That Won’t Let You Stop

The Hands That Hold You Up Over The Abyss

Dr. Michael LaitmanA spark of bestowal is attached to my huge ego, a tiny spark above this entire mountain. This spark is only there on condition that I raise it above the ego, that is, want my head to be in the clouds. So, how do I tear away from the egoism and be in this spark instead of being inside the huge ego, the traits, desires, habits, and upbringing that make up the whole of me?

Of course, this is impossible; everyone sees this. A person finds that he is completely incapable, yet he understands that he must achieve the purpose of life. He does not wish to die an animal! He wants to reveal the spiritual world, to attain the meaning of life, and to feel the entire universe. He does not agree to waste his entire life and die as an animal, with no reward, goal, knowledge, meaning, understanding, or love.

So, how can I break out of this cycle? I want all of this egoistically, but even so, I am unable to maintain these thoughts. Everyday life is burying me under its weight, and even egoistically it will not allow me to think about the spiritual reward, to look even slightly above this world.

It is written that “a prisoner cannot release himself from prison.” In other words, I am unable to pull myself up by the hair from the swamp that I am in. However, I must exert as much effort as possible and try to do this many times in order to understand that I must unite with the environment.

This is possible only on condition that I see that nothing can help me. I will continue to live this dog’s life until I die, devoid of any satisfaction, love or meaning, and without having achieved even one of my egoistic goals. Only if I try all possible means will I achieve such pain.

No special intelligence or ability is required, only stubbornness. As it is said: “Do whatever you want, but don’t leave.” You will reach complete disappointment in your strength and realize that only the group can help you. That’s your only hope. No one else can save you. Your refined feelings, mind, experience, education, money, and strength are nothing! You just need the group.

I see that I have done everything I could with my strength, money, mind, desires, traits, and habits. I have tried thousands of different things, and nothing has helped. I have completely lost hope in them. The only thing that remains is for me to change myself. Instead of everything I have, let the group come and fill me. Let it give me its desires, thoughts, intelligence, feelings, mind, and heart—everything! Let the group even transplant my organs; if I stay with what I have, I will end my life as an animal.

If I reach this kind of despair, this is the start of unification with the group. This great achievement comes only after completely despairing in my own strength. I can see that nothing helps. Thus, I am willing to rise above myself to the place where my friends are situated, to the heart and the mind of the group.

Now, everyone understands that nothing else can help him, and he must depend on the others. Mutual guarantee is our salvation. If the friends leave me, I am finished. It is as if they are holding me up over an abyss. If they stop holding me up, I will fall into it. I depend on them 100%. My spiritual life and death are in the group’s hands.

In this situation, a person certainly requires mutual guarantee and is willing to go for it. He is willing to pay for it with all the strength that he has. He is willing to give to the group, support it, and sacrifice everything just so that the group would hold him up.

It turns out that the individual spiritual life of every person depends on the group, and the group includes everyone. That is what we call mutual help. Everyone must give to the group, and this group must support everyone. This is the mutual guarantee.

Mutual guarantee does not exist among individuals. The group is a higher concept, not our interaction at our level.
