Through Integral Upbringing To Mutual Guarantee

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe further we develop, the clearer it becomes that with each year we sink into an ever-deepening crisis. And the problem isn’t just the economy; there are other crises as well that we’ve failed to resolve over many years. Some areas have been mired in crisis for decades now: drugs, depression, ecology, upbringing, and family.

The common explanation to all these problems is the lack of correct connection between us, which manifests on all levels: international, national, and family. This is why right now it is mandatory to have knowledge of the system of our interconnection which obliges us to establish good relationships between ourselves and not just sign some agreements on a piece of paper about peace, trade, or production.

This resembles a marriage contract that only exists on paper: People live together in one house, but there is no emotional, inner contact between them; they simply exist in a shared space. In this case, they very quickly reach a point when they can no longer tolerate this situation and are forced to separate.

In order to avoid bringing humanity to a world war and explosion of egoism, it’s necessary for every person to see the connection between us and to understand that today this connection must flow from heart to heart.

By observing nature, we see how wisely everything is arranged in it: All of its parts, from enormous faraway stars to the tiniest of particles, everything forms a single system. With the development of science, we discover the existence of this integral connection and reciprocity more and more. And if it ever happens that we violate a certain area, this provokes thousands of consequences in our life.

This happens in human society even more obviously. This is why our success depends only on that correct connection between us, called mutual guarantee: Each individual feels that they are dependent on everyone, and all depend on each individual.

In accordance with this, new social and international laws need to be established, new norms of relationships between people, within a family, in a workplace, in public places, and even when a person is alone: Everyone needs to take care of our big family. Ultimately, we are all living in one place and are connected even more than members of a family, who live in the same house.

This dependence gives a person more than the sense of security, prosperity, and well-being. After all, he or she is among people who wish them well. If the world becomes a single family, I have no fear, no shame, and generally am not worried or afraid of anything. The whole world is mine, I breathe with ease, and in any place, be it on a street, in a store, or while traveling, I feel like I am at home.

And here we need to understand the importance of upbringing. To make a person see, agree with, and realize such attitude towards other people is very big and important work. And now humanity is entering the epoch where it will be required to perform correction and ascend to the level of Human, that is, to resemble the image of Human that we form all together.

I hope that the development of integral upbringing will allow people to see evidence in nature, science, and life, which will convince them to join this process and start changing under the influence of knowledge and practical exercises. Then we’ll be able to reach the bright and kind world, at the threshold of which we are already standing now.

The wonderful thing about it is that a person who is connected to other people begins to feel life through them. Indeed, if I love my child, it’s as if I am with him anywhere he is, I enjoy everything that brings him pleasure, and I feel everything he does.

It turns out that as soon as I begin to connect this way to the world, I receive an impression from it, and knowledge and sensation of all the people in the world appear in me. I broaden my life so much that I no longer live inside of myself but in them! And here I touch a certain eternal point within me, the ability to feel life outside my body to the measure of my inclusion into everyone within the framework of the system of mutual guarantee. We’ll hope that we will manage to achieve this!

Mutual Guarantee: “Love Covers All Sins”

Dr. Michael LaitmanHow can we correct ourselves in order to have a good, peaceful, and safe life? Otherwise, we’ll remain unemployed, with a crisis in family relationships and upbringing, and with problems in everyday life. We arrived at the point where the absence of mutual understanding and concern became the determining factor of our destiny. All of humanity is like one family, but this family is dysfunctional.

That’s why we are talking about the reconciliation that needs to happen with the help of a third force. When problems arise between spouses, they seek the help of a professional psychologist (it’s fashionable now to have a personal psychologist), who then gradually brings them closer to each other. He or she talks to each of them separately, talks to both of them together, asks questions, explains the situation, and obliges them interact and open themselves up to each other. He helps them to first understand themselves and then to understand their partner.

And then it becomes clear to each of them that even if they are opposite to the other, it’s worthwhile to make mutual concessions. And so one doesn’t lay out every complaint, and the other forgives and concedes in the things that he or she doesn’t like, as it is said that “Love covers all sins.”

We understand mutual “sins” since we are all egoists by nature and don’t take anyone else into consideration. But if it’s clear to us that there is no other choice, whether in a family life, in industry, or in ecology, then out of helplessness we’ll accept the method that will help us connect to each other. This method is purely psychological: talking to each other in order to better know and understand a person’s character or the peculiarities of an entire nation—to talk and not to be ashamed, to speak openly, like intelligent grown up people.

Yes, we are different, but we need to unite above the differences, without suppressing anyone or reproaching for unpleasant tendencies and properties. Everyone has them, but we rise above them and say: “Love covers all sins.” Sins exist, but gradually, out of love, we stop paying attention to them!

It’s the way a mother considers her child to be the most wonderful, the most beautiful. She is incapable of seeing anything bad or unworthy in him because love blinds her and she sees only the best in him. And even though there is bad in him too, she doesn’t notice it. But conversely, in a neighbor’s child she sees the negative and not the positive part because she has no love for him. But as soon as she feels love for him, she won’t be able to see anything bad even in him, but only good.

We see this in life. If you tell a mother about flaws in her child’s character or behavior, she won’t agree with that. She will either completely justify him or deny everything altogether because she truly doesn’t see anything bad in him. This is what we call, “love covers all sins.”

Likewise, one gradually comes towards the mutual guarantee that we need to reach. There is no choice, and we are beginning to examine and study each other from afar. But from the beginning, this study needs to be aimed at building the connection of love above the differences.

That is, we make concessions in advance, and then we get an opportunity to also unite on a level of feeling. And when we come closer, the world becomes peaceful and secure. We aren’t afraid to let our children play outside by themselves since any person will look after them no worse than us, and we’ll care this way for others. If we dream and imagine a good society, then of course it has to be a society in which the law of mutual guarantee is observed.

Learning To Make Concessions

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How do we transition a person from the state of cerebral perception of this idea onto a level of feelings through which he would be willing to concede?

Answer: It’s only possible on the condition that a person sees and therefore feels, relying on a large number of examples, just to what extent he or she is connected with others and depends on them, how he doesn’t have any choice, and how good it is to be in a correct connection with others. In other words, a person needs to see what he gains and what he loses. This is the phase of persuasion.

Afterwards, we move onto practical exercises with groups of people. These need to include questions and answers, games, songs, and films: We need to guide a person through the emotional perceptions for and against mutual guarantee and unification, to show them, in a real way, what can result from implementing or failing to implement these principles. This is the second phase.

In the third phase we need to use what we refer to as “habit becomes second nature.” We already spoke about this in our previous talks. If a person gets used to taking others into consideration and being connected by mutual guarantee in a small group, then gradually, by studying this and realizing that it’s beneficial to him or her, the person transfers this to an ever-wider circle of people until he attains the state where he perceives the entire world as one common circle.

We need to engage the scientists who speak about this in scientific terms in cooperation with us. They explain from the perspective of nature about what’s happening now and what will happen in any given scenario, just like a doctor who says: “You have a certain illness and only this medicine will help you. But this medicine is attainable.” It is difficult indeed, but a person is prepared to give everything for their life.

We need to utilize the force of the environment, which can convince a person of anything. I can start calling black, white. If there would be 20 people standing next to me and over 20 hours they’d be convincing me that this is white, I will start thinking that it is in fact white. My brain will alter the program and as a consequence of external persuasion, I begin to see that this is white! There are practical confirmations of this.

The influence of the environment on a person changes his or her properties, changes anything that we’ve gotten used to. We didn’t know what we were seeing and what was happening around us, this is something we were taught! And now we only need to understand that a person can be taught anything. It’s difficult to erase one’s stereotypes, but we don’t do that, we only correct within him or her, their egoistic distortion so that by using bestowal towards others, he would receive enjoyment himself.

Ultimately, he will receive a sure egoistic gain, and how could it even be otherwise?! He is being taken care of, being promised all that is best; he just needs to make concessions for that, but so what? You need to pay for everything in life. Actually, this isn’t even that great of a concession, since as soon as a person begins to relate to another with goodness and love, he begins to enjoy the fact that he is giving.

A person shouldn’t constantly be feeling pressure and stress: “I have no way out, I will treat you well even though it requires great emotional force and internal exertions…” Not at all!  We need to create such mass media, such external influences on a person, that he would change, and suddenly it would be easy for him! He will begin to enjoy the fact that he is treating you well. He will discover that he is in a wonderful world! Everyone treats him well, and he is good to all!

We need to transfer from the rails of coercion onto the tracks of voluntary participation, to learn to concede, at first forcibly, and then out of our own will and desire.

Outcome: One Upbringing For The Whole World

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the outcome of today’s lesson?

Answer: We are entering a new epoch. We stand before the necessity to change our mutual relationships, at the transition from egoistic competition to mutual guarantee, and after, to universal love. At first this occurs forcibly, under the influence of our current state and the pressure of nature, but then we will willingly shift towards mutual concessions and mutual concern.

In accordance with this, we need to build our system of explanations, education, and upbringing in such a way that over a long time it would be exerting an influence on an individual, on groups, on society, people, a nation, and on all countries together, until gradually, we all receive one upbringing and learn to live happily all together in our one home.

Either Integration Or Defeat

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Marc-Olivier Padis, editor-in-chief of Esprit): “The difficulties in Europe lie in the fact that now it must unite even more, but it is almost impossible because of the distrust of the population. Today, either the integration will be deeper, or we are threatened with total defeat.”

My Comment: Everything is correct, except that there are no means of integration in our world because to do this we need to replace egoism with bestowal, hatred with love, and this is possible only through the method of integral education.

A Sweet Pill Or A Bitter One? It’s Your Choice

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Can you describe the ideal picture to the ordinary person of how good he will feel if he begins to study the course on integral education?

Answer: First, our main course includes the explanation about human evolution: where we are headed, why there is a need now to free man of any unnecessary work, and why can’t we continue our egoistic development in which we all fail. We have developed on an upward curve, and in the 20th century there has been a sharp jump: We suddenly felt over-saturation, and now we don’t want anything anymore and have no idea what to do.

Now we are facing two options: a sharp fall and collapse or the gradual decrease of our consumption and getting rid of luxuries and surpluses until we reach the level of reasonable consumerism, but not lower than the level of bare necessities. When you explain all these problems, including problems with the environment, natural resources, the endlessness of the ego, a person begins to understand everything; he sees that there is no other choice. Today, when he reads or hears something about the problems in Europe or America, he feels that there is no way out.

Today all the modern world—America, Europe, China—these three big countries and continents, are in such a crisis that there is no way out. Nowhere in the world is there anyone who can be proud of being in the opposite phase of development. This means, that we see that there is no other way. We have to show a person the need for a different way of development. Coming out of the crisis is only through more integrality, in resembling nature.

Question: But still, when you speak about integrality, you should sweeten this explanation, give a person a “candy”….

Answer: Everything most pleasant, healthy, whole, good, and secure stems from our balance with nature. Today nature is offering us only one picture, a picture of a full, mutual, integral connection among us and with it. A failure to comply with the conditions nature presents will bring about negative and unpleasant outcomes, including wars, destruction, plagues, and so on. Therefore, we have no other choice. All of it can be showed and explained to people.

The point is that humanity has no choice. The process of dissemination of the wisdom of Kabbalah, the method of stabilizing a person’s integrality, is a long one. We have to carry it out patiently on all the continents, and then gradually humanity will see this. This will happen together with the necessary blows; otherwise, people will not notice what we offer.

But we don’t have to wait for the blows. We have to present and bring the remedy closer to people. If they continue to ignore it, then a small blow will come to which they will pay attention. Then harder blows will not be necessary.

The System Depends On Each One

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Item 121: Therefore, he says that if an individual performs one commandment, meaning after the repentance from fear, then one is short of only one commandment, and “He is happy for he has sentenced himself and the whole world to a scale of merit.” Thus, not only is he rewarded, through his repentance from love, with sentencing himself to a scale of merit, as the verse says, but he is even awarded sentencing the whole world to a scale of merit. …

Even after one has sentenced the whole world to a scale of merit, one should still not believe in himself until his dying day. Should he fail with a single transgression, he will immediately lose all his wonderful attainments, as it is written, “One sinner destroyeth much good.”

Observe this systematically. To the extent that a person takes it upon himself to be part of bestowal in longing to be similar to the Creator, he rises through the steps of the spiritual ladder and, thus, becomes an active, effective and determining part of the system.

According to the measure of his desire to be equivalent to the Creator, according to his Kelim (vessels), he discovers that he has become the most important part of the system, that he has become a representative of the Creator, as it is written, “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” in the aspect of Israel. Everyone depends on him and are under him.

Each one feels this attainment, and there is no contradiction because we are speaking about a system in which each soul has a Keter (crown), Malchut (kingdom), and Sefirot of its own that are located between bestowal and reception. Thus, when a person acquires the importance of the system in that he bestows to the entire environment in order to delight the Creator, then, time after time, he “sentences himself to a scale of merit.”

He does this in concealment and in stages through acts in solitude of bestowal. Then, he begins to feel the integral system and operates within it in completeness, in a comprehensive and general manner. This is how it goes.

With every opportunity, he sentences not only himself to a scale of merit, but the entire world. Accordingly, in the case of a downfall, he loses all of his “entries” in the system, all active bestowal of the system and “loses in favor of the many.”

Baal HaSulam describes this with the example of the King’s palace. It stands on the mountain that needs to be climbed, but, if we fall with a new egoistic desire, an uncorrected one that only now has become revealed, then we slide down the mountain and lose everything we attained.

Previously, this desire was “in order,” but now the evil that was hiding within is revealed that is much bigger than we previously knew and much more than the good we attained by working on ourselves. This big, evil desire throws us down in order to prepare the material for the ascension to the next, new level.

Information About The Most Sacred

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: A normal person living in today’s world is only concerned with corporeal matters. What will make him join the integral upbringing courses if he finds it difficult to study? After all, he has to acquire a lot of different knowledge. What can we do to make a person interested?

Answer: I don’t think that it should be difficult because we are teaching a person about himself, his life, and the society he lives in. We present him with a practical teaching about what he sees and where he exists. We don’t teach him anything theoretical.

A problem in education arises when you teach a person theoretically about laws and actions that he doesn’t see or have anything to do with. Or he might even see it when you show him a certain device and explain how it works, but he doesn’t understand.

In our case, you show everything to a person simply and clearly, like to a child: This is mother, this is father, a child, grandma, supermarket, work, and so on. You show him the interaction of the entire system, how corrupt it is, and how nature is demanding integrality and globalization from us. You teach him about the body: How the body operates, where the problems lie, when the body goes out of balance (the cause of all illnesses), and how we bring it back into balance with the help of certain chemicals because ultimately, we are simply “bags of electrons.”

You explain to a person where he exists and what he is. Any person can relate to this, and that’s why I don’t think that anyone will have any difficulty with integral upbringing courses. Even our children are able to perceive this knowledge as something natural and comprehend it quickly.

Here we’re talking about a person’s soul. This is the closest and most sacred thing to him. If we show the picture of the person’s own nature correctly, he senses and understands it.

He understands that something important is being described, that this is about him. Moreover, he is being explained how to get rid of all negative sensations and problems and to reach something that can’t be obtained with money or effort, but only through connecting to integral upbringing—not education but upbringing.

Upbringing means going over the study material in an open discourse with mutual questions and answers. This takes place in a relaxed environment, in a form of an open discussion.

I doubt that there’s anyone in the world who isn’t able to learn something about himself through this kind of interaction. Also, we’re preparing a lot of different information for these courses, such as music, poetry, books, novels, movies, and video clips, which carry short verbal and written explanations.

I haven’t seen any examples where a person wasn’t able to perceive this. On the contrary, in contrast to other teachings and sciences, this information will be perceived by people as something that relates to them personally.

The Method Of Recovery

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe develop special education and upbringing programs because we need to bring them to all people who exit the labor market and become unemployed. We must gather these people, unite them, and instead of employment, supply them with education that will become their new job.

That is, a person should work two hours a day (if at all) and the rest of the time dedicate to studying. All of us should again sit behind the desk and become students. Our unemployment benefits should not be called such but rather a scholarship, and we must strive for everyone to have a sufficient standard of living.

That, in general, is the society we have to come to very soon, otherwise various protest movements will become a huge obstacle in the world. Young people, especially in countries with high rates of unemployment such as Spain, where the unemployment rate reached 50%, can no longer return to work and go back to studying. They rapidly lose interest in life, in the rest of the world and become very inert. Entire cities, such as Detroit in the US, where industries go bankrupt, simply become ghost-cities: Vandalism, poverty, and drugs flourish there. Such cities are not few in the world.

The problem is that today humanity doesn’t yet understand that it has to re-educate itself to lift itself up to the integral, global level offered to us by nature. We have to achieve a state of mutual balance with it, and then we will feel a great release of energy and opportunities. Each person and the entire humanity will indeed achieve the state of fulfillment. This is humanity’s goal today. This is what is taught by the method of integral upbringing, which is applicable to both children and adults.

A part of the method of integral studies is called “Integral Education.” It describes the integral state of a family: how families, family dynamics, and children’s upbringing should be arranged.

We raise children not even knowing how to bring them up correctly. Young people who have children don’t know what to do with them. Only many years later do they begin to realize how many mistakes they made as young parents.

Family economics and the whole process of historic development, egoism as the foundation of our society, the correctly formed egoism and correct interaction between people as the foundation of new society of integral interaction between us, all of it comprises a part of the method called “Integral Education.”

The other part of the method, “Integral Upbringing”, concerns itself with changing man himself, transforming him from a narrow-minded egoist into a human being who can integrally relate to society, people, and environment.

The fact is that a person is formed under the influence of his environment; his only free will lies in choosing which group or society to join. Accordingly, when he joins a certain society, he begins to change; that is what changes us. The only thing we can do for ourselves is to change ourselves under the influence of a certain society surrounding us.

When we create around a person a group of people who want to change integrally, they exert upon him a certain influence. Together with them he begins to transform and see what it means to live in an integral, global society that nature brings forward as a condition for our future existence.

It turns out that man in this little society, in this little group begins to reveal absolutely new forces of nature. Through the connection between us we begin to feel the concealed force of nature—the force of bestowal, the force of cooperation, some additional force. We begin to sense nature through our new integral sense organ.

Humanity As An Integral System

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe can talk at great length about our interconnection, which in recent times obliges us to make contact with each other at the emotional level. We need to start connecting with each other not only in accordance with ecological laws, manufacturing processes, the banking system, mutual upbringing, and healthcare, but personally. Correspondingly, all the nations need to engage in good relations with each other.

In the process of the evolution of nature, development went through still, vegetative, and animate levels before reaching the level of man. The human civilization developed through the same stages too, leading us to the point where we’re starting to acquire the image of one man. Precisely this state is called Adam, Human.

And here comes a question: How will we achieve this? It’s impossible to exist any other way since our further development requires a good mutual relationship, and without it, we won’t be able to correct the laws of economics, industry, and trade. The world is at a dead end, confused; it doesn’t understand what to do next. People have lost their interconnection altogether because in our time it is a heartfelt, soulful connection that is demanded of us, something that has never existed between us.

We either despised each other, exchanged goods, or collaborated out of hopelessness in manufacturing and trade. But it wasn’t required of an individual or a government to have a good relationship with their partner. However, now we are to required to exert internal, psychological efforts in relation to a stranger, and our development consists of just that.

We can feel that without such relationships, we cannot exist correctly, even in our own home. If I share an apartment with a few people, we find a way to get along provided each of us has their own space. But right now, we are so dependent on each other—each on everyone—that without correct relationships between us, our life becomes simply horrible.

Therefore it’s necessary for us to come to an agreement, and this agreement is called mutual guarantee. In other words, our relationships need to be such that each will feel that his or her life depends on others. That’s how soldiers from the same unit know that their life depends on all the others, and if each one doesn’t support and care for the rest, all of them will lose.

Such systems of mutual dependence exist in nature and technology: They are called integral or analog systems. Within them, all the parts are so interconnected that if any piece fails, the entire mechanism stops working. Evidently, as human society developed, we have grown to the point of reaching this kind of connection.
